@@Zanpaa You need to ask yourself if it's really worth a lot of money because CRT cataracts in such a large tube can't be cured (I'm sure it would implode). As Indiana Jones put it, this belongs in a museum. I wouldn't say it's worth anything monetarily. It's just awesome to preserve it as a piece of CRT history.
I’m not exaggerating at all when I say that this is the coolest video I’ve seen in a really long time. The history, the storytelling, the the salvation of a white whale, holy grail piece of anachronistic technology, all the way down to christening its arrival on US soil with a game of Melee. Simply beautiful.
I cannot believe the luck that y'all in the crt hobbyist community were looking for this at the exact same time just before the crt would have been junked. Amazing.
How the restaurant owner obtained that TV is pretty awesome. "No TV is good enough for customer demands. Oh Sony just brought out a 43" 400lb+ monster that fits our needs perfectly? Great, get me one of those. Get the fancy one too, nothing is sacrosanct for our customers." "Also put it on the second floor."
ABEBE IS A SERIOUS HERO, FOR BEING SO PATIENT WITH THIS WHOLE PROJECT! Shank, you are one *_LUCKY GUY,_* to have this work out, to any degree! I mean, WOW! I've never seen one of those things, after my Dad's business got rid of their 32" CRT! Congratulations, on getting this endeavor finished! Completely historical, seeing this thing, intact!
I'm an ex TV Engineer, I was an apprentice in the mid to late 70's I would have been gobsmacked to see this TV of the future. This story is epic, never thought I'd be moved by a giant TV with it's wonderful epic, story...!
My grandfather had the TV repair shop in town. My background is EE/CE and I've been in electronics repair for almost 40 years. This video put a lump in my throat too. Amazing story, for an amazing piece of history.
UA-cam randomly recommended this video to me. Don't know you, don't view your content on the regular, not even into CRTs - but I hope this gets you some visibility with Sony and they can reach out to you proper about it. Old technology like this isn't just simply things, hardware - it's works of art. And it ought to be preserved for as long as possible.
"When playing a 4-player split screen game, every person has the equivalent of a 21-inch monitor." I know that 43 inches is a lot, and there had already been footage of people walking around this TV, but that's the bit that sold me on just how big it is. This is an amazing bit of kit and I'm so glad to see it preserved.
I had a 32" Viera and that was a beast, but a bargain only cost me £299 so LED panels were coming into the foray, so CRT's were being cleared. That same TV is worth a lot more now due to how rare it is along with Sony Trinitron models, also they weigh a ton, took 2 of us to get it out of my old house, in the end I gave it away.
Same for me. I had a 21" CRT for my PC back in the day, so I know how huge that felt at the time. But having that real estate in a 4-Player Split screen just feels wrong.
THAT REVEAL AT THE END WAS INSANE!! I wouldve never guessed Abebe was the director of that game! Thank you so much Shank for making each video with so much love, care, and attention, and making me love retro gaming and consoles so much everytime.
I think you know what you need to do now to pay Abebe back. A Let's Play and/or review of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon with all gameplay footage filmed on that TV.
The fact that all the stars aligned at the EXACT moment. From the owner properly needing to actually get rid of the CRT, to Abebe going out, and even knowing someone who could handle and ship it and even the friends and repair guys that knew how to fix the convergence and alignment issues like... Luck was even more on your side than you could ever imagine...
TBH, the secret behind all of this MONEY. Money makes the world go round. Even if most of these people didn't exactly ask to be paid, they had to "compensated" for sure. I guess being a YT channel with over 400K granys you a certain level of money fluidity.
I cannot explain why this video made me feel so happy. I’m not even a CRT enthusiast, but seeing you going through all these obstacles to get this big boy across the ocean and put it to you use 30 years after its release warmed my heart. The interview with the previous owner was also a very nice addition, it’s so great that he liked your endeavor and wanted to preserve this rare piece of old tech! I’ll keep this video saved in my feel good playlist :) Thanks for sharing this incredible adventure with us!
4 in the morning, about to go to sleep, saw the notif pop for a Shank upload… sleep was postponed This video was honestly amazing, so much work involved, excellent job to everyone involved! Also, as an up and coming game developer, Abebe is a hero and amazing for managing to pull off everything he did while finishing up his game. What a legend

Bro what kind of main character is this TV? So many strange and wonderful coincidences. The one person in osaka thats willing to help just so happened to know someone from an international shipping company. Then you have the last minute acquisition before its demise. Then you have the service manual only an hour away from you. Thats not to mention the fact that you were in the position to afford the whole thing anyways. Its super cool to see this saved, and very interesting how it happened.
I wish UA-cam still had a favorites button!! This kind of odd, unnecessary history from the 80s-90s give me life as a 19-year-old who never got to experience the tech boom!! This is so, so fascinating to me. Thank you for doing what you have done for the gaming/display/tech history community at large! Will be patiently waiting for your next upload, Jeremiah

Adrian's Digital Basement recently made a video involving a heavily cataract'ed CRT where it seemed like the glue may have actually liquefied, leaked out and corroded components below the CRT. Perhaps you should keep an eye on that!
I have to say... If there is any sort of television Museum out there in the states, contact them. this is a big find. You don't have to donate it, but let them take some pictures, this thing was nearly lost media, it's good to get it spread out more again
it's sad to see that special interest museums are pretty fragile. like paul allen's living computer museum. many industry legends donated their private collections to them thinking it'll have a lasting legacy and it lasted barely a decade. hopefully they're big and well known enough for the stuff to keep safe but with smaller museums who knows where their stuff gets liquidated to once the money runs out (if not the dumpster).
This is a historic moment for the CRT collecting community. Thank you so much for your efforts, time, and money invested into this Shank. It's beautiful
While I did believe in RLM's claim that no one challenged Lucas during the prequels for years, I recently learned that may not be true as another UA-camr provided evidence from documentaries & development books to the contrary. But yeah, this CRT video is amazing. I thought it was impossible (& probably still is) to get this one, so I settle with a 36".
I like how you would assume only someone who's either so rich and so in need of big larp AV-equipment would buy this brand new, like a TV station, some very specific museum or whatnot, but it's actually just some soba shop who's just looking for a big enough CRT to fit in their reception area. They must sell one heck of a soba noodle.
I worked for a large company that had Sony monitor/TVs in all the conference rooms... before projectors became popular. Our manager told us that they had purchased the *largest* monitors made by Sony, more as a 'flex' for customer meetings. When they finally upgraded to projectors, they decided to offer the monitors to the employees. I got one, and it was HUGE but, it was the Sony 40" model.
I never realized there was a CRT this big. Back in the 80s & 90s if you wanted a very large TV you just bought a internal projector TV. My dad owned two and his oldest got handed down to me in the early 2000s (55 inch)and I had it until 2010 when I bought my first 42 inch LCD for 1200 dollars. But the story of this giant CRT being saved is amazing.
It’s so cool that your Parents encourage you maybe they don’t understand it but they know you like it And they even helped you I remember I found a old mini CRT Tv a bit under 60 CM cube that used black and white And they mentioned it was a dumb idea and they forced me to tree it away I was able to found a different one some time later
A very large round of applause to you. As someone who has collected CRTs for a number of years, this is the best "winning" story I have ever seen. You definitely deserve it coordinating all of that hard work. I've documented many of CRTs and I never thought this one was real. Thank you!
Everyone involved in this great preservation is a hero. But Abebe is not just a hero, he is "The Man, the Myth, the Legend". The shop owner is good at story telling and I appreciate him for telling us the origin of that TV. Then president of Sony being involved in the repair is an incredible PR story. Such a pity Sony didn't allow the interview to happen, we've got to hear the stories from the engineers!

Bayonetta Origins is an underrated masterpiece! Genuinely my favourite Bayonetta game, it is such a love letter to the series. Abebe Tinari is a legend and Bayonetta Origins deserve more people to play it.
The stars have aligned and you have been gifted care of this legendary item! I dont think it could have gone to anyone better. Thanks to you and the amazing peoople who helped you this legendary crt is now documented and preserved online for those of us who will likely never see such a grand crt in person.
I remember discussing this TV when I was active in the CRT discords a couple years back. I cant believe this, awesome job. So glad someone like your burner didn't actually get this lol
Wow.. its amazing that you found it. Im a technician and have worked on many Sony pro tv's from back then. usually the 24" or 27". nothing near this size. You have some De-Laminating going on with the CRT. LEAVE IT ALONE. Any attempt to fix this will result in disaster. try to keep it in a temperature controlled environment. I was working with a sony parts distributor back in time it was released, saw a brochure about it. I remember commenting that Sony will need to hire 3 Sumo wrestlers to move it in for you. So great to see the community come out to revive all the boards and such. IM not a retro gamer but I appreciate the craft. Would love to see in person some day. Looks great. Enjoy.
"Just knowing that it has gone to someone who wants to use it and take care of it, instead of just getting thrown in the trash, is enough for me." Was really full circle. Great TV but even better story!
You’re one of the channels out there who deserves your viewership base- and tens of millions more honestly. What an incredible journey you went on, and then took the effort to document it all in this video for others in so much succinct detail- whew. Makes me kinda mad when I think about how many utter slop channels out there have so many subs and do barely more than sit there and breathe on camera, while informative masterpieces like yours exist at the same time.
I have been watching for 5yrs and you inspired me to get into electronics repair, modding, and even small engine repair/mods. I love how far I have watched you go shank! Love your content and hope It doesn't go away. Thank you for inspiring 10yr old me 5yrs ago😎🤙
To quote Indiana Jones: "This should be in a museum!" ....but I concede an enthusiast's parent's garage is probably the only other comparably appropriate place for it to be.
As someone that has a Mitsubishi AM-4201R, it’s really cool to see a larger set has finally been confirmed. I’ve owned literally hundreds of CRTs and am a huge fan of both very small and very large sets. I’ve spent a lot of time looking for sets larger than the 4201. Great work on accomplishing this.
Fantatic video. Story telling was perfect! Abebe is a genuinely awesome person. And the previous owner of the TV is so kind to let it be taken with pleasure
Amazing set! I have a 36" JVC downstairs, which a friend helped me to bring down. I believe it weighs 196 lbs. Anyway, quite a chore. I told him that if/when it dies, I'm going to smash the tube and dismantle it before bringing it back up. :p
Abebe you are the REAL MVP... Shank, this video is AMAZING and something is telling me that is going to go super viral, congrats on having this real holy grail
I appreciate Shank's consistent non-clickbait titles, he could have put "I FOUND THE WORLDS LAREST CRT!!" or something like that but he didn't. One of the many things that makes Shank stand out in my opinion.
Shank, i respect you for basically being the definition of quality over quantity. Your vids are always entertaining and i have rewatched most of them a lot. Please continue what youre doing and dont let anybody tell you otherwise.
New Shank Mods, happy holidays all around! Abebe is definitely the hero of this story. He was not only able to go to the Soba restaurant to confirm the TV was still there, but also happened to know the right people to actually get the TV shipped out. All for a hyper niche piece of retro tech. I had no idea this thing even existed but it's really cool that it does. And that it still does thanks to your combined efforts.
Retro gaming is still king on crts but lately i been investing in component capable dvd and vcr players and watching old movies, cartoons and anime. My favorite dvd player is a sony component player from 2006. It has a usb drive that can play media off of it so i been watching dragon ball z and invader zim on my old tv in good quality.
This is genuinely one of the coolest videos I've watched. Ever. The inclusion of the history behind this specific TV and the tale it took to get it overseas, along with the loving efforts of kind strangers is genuinely inspiring stuff. A landmark video for the CRT community and wonderful example of passion for the preservation of our history. Congrats! Shoutout to Abebe!! 🤘
WoW ! Man , I I am not intrested in video games , and I have watched the WHOLE video , you are a gem man , the people who appreciate the innovation these days are so little , people don’t care anymore about creativity , and this video is a hope for those who can taste the amazing innovation in those devises
That reveal at the end off who Abebe is... that is a heck of a lot of coincidences! Holy cow! Super happy that the stars have all aligned to make this recovery possible!
> Old sony "It's wrong the flagship of our CRT legacy is sat doing nothing, we shall fix it ourselves." >New Sony "No, you can not share irrelevant to us information for the sake of archive and genuine enjoyment, our legacy is not to be respected; for we don't respect it ourselves."
Exactly. They like every other corporation actually gave a crap 30 to 40 years ago, but nowadays they don't. I don't blame the corporate executive for not doing the personal end of your behind Sony's back, he just notified them like he was supposed to and behaved like they expected him to. I swear Sony of the '90s would be all too happy to give out everything they have on the TV for archival purposes, granted if the patents were already expired.
This has to be one if the best videos I have ever seen on UA-cam! It has everything - mystery, intrigue, adventure, tension, logistics and international shipping. Consider me a new subscriber. xxx

Dude this was so interesting to watch, i usually dont watch such long form content but with this video I was so drawn in I couldn't even tell where the time went and your style of speaking and editing gives a very cozy feeling, loved it
Dude, a one of a kind tv is so cool! I got randomly recommend this video and was hooked. Happy it arrived safe and sound! I hope this video blows up so you can get that interview!
Thank you algorithm, very cool :)
Bayonetta Origins is an underrated masterpiece! Genuinely my favourite Bayonetta game, it is such a love letter to the series. Abebe Tinari is a legend and Bayonetta Origins deserve more people to play it.
If I had a nickel for every time some mythological item is found in Japan after being considered lost for many years I would have about 5 nickels now.
The stars have aligned and you have been gifted care of this legendary item! I dont think it could have gone to anyone better. Thanks to you and the amazing peoople who helped you this legendary crt is now documented and preserved online for those of us who will likely never see such a grand crt in person.
the interview with the original owner, brough me some joy
great video
Never thought i'd be this INVESTED in a hunt for a mythical tv.
You’re just the kind of madman the tech collection and preservation community needs. this is genuinely amazing
Thank you for saving this TV! People like you and the team that helped you will be the hidden heros behind preserved history as the decades pass.
Devastated by the fact it has CRT cataracts. Not gonna lie, with my OCD, it would drive me crazy.
Abebe is the real MVP. What a story! Thank you both for going to great lengths to preserve this truly unique bit of history!
You know is a massive unit when in the precautions instructions is written "make sure the floor is strong enough"
What an incredible story. Some may say it belongs in a museum, but we all know it’s in the best possible hands with Shank.
Man is uploading possibly the best YT vid of 2024 with 10 days left on the year
You’re one of the channels out there who deserves your viewership base- and tens of millions more honestly.
Abebe and the restaurant owner are real legends.
Born to early to see dinosaurs born too late to see outer space but born just at the right time to see the world's largest CRT ever
Well, Toshiba made a larger tube, to be factual here. But it is the largest Trinitron, for sure.
I know nothing about CRTs but what an incredible video! So glad you’ve preserved this history! And what an incredible roller coaster!
You had me laugh out loud at "the Loch Ness monitor", good one! :D
I have been watching for 5yrs and you inspired me to get into electronics repair, modding, and even small engine repair/mods. I love how far I have watched you go shank! Love your content and hope It doesn't go away. Thank you for inspiring 10yr old me 5yrs ago😎🤙
ITS BEEN 3000 YEARS!
To quote Indiana Jones: "This should be in a museum!" ....but I concede an enthusiast's parent's garage is probably the only other comparably appropriate place for it to be.
Maybe you can track down the extremely rare SED and FED prototypes
Man I would absolutely LOVE to
That trolling was top notch, 10/10.
Buying the game too. Abebe is the MVP.
He’s back!!!
Glad to hear that. Would love to see pics of some of the cool stuff you have in your collection. Shoot me an email or DM on my social media :)
🎵 Guess who's back
Guess who's back
Guess who's back
Shank is back (nanana)🎵
This Made my day
@@DerKlemm-Crafter that comment made my day :)
Tell A Friend
The trolling at the end was so good! Also, it's probably the best segway to a sponsor I've seen.
Ngl this is probably your best video ever, enjoyed from the start up until the end
Fantatic video. Story telling was perfect! Abebe is a genuinely awesome person. And the previous owner of the TV is so kind to let it be taken with pleasure
This is absolutely beautiful. Especially the bit at the end (congrats Tyler)
someone skipped straight to the spoilers :p
@ShankMods 🙂
Amazing set! I have a 36" JVC downstairs, which a friend helped me to bring down. I believe it weighs 196 lbs. Anyway, quite a chore. I told him that if/when it dies, I'm going to smash the tube and dismantle it before bringing it back up. :p
Sweet youtube algorithm thank you for you have blessed me this day by recommending this awesome video to me!
Sweet youtube algorithm thank you for you have blessed me this day with this view on my video
Abebe you are the REAL MVP... Shank, this video is AMAZING and something is telling me that is going to go super viral, congrats on having this real holy grail
Ha, you got the "Join my Discord" guy!
After 17 years, I learned how the name UA-cam was created...
Nobody:
Shank out of nowhere: guess who's back, back again
I appreciate Shank's consistent non-clickbait titles, he could have put "I FOUND THE WORLDS LAREST CRT!!" or something like that but he didn't. One of the many things that makes Shank stand out in my opinion.
I can't believe I wasn't invited to that unboxing!
HMU next time you are on my side of town :)
Shank is the best shitposter ever, just trolled the entire crt fandom lmao
Wait he’s alive ……………HES ALIVE!
I hope to see that in a museum some day!
Bro was lucky to find abebe what a goat he is
WoW ! Man , I I am not intrested in video games , and I have watched the WHOLE video , you are a gem man , the people who appreciate the innovation these days are so little , people don’t care anymore about creativity , and this video is a hope for those who can taste the amazing innovation in those devises
I'm gonna remember this story forever, well done you trolled me too . For sure. 😂
Thank you. I hope the community will see it for the harmless fun I intended it to be :)
That reveal at the end off who Abebe is... that is a heck of a lot of coincidences! Holy cow!
Super happy that the stars have all aligned to make this recovery possible!
Just finding out the Facebook post was from shankmods 😂
Amazing job!!! I have never seen one in person and am now wondering how many people actually owned one of these
> Old sony
"It's wrong the flagship of our CRT legacy is sat doing nothing, we shall fix it ourselves."
>New Sony
"No, you can not share irrelevant to us information for the sake of archive and genuine enjoyment, our legacy is not to be respected; for we don't respect it ourselves."
Consider me a new subscriber. xxx
