75 year old here. Six months ago I tripped on uneven pavement and landed hard directly on my right shoulder. Massive bruising, shoulder joint separation, and then X-ray revealed a hairline fracture on the ball portion of the ball-and-socket joint. Doctor came to the house - I’m in Mexico and it’s a thing here - and painfully but skillfully maneuvered the shoulder joint back in place. Almost no mobility for 6 weeks (and mercifully very little pain), then gradual improvement. When I started physio, this arm-raising exercise with a resistance band was one of the first that I was instructed to do. Six months later, I am swimming daily - crawl and breaststroke - for an hour, and continue to do exercise, many from this channel. Now I will add the weights. Daily exercises were/are the key to recovery from this injury. Someone said to me: ‘Motion is lotion for your joints’. Sounds about right. Thank you, Will.
I'm sorry to hear about your fall! I'm so pleased you had an excellent physio and that you've made such a remarkable recovery. Keep up the fantastic work you're doing to keep yourself moving!
I had a similar experience but was unlucky- landed on my back and broke L3 lumbar spine badly. Was almost a wheelchair. What caused the fall was I was knocked out by falling object. Was just getting back to normal( 2 years- kyphoplasty) when drunk driver hit me and broke arm/ knee.
he's not lying. I have been doing a variation of this exercise for 2 years and my shoulder impingement is healed, scapular strength is awesome, I'm doing pull-ups again. finally. I would recommend a longer bungy and continuing the movement over the head and behind the back. It may take a while, but It can be done and it works....
Woke up with a pain in left shoulder a week ago...no idea what to do, then I discover you AND you're in Farnham where I was born and raised in the 1960's.... If I ever get back there I'll stand you a beer in the Cobbett...Cheers Will
I'm sorry to hear about your shoulder pain, I hope it is starting to ease for you. And what a coincidence! I'm always up for being introduced to the best places if you ever have any recommendations 😃
Can’t wait for my husband to try this. His shoulder has hurt for 40 years! I especially like exercises with bands because we live on a sailboat and don’t have a great deal of room for equipment.
I hope it provides some welcome relief for him! I also have a selection of other videos on my channel with exercises using bands which you may find helpful as part of your boat life 😃
In addition to Will's excellent exercises, you could also check out Dr John Kirsch's hanging method (from book Shoulder pain?) also search YT, did wonders for my shoulders after two year of getting nowhere with physio.
What I like about your channel is that the exercises shown by you are science proven. There is no dearth of quack doctors or physiotherapists videos on the internet. Will I am really blessed to found your channel. This is a fantastic exercise. Thanks for that. Your book is helping me a lot too. Have a great weekend Will.
I try to ground all my practice in the latest research and science-backed principles to ensure I am recommending the most effective techniques and tips. I'm so pleased you've found my videos and my book helpful, that's always wonderful to hear. I'm wishing you all the best 😃
Love this! One idea for anyone wanting to increase the effect but, like me, doesn’t own dumbbells (but does own resistance bands) … tie the loop at one end of a longer band and stand on the longer “tail” Depending how short the section you leave is, this can add a nice boost.
Will .. have been following your channel for a while now .. I am 58 and I must I am doing quite a few of your simple movements they have been so so effective ..many many 🙏 Thanks ❤
every exesise I've put into action has helped me enormously,,,I was desperate to try anything by the time I discovered wills posts ,,so glad I did ,, thank you will ,,,
Ah ,yes ... I like this one. I can feel my shoulders learning to behave ...after 7 months of impingement/rotator cuff/bicep tendonitis in my left shoulder. Hope to be swimming pain free again soon. 61 year old male here.
Good to know! This is exactly what I’ve been suffering from for the past year. I’ve had 2 cortisone shots with no effect with the first and about 2.5 months pain free with the second. I can’t wait to try this. I’d love to get back to my normal workouts but it’d be nice to just sleep thru the night!
I have pretty strong shoulders but do some repetitive motion at work so I needed some prevention exercise. Just did this with a medium-strength knee band and I really like how this feels. I really love super simple easy to do between chores exercises like this because it just takes less than a minute to get some work in and I actually want to do these!
I've been arguing with my friends that I'm not 57, I'm actually triple 19, but they just laugh at me. All kidding aside, your channel is great - both good advice, AND it shows up in my feed every day or two, reminding me to dig my bands out of the closet and do SOMETHING. Thanks mate :-)
Thank you! I’ve been doing this exercise with a normal strap for years to support my swimming and active deadhangs but will now substitute the resistance band. I do it laying on floor over rolled yoga mat along spine (knees bent, feet flat on floor) to support head and back. 😊
This exercise healed my shoulder impingement within a couple of months that was killing me for over a year. I also incorporated some hanging from a pull up bar when my shoulder was feeling better.
I'm 65 in Calgary Canada and after being very active and fit my whole life, I suddenly started having terrible pain in my left shoulder. For 35 years I've worked as a window washer but have mostly used my right hand. First my shoulder started snapping and clicking, I went for massage but it got worse. This pain started about a month AFTER I took a break from going to the gym. I'd usually spent about 10 hrs a week doing a combination of weights and swimming. I'm also vegan and I don't drink or smoke. Should I wait for the pain to subside before I start these exercises? Thanks Will for your very helpful and no-nonsense videos. Lorne Holman
Hello - I'm not a physical therapist, but I have used this method for the past couple of weeks. You should absolutely check with Will or your MD, but if my experience could be useful, I left a comment above, describing how well this method has worked for me. So far as the pain is concerned - I know what you mean, it seems counter-intuitive to force movement when there's a good bit of pain. But, I did only one complete round, very, very carefully, with the lightest resistance band the first time and even that helped alleviate the pain. My shoulder was sore, but the throbbing stopped. And, after only two weeks, every other day routine, I've moved up to the 3rd resistance band (out of 4). The soreness remains, but is lessened and the aching pain is so much better! Again, do check with someone qualified, but I wanted to offer some encouragement. All the best to you!
Thanks so much! I do Pilates regularly and sometimes struggle with shoulder pain. Will start doing this exercise tomorrow!! 65 years old and will exercise forever.
I’ve been suffering with shoulder impingement for months and have tried many exercises but to no avail until trying HT Physio’s 1 exercise. After 3 days my shoulder is feeling better than it has for months. I will be making this a daily routine. Thanks!
So happy to come across this site. Can hardly wait to get started. I have lost so much muscle these past few years it is interfering with my walking/standing.
I'm sorry to hear about your recent muscle loss. I have lots of videos on my channel with guidance for building muscle and gaining strength which may be of help for you!
I had a problem on my shoulder rotation beginning of this year after went back to the gym at 73 years old ,now I am okay but will do this exercise to strengthen it better ,thank you 🙏❤️
Loving this exercise. I have intermittent shoulder pain but I can certainly feel the muscle fatigue. I'm using a thicker band and holding it closer together to mimic what you're doing. I'm making sure to point my thumbs up so I feel this is getting it done.
Just did this for the first time, 5 reps, then maxed out. Feeling a nice healthy burn in my shoulders. I love that this hits so many muscles in one exercise. Thanks again, Will. FYI, I used a medium mini band for this; tension was about right for me at this time. Think I'll do another set now.
Hello, a few years ago, as a result of a Lyme disease, muscle loss developed in the left arm and upper back (de facto paralysis). As a result, the left shoulder blade has permanently slipped down several centimeters, which of course has consequences for shoulder mobility. The muscle loss could be treated with medication, but the problems with the shoulder blade and joint remained. I've tried a lot of things, but I like this one best. Since I don't have a training band, I spontaneously used a tension strap that I had lying around at home for the bike. This works perfectly. Thank you very much, Will, and best regards from Germany.
As a lifelong swimmer, this is a great exercise (and addingbin the weights). The aged shoulders need all the help they can get to keep doing the sport I love.
I am so glad I found this! For years I did dips with no pain, but the last couple of years (69 now) I have intermittent rotator cuff pain after re-starting dip training. It seems to take me months to get rid of said pain, by avoiding the very exercises that hurt (dips of course, pull ups). I recently suffered a distal bicep tendon tear so for the immediate future no dips or pullups (unless assisted). Again thanks for demonstrating this exercise!
I can't wait to start this exercise! I've had the worst time with my shoulders for the past 2 years. Every exercise causes spasms or pain post-workout. Thanks!
Thanks! That's great info. I've had a shoulder injury for 6 months. Just started doing some rotator cuff exercises. I am going to try this one tomorrow
Thanks for this exercise, I have been doing them for a week and my painful shoulders are a lot better. All the shoulder muscles fire when I do the exercise and feel relieved after. Thanks once again .
Huge thanks for this vid, Will. I have your book! I have an old rotator cuff injury that never quite goes away. I'm hoping this exercise will help. Most appreciated.
This channel is great! I've recently started lifting dumbbells and getting quite strong, but I have been worrying about getting overstrong in narrowly defined muscle groups. These exercises will help me maintain stability and prevent injury
Thanks very much for this video (and for all your others, they're fab!) I've had some mild shoulder problems and know I should be doing shoulder exercises. There are so many exercises out there that it's impossible to know which is best. So glad to have found this, I'll start doing it today.
It works! 🎉 I have been doing this for several months, not regularly, though. Just 1 minute or so daily. And suddenly I noticed that I could rotate my left arm along a wall again. I also tried to stretch both arms as far as possible backwards with a slight outward movement above the head with the elastic band. In the beginning, there was a strange sensation, as if a string was running over my shoulder blade, each time I lowered my arms during the this exercise whilst keeping the elastic stretched outwards. Does anyone know what that is?
Thank you for this. Just the sort of thing I'm needing. I'm 71 but i keep fit at the gym. But I have to be very careful with shoulder work! I've suffered from unstable shoulders on and off for quite a long time!
Outstanding. My first sets and I can feel the pulling together. I was a gymnast, rings was my specialty. I was told I would need to do push-ups for my shoulders for the rest of my life. Tore RC and have been nursing my shoulder. Honestly the band gave me immediate hope. 72 y o and I'm excited to do sets tomorrow. 😅
Couple weeks ago, carried a heavy grocery bag on left shoulder. Since then my shoulder gets very tender when moving my left arm. I will try this exercise starting today and hopefully my shoulder will get better day by day. This video came just in time. Thanks Will.
I've been watching this channel for a few months now and I find it to be an extremely useful and informative channel. I also have some issues with getting injury or inflammation with tendons and ligaments at various times. And the exercises shown have helped me out greatly. Much appreciate.
Thank you for your excellent channel and videos. I have a request. Could you do a video on the best exercises to help increase leg mobility for swinging your leg up and over a bicycle, or for climbing over a wooden fence, for example. I actually have good strength and conditioning for running, bicycling, weightlifting, squatting, deadlift, etc. But for some reason my leg mobility for swinging over a bicycle has really declined over the years.
Hi there - I have the following videos which may prove beneficial! ua-cam.com/video/zmZ8jB3QWXc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Ae9zGuqSGGM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/-tPWO2rQri4/v-deo.html
Will definitely try to I corporate this into my routine. I am being challenged to try exercises that help, but don’t overstress, my shoulder when do arm workouts.
Folks under 50, this is wonderful for you as well. Personally, I am only 49 and have nerve damage so I have difficulty doing some things. I have been doing a variation of these for the last year and they have worked wonders. Now the under 50s I am talking about is actually any age who want healthy shoulders, I ha e found them excellent as a pre workout exercise even without weights. Bottom line, do these at any age! These are amazing!!
I don't care what side of the street this person drives on!!! This is a good clarified instructional tutorial on elastic band shoulder exercise training!!!
I've been doing similar shoulder exercises as a warm-up prior to doing weights at the gym. Not only strengthen my shoulders but also added gains to my weightlifting. I'll add these to my list. Thank you.
Great video, thank you! Please be careful with over the head arm work for those with high blood pressure as it could increase blood pressure. Ask your doctor if lying down would be an acceptable alternative.
As a retirement age but still very active musician and cellist I use my shoulders , particularly the right shoulder, a lot every day. This exercise is a new one to me but since I am already using a mobility program which uses resistance bands I can easily add this one to my routine. Thank you!
If the issue is the right shoulder don't forget that it is often referred pain from the gall bladder. Milk thistle extract CAN fix that but dietary changes along with taurine, HMB, magnesium powder and potassium also works.
Oh my thank You Sir Will Harlow I have been trying some exercises from physical therapy they help me a lot. One thing for sure this is the farthest from any exercise I have been introduced to that actually fit me the best I have been looking for the best exercise to fit my health needs requirements and my God you got it Thank You for sharing this gift of Health improvement for healthier and stronger shoulders💌🤗❤️✌️& 🙏 every day❣️From Harrisburg Pennsylvania ❣️

I'm 78 and now use a wooden walking stick, not a cane. I have never tripped with a wooden walking stick, I have tripped with metal poles.

what would be "a variation of this exercise"?
But be very careful, I tore a ligament doing that and it was 6 months before I could do a pull up and a full year to regain previous range of motion.
I learned a variation of this years ago that I do every day and show other people how to do. It helps so much. Loving this new option to try.
Really good exercise. I'll add this to my old lady workout routine

I had frozen shoulder on both sides that lasted 5 months. Looking forward to trying this to regain some strength!
Been there. They do get better but demand a bit of patience.
- Keep a close eye on any lumps in your armpits or breast area. The lymph nodes were not draining properly when your shoulders were frozen.

I'm sorry to hear about your shoulder injury - I hope this exercise proves helpful for you!
Just what I needed, thank you.
Glad my video came at the right time for you!
Couple weeks ago, carried a heavy grocery bag on left shoulder. Since then my shoulder gets very tender when moving my left arm. I will try this exercise starting today and hopefully my shoulder will get better day by day. This video came just in time. Thanks Will.
So pleased my video came at the right time for you! I'm wishing you all the best in your healing journey and I hope for a speedy recovery :)
I've been watching this channel for a few months now and I find it to be an extremely useful and informative channel. I also have some issues with getting injury or inflammation with tendons and ligaments at various times. And the exercises shown have helped me out greatly. Much appreciate.
Thank you so much for your comment, I'm so pleased to hear you've found these exercises helpful! Keep up the great work 😃
Thank you for your excellent channel and videos.
Hi there - I have the following videos which may prove beneficial! ua-cam.com/video/zmZ8jB3QWXc/v-deo.html

Bloody hell, I'm 41, not out of shape, and this was harder than I was expecting! 😂 Had a partial tare a couple of months ago.
Very good exercise, thank you so much!
You're welcome!
So pleased to hear they've been so helpful for you!
Thanks for those great exercises! Will put them in my daily exercises! ❤❤
Can't wait to try this. I had both shoulders replaced three years ago and the exercises the PT prescribed to strengthen them have not helped much.
This looks perfect. I can do it at home as well as in the gym.
Great to hear it!
I don't care what side of the street this person drives on!!!
This is a good clarified instructional tutorial on elastic band shoulder exercise training!!!
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you so much, I have been doing shoulder exercises for months; this one is new to me and really helps.
Thank you! All your exercises and stretches for flexibility to keep muscles strong and active and keep from injury have been so helpful for me.
I'm so pleased to hear they've been helpful!
Bellissimo video!
Esercizi ottimi spiegati in modo chiaro e semplice.
Grazie!
Thank you! I liked and appreciated the variations.
Great to hear that!
Wow! I just did with bands and with dumbbells and it feels great! I will be adding this to the rotation. Thank you sir.
So pleased to hear you'll be putting this to good use!
I've been doing similar shoulder exercises as a warm-up prior to doing weights at the gym. Not only strengthen my shoulders but also added gains to my weightlifting. I'll add these to my list. Thank you.
I hope they prove to be a beneficial addition to your routine!
Thanks for the vid. Would be good to link to the underpinning research for those that are that way inclined :)
This was extremely helpful. I combine these with pistol squats for a great cardio variation.
Great work!
Pretty straightforward & useful.
Thanks.
Great video, thank you! Please be careful with over the head arm work for those with high blood pressure as it could increase blood pressure. Ask your doctor if lying down would be an acceptable alternative.
You are giving great advice and demonstrating that on your channel and I’m glad I subscribed
Thanks so much for this exercise! It targets exactly the specific rotator cuff muscles that are weak in my shoulders.
Very happy to help!
Great exercise
Thank you!
This is awesome & so easy to do! Thank you.
Brilliant, you’re doing a great job and needed for so many people 👍😊🕺
Great exercise! Thank you.
Excellent Will, thanks again 👍
You're most welcome!
As a retirement age but still very active musician and cellist I use my shoulders , particularly the right shoulder, a lot every day. This exercise is a new one to me but since I am already using a mobility program which uses resistance bands I can easily add this one to my routine. Thank you!
I hope it proves to be a welcome addition to your routine!
@@HT-Physio Adding small weights ( 2 lb) and gripping them strongly with a resistance band is quite useful and a surprising addition! Thank you!
Very helpful! Could you make a fist to increase activation without using dumbells?
If the issue is the right shoulder don't forget that it is often referred pain from the gall bladder. Milk thistle extract CAN fix that but dietary changes along with taurine, HMB, magnesium powder and potassium also works.
Interesting...thanks!
Fantastic video... I'll definitely be adding this to my routine
Well done, Thank You. I’ve done this on the back extension for even more recruitment ✅
