I practice with my machine unthreaded. Then I might thread machine and practice stitching. When I cover material all over and want to practice more I thread again with another color. Do this as many times as you wish. The different color stitches lets me see how well I am doing. When you have covered practice piece and need a new one use it to make a potholder interlining.

Doodling with a pencil on paper is actually the opposite of what you do at the machine. I tried to figure out how to rig up a pencil so I could move paper under it, but my imagination and skill failed me. Thank you for solving this problem for me! It's so simple, but ingenious! I am deeply grateful and am looking forward to finally conquering some simple free-motion.

Great idea! I have everything ready to go,printed patterns to place under a vinyl shower curtain to practice on. And as someone else suggested, 1 inch lines drawn to practice cursive o's,e's and c's. However even the shortest marker will not fit on throat of my machine. I will mount on front in line with needle and see how it goes. Practice is practice, memory skills here I come!

No don't throw away make pot holders out of them ,,, I put binding on mine and use them as pot holders. I know to use double ones to take something out of the oven , has they are not so thick. I have seen people using Moda fabric to practice on,, well I'm not that well off so I use my scraps or older fabric that I have picked up at a thrift. I just don't like to waste.

This is one of the best learning tools for quilting I have seen ! I've also been down the quilt sandwich road over and over. I'm sewing a Christmas panel quilt and I have had the top done for 2 weeks now by I just can't seem to figure out the quilting. Some of it will be simple outlines with some echoing but there are areas I want to do a meandering loopy line with stars and I think this will be a great way to practice! Thank you so much for for sharing this wonderful technique.

Very, very cleaver, Tracy! You are truly an outside-the-box thinker. I've heard of making practice free motion quilt sandwiches out of sheets of paper towels, which can then be used for household cleaning and thrown away afterward (re-use, re-cycle). While I've not yet had the nerve to try free motion quilting yet, when I do I'm going to first try the paper towel method while looking at the quilt pattern I wish to try to replicate. If that doesn't work, I'll try chalk stamping the pattern on a paper towel quilt sandwich. The nice thing about free motion quilting on fabric with a busy design like a scrap quilt, is that any mistakes will probably be very difficult to see once the quilt is washed and dried. The maker of the quilt will probably be the only person who can find the mistake unless it's blatantly obvious. Hmmm.... maybe a scrappy quilt should be where I start free motion quilting on fabric. Thanks for another thought-provoking video, Tracy!!! You're the bomb! 😀 🙋🏻‍♀️

    • @TheSewingChannel

*_Dori- I've never heard of the paper towel hack...but that sounds like a good one too! A scrappy quilt is a great starting point!✅ I'm usually the only one who can see my mistakes LOL I think us quilters worry too much about being perfect.....it's art-💜Have a great day Dori💛_*

I'd definitely be holding the fabric closer to the needle as I FMQ - at the end. It feels like to me, the foot is too close to the fabric - as it is pushing it. I find the hack an interesting idea though I just "do it" and don't really practice all that much. I figure that I can practice all day and never feel like I'm 'there', so I just do it.
