Although the stolen camera have been in the canal for approx over 10 years i was amazed to see a bit of footage and audio from the old water damaged camera tape.
Most of my magnet fishing best finds are found in canals around the uk and manchester is a magnet fishing hotspot.
I had to wash the tape in distiled water and let it dry, once it was dry i removed the broken tape and used celotape to fix the two parts of the snapped vcr tape.

I bought a vcr player and some spare tapes and decided to take a tape apart so i could use a clean cassette body for my film footage.
i put it all back together and then used a drill and bolt to rewind the tape fast which allowed me to use a cloth to try clean the tape at the same time.
The footage from the stolen camera isnt the best quality but the audio is ok and it seems to be footage of a jewish ceromony.

After a little research -
The first bit with audio is a chasidic wedding where a relative is paying tribute to the newly weds in Yiddish.
The second is a Barmitzvah boy on the Bimah reciting his parsha ( Torah portion) in Hebrew.

You can't repair tapes in normal light guys it will completely ruin it. As seen.
There is usually an option on these vcrs to clean up the picture

i will try clean the tape better in the future but its hard as there isnt a cleaner for tape only the vcr player

Believe it or not , TAPE is the best way to store music & vids !
I still use tape today , I use VHS for recording my DJ mixing & get 4 hours of it !
They used it for mastering back in the REAL days .

I would have cleaned the head on the video as possible building up of residue from the other side of the tape.just a thought though.thanks for the suspense!!

Hi Gareth the main video drum probably could do with a clean I recommend a piece of paper folded up and some isopropyl alcohol ant that way you might get a better picture

Wow. Thought you were daft even trying but really good result. Orthodox Jews, don't know much else. Someone said the fast forward then rewind, it did used to sort of work on our old tape cassettes, back in the day of course but yes I can remember that far back.

I reckon this is a video of the ceremony called bat mitfah when a child turns 13 years old. This basically welcomes them to having a responsibility and they take any punishment for their own wrong doing whereas before the parents would take the punishment for it. This is often very special to families with a massive turnout possibly all the family going I have attended one myself so I know what is like this is probably one of an Israeli family. Hope this is useful

Its a super VHS tape, did you use a super VHS machine to play it back?

SVHS was the better quality version of VHS. If you try to play SVHS on a standard VHS it looks very distorted. You'd probably find it's nowhere near as bad as it looks if you could play it on a SVHS tape player.
im thinking you may have contaminated the video heads . try gently holding a piece of writing pad paper with a bit of sprit against the heads as they spin
This sounds like a Bar-mitzva If you went to a synagogue. and talk to a Rabbi and played it to him he would be able to tell you what's going on.

You will need a video head cleaning cassette now Gareth. You must have seen a CD/DVD cleaning disc, well the video cassette player has the same sort of thing that works the same way. Wet and Dry VHS Video Head Cleaning Kit with fluid, eBay £3.89 Free P+P. (Never put a dirty tape in the player. It's a bugger to clean) :-)
Its the video cassette thats contaminated, the tape cleaners only clean the vcr head
@@drasticg Correct Gareth. But, the heads must need cleaning after putting a contaminated tape in the machine. Try playing another tape in it and see if you have good sound and vision. I am not trying to tell you what to do, i'm no expert. It's just suggestions from me, (an old git, trying to help).

Betamax was by far the better format, but there was something about the letters VHS that stuck more with people.
Thought it might of been an old snuff tape lol.

Was the video player in good condition Gareth ? If not you should give the heads a wee quick clean again with alcohol and cotton buds ,if your getting talking etc etc then there’s a good chance you will recover the footage.! I defo think the heads need cleaned because I remember back in the day having to clean them when the tapes we were going to watch had the same picture as what your getting.

I don`t know if that was an actual movie with a nefarious plot or some real footage of something the thieves did not want to have discovered. In any case, I would turn it in to your local police and see if they are interested. :)

Camera was on display in a shop.
Camera was stolen from shop. Taping a party and possible union, you would surely use a brand new tape. Would be nice to hear a translation of what was said. If you can identify a name on the recording then it may be possible to work out when this took place. Guessing it was fairly local so maybe look for places of jewish worship or where ceremonies take place in the area. maybe it wasnt stolen but those new fangled camcorders are so hard to use that he/she couldnt find the rewind button lol.
Or chalk this up to 'yeah you can recover tape that has been in a canal for 15 years' and then bin it.

How close did this get to your magnet?
Is it possible the magnet distorted the vhs tape? , am sure magnets can erases The tape
no idea, my magnet may have come close but i puled it out with a grapple hook

I am not sure if I would have done all the work you did just to view what was on the tape.
