    I'm 71 and I can do 40 full push-ups with good form in a single set despite being diagnosed with Parkinson's almost five years ago. If I can do it, anyone can do it -- all you have to do is stick with it and keep progressing. Having some muscle and strength is critical to avoiding injury as we age. It's taken me five years to get to this point but it is attainable if you put in the effort and remain consistent.
    I also do dips and pull-ups/chin-ups to improve upper body strength. I only spend 10 minutes exercising on three days of the week but it makes an enormous difference in reducing frailty and increasing robustness.

      If you can do that many push-ups - may I suggest a pull-up bar (if you aren't already using one). I reached a plateau when I got to two sets of 25 and wasn't progressing. Got me a pull-up bar - went from 1 half-pull up to 5 easy ones in about a month - progress got a major boost from that!

    Good point. I'm 71 and a couple years ago found out I couldn't get up off the floor from a sitting position. I had to bring myself back to a simple fitness program - I use the 5bx, but of course there are many. I still have to force myself to start, every time, but I also now lift weights using the basic Stronglifts program. I won't lie, it is a thing I force myself to, every damn time. If I don't, my muscles waste and old problems from a life working at construction come back. I only recently overcame a rotor cuff injury. I know I can't stop it, but maybe I can slow down the slide. I do about a dozen push-ups, always sort of favoring one shoulder. Not the best, but it gets it done...the hardest thing is to shut up my mind and just do.

Last time I tried push ups, something popped in my right shoulder blade area. No lasting harm but just, dang, osteoporosis throws all bets to the wind. (I was 61 at diagnosis, 63 now, seem to always be nursing an injury now, but I'm still trying. Doing counter pushups, dead hang and triceps dips daily. Was doing Farmer's carry, will get back to it when my lower back (slipped disc?) heals up. Aging is JUST grand. )

    My doctor wants me to incorporate progressive strength training into my exercise. I already do daily aquacise and swim sprints in my pool. I don’t have a local gym that offers this for my age group. I also don’t have space for a home gym. Basically I'd like to see what I can do at home for minimal output and maximum (or sufficient)results. Isn’t that what we all want?😅

    Truly loved this.
    So much is out there for the young and fit, (been there, lost it - life happens 🙄).
    Getting it back is HARD.
    Too many of us go too hard, get disappointed and give up.
    I really love your stuff🤗.
    A month ago ... couldn't do a single pushup - had to do your 'start easy' way.
    I still can't do a single pushup😂...(I'll get there), but i can do more of the easy versions.
    But what i REALLY notice is - i feel 'more in my body' - i feel i fit it better. I remember this feeling. I never even noticed when i lost it🤷‍♀️
    My balance is better, coordination, movement - all starting to 'flow', rather than be effort.
    Thank you for doing videos such as this - some of us lost mojo years ago....and need a safe and doable routine that won't damage us or make us feel ashamed and weak compared to what we once were.
    Again.... love your stuff. The humor helps too🤗
    All feel good stuff, keep at it. ✌️☺️

    I am 78 and have been strong until the past year. I have had several surgeries: bilateral knee replacements, right shoulder, lumbar surgery/ fusion. I want and need upper body strength (and lower; however, I feel that I have limitations with my knees as far as getting on the floor, even if I put a cushion under my knees… But I would like that to change if possible.
    Your podcast is wonderful for seniors because you take sections of the body first and make sure that I understand how to do the exercises and they’re not difficult in the beginning so I can perfect my position.

    Another great video! I don't understand the part about no gas mowers. Most people I know use them. My mom, in her eighties, uses hers for trimming the lawn. She is very active and when I offered to buy her the battery powered lawn mower, she was offended.
    Keep up the great work!

    I am 67, and have had physical setbacks in the last 5 years. I've always been athletic, but shoulder pain prohibits push ups. The pain fires during the negative (dipping) phase of the push up.... hanging from a pull up bar (hyper extension) is also impossible. I found a great exercise to build shoulder strength without pain... "Bear Crawl". The bear crawl, both forward and backward, allow dynamic strength building without a negative movement.... they also build core and hips! My hope is that I can rebuild my shoulders, and slowly work back to push ups and pull ups... if modified, so be it... MUCH better than nothing.

    Always think 'what could go wrong ' and what happens if it does !
    When using the chairs for push ups , it's a long way down - face first.. If you fail !

    • @becky9103
      @becky9103 Місяць тому +2

      I thought the same thing! Maybe use your bed instead of two chairs. Then it won't hurt if you fall.

      You could always put some pillows on the floor below your face, just in case!

    • @hlw1306
      @hlw1306 Місяць тому +1

      I think the 2 chairs is mistaken advice and harder than a real pushup from the floor. It drops the chest too low for one and is visually stressful. Depending on chairs and flooring, chairs slip out of place with movement against them.
      The wrists are weak for out of shape people with weight.
      Standing and pushing against a wall or door is a better start than a countertop for weak wrists.
      To make lifting more interesting, incorporate things you want to lift for your lifestyle once you get past 5lbs or so. Jugs of water, guitar in a case, a suitcase and then a filled one, a coiled garden hose, a sack of fertilizer or seed, a sewing machine, a pot of pasta water, etc.
      Can you lift a small suitcase into an overhead bin?
      Weights are needed for bone health with proper nutrition. He's correct about repetition sets.

    Hello, I’ve been watching a lot of your videos! I had a hip labral tear that after 2 years of pain, I had surgery for. He ended up doing more than a repair. Did a osteocondroplasty and capsule repair as well. There’s such an imbalance between the right and left sides though. I’ve gone to multiple physical therapists. Now I’m watching a lot of your videos. I think it is helping. Hopefully I can get both sides even and strong
