Perfect delivery and introduction of this new cartridge. Theirs a reason your reviews are always top recommended. 👍👍 I believe all points where hit here
I suggest you checkout the history of JD Jones and SSK Industries, now SSK Firearms. He developed an entire line of Whisper cartridges decades ago long before the .300 Blackout ever became into existence. Actually, the Blackout is based on his original design of the .300 Whisper I believe it was called. He Hs a .510 Whisper with a 725gr Controlled Fracturing Subsonic bullet and a .50 Alaskan with the same bullet.
I've followed the development of this cartridge. It's the real deal and won't be a flash in the pan. The applications this caliber fills are many. It's a very effective hunting round for any mid to large sized game. The BC of this round is something stupid like a .85. Even though it's slow and dropping fast, it looses very little energy over a 300yrd range. The energy transfer is two fold. The normal energy developed by velocity and weight, but the other energy source that we don't generally look at is the rotational energy. With a 1-3 twist rate, this round has tremendous rotational energy that really does a number on targets consistent with game animals. To see the effects of the rotational energy, Faxon has a fantastic video comparing the cartridge fired out of two different barrels with much different twist rates on a ballistics gel block. You will have no problem seeing the effects of the 1-3 twist rate. This is a winner!!
Bryan you couldn't have said it better. This is a different animal all together and I don't think that we can make normal comparisons to this cartridge. This will drive a new branch in cartridge/firearm development. Kevin over at Q said they are developing a small frame rifle based off the POF Revolution DI. It's going to be off the rails.
yea the part that will hold adoption back is the spin/need for solid bullets = $ (or may just help drive a larger market adoption of mono bullets; who knows). Cool nonetheless!
Ok, but why would you want to do that? Or more particular, why would you opt for this over any number of other more traditional hunting rounds? Subsonic hunting is already a pretty small niche, now you're talking about long distance subsonic hunting. Why would you want to take a 300-yard shot with a subsonic round? Not only is the drop massive, but the flight time is over one second. That's a lot of time for the animal to move or the wind to change.
@@JaronActual This cartridge is effective enough at taking large game so the way down to small game and should help sub Sonic hunting increase in popularity. There is so much more to this cartridge than just hunting. You will see Special forces adopt this round in a big way and will see it used in multiple police department SWAT teams. That's a few that have been mentioned. Many more applications will find it suitable.
@@bryanduchane2371 I didn't say no one hunts with subsonics, I said it's a very small percentage. And even if it's increasing, it's still incredibly small. And why should any agencies adopt it? To do that, weapons in 8.6 have to either fill needful gaps no current platforms can cover, or be able to replace the capabilities of multiple current weapons without any significant downsides. Adding it to an armorer's inventory complicates supply logistics. 8.6 BLK is bigger, heavier ammo that requires the bigger, heavier AR-10 platform, so it's already at a disadvantage compared to normal carbines and SMGs. The extra power of 8.6 over intermediate cartridges ( 5.56, 300 BLK, 6.8, etc ) is meaningless at close ranges. At longer ranges, it has no significant advantage over .308, 6.5 CM, and a host of other full-size cartridges. So why would SWAT, HRT, or any other LEO tactical squad adopt it? Military use faces all the negatives mentioned above, but on a bigger scale. In niche cases, like covert small team deployments where team members want a single platform with both close-range subsonic and longer range capabilities, it might be useful. But that's still a big tradeoff considering you'd greatly reduce the number of rounds you could carry. And if you don't want or need capabilities past 300 yards, 300 BLK would serve almost as well, but give you much more ammo. And that's far from a "big way adoption" like you seem to be thinking.
Excellent presentations, descriptions, and demonstrations! Thanks! I'll be converting my .308 pistols with 12.5" barrels to 8.6 BLK with Faxon 12" barrels. To convert my Diamondback .308 pistols with 13.5" barrels to 8.6 BLK with Faxon 12" barrels, I'll cut off of some of the handguards, in order to mount a suppressor.
Wow what an amazing cartridge. Lots of energy. Thanks Ray for the review and glad your channel is growing. Can’t wait for you to hit 100K. Have a good weekend sir.
very cool. Never seen this channel… came up in my feed probably because I had been googling the 8.6 and, you know, with the cookies and the algorithms sharing and transferring search data back and forth all the time… yah. But MOST OF ALL!!!! Where is this badass gun range? Like, the coolest gun range ever maybe😅? Well, to me anyway. I live in flat coastal country and we don’t got no cool gun ranges like that!!! So cool.
thanks! haha I knew it had to be a bit more southerly US because of your accent, which I also like very much! Thanks again for the cool range and the great information on the new cartridge.
Very interesting. I’ve been hearing about this for some time so it’s nice to see it in action. That transfer of energy is nothing to scoff at. Good video 🤙🏽
When I heard about this, I believe at shotshow, I was like a 1 in 3 twist? First thing that came to mind was it skipping right over the lands because it's so fast of a twist.
Great video and seems like a fair and straightforward review. I was just hoping to learn a little about this new cartridge and you definitely did that for me
I just want the Russki 12.7x55mm guns. . The VKS, ShAK-12, and RSh-12. . . Interesting cartridge and firearms. The revolver reminds me of the Chiappa Rhino.
Just got all the parts to build my AR-10 based 8.6 Blackout Pistol with a 12" Faxon GUNNER Barrel. Now if I can buy ammo without selling body parts, I'll be able to shoot it once it's complete ! Great video, NEW SUBSCRIBER !
With these two rounds coming in to common use in the future for hunting, all we need now is for suppressors to be removed from the NFA, or just get rid of the NFA in its entirety.
That is so awesome! One of my favorite things about the firearms industry, is that it is always changing and there is always new ideas and innovative products coming out. It sparks this crazy feeling between a hobby, and an absolute obsession...depending on what type of wife you have😂
The energy imparted by the mass will lead to some serious deformation of the armor but I'd be surprised if either penetrated a level III or better. Not saying it won't knock the target out of the fight, but there's a reason we use the 5.56, the commie's went to 5.45, etc...
@@nated3310 older 9x39 can defeat 3a and the newer cartridges can defeat level iii, but nearly impossible to get here in this country…a 5.56 is not a good comparison because these bullets are designed for low signature environments which the 5.56 definitely does not do
Very cool cartridge, I think that it will have greater implications for hunters than it will for combatants simply because the platform and ammunition are significantly larger and heavier than 300blk and what its used for.
Interesting cartridge but I have sub loads for my 338 federal. 308 case 338 bullet works great. Now accuracy isn’t great about 2.5-3 moa at 100 yards because of the twist rate but all in all I’m happy with it. Great cartridge just never took off.
The energy difference is easy. If both rounds are at the same subsonic speed, the relative energy will be 1.5 times the 300 blackout. So, 300 gr ÷ 200 gr bullet mass.
Subsonic .30 caliber bullet vs subsonic .338 caliber bullet. The 338 Whisper was already a thing in the 90s, and Q has just picked a larger parent case (used to be 221 Fireball and another) to increase case capacity so they could get some supersonic louds out of it. The obsession over "energy" really means very little with a subsonic projectile, because it is still a pistol round from the point of terminal performance. Additionally from what's out there on the supersonic loadings, they're going pretty slow. The selling point seems to be the subsonic loads, which folks will soon realize .338" projectiles are a lot more expensive than .30" cal ones for the same purpose. But I suppose when everyone is realizing Q cans suck, and Q guns aren't great either, spin the same wheel of "innovation" that let you ride 300 Blackout (formerly 300 Whisper) and hope to get an upswing again.
Solid review of the 8.6 blackout and another excellent Desert Precision build. Just like the 300 BO though where I live, Illinois. Can not own a can. So it does not make sense to me to have one.
Awesome review I've been interested in this sins I started hearing roomers long ago. This would be an owsome set up topped with a thermal for pigs. There not walking away from that.
Great video, Ray. Love your range and your 8.6 Blackout rig. So much so, can you please share the specifics of your build from Kenny @ Desert Precision Gunworks? You covered it verbally in the video but I'd like to use an actual specs list or writeup as the starting point for my own build with them, so if you're willing to share that would be awesome. Thanks.
It never hurts to bring new things to the market. Like the 300blk it seems to be made for suppressors. Not many people have or can justify buying a 338 cal suppressor because they are not cheap. However a 9mm can would probably work pretty well assuming it can handle it. These are subsonic rounds so I doubt they're super high pressure. With that twist rate I bet you could get some nasty wound channels with some really aggressive expanding bullets.
I dug around for a long time to finally get myself a Savage AR-10 in 338 Federal because I love the cartridge and believed it never got the respect it deserved. Isn't this more or less just a rebirth of that cartridge???
Like all Accuracy International magazines I have used. They all need some feed lip adjustment (bending) to operate in your platform. Once the feed lips are corrected I will take an A.I. magazine over the others everytime. Master Piece Arms make a cool little tool to manipulate the steel lip magazines. I have just used this tool on a 22 nosler build in an AR plateform.
Great vid as always. Curious to see how well Gorilla Ammunition’s new rifles run, hopefully you can get your hands on one to do a review. They have the 8.6 in various barrel length bolt actions and some gas guns.
Very cool video, thanks XRING!.......could you explain why pushing on the front of the magazine may induce a feeding issue in a bolt action? I have zero experience with bolt action firearms. ....I know weird huh?? But I just was never that interested in them. I always figured in modern times unless I was super long range shooting or competition shooting there was really no need with how accurate you can make a modern semi auto. I am just a average Joe, so I don't need pin point accuracy.
I’m a big fan of new cartridges and I don’t get it when people complain about that. Like Ray said innovation is what drives the industry forward. That’s how all technology works. Even if a new cartridge is a flash in the pan and doesn’t end up amounting to much it’s a small step in a long line of technological progress that’s been moving forward since the Chinese invented gunpowder.
When firing suppressed, the non-reciprocating action forces more of the gasses through the suppressor making it that little bit quieter. Also prevents the gas blowback into your face that's a problem with semi and full auto guns with a suppressor
They really should call it the 8.6 creedmoor since its based on that case and cant fit in the AR 15. The .338 whisper is based on the same case as .300 blackout, fits in the AR-15 and has perfect subsonic performance with bullets up to 300gr. Btw, it was invented in 1990 by J.D. Jones, same guy that made the .300 whisper from .221 fireball brass, which would become the .300blk.
Negative Nancy's lol. Yeah they did the same thing with 300 Blackout...now it's one of the more popular AR setups even with the additional cost for ammo. Speaking of which Faxon has now added 1 - 5 twist 300 blackout barrels. Curious to see how they effects the energy delivery on that round.
not trying to be funny but for the hunter this round offers kinetic energy at low subsonic velocity. This has good applications but after this then what is the winz?
Just learning about the .300 Blackout for my first build. Now the 8.6 blackout. (Mind blown) This build will actually cater to my wife. So likely stick to the .300 She is interested in shooting and the .300 will make the experience enjoyable with less recoil and quietness. Will not be using a can. But the 8.6 has me drooling.
Perfect delivery and introduction of this new cartridge. Theirs a reason your reviews are always top recommended. 👍👍 I believe all points where hit here
Well I see where the kauger action ended up 😂 they are great actions and great people
I just finished building my 8.6 blackout 12" AR-10 and I I'm loving the caliber. I'll be using mine for an elk hunt this November can't wait.
That sounds excellent, Sir. Is the 12" barrel 1 in 3 twist also? I wonder if the muzzle velocity is lower. 850 f/s? 👍🇺🇸
Good luck with the 5 mile track job.
@@Nick-sx6jmyea because a .338 bullet is so small, I guess that’s why there’s video of 8.6 subs dropping Cape buffalo

Nice! I’m wondering why you went with a bolt gun option vs semi auto! Awesome build and great tips to look out for!
When firing suppressed, the non-reciprocating action forces more of the gasses through the suppressor making it that little bit quieter. Also prevents the gas blowback into your face that's a problem with semi and full auto guns with a suppressor
Why are you doing this to me? Now I have to get a new caliber. All kidding aside that was awesome! It’s like 300 blk out big brother.

Would like to see a comparison between this and a subsonic .458 SOCOM.
Ray, you should develop your own wildcat round. Call it the XRingBlackout.
