    Ray you had some great points regarding hunting using subsonic .300 Blackout. There are a few specialized bullets that can help give better performance, such as Hornady's SUB-X 190gr. projectile. That particular bullet will mushroom similar to a pistol hollow point, which as we all know also isn't an ideal fight stopper. However it would at least be better than a non expanding Full Metal Jacket or Open Tip Match style bullet. Thanks for making the video!

  • @HarrysHolsters
    @HarrysHolsters Рік тому +13

    With Q the biggest performance gain is in weight savings and size. Really just different guns. 99% of users will probably be better suited with the Ruger.
    It would be interesting to see groups shot with a being used chrono so we could see the deviation in velocity and if that has an affect on the group. It'd just be interesting to see what subsonic 300 ammo is the most consistent.
    The Q vs the B&T would be interesting.

    I don’t imagine the Q people will be super happy with this. Lol I have no problem with expensive stuff, but I think it’s only natural to expect more for the money. To me what’s more suspect than the performance on the Q’s, is the fact that two would be so different. For that price they should be tested individually… You shouldn’t have to hope to get lucky on a 4k rifle.

    I’ve got a mini fix and light primer strikes are definitely a thing. It only happens with certain ammo that uses the harder military type primers. I reload and I’ve found that CCI 400 primers have 100% reliability with the mini fix. It’s really fun with 300 subs and supers and also with the 223 barrel I have for it. It’s not perfect though and I can see why it gets some of the flak that it gets given the price.
    I noticed that yours seems to be throwing shots alot more than I would expect. You might want to take a look at changing out the barrel if you can. Proof Research makes really good barrels for this platform and Q sells some as well (if they’re in stock). It’s possible that Q will help you out, I’ve found their warranty support to be really top notch.

    I think like Phillip above that the Ruger having the longer barrel is more likely to have the better groups. I’m a Q fan, but love that the “cheap” rifle came out on top for accuracy.

    I really like the Ruger for hunting. You can install a Timney trigger in the Ruger American and get a really crisp, no creep 2 lb. trigger pull for about $150. Subs can be used for hunting, but you should use the right bullets (cavityback, maker, Barnes tac-tx, Hornady sub-x) and ranges should be 75 yds and closer. Hunting with subs is like bow hunting with a rifle.

Get a aero precision enhanced hand guard that fits over it, that really changed the game for me. Next is a big bore sub sonic round or a bolt action 300 blk.

    I bought that same ruger a few years ago it never shot subs very well until I used a liner comp, I even tried different cans without much luck. I spent way too much time on the Tupperware making sure it wasn't the problem. The barrel harmonics just worked with the liner. Now suppers for some reason didn't care what was on the end it shot better than I expected around 3/4 11/4 at 100yds, subs were jackrabbit to hog (yes that's a measurement hahaha) but it's stupid quite. The action does suck but the damn thing shoots 110 v-max so good it's my pickup gun that should work for about anything I'll have time to see and stop and do what I need to, and if it falls out or gets beat up I can't get that pissed the scope cost more and if it's still fine I'll just paint it again. Great test and comparison I appreciate it!

    One thing I've found when testing primers is that the firing pin spring has enough power behind it to actually bump the shoulder of the case back a couple thousandths. Non-issue if the primer detonates and the explosion pushes it back out. But for a failure to fire situation, follow on attempts to fire will almost certainly fail as the case now has more space in the chamber to "absorb" the impact of the firing pin along with the fixed firing pin protrusion distance.

    For paper punching my Ruger American in 300 blackout Loves my handholds using Hornady ELD-M 220 grain bullets. For suppression I'm using an older Sig 7.62 TI-QD. Knowing that my barrel can keep really really tight groups, I've decided I'm going to upgrade the cheesy stock to a MDT LSS-XL AR chassis.

It’s a 7 inch barrel with a 1:5 twist. I get pretty good groups consistently with it using stelth and hush 220 grain. I am hoping my SD won’t be a lemon, because I want to swap bolts/barrels on my Elf Owl to be 7.62. I am hoping this rifle will fulfill my .300 b.o bolt action needs 🥵

    Really sucks to see because I love Q. I don’t own any other their firearms though. Just the mount system, cans, and some small stuff but I love the innovation and creativity. I’m finally going to get a mini fix and the SD’s caught my eye recently just because they’re so unique and as a collector too, I just think they’re really neat. I just need something to fill the “super secret squirrel” quiet role for a 300blk sub host. I have a CGS Hyperion I want to put on whatever I get but I wish the ruger’s had a faster twist rate. Although it appears here that it seems to stabilize subs just fine! I sure wish howa still made the 1500 mini action for 300blk. The short barrel bolt action 300blk world is very very limited. I don’t know of any other option these days besides the mini fix without chopping down a ruger or howa 16”

    Was at my LGS when they had to call the ATF to report a destroyed can. They got 3 characters in and the agent correctly guessed the make and model of the can. The manufacturer? Why Q of course. After speaking with the folks at the LGS, they reported that Q had the most damaged/destroyed cans over time - mainly due to weld issues. #2 place was Dead Air - I expect that to change with the current issues with the DA Sierra 5. I would suggest looking into other cans and gear than Q - when they are great they are OK, when they are bad they are terrible - at a huge markup. I know several people who are quite happy with their Ruger American Ranch rifles in 300 BLK, one even put his into a chassis to get the look and function he wanted.
    Now if you want to cheat, get a better rifle and have even more power on tap, get a rifle in 308 (your choice of brand). 308 subsonic just happens to have the same performance as 300 BLK ballistically - same projectile going the same velocity, just as easy to suppress. But supersonic 308 has a whole lot more to give than the best of 300 BLK supersonic. If you are going bolt gun, you do not need to stay with the AR pattern magazine or other limits as you are already getting away from that whole portion of the design parameters of the 300 BLK round. The advantage to the 300 BLK was to get the full advantage of the full AR parts universe with just a barrel change while enjoying what the 300 BLK can do. In bolt actions the largest aftermarket parts area is in Remington action based .308s with decent support with other manufacturers like Bergara, Tikka, Savage, Howa, Ruger and others. To get set up with those, you just need to add a can, purchase or load subsonic 308, and add whatever else you want to your 308. Presto - 300 BLK subsonic performance, with a much larger performance range once you go supersonic. If you go this route, give the Bergara 308s and the Savage 110s a look, Steyr scout if you want to get a little fancy/old school.

      Yes, and that’s kind of the point of this video as well. Many people have a hard time getting short barrel .300blk to group well with factory ammo. Another point is that an expensive rifle doesn’t always perform better. 👍🏼

    • @craigvincent2439
      @craigvincent2439 7 місяців тому

      Also, the 1in 5 twist barrel is going to be much more ammo-sensitive to perfectly or not-balanced bullets. To viewers who don't shoot subsonic a lot, it is much harder to shoot than supersonic. To shoot good groups with a 223 is easy (barrel time and flight time), whereas my integrally suppressed Ruger 77/44 is much more difficult to shoot. To create good ammo is much harder and to shoot it well I have to be on top of my game. Subsonic is very hold sensitive. My suspicion would be the 1in5" twist promotes expansion at the expense of accuracy especially if projectiles are not perfect monolithics. @@XRING

    the q bolties are beautiful guns but I'll never buy one because of those light primer strikes. Their CS is not top of the line to say the least

    I think 300 blackout is a pistol round, and should be held to Pistol accuracy standards.
    I have never seen one that shoots “Really Well”. It seems no matter the price the cartridge is a 3-4 moa catridge at best in most cases.
    For what it was designed for, that’s perfect…but it’s not a catridge to chase groups with…unless you like frustration.

      I agree completely especially for factory ammunition. 👍🏼 I know hand loading will produce better results but I don’t hand load .300blk.

    I don’t think this is a good review. Your comparing a 16” barrel to a 8” barrel. Of course one is gonna be a tiny bit more accurate.

      I think you are confusing accuracy for velocity.. Barrel length isn’t relevant when it comes to determining the mechanical accuracy of a firearm. In fact, all else being equal the shorter barrel will be slightly more accurate than the same gun with a longer barrel due to the shorter barrel being more rigid.

    I'd be interested in some chrono data. If velocities and deviations are close to the same between all of them I'd be very impressed. Other than that why would I be surprised that a 16" rifle did better than two 8" SBRs

    Accuracy and reliability kills the Qs. Really disappointing to see. Wouldn't be keeping one if that was the best they could do.

    I had no idea companies were still manufacturing extended over-the-barrel chamber suppressors.
    That might be the coolest thing in this video. Might be heavy, but it's going to be hard to find a quieter can.
    Edit: You can frequently find these Rugers for $440-450ish. Yeah, it comes with that aesthetically questionable stock and it has a nasty, crunchy, obviously cheap and unimpressive action. The trigger probably isn't great either. But, like you said, the rifle is dirt cheap. You can do just about anything you want to it and never feel guilty for it.
    I would probably never spend Q money on a gun like that. I think the idea there is to have something as light, short, fast and convenient as possible. The Q gives you a folding stock, a smooth, super short and fast action, a short barrel and a really light overall package. Just the sort of thing you might want if you were planning on doing a lot of walking while carrying it. On the other hand, that accuracy, or lack thereof, definitely isn't impressing anybody.

    While the Ruger was very impressive, and looks to be an extremely good value, it should not be understated that the Q has half of the barrel length. This will have a significant impact on accuracy as well as sound level. Those two things are unavoidable sacrifices in favor of size and weight savings.

    Ruger won but it seems the q is very ammo picky so I guess if you have the money to throw around its your money go for it but it's interesting to see a 500 dollar rifle compete with a 4000 dollar rifle
