My biggest quilting struggle is. Grip. I feel like my machine and I don’t get along. I slowly I’ve the fabric and the machine just takes off. As a result my ribbon candy and squiggly lines are horrendous
My biggest quilting struggle is relaxing while doing it! I get so tense that I can’t move anything - not the quilt or my arms the day after 😬🙄😉 I’m working on remembering to let the shoulders go down every five minutes 😉
I was told to practice free motion by first quilting-from-the-back. It's an old technique of getting a busy backing fabric, like large flowers or fall leaves. You practice by following the design in the fabric, like maybe picking every repeat of a particular set of flowers and following the outline of each petal. The positives to this method is that you get familiar with moving the fabric,, you learn how following a specific line (great when you later mark a design on the front and need to follow it), and since it's the back, people won't notice any mistakes you make. And on the front, all they see the pretty flowers or leaves and think you are a very skilled quilter! LOL
Thank you for showing us all your mistakes, and what effect speed has on the stitches. This was much more informative than seeing someone doing the stitching perfectly. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Good work!
Thanks for keeping it real. I think a lot of tutorials/teachers are so experienced they make it look easy and forget that at the beginning you will find it tricky and make mistakes. I might give it another try instead of sticking to stitch in the ditch. 😅

You are so right' I had to find all this out over 20 years ago when I had breast cancer . My doctor said I would live any where from 2years to 5. With treatments…I’m so thankful he answered me when I said “and what if I don’t do the treatments you recommend?” He said “about the same amount of time” “well I’m going to trust God in this “ He sent me a registered letter stating he was no longer my doctor. I trusted God went to Colorado Springs and went through a program that offered me hope in natural ways to reclaim my health.. In the years following have learned so much about health care. Sadly I have watched friends die (under doctors care) because they just didn’t have the faith that Gods design of the human body to heal was a reality. Thank you for all you said on your video maybe some day things will change.

The instruction I received was not long enough and was told to just go for it! This is bad advice! I loved how you showed us the errors that can occur...long and short stitches and the designs. Delightful attitude and great advice. You get a big "thumbs up" from me! I sometimes draw a design on freezer paper, lightly iron it to the quilt, then follow the pattern on the paper. The paper tears away - just make your stitches small enough to be strong when you remove the paper.
I'm often frozen by the need for perfection, even though I'm still learning the basics. This is an awesome video of practicing and not being perfect (even though it still looks pretty darn great)! It gives me courage, and permission to play. Thank you!

This was exactly the advice I needed. I wanted to try free-motion quilting and was too scared to start for fear I would ruin it. Now I can doodle, play with a practice piece and eventually, enjoy having a go. I love that you showed all your quilting - even the bits that you didn’t think went so well. So helpful!

Sugaridoo, I always make quilts/blankets. I call them "Quilets" because I did not know how to free motion. I have watched several free motion quilting videos. Yours blows the others away. I really appreciate every step and instruction. It is also great that you showed us some imperfections, which by the way still look great. A quilt is homemade so it is always nice to see some imperfections. I am definitely not a perfectionist, so thank you. RB

Thank you for the tutorial video, now I know how to get started with my domestic sewing machine. Wasn't even sure I would be able to do machine quilting with my old machine.
This one is very good to watch. You explain everything from beginning to end. A lot of the UA-cam's just even for the beginning ones. Don't explain a lot of different stuff that should be explained. I did not realize you had to put your stitching to zero.
This video is fantastic. I started a huge quilt years ago, didn't end up liking the colors after the quilt top was finished so it just sat in the closet. For years! And years! Actually, more than a decade :( I just got it out & I'm determined to finish it even if I don't like the finished product. It will give me much needed experience to go on & make a quilt I love. In the mean time, I replaced my sewing machine with a Juki quilting machine. It has all the bells & whistles, but still, I didn't attempt the free motion quilting because I didn't know what I was doing & I was afraid of it. So my Juki quilting machine has not been used for quilting :( since I bought it a few years ago. Now, after watching Sugaridoo's vid, I'm excited. She doesn't stress or make it scary. I'm also going to listen to jazz while I'm attempting this. The piano was so relaxing. Now, back to the video. I'm going to watch it again :))
I know this was 3 years ago, but have you considered painting over the colors you dont like? You put a lot of work into yoiur quilt. Im finally getting some Jaquard brand paints- Their Textile Paints, Luminere, and Neopaque lines are great!

Thank you for this very encouraging video! You have shared information that I never knew or saw anywhere else (stitch length, height adjusting the free motion foot). Very cheery and fun video. Can hardly wait to get started.
I had a jelly roll and did the jelly roll race quilt and then i quilted each row with different stitches. Now when i want to free motion quilting i pull out the jelly roll quilt to see how the different stitches look and then i can practice the stitch i like on a scrap sandwich before i tackle the newest quilt. One lady in town does one test block of quilting it allows her to see how well the block works and if it looks like the pattern. She puts these sample blocks in a bag and when i was learning to free motion quilting i would take a block and make a sandwich and quilt it. She would then go over the quilting i did and offer tips. For her 75th birthday she did 75 quilts and she gifted her guests with a quilt.

You are just a breath of fresh air sweetie. I'm NEW as can be to quilting. Tried making a few garment items years and years ago--25 or more. Recently decided to try my hobby hand at sewing again. LOVE free stich quilting!!! You showing imperfect results is very encouraging to those of us who may struggle with putting forth so much effort and still not getting what we want. Your comment that we wouldn't be able to paint the first time we pick up a paint brush hit home. Very smart. Keep up the good work, and than you so much for this inspiring video.
I just finished FMQ a quilt for the first time. I wasn't aware I needed to put stitch length at zero. It turned out alright, some sloppy stitches but was getting nicer stitches as I went along and got more comfortable. My machine doesn't have a large throat area and that hindered my movement. The quilt was going to be for charity, but I decided to keep for me to compare as I continue quilting.
It’s true. Quilting gives me tense shoulders. But I still enjoy it💕 Using a thread which matches most parts of the quilt colours also helps to hide imperfections. But it really doesn’t matter🤗

I LOVED this video! You were so cute! So many of my questions were answered! I really liked the loopti-loops on the mini quilt as opposed to the square or triangles, they seemed easier and lovelier. Thank you for the video..I know that there are many beginners out there and your video will be very helpful to them. A couple of things that I do when FMQ....I ensure my machine has stopped with the needle in the down position before adjusting my hands. You will have much less control if you adjust your hands while the machine is still running. Also, I have found that it’s much easier to handle the bulk of a large quilt by fan folding it within the throat space, rather than rolling it. Rolling it can become difficult to move the quilt as you are quilting, whereas fan folding it allows the quilt to move freely.
Thanks so much for this video!! It’s nice to see a tutorial with a bigger quilt than a sample size (which is what I see in most FMQ tutorials)! And I love how you demonstrated the differences with speed of stitching & moving the fabric. I have the same machine as you do. Love the extra throat space to quilt!!

Just watched your video. Love your comments for beginners. I am also a beginner who has watched all of Angela Walters videos. Like you I held on to the rolled edges of my quilt and it felt very weird to me. For someone who has been sewing for nearly 50 years and making quilt tops for half of that, I would tie quilts. For the past year I have been FMQ off and on. One thing I found extremely helpful is using a quilting slider. There are several different ones on the market. It makes FMQ so much easier and now I just spread my hands and not hold on the rolls. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to more of your videos. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this very encouraging video! You have shared information that I never knew or saw anywhere else (stitch length, height adjusting the free motion foot). Very cheery and fun video. Can hardly wait to get started.
I had a jelly roll and did the jelly roll race quilt and then i quilted each row with different stitches. Now when i want to free motion quilting i pull out the jelly roll quilt to see how the different stitches look and then i can practice the stitch i like on a scrap sandwich before i tackle the newest quilt. One lady in town does one test block of quilting it allows her to see how well the block works and if it looks like the pattern. She puts these sample blocks in a bag and when i was learning to free motion quilting i would take a block and make a sandwich and quilt it. She would then go over the quilting i did and offer tips. For her 75th birthday she did 75 quilts and she gifted her guests with a quilt.

I have just started to do free motion quilting and realized very quickly that it does require a lot of practice, practice, practice. My first few quilt sandwiches were just awful but I have improved. You are just a breath of fresh air sweetie. I'm NEW as can be to quilting. Tried making a few garment items years and years ago--25 or more. Recently decided to try my hobby hand at sewing again. LOVE free stich quilting!!! You showing imperfect results is very encouraging to those of us who may struggle with putting forth so much effort and still not getting what we want. Your comment that we wouldn't be able to paint the first time we pick up a paint brush hit home. Very smart. Keep up the good work, and than you so much for this inspiring video.

I just finished FMQ a quilt for the first time. I wasn't aware I needed to put stitch length at zero. It turned out alright, some sloppy stitches but was getting nicer stitches as I went along and got more comfortable. My machine doesn't have a large throat area and that hindered my movement. The quilt was going to be for charity, but I decided to keep for me to compare as I continue quilting.

It’s true. Quilting gives me tense shoulders. But I still enjoy it💕 Using a thread which matches most parts of the quilt colours also helps to hide imperfections. But it really doesn’t matter🤗

I LOVED this video! You were so cute! So many of my questions were answered! I really liked the loopti-loops on the mini quilt as opposed to the square or triangles, they seemed easier and lovelier. Thank you for the video..I know that there are many beginners out there and your video will be very helpful to them. A couple of things that I do when FMQ....I ensure my machine has stopped with the needle in the down position before adjusting my hands. You will have much less control if you adjust your hands while the machine is still running. Also, I have found that it’s much easier to handle the bulk of a large quilt by fan folding it within the throat space, rather than rolling it. Rolling it can become difficult to move the quilt as you are quilting, whereas fan folding it allows the quilt to move freely.

Just watched your video. Love your comments for beginners. I am also a beginner who has watched all of Angela Walters videos. Like you I held on to the rolled edges of my quilt and it felt very weird to me. For someone who has been sewing for nearly 50 years and making quilt tops for half of that, I would tie quilts. For the past year I have been FMQ off and on. One thing I found extremely helpful is using a quilting slider. There are several different ones on the market. It makes FMQ so much easier and now I just spread my hands and not hold on the rolls. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to more of your videos. Thank you for sharing.
