BRILLIANT tutorial!! I'm 65, finally just invested in my dream machine (Bernina Q16) and have been absolutely terrified to start using it -- on my 55+ UFOs! I appreciate you :)
WOW! this would have to be the best tutorial I have seen on free motion quilting for beginners. You explain everything so well and at a steady pace. Thank you so much. 😊
I love all your videos and just ordered your purple hoop. I am 74, been sewing for over 60 years. Now am a beginner quilter. I have had my bernina since1989! I want to learn free motion quilting and your video is by far the best! I so enjoy your quilting projects and I will be using all your great suggestions for my new project! Thank you so very much!
Hi Kristi, you can find the hoop on our website here: pqw.com.au/product/fmqh215/ or included in our Mastering Free Motion Kit here: pqw.com.au/product/mmqkit2/ And we ship worldwide!
I have watched many free motion tutorials but I found this one the very best. You certainly have impressed me with your knowledge, expertise, teaching style and showing this free motion can definitely be fun. I can hardly wait to get back at it again! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ali, we are thrilled you have found this video so informative and enjoyable! Good luck with getting back into Free Motion quilting, we would love to hear how you go.
Hi. I stumbled on your Sashers page. I recognized them and ran to my drawer! I had bought them years ago and never used them. Now I know how. I also fell into this one and really appreciate the tips! I have that mat. I have a ring! Goodness me! Off to play and practice! Thank you!
I've found your suggestion of using the left foot very helpful. After 5 years of flirting with this type of quilting, I am now feeling hopeful about eventually begin able to free motion quilt. Thank you Pauline.
I can't thank you enough Pauline for this tutorial Using doorstops to raise the machine is ingenious as is the tip about positioning the foot pedal. I'm a leftie, so hopefully that will help! I love FMQ but am often disappointed with the results. I attended a workshop a few years ago and we were taught speed is of the essence - this is probably why I struggle I was also encouraged to use the stop/start button on the machine. It's foot pedal from now on. No more painful neck and shoulders!!
I am glad you enjoyed my video, I have sat at my machine with it tilted for years now and it really does work. I think we are much better learning to to quilt Free Motion at a slower speed till we learn control of the fabric under the needle . Once we have that under control we can speed up. Enjoy
Of all the free motion quilting videos I have watched, none compare to this one. You get into the physical mechanics on how to adjust the machine and the quilter. The tools you used I have never seen. I have been so frustrated trying to learn how to control the pedal and my hands. You make it look so easy. I feel I just might be able to master free motion. Thank you for making this video.
Brand new subscriber here and I just want to say this was a lovely tutorial!! I have learned so much in just 16 plus minutes!! Thanks so much and I look forward to following along and learning so much more!! BTW....tuning in from Alberta Canada 🍁
Thank you Pauline I'm a beginner to quilting your video makes it seem easier than I thought Free motion quilting was terrifying me.I will try all your tips you gave
Hi Mary Ann, I am glad you enjoyed my video I hope you can learn my way of quilting as it is so much easier for us who don't like Free Motion quilting. Have a tone of fun creating and learning. Cheers Pauline
I am so pleased your video was in my you tube feed today, subscribing right this minute! I’ve just started quilting, love hand stitching, but don’t have the luxury of time. Thank you so much for todays tips!
Your video and tips are amazing. I tried many of them this morning after some time as a failure in free motion quilting. My machine is now tilted and the foot under my left foot and the needle. What a difference, thank you sew much for making this come true for me. ❤😂🎉
I got the rubber door stoppers you recommended and I'm thrilled to report I didn't get a stiff sore neck and shoulders after tilting the machine towards me. Thank you! Thank you!
Wonderful tips I've never seen before. I need a hoop!! So many times my needle has skipped. Moving the foot pedal and raising the back of machine will definitely help! I have my machine set with needle to go down at the end automatically, that helped me a lot.
You have single handedly remove the inherent terror that I’ve harbored regarding free motion quilting, I think I can do it now. Thank you most sincerely!
Hi Dan, I am thrilled you are learning and enjoying my videos. Thank you for your lovely comment. Keep watching as I have lots more videos coming for you. Cheers Pauline
Thank you, I get such a sore back when I sew. I am going to try tilting my machine. Haven’t tried the free hand quilting yet but will get there eventually. I really like the purple hoop. You are a great sewing designer and your tools are great.
Just watched my first video from you as recommended by the salesperson in a quilt store today when I went looking for a glide mat. They didn't sell them but she had praise for your methods and products. I have ordered the beginners kit and can't wait to put your great tips into practice. Also great only coming from over the border.👍♥️
WHat wonderful tips these are, Pauline! I'm a new quilter who is intimidated by FMQ. I think these will help me immensely. Greetings and thanks from Ilinois, U.S.A.
Glad it was helpful Connie! Take a look at our Controlled Quilting videos to see Pauline's beginner-friendly technique, if you would like to see another option 😊
What a beautiful Tutorial for Free Motion Quilting. This is the best I have seen and now so much more confident in taking this on. Excellent how this is all explained to you. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this tutorial.
Very nice and helpful tutorial. Thank you. Your points about posture took back to the 70’s when my Home Economic teacher stressed posture almost more than technique. I still hear her voice when I feel myself slouch. You are so right about avoiding the fatigue that bad posture can cause. Enough on that topic. Your tips on FMQ are excellent. Thank you again. I’m going to practice a lot this week so I can do my first quilt of FMQ.
Thank you for the suggestion of setting stitch length at zero instead of dropping the feed dogs. I have a 1939 Singer treadle, and no way to drop the feed dogs. Setting stitch length to zero was perfect! Thank you again! I don't know if my machine ever came with a feed dog cover, but if it did, it's long gone now.
