There's an interview with Brian where he talks about how difficult it can be making simple lyrics that aren't cliche or cringey. "God fell silent when I cried out." One of those golden simple lines that hits like a fucking truck.
I'm just getting into lyric writing, and it's so dang hard to write things that are genuine, impactful, saying what you mean to without feeling super cringe about it 😂
I was a late comer too. A converted hater one might say. Now I think they're the best thing in heavy music. An absolute breath of fresh air. Only a handful of contemporary heavy bands can truly stand out in a sea of 5 second clips.
They literally just take the most popular type of breakdowns and riffs from a decade ago and put shitty vocals on them. They haven’t done a single original thing since their inception except for somehow convince people to tolerate their vocalist
I saw knocked loose at Blue Ridge 2023 My first knocked loose concert. I left with my shirt torn, my nose bleeding standing like injured vegeta. And it was fuckin awesome
Yeah Oli in Archspire is my favorite for inhales. He’s done them less and less from album to album but it’s so cool as a technique to keeps the lines coming. Exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, without a break. Also again hugely helpful video. I recently figured out this batshit insane black metal scream and it’s uncomfortable as hell but this gives me hope that I can figure out to do it safely.
I heard them on the slioknot tour. I'm not usually a fan higher pitched screaming vocals. After a minute, i was blown away. The dual vocals are perfect. The rhythm is different. The riffs are insane great! Instant fan.
I'm usually not a huge fan of this band, but DAMN this went hard. I even enjoyed the vocals more than usual, and your analysis on them was great. Also, I really appreciated the part where you talked about recording "unsafe" vocals for your music. I'm into noise, as well as metal, and two of my favorite vocalists are Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota) and Margaret Chardiet (Pharmakon), and they both do screams in an untrained manner. They sound so raw and unhinged, so sometimes I throw them in my own music for added effect.
It’s most definitely inhaled. You should check out Snuffed on Sight. I’d like to hear what you have to say about the vocals. I’m fairly positive they are probably the only modern band where the majority of the vocals are inhaled.
You're obviously entitled to your own opinion but that is exactly the change/clarification I wanted to hear from you because I respect your knowledge and I love Bryans voice.
I have seen them twice live now and have heard Bryan do the gutturals live and wished so badly he'd do them on a record. The entire band are absolute animals live! Never seen a band bring so much energy. I am sure Kublai Khan TX comes close tho!
Yo been watching your channel for a hot minute (i just made this account) always loved the breakdown on vocals and analysis on everything. Ive tried taking what you say and applying it. Keep doing what you're doing my guy! Also this band is sick!
I always love your take on music I like, its not just a "Cool stuff, bro", you have something to say with a professional perspective. Pleeaaase do the new Knocked Loose feat. Poppy "Suffocate". It´s mad good, gorgeous terror :D. Keep it going!
i saw them live with motionless in white, alpha wolf, and after the burial and that was THE BEST FUCKING CONCERT EVER. i got fucked up in the mosh pit lmfao, but i also crowdsurfed during behold the crown and lost my shoe in the process, but i just held up the other one by the pit and someone was holding on to it lol.
Jonny McBee from The Browning I’m pretty sure uses mostly inhales. May need a fact check on that though. Also Alex Koehler used inhales on that the Chelsea Grin EP as well.
boundaries kublai kahn and knocked loose are my favorite hardcore bands by far. You should do a video on a new band called mirar. Its deathcore/Blackened but thall and it slaps.
I thought it was just an exhaled "bree" but the onset is cut off. I dont really hear the whine the slower chop in growls (my experience with inhales, the lower you go the more noticeable each wave is where higher it gets more a breathy screech. I could be way off, but it sounded too clean and crisp to be an inhale.
sounds like an inhale to me, alot of japanese metal vocalist do inhale screams, and many of them in interviews say they do inhale so hearing that type of gasp-y airiness my ear registers it as inhale, nonetheless its still fire!
I live in Northern Ireland and it's also extremely common to "Norse agree". It's not really a word or anything in particular, it's just a sound that's somewhere along the lines of combining "aye" with an inhaled gasp.
In the words of a discord moderator Vlad the Inhaler... Inhales should be the sprinkles on your ice cream Sunday. Let the ice cream and fudge shine and add just a pop of sprinkles on top to take it to the next level. No one wants to eat a bowl of sprinkles. With that logic I'd say Brian's "EEEEEYERRRR" at the breakdown was tastefully placed.
Haha nah fam this entire video is me realizing they are only getting better and the more I listen to them the more I dig their tunes. I was skeptical about knocked loose when I first heard them a year or two ago, but I've grown into a pretty big fan
that’s an inhale. i’m tired of people saying inhales are dangerous. the only time i’ve ever been hoarse or anything from vocals is from exhales. i’ve inhaled for 15 years with no problem ever. it’s just another tool to use, and it’s nice because there are sounds you can hit like pterodactyl screeches that can be held out or lows for a ridiculous amount of time. anyone who says inhales are the trademark of a bad vocalist just have that weird old gatekeeper true metal mindset that was common in the 90’s and early 2000’s. it’s just another vocal style.
i really like this song a lot even though i'm a Christian. 😂the double-time parts are incredible, too. Knocked Loose needs to do more of the hardcore punk type of hardcore IMO. that being said, i liked Deep In The Willow/Everything Is Quiet Now double feature a little more because i am more in to metal than i am in to punk. i grew up as a punk kid, oddly enough. still a solid 9.5/10 for me on this track 😎
I really think it's an exhale, I don't know. It sounds like what he does live. It sounds like his main high shouting thing brought into a rounded vowel. I honestly don't think Bryan knows any other technique (no hate, i love KL) and think he just brought his main sound into a gutteral mouth position. If you listen to him do his gutterals live, his voice cracks a lot like his old vocals used to
His voice is actually what turns me off of them. It's a style of vocals that is hard for me to take serious because he sounds silly to me. Couldn't put my finger on it til I saw the SpongeBob joke about his voice. On point.
Their EP A Tear In The Fabric of Life really was the first time I felt his voice click with the lyrical content. Bryan channels and paints the feeling of despair very well, even when he’s incredibly angry
I’m sorry, I just can’t get into Brian’s vocals. Band fucks hard, but not a fan of the high pitched distorted belt (or whatever style it is) :( I’m sowwwyyyy
You might get into them eventually, I used to hate his vocals too, but I couldn't ignore how good they are outside of that. So I just tolerated his vocals, for the sake of enjoying the instrumentals. But then I found that on a handful of songs, his screechy vocals really helped drive forward the sound of pure anger and despair, and I started thinking.. "damn, if that was a different vocalist, that wouldn't have hit as hard." And from that point, I started to appreciate his unique vocals. Maybe at some point, something will just click for you also.
Whether or not this guy's actually good at his craft is one thing, but for someone to sit there and say that his vocals sound nice to the ears is a bald-faced lie. Either that or you have no taste
something "sounding nice" is 100% subjective. you cant lie when you state your opinion. calling it a lie implies objectivity but then you say its based on taste which contradicts that. just say its not for you, get over it dawg

Boom! Thanks for doing this :-)
I 10000% thought the tunnel throat was isaac bc I hadn't watched the video yet. AMAZING that that's bryan. Versatile, and absolutely violent
The vocalist from The Browning uses primarily inhales and he's been going at it for over a decade 🤷♂️
I always love your take on music I like, its not just a "Cool stuff, bro", you have something to say with a professional perspective. Pleeaaase do the new Knocked Loose feat. Poppy "Suffocate". It´s mad good, gorgeous terror :D. Keep it going!

I remember when you said, bryan is gonna loose his voice soon !!!
Bryan does that all the time when they’re playing live lol he did it at LDB a while back and it was fucking sick
Knocked Loose killlllls it live. Caught them at Furnace Fest and holy shit it was amazing. Also deffff do Dexcore!!!
Video was shot all on flim too!
i think its exhale, sounds like the same technique the vocalist from acrania does
boundaries kublai kahn and knocked loose are my favorite hardcore bands by far. You should do a video on a new band called mirar. Its deathcore/Blackened but thall and it slaps.
Fuck yeah boundaries!
Love all three of those, have also been listening to Mouth for War, the album that came late last year is amazing. Also, Harm's Way!
In Finland its quite normal to say random yes or no's inhaling during conversation

Bryan did gutterals on K//L releases prior to “pop culture”. They should be on UA-cam
The "norse agree" you talk about could actually be northen sweden where we say "schuuu" inhaled to say yes or agree to something :)
I live in Northern Ireland and it's also extremely common to "Norse agree". It's not really a word or anything in particular, it's just a sound that's somewhere along the lines of combining "aye" with an inhaled gasp.
It’s also a thing with the older generations (boomer and older) in Maine. An inhaled “ayut” as an agreement.
Their best song!
