That is Jason Newsted the bassist before Robert.. Probably the best backing vocalist the band ever had, no disrespect to Robert but the charisma and stage presence Jason had was second to none. Your reactions remind me of myself from years ago lol had the same excitement and faces to match..

Jason Newstead was their bassist at the time and he was epic. He was a great bassist and a tremendous addition to their vocals. Also getting 1.6M people to scream "Die" as a backing vocal performance is absolutely insane. Also this was Biblical, so you are correct on that assumption.

They wrote Creeping Death after watching The 10 Commandments with Charleton Heston. Even if you are not Christian, it's a great movie and still holds up very well. The song is about the angel of death shown as a creeping mist that is sent to kill the first born child of the pharaoh. You can also watch The Prince of Egypt, it's an animated musical that covers the same story. With an absolutely amazing soundtrack.

Metallica was inspired for the song by the second half of the film The Ten Commandments, which is based on the Bible tale of the Plagues of Egypt. While watching the scene of the final plague killing every Egyptian first-born child, Cliff Burton remarked "Whoa - it's like creeping death", as the plague was represented by a fog rolling into the Pharaoh's palace. The band liked the sound of "creeping death" and decided to write a song about the plagues, with the phrase as its title.

James’ vocal power especially from like 88-91 was absolutely incredible. Unfortunately it wasn’t the most healthy for him since he wasn’t never trained which is why he blew out his vocal cords after the black album tour and had to get singing lessons and change how he sang to protect his voice after that. His voice has never quite been the same ever since. And now he’s just a lot older so he just doesn’t have the same range anymore even if he wanted to. But man what I’d give to hear him signing like that live again just one more time

@@Scanner_51 There you go, I didn’t even think of that. Rob has been in longer. He was a good bassist period. Nothing special, he was never, would never “carry” Metallica. That’s very funny to me. Them & GNR’s were the 2 top bands in the world. They could have switched out Jason at Any time & nobody would know the difference. Fact!!! I mean did Metallica pack up after Jason left? No, they kept playing kick ass albums. Selling out stadiums. Same w/Guns. Axl, Slash & duff you can’t replace. Everyone else? Doesn’t hurt them at all.
Metallica, James, Lars & Kurt are not replaceable. Anyone else is. Just facts. That list Cliff(which I remember the day he died) they went on. Got Jason, after he left, they went on. Now Rob they go on. As long as the core 3 are there, doesn’t matter. I can play 2 live versions 1 w/Jason & 1 w/Rob. Same song & I guarantee you can’t pick out who’s who. I mean it’s a 50/50 chance so you may get lucky. But you won’t hear a difference bro. Trust me.

Driven by pure passion! At that point Metallica (atleast Lars and James) had been a band for almost ten years. They were THE metal band and had been for quite a while even though they had only gotten actual radio play for the previous two years, since they made the video for "One" and then released the black album (enter sandman). Prior to that they didn't get radio play because most of their songs were 8+ minutes long, and they wouldn't shorten them. They were making a living playing live as the biggest band with no radio play so their live game was top notch. In middle school we had to order their shirts out of the back of magazines (4-6 weeks shipping), and hand drew their logo and album covers on the back of jean jackets. I was in high school back when this concert happened and they were on top of the world because they finally had that cross over success bringing in the big bucks.

The song "Creeping Death" is based on the Book of Exodus
There is an even more popular song you need to watch from that same concert: Harvester Of Sorrow.
