I’m a side and back sleeper . Ive had massive lower back and sciatica pain plus upper back pain over the years. I’ve found I have trouble with my arms and shoulders in bed so to fix this I just bought a children’s soft snuggle toy to hug while I’m in bed. 😂❤ It’s worked a treat! It’s about the size of a basketball but a slightly flatter shape. I can also tuck it under my stomach as I lay on my side, or tuck it between my knees. I don’t like having too many different pillows in bed as every time I turn over I wake up due to having to move and rearrange everything! My squishy soft toy is ideal for any position that I need a little support with. Hope this helps someone else. ❤
Nice to see that flashback of Bob and Brad! I am a side sleeper, and it's hard to change at this point. I am going to invest in a more appropriate pillow.
I'm a side sleeper, usually with my knees pulled up toward my chest. I'm on again, off again, with either low back pain or sciatica (can never figure out what the actual source is). In watching this I was reminded that I have the McKenzie pillow and need to use it! I so appreciate all the work you guys (Bob, Brad and Mike) have put into making these videos available. I watch them and they are my first go to if I have any joint or muscle pain, Thanks!
Ok what about a pillow between your knees while sleeping on your side? I’m mostly a side sleeper and I use 3 pillows, one for my head, which I position properly for neck protection, one like on the side of my stomach (hard to explain) which also gives my back support and one in between my knees. I am a “pillow nest builder” sleeper!! 🤣🤣
@@jaclyncritesJesuslovesyou I wish I could just paint a picture…..I use king size pillow for between my knees and down to my feet, a standard size real soft for my abdominal area up to chest and a king size fairly soft pillow for my head, neck and shoulder support. I fix this pillow so that I have neck support and to keep my head from going forward, ya know stuck out like a chicken clucking!!! LOL (OK I think this painted a pretty good picture of my “pillow nest” Sweet Dreams!😴💤🛌
Thank you! I've been a side sleeper due to malformed L4 & L5 vertebrae. Long ago I learned to sleep with a pillow between my legs & feet, & another under my waist. Thank you for confirming I've been doing it right all these years. I learn so much from you & glad I saw a flash back in time with Bob..
I LOVE how you’ve “updated” your programs… the humor and fun is back and inserting the old clips with Brad is a great idea. It’s a more-interesting format, “in my opinion”!😂
Oh my gosh! I've watched that older video!!! My sister had recommended Bob & Brad to me several years! Her chiropractor recommended them to her!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I sleep on my left side. I started have seizures about 10 years ago, often nocturnal. My Neurology team suggested this position. I will buy the McKensie roll for low back pain. Thank you for all your helpful tips and suggestions.
I was surprised the pillow between the knees wasn’t addressed in either video. For lumbar support while on my side I use a small flat pillow like those found on airlines. I tried a pillow made as a combo for side and back sleepers but it wasn’t quite right so I’m back to a fairly solid memory foam pillow. I’m a lifelong side sleeper.
Try sleeping with a lumbar roll under your lower back. And a thin flat pillow under each arm or forearm. The wedge pillow under the legs helps with that too.
I would really love to see a video for people with sleep apnea. I have had to adjust my entire sleep position. I use an incline pillow, then had to adjust for neck support.
I'm a side sleeper. Have been for years. it's the only position that is semi-comfortable for me since I injured my back at work. Love watching you guys when I can!!
I'm a side sleeper. I never used to have any pain at all sleeping exclusively on my side, but first came the hip pain and now the shoulder is hurting. I watched another video you had about hip pain to exercise it out which helped and intend on using the hip tip tonight. Plus, I'm going to watch the shoulder pain video right now. Thanks guys, and stay healthy.
Hey guys! So good to see Bob from the past! I have reflux and use a wide angle sponge. Sleeping on my back is no problem. Side sleeping I'm curving my spine. I really like your long round pillow that ties on what a great idea! Thanks!❤
I'm a side-sleeper. Specifically, my right side. Once I'm comfortable, I can stay there all night. I have a flat pillow, topped with an adjustable shredded foam pillow, under my head. Open space for my shoulder, another shredded foam (flatter) pillow under my ribs, and finally, a flat pillow between my legs. I fall asleep with my left (upper) leg nearly straight, and my right leg fairly bent- around 110* angle. I call my leg pillow my "knee pillow." I've been using it since 2001, when I had ACL replacement surgery. I couldn't tolerate my knees touching each other for several months post-op. It's comfortable, so I still use it. Plus, if I end up on my back, for whatever reason, my legs are supported, which keeps my back from hurting.
Here is the problem, most people change positions during the night. You may have a favorite starting position, however very few people stay in that position all night. You can avoid any position you want going to sleep however once you are sleep you will change positions.
I wish I had seen this video 60 years ago. I learned to avoid arthritis pain in my feet, lower back, neck, and shoulders, I 😮forced myself to sleep on my back with a large hard pillow under my knees, and a fancy memory foam pillow like the one you have there. If I turn in the night, pain wakes me, and I return to the back position. Love you guys. I always learn something from your show.
I love your videos, the banter between you and Mike is great, nice to see a relaxed but educational video series. I used to be a tummy sleeper until my back injuries, now I sleep on my side, with an expensive but amazing memory foam pillow and a memory foam pillow between my knees. I find it gets too hot to have any pillows in bed for support, even the knee one. But, I don't get headaches now, which I used to get all the time when sleeping on my tummy, not knowing about the causal factor. Now I'm recovering from a sciatica flare up and sleep on my side, don't move during the night at all, (somehow) and wake up feeling pain free. Thank you guys for the effort you put into your videos. We, your faithful viewers appreciate it. I'm from New Zealand.
Recently started sleeping in a recliner, can't afford an adjustable bed. If I sleep in a regular bed my shoulder is all out of alignment in the morning. Feel just fine if I sleep in a fairly upright position.
Try that position Bob demonstrated with the pillow under your chest (8:45)......incredible!!!! Takes the pressure off the shoulder,, as well as the other one Bob showed at 9:00. Really helps. Hope you find a solution....otherwise, guess you could say you're the reason they made those chairs that only men seem to like!!!
Your advice of a towel or sheet around the waist to sleep changed my sleep completely as the morning back pain is gone. You guys are absolutely awesome! Thank you!!
Side sleeper here. But my legs are never parallel. One leg is bent at the knee quite a bit. Your demo always shows keeping them parallel, but your knees don't like that. However I like the idea of a bit of a towel roll or a child's pillow above the hips.
I use several travel pillows and a wedge, along with my plump and my flat pillows. Some are for back sleep, some for side sleep. I arrange all this however my back, neck, and knees feel most supported. I prefer side sleeping, but often have to go to my back because of shoulder or hip pain. I always support my neck to stay aligned. Great video!
I am a side sleeper with 2 reverse shoulder replacements. I use a knee pillow, and a pillow under the elbow, figured out on my own the slightly oblique angle of shoulder forward. I might try the under the waist option thanks for the suggestion.
While off-topic, I had undiagnosed sleep apnea until the 1990s. I come from a long line of "raise the roof" snorers. I knew something was wrong when I began falling asleep at my desk in middle age. A wise doctor sent me for a sleep test. It actually started me on an exercise/weight loss journey. After years of fitful sleep, six weeks of CPAP (yeah, it's hard to get used to, but hang in there), I fell like Jimmy Stewart at the end of "It's a Wonderful Life." Machines have advanced, as has the science from those days.
Normally I sleep on my sides but I change positions often. When I try to sleep on my stomach I use an airline horse-shoe shaped neck pillow. With the open end down at my chin. I put my face down straight into the middle, head is not turned and am able breath through the bottom opening. If you have a long nose then use two pillows or one plump one to keep you nose from bottoming out on the mattress. Thanks guys for years of great therapeutic advice. PS. my arms usually end up laying along my sides.
I am all about pillows and getting in the right side position to try to keep my head & spine straight. I like to 'tuck' (as best as possible) the back body pillow(s) so that my back has a little support from behind, it helps! Great video!
You are so entertaining. I’m a stomach sleeper without a pillow about half the time. No neck issues. Many times I fall asleep on my side but wake up on my stomach with no memory of switching. It feels like I sleep most soundly on my stomach. I’ve tried sleeping on my back without success.
Watching this video while wearing my Bob and Brad heating pad for the back and shoulders. This thing is fabulous! Full length from neck to back with ties to hold it close to the body. Highly recommend it!
I am an 83 year old woman who has always slept mostly on my stomach and occasionally on my side…never on my back. No back pain , no headaches. Always sleep with 3 soft pillows in various positions.
I am a side sleeper using a specially designed pillow for between my knees. Just from Amazon, but it makes a difference as I’ve had both hips replaced and a back surgery.
I sleep prone, i have my head close to the edge of the bed. I sleep with my head in a more downward position. I rest my front half of my face on the pillow, instead of the ear side... Zero headaches and it helps with other issues. When I sleep on my side I can bend my shoulder quite a ways forward or backwards and avoid the whole side problem thing,
Good information. I'm a side sleeper with shoulder issues so I appreciated the information about that. I use a separate pillow next to the opposite side of my head to provide support. As an analogy it would be Like a using a piece of wood as a "chuck" to keep your car from moving down a hill. I don't like putting the "top" arm across my chest as you showed because it's uncomfortable for my shoulder while the extra pillow provides support. This sounds confusing as I read it back but I'm sure you'll get what I mean. Thanks.
I sleep on my stomach and it’s been getting more and more uncomfortable lately. Last night I tossed and turned for hours looking for the sweet spot I never found. Gonna try some of these tips.
My favorite? Pretty much all of those! 🤣 Due to “back issues” I need to move my legs frequently, thus changing positions. Pillows are important because I like them firm enough to manipulate but soft enough to push between my shoulder and head. Thanks to both of you for the good tips and for the lighthearted delivery❣️🐅
Med cline (? MedKline) wedge pillow for shoulder pain . Life changing . Second tear of a rotator cuff, cervical spine issues , lower back pain. ❤ this wedge
im a side sleeper at a 45 degree towards the front and with one knee forward of the other with a "huggy" pillow supporting my upper arm. Cant wait to try the pillow underneath
Somewhere, I saw to guys give this tip--to have a big pillow, (or two regular sized ones), put it beside your head, push an arthritic shoulder into the pillow, putting arm out or down your legs, pressure off your shoulder. Gee--I think it was two guys---??? BUT it helps my sore shoulder a lot. (say that fast 3 times---sore shoulder)!!! It helps me.
Another side issue is hip alignment. On your side, unless you're fat, your upper knee sags to meet the lower. That pulls the greater trocantor, which in turn twists the hip girdle (pelvic syructure). I can only sleep on my side and started using body pillows 25-30 years ago to place my upper knee in alignment. I sleep on a waterbed, so many of the typical side sleeping issues are reduced, but the knee one is still there.
Helpful and as a R side sleeper find my shoulder does get sore sometimes but interesting that try to move slightly left and relieves like you suggested! Great to see Bob there and thanks for the good info!
I lay on my side put my arm under the pillow hand about my ear sometimes I tuck my knees way up. Feels great. Like a little ball. I gather the covers under my other arm to soften the pressure . Then at some point I stretch a leg straight out the stretch feels good and I can kinda turn my shoulder back so my face is slightly up. I never seem to go on my back but I can then switch to the other side. Me: I am very limber and strong do Pilates and barre classes almost everyday . I am learning pickleball I am 5’8” tall 120 lbs female 60+ years old WFPB vegan No processed foods, no refined sugar or seed oils. Very little oil. Lots of fruits veggies nuts seeds tofu beans and grains. I’m a WFPB certified coach. my only issue is bone density Hope to maintain what I have and build if possible. Take D3 and B12 daily Love your videos!!!
A tip i came across in 'Body fix exercises' channel that I found really helpful for side sleepers, is to extend the top leg beyond the bottom leg. This creates less curvature on the low back and rib case and it's something I do all the time. One of my main side sleeping pains besides shoulder compression is rib cage and thoracic stiffness, and that tip really seems to help. Thank you Bob & Brad for the great content.
I sleep on a wedge pillow with a horizontal pillow at the bottom and 2 vertical pillows to rest my hips and beded legs and to keep me from sliding down and hurting my neck by morning.
I'm also a weirdo. I usually start on my back but then flip and turn from side to side to stomach throughout the night. I've been trying to force myself not to sleep on my right side because my shoulder hurts every morning but now I know what to do to help with that. Thank you.
When using relatively soft pillows for support, it is important to be careful they do not cover the face because they can interfere with breathing which can be much worse than pain.
I have done a method of your pillow-under-stomach for stomach sleepers. I have a longer pillow that I use. It goes from just under my chin to my knees. It's like I'm floating on a huge puff ball. It helps keep my spine neutral and my shoulders tucked. I do have to fiddle with getting my neck just right sometimes. Thanks for the demo Mike!
For me, I need a pretty wide pillow between my knees when side sleeping. This puts the lumbar spine in alignment instead of rotating from the weight of the knee. Recently, one knee has been so sensitive that it is also necessary to have that same foot supported with pillows. The weight of the foot actually pulls down on the ligaments in my right knee. With support, I maintain the same position through most of the night.
Y'all are awesome! Hello to my favorite Physical Therapists on UA-cam! Hi Mike!! Hi Brad!! Hi Bob!! If y'all need a new client, im available!! See y'all next video!! I'll definitely forward this video to whomever will benefit from your suggestions. Toodles!!

Surprised you didn't mention pillow between the knees for side sleeping! Also, the Pillow Cube helped eradicate my neck and shoulder pain. Regular memory foam just didn't cut it. Can't sleep on my back too long as it irritates the ribs and can cause costochondritis flare ups. Is there different advice for women to address particular issues (e.g.,hip pain, breast pain, pregnancy, etc.) Love your videos! I recommend them often.
I use a pillow in-between my knees and lower thighs. It helps to keep my legs alignment with my hips. It also helps my my spine alignment. But, yes, everyone is different when it comes to comfort. Just a thought. Thank-you for your tips.
I used to sleep on my side/prone but found thru my dentist I was severely grinding my teeth in my sleep. That and gum chewing caused jaw pain. So I switched to flat on my back and quit gum. My jaw pain and teeth grinding quickly disappeared. And I feel most comfortable w/o a pillow elevating my head. The spine is more relaxed and I also breathe much better. Sweet Dreams. ❤
Love these ideas, thank you. I have a pinched nerve in neck and always slept on stomach with leg pulled up. Trying to get used to sleeping n my side. This helps.
I'm trying to convert from a side sleeper to a back sleeper using pillow placement to achieve a "zero G" position. I'm curious how you would advise. I love your posts!
I'm a left side sleeper and on my back sleeper. i've been on my back sleeper for years but last several months i've been using the left side sleeper position. i found that side sleeping feels better overall than on my back sleeping. Plus, i've started using the memory foam pillow the last several months. it has help my sleeping more restful and I enjoy my waking up in a better mood & with no muscle aches. Great sleep!!
They have a memory foam pillow made with a hole in the middle for your face when lying in prone. It was invented as a napping pillow to use on a desk or table or while on a plane ride while you place your face in the hole, which allows you to breathe, and gives you room to put your arms under the pillow to prevent shoulder impingement. But I use that pillow because I wake up in the morning with horrible ear cramps since I have large protruding ears. The hole is large enough to place my head straight on the pillow so my ear fits comfortably into the hole. This allows me to sleep through the night, without waking up with an ear cramp from bent cartilage, and allows me to put my arm under the pillow without my arm going into a cramp. Sometimes I fall asleep while stroking my ear through the hole. I know it sounds weird, but it is soothing and helps me get to sleep more quickly.
I switch back and forth between my back and side; honestly very hard to find a pillow that suits both! Side sleeping hurts my shoulders, neck, and traps - and back sleeping seems to lead to a stinging piriformis 🤷🏻♀️
I've developed a unique solution that seems to work well for me. I'm 4'9", so this isn't going to work for everyone. I have one of the memory foam neck pillows, and I absolutely love it. It's perfect for me. I also got a king sized pillow for it's length and I sleep on my side with the pillow between my knees, and I'm sort of hugging the pillow at the same time (because it's long enough that I can do that). However, I've returned to strength training (after an embarrassing amount of time away), and am noticing an impingement in the front of my shoulder. I don't want to make the situation worse by my sleeping position, but of course it's a habit to sleep like this now. The interesting part is that I always wake up on my back. Perhaps my body doesn't like this position as much as my brain does? Any thoughts?
I sleep in a kind of recovery position. I was in hospital a couple of years ago and due to all the equipment I had I had to sleep on my back. I was so glad to get back to my bed as I just do not feel comfortable on my back
Like Mike, I sleep in all positions. I keep a small sand -filled covered bag under my pillow so I can grab it during the night if I need extra neck support or whatever
I'm a back and side sleeper I rotate throughout the night. I use 2 to 3 pillows one xfirm one med and one soft..I line them up vertically one is by my side one holds up my neck and one holds them all up .
Side sleeper with allergic rhinitis. Means I have to switch between sides often for sinus drainage. I use two flat pillows to find a properly positioned head/neck and make sure to create a valley for shoulder. I always put a pillow between my knees and make sure my top side shoulder does not drop into front of my chest. All good so far at 77 years and counting.
So, I have shoulder pain and enjoy sleeping on my side. These are some great tips. What about sleeping on my back? Years ago I hurt my lower back and they told me to try to sleep on my back which I do this with a firm pillow under my knees and when I can do this it seems to help my shoulders as well as my back.

I am all about pillows and getting in the right side position to try to keep my head & spine straight. I like to 'tuck' (as best as possible) the back body pillow(s) so that my back has a little support from behind, it helps! Great video!
Thanks for sharing and watching!!
I can only sleep on my right side but have neck tension & side hip pain. I will be trying your suggestions.
Hi Bob, Brad, and Mike. Thank you for all the sleep position remedies. Question: what about sleeping in a fully reclined recliner chair? ❤️
Thanks, as a side sleeper I will try your advice .
Side sleeper here and the untuck method works for me to prevent pinched nerves
Side sleeper here. I use a memory foam pillow but turned upside down (so the bigger hump is under my neck). Also put a pillow between my knees.
Awesome video. Lots of great information. Thank you.
When I sleep on my side I can bend my shoulder quite a ways forward or backwards and avoid the whole side problem thing,
Had double hip replacement an shoulder pain your advice for both shoulder an hip Ada side sleeper I will do.
Thanks.
Thank you for watching and sharing 😊
I sleep on my stomach and it’s been getting more and more uncomfortable lately. Last night I tossed and turned for hours looking for the sweet spot I never found. Gonna try some of these tips.
Hope it helps!
As shown; I put a pillow under my chest to relieve pressure on my shoulder. A circle of cloth on pillow to keep pressure off my ear.
Did it help?
@@BobandBrad yes
im a side sleeper at a 45 degree towards the front and with one knee forward of the other with a "huggy" pillow supporting my upper arm.
Love your videos!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Good point 😀
I have done a method of your pillow-under-stomach for stomach sleepers. I have a longer pillow that I use. It goes from just under my chin to my knees. It's like I'm floating on a huge puff ball. It helps keep my spine neutral and my shoulders tucked. I do have to fiddle with getting my neck just right sometimes. Thanks for the demo Mike!
You guys are great! !! Bob's Eerie Canal Theory has long been tried and true! THANK YOU
For me, I need a pretty wide pillow between my knees when side sleeping.
Thank you for sharing!
Bob looks great is this new or a old one
Learned to sleep on my left side after having four children. But I put a pillow between my knees to help hip pain.
Thanks for the video. How about a pillow beteeen the knees? Seems to help the hips.
Here is a video on sleeping with a pillow between your knees and the benefits of it ua-cam.com/video/hEmTBkJNHfg/v-deo.htmlsi=N-80LcM_fH0qU7gh
Toodles!!
Will try the waist roll thx. l2/3/4 degen disc disease
Thank you for recommending them and thank you for sharing! Much appreciated!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
@BobandBrad And thank you as well. I hope it may help someone else. I do favor physical therapy over meds. So far, so good.
Im a side sleeper thank you
Love these ideas, thank you. I have a pinched nerve in neck and always slept on stomach with leg pulled up. Trying to get used to sleeping n my side. This helps.
You're so welcome! I'm happy we could help!
Thank you for sharing!
The pillow under the stomach for belly sleepers worked for me starting about 3 months ago when stenosis started causing pain.
I’m a left side sleeper, sometimes back sleeper. Stopped sleeping on my side as much when my hip pain got worse.
I switch back and forth between my back and side; honestly very hard to find a pillow that suits both! Side sleeping hurts my shoulders, neck, and traps - and back sleeping seems to lead to a stinging piriformis 🤷🏻♀️
We hear you!
Any suggestions for ear pain? Any special pillows for that? Thanks.
Thank you for the tips.
Appreciate your help.
I sleep in so many positions. My T band is painful as well as my Sciatic. I will try these tips.
shoulder pain! and sometimes snoring, I am mostly a right side sleeper and occasionally prone.
