Love the convo that is happening in the comments 🌸. Let's shine a light on something crucial: our society is obsessed with celebrities. Sure, it'd be awesome to rally for change in politics and other critical areas (and that happens too). But also, tackling the celeb obsession is a vital and necessary step toward seeing greater change. It's wild how much attention and energy celebrities get compared to real-world issues. Since attention equal money in this capitalistic society, we have to be intentional where that goes. Maybe then we'll finally start addressing the bigger challenges head-on. Its not about getting rid of celebrities, art, and entertainment as a whole. It's about humanizing celebrities, thereby lowering them from the pedestals they've been placed upon. Not saying take away all their money or anything extreme, but rather to reimagine what celebrity culture and being a celebrity looks like.

My family is on the brink of homelessness, yet my mother makes 85k a year. Just 10k less than a ticket to the Met Gala, that celebrities can pay for in a single day like it's nothing. We're constantly saving money because everything is so expensive, and we almost lost our apartment recently because my mother couldn't pay the rent on time. She paid two days late. We often go two or three weeks without buying groceries just to pay the bills, and it's horrible. Gen Z doesn't like celebrities anymore because we're all suffering and are tired of how things are right now.

And blocking celebrities is going the change this? Shouldn’t this energy be put towards the people responsible for the rising costs of everything?I said this before and I say it again…cutting the strings of the puppet but not even knowing the names of the puppet masters is crazy.Celebs don’t pay for their Met tickets…most tables are purchased by the fashion houses who are no longer family owned but have been bought out by corporations but Bernard Arnault’s name is nowhere on the block list…neither are any of the studio heads who individually make more money than most small countries… or how about going after the foods companies…there are only about 12 who are responsible for %80 of the food you buy and the cost of it but PepsiCo and Unilever are nowhere on the block list. This energy is misplaced…I promise you that Zendaya is not responsible for the price of eggs going up.

Gen Z isnt going to “end” celebrity culture necessarily, they are just going to experience something adjacent to it. a time period where everyday people act as/get treated like celebrities because of how easy it is to have your own platform and become viral. when the girl in her living room doing GRWMs can get as much attention as a post from an actress, practically everybody is a celebrity. and when everybody is a celebrity, nobody is.

which is the 'as we know it' part of the title. Its due time society reimagines how we interact with celebrities and the culture around them. Gen Z does worship "celebrities". Gen Z worships social media celebrities. People are separating traditional celebrities from social media influencers who have a high level of celebrity. Some social media influencers are millionaires, because they gained celebrity from Gen Z, and they are no different than traditional celebrities. I can name a number of mediocre influencers who have become millionaires, because they stole someone else's content or went go in public doing ridiculously ignorant things. Most people in this country who aren’t young are doing their jobs, coming home and watching some tv, and taking care of their families. They don’t have the energy to care.

Missed the mark a bit. Gen Z is absolutely not above celebrity worship whatsoever. Charlie D’Amelio, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet, Ice Spice, Emma Chamberlain, Etc etc etc.
Gen Z is single-handedly the reason for most Tiktok users rise to stardom. And they’re being constantly marketed to with Amazon storefronts & sponsorships, which fuels the entire ecosystem and continues the toxic cycle.
As much as Gen z likes to think they’re progressive and “taking a stand” they sink into the same traps as everybody else, it’s just in a different font.

Honestly, the only reason why I feel like people are boycotting celebrities is because they’re incredibly poor and are having a tough time in society more than ever.
Realizing how much their favorite celebrities and influencers have much more than them is turning people into green eyed monsters. It reminds people of the time when people were saying “boycott, Coachella“… As if most of us had the means to go there! As if most of us have the means to purchase Balenciaga on the regular.
People are upset for a hot minute and then they get over it. Because if people were really over it and they were really ready to burn this thing to the ground then we’d have seen the change already. Look at how many people made sure they participated in the Taylor Swift Eras tour? You can’t say it was just parents buying it for their teenagers, because there were definitely grown folks paying with their “grown folks” money.
If the economy suddenly changed tomorrow, then people would be quiet and go back to their regularly scheduled programming. They didn’t ask to be put on Olympic tall pedestal, they didn’t ask to be worshiped, and they didn’t ask to be made holier than thou.
Lastly, let’s not, pretend that people haven’t been using their own little smidge of power to try and destroy people. It was only a matter of time before Zendaya went to the chopping block, Marie Antoinette style.

I would watch movies and TV shows, and listen to music and know nothing about the celebrities outside of that context. Yes, they did some press junkets about the movies and music about to be released, but that was it. Other than paparazzi tabloids, there wasn’t a bunch of stuff about celebrities personal lives like it is now and social media. People are not gonna stop consuming art. Unless you want a lot of people to be unhappy, people will continue to consume art. @@blackellegirl I think they mean people should start consuming more indie art/non-Hollywood-centered art, which is widely available online.
I need to talk about this so I'll detail the context to make my point:
People discovered in the early days of social media they could support literally anyone they personally liked. Early internet "celebrities" didn't want to be celebrities or associated with Hollywood at first, that took some years to change. Cable took a huge hit with the younger audiences. Gossip magazines were selling less and less for several reasons. We were obsessed with the idea of seeing "people like us". Hollywood was struggling with the youth for the 1st time, trying to win a game of catch up with internet culture that they lost for years before they pick themselves back together.
Yes, consumers do have more control than they think, and it's a great thing they're realizing it. But no, it won't be an easy shift, because it will have to be cultural, and it will have to be deeper than blocking celebrities.

I have a genunine question, please don't hate on me, if anyone reads this and wants to answer, please do it respectfully, I personally don't consider myself a celebrity "whorshipper", I always try to draw the line, I don't know these people, I don't know what they think, what they stand for, but is it bad to follow them solely for the product they give? For example, music, I've never really cared what the singers I follow are up to, like brand deals, dating, gossip and stuff like that, I only care when they release new music, of course if an artist explictly shows problematic behaviour, I withdraw support, but can't we take the power away on many other areas outside of their main product? I'm genuenly asking, of course entertainment and enjoyment is not more important than human lives, but I personally believe specially that music can be very important in a person's life, and maybe you just haven't clicked with other artists, while I don't listen to a lot of mainstream artists, I've heard people say that singers like Taylor Swift basically changed their lives, and while I don't understand how as her music is not my thing, I wouldn't wanna take away that from that person, don't make her the most powerful woman in the world because of that, but the product she made actually did some good, this is why I'm conflicted, yes, these celebrities live in a bubble, but I believe not all of them are bad people, some are scared or were badly advised to not speak up, can we pop their bubble without condemning them and can at least SOME of them reddeem themselves?
I'm so sorry for the very long text, this is an issue that conflicts me a little and I wanted to make it very clear this is a genuine doubt and not me trying to say all these rich celebrities are good people and we should just continue to support blindly, but again, is not at all more important than the human lives being lost everyday

The major issue is that we need to separate artists who are basically pressured to keep a public profile to sell their work (mainly because there’s no real money in the artistic fields except for the lawyers and finance bros who control the markets) and random people like the Kardashians who are celebrities simply for the sake of being famous.
Obviously, the idea of celebrity is inhumane in and of itself, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with being well known and respected for your work…. emphasis on the WORK part. No one needed to know about Nina Simone’s chaotic home life to love and respect her artistry. Joni Mitchell barely leaves her house cuz she’s too busy smoking and painting and minding her business. We just want the art. Whatever we glean about the artist’s personal life from the work is all that needs to be shared with the public. We need a new system where artists can get paid for their work so they don’t have to keep promoting themselves to stay afloat. Then the marketing of oneself becomes the job instead of art making.

Also, it's worth noting that before social media, it was the norm for celebrities to be stalked, harassed and assaulted by paparazzi who violated their privacy to profit off of the public's interest in their personal lives. The arrival of social media provided a direct line of communication between celebrities and the public, allowing them to better control how much of their personal lives they wish to share, if anything, and making it available for free which killed a lot of business for gossip rags and paparazzi. The public always had an unhealthy interest in celebrities' private lives, but at least now celebrities can benefit from it by promoting their work while also protecting their privacy to some degree and mitigating risks to their safety. But the public demand for the personal content we see from them is nothing new, it just changed medium. The voyeuristic aspect of celebrity worship has always been problematic.

I love this comment, because it is something that's bothered me for a long time. It feels like art in and of itself is no longer valued or appreciated anymore, which makes it nearly impossible to build any kind of creative career.
In the past, artists had "sponsors" and time to create their masterpieces - Michelangelo, for instance, stayed with a benefactor while working on a statue for him. Now, artists have to have another job just to stay alive, then still have enough mental energy left to create. But even the full-time jobs are barely enough to get by on these days. So, basically, artists just don't have the time or the energy to create anything anymore.
That's why we have such bad quality items, why everything is fast produced. The world values quantity more than quality these days, and because of it we are losing the chance to witness amazing creations by talented people. For all we know, our Michelangelo is currently working in McDonalds trying to get by, or studying something else because he knows art won't be able to sustain him financially.
The only way to get your work noticed is by promoting it, but that also takes time and energy.

As much as I believe in eating the rich, the Met Gala is not the thing to be mad about. Tickets are $75,000 because it's a fundraiser. The Met Gala *funds* the Metropolitan Museum. That's the entire reason the Met Gala exists. It's not just a flashy party for rich people. Without the Met Gala and all the celebrities paying $75,000 a seat, one of the most important museums in the US would very quickly be forced to close.

@@sugarcube5826 I'm not really understanding the comparison you're drawing here. Why is saying the Met Gala is a worthwhile event the equivalent of saying the deaths of others isn't important? I don't see the connection, beyond a very shaky "well but THAT money could have gone THERE" type of logic. Yes, human lives are more important than cultural preservation. Cultural preservation is also important. Two things can matter at the same time.
In this moment, and every moment, the lives of people are the most important thing. That's why we need museums. We need to be able to remember and connect with the lives of the people in the past. The lives lost today will be remembered most vividly by museum collections in the future. The Met's collection includes things from dozens of other wars across hundreds of years, all of which deserve to be remembered. If we threw out that history every time there was a war, the lives lost would be forgotten that much faster.
I personally think it's pretty resourceful that the Met wasn't getting funding from the government (which SHOULD be funding public arts and cultural works) so they decided to have rich people dress up in stupid outfits and pay for it.

My only thing about the block list is that it intends to force celebrities to disingenuously speak out on issues that they probably don’t even care to learn more about. A lot of them simply do NOT align or relate to our generation’s values and we all remember how much of a disaster it was when they were collectively vocal a few years ago.
