I met Nick Menza (the drummer) in a small bar in Tokyo when I was stationed there in 1996. I mentioned I saw them in 91 in Philly at the Clash of the Titans tour supporting this album. I offered to buy him a beer, and he bought a round for everyone (5 of us), but he didn't partake. Super nice dude, RIP Nick.
In the UK this album and Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss were released on the same day. One of those days I took a half a day off of work and rushed into own to grab them as they were unpacked. Happy times!
Yeah still some of the best thrash metal albums out there. I was in high school with fundie christian parents so I had to hide all my metal from my folks. Especially slayer lol.
The important thing to note with this song is this is the first track off Megadeth's 4th album Rust In Peace. The previous 3 albums the band, and Dave Mustaine in particular, were on literally EVERYTHING: Alcohol, Weed, LDS, Heroin, Meth, and even Crack Cocaine. They were just obliterated around the clock for years. This was the first time Megadeth made an album completely clean and sober and had a major line up change by swapping out previous members for the amazing Marty Friedman on guitar and the late, great Nick Menza on drums. But the press and some fans were like "Does Megadeth still have it? Or will they be another band who could only make great music while on drugs?" The first 10 seconds of this song made the statement that not only did they still have it, but they were just warming up and they haven't stopped since.
When Dave Mustaine was the lead guitarist of Metallica in 1982/ '83, he was really not interested in doing lead vocals... But when he was fired and formed Megadeth in late '83, he couldn't find a vocalist in L.A. to match the intensity of his music... so, he just took over on vocals. Mustaine's style took cues from shock rocker Alice Cooper ( who would later become his godfather) and vocalist Johnny Rotten of UK punk rockers The Sex Pistols... Unlike Metallica, which was a cross between Motorhead and Diamond Head... Megadeth was pristine and technical like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest...
Because they play in D standard now. One whole tone lower than E standard. Daves older and troubled vocal chords can actually stay in tune and not snap like you can see after his neck surgery in early 2010s
I would suggest something but I can't when they act like they have never heard something every UA-cam reactor has reacted to. Can't pull the wool over my eyes
Marty gets a lot of well deserved credit for his solos, but I really appreciate all of Dave's too. Especially the one towards the end of this track!! Incredible
First concert I ever went to was Testament and Megadeth opening for Judas Priest three days before my 18th birthday. Megadeth was touring for this album. It was awesome. Got to see them again in 2010 for the 20th anniversary tour of this album where they played it from start to finish. This is the first song on the album, and at the end of the show they did a reprise of the end of this song from Dave's (vocalist) solo through the end of the song. Hearing the whole album live was special too.
Sadly, he doesn’t see it that way. He released so many classic metal albums that would have never existed. It seems like he would give it all up to have stayed with Metallica.
His departure was excellent for both of them, as Metallica managed to maintain its style and success. And Dave, with the band being his, had greater freedom to show his talent.
Pretty much all of Megadeth's songs are bangers. I was born in '73 and grew up with this music as my soundtrack. Was not good for speeding tickets but I got by.

best line up ever! Dave, Dave, Marty and Nick...best ever!
Every hater out there goes right to Dave`s vocals. They pinch their noses and sing ( not even singing) flocked up. I love his vocals and I have a good reason to, because I worked for Dave & co. from 1984-1988. My buddy introduced me to him and we hit it off straight away. A crazy and fun time I wish I could turn the clock back at times !!
Megadeth is such a unique band, so many tempo changes and riff changes, they really are one of a kind, the lead singer/guitar player was Metallica's OG lead guitarist until a falling out, which honestly ended up giving us two amazing bands so I'm not even mad about it.
Very applicable to current affairs. Right before Dave gives us the first “Holy Wars” line, he says “Don’t look now to Israel, it might be your homeland.” That region has been the epicenter for holy wars for far too long. It’s not just between Arabic and Israeli groups, but it goes back and includes much older groups like the Byzantine empire and the Persian Sassanid Empire.
6:31 - Actually it was about the insurgency of the Irish Republican Army force that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland, facilitate Irish reunification, which had conflicts between the Catholics and Protestants. By the time the video came out, it was focused on the Operation Desert Storm, hence the Middle East imagery.
Rust In Peace is an all time classic album. Oh and that part you pointed out when the song transitions, that's when the song changes from Holy Wars to The Punishment Due. That's also footage of the band sky diving. When Dave first got sober in the early 90s he got into sky diving. The song High Speed Dirt from the album Countdown To Extinction is about it.🤘
Now that you get the song direction, look at the year it came out, what events took place. He is known for at times placing his view point in music. Other bands back then also tend to do this as well.
@@cycomiles4225 true but megadeth aint one of those things :D although Megadeth did take Alice in Chains on tour with em so not to say dave mustaine has no like for grunge
@@XoiZhiv Megadeth definitely was filthy in the 80s, all the drugs man....as I said, its not just a style of music. Eh, grunge is just another sound of rock, punk/punk rock tbh...don't really understand whats the big deal. One thing to consider when breaking this song down is its a two part song. Part 1 Holy Wars - is about religious conflicts in Northern Ireland and Isreal at the time (1990) and Part 2 ...The Punishment Due - pays homage to the comic book character The Punisher
I'm going to see Megadeth live in Nashville at the end of this month and I seriously hope they play this song. This was the one that got me hooked in the first place.
There is a rule around this song that shirts are banned. The song was so powerful that the band could not find shirts that did not get totally destroyed by the unholy riffage. If you listen to this song while wearing a shirt you have broken the biggest commandment of the church of Megadeth and his holiness Sir Dave of Mustaine.
I still have the "Rust in Peace" album on Vinyl. The same one I bought in either '89 or '90. And I still throw it on the Audio Technica often. It always hits the spot. I love these guys and still do. It's very nostalgic to me. It takes me back in my mind and I enjoy being lost in the great memories of growing up in that era. It's really cool to see that people still have appreciation for the music. Peace, love, and metal up-your-ass to everyone!
2 Songs in one really. Dave said that he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale and was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising activities for "The Cause" (i.e. the Provisional Irish Republican Army). "The Punishment Due" is based on the Marvel comic book character, the Punisher.
Brother will kill brother, spilling blood across the land, killing for religion, something I don't understand. That sentence stuck in my head since the 90s... and still spot on until today!
This is one of my favorite songs from Megadeth the song is killer from start to finish with the tempo and the change mid song the guitar work is amazing Dave Mustaine is one of the fastest guitar soloists of all time love his growl at the end also you definitely could apply this song to what is going on in the world today

So proud to be able to say I was there for the release of this masterpiece. So much music from those days has stood the test of time. It was a great time to be a teenager...Ticket prices to shows were still affordable and we weren't scared of being shot by some nut job with a chip on their shoulder....Yep...Gen X was the last generation to lay claim to a lot of things...
When Dave wrote the first part holy wars he was thinking about the conflict in Northern Ireland . One concert there he made a remark which was very close to a riot
Ok, let's go: I had already listened to this song several times and I understand that the theme behind it is a very heavy theme Rachael but honestly there is something you said in the middle of the react video that honestly people really don't respect and I already understood this a long time ago ''love your neighbor as yourself'' is actually a good value to follow but honestly today people have little or no respect for each other's beliefs, but the message of the song is very clear and I really like her riffs and Dave Mustaine's voice is a very good voice and so is the song itself, now talking about recommendations I recommend Laura Braingan - Self Control, it's a good song and I think you'll like it and what's more That's it, continue with the work you're doing and greetings from Brazil to you Rachael! 💚💛💚💛
"Love thy neighbour as yourself" comes from the old testament and here "neighbour" actually means kinsman so the origins of that saying is rooted in something just as tribalistic as holy wars. It meant that those of god's chosen people should not fight amongst themselves. Meanwhile other passages from the same text talks about chasing other people out of the holy land and how to treat slaves taken from them etc
Not to mention God instructing his people to cut babies from their mothers womb, and slaughtering every living creature. Not exactly the "peace and love" doctrine...
The lyrics deal with global religious conflict, particularly in Israel and Northern Ireland. In an interview with the UK magazine Guitarist, Dave Mustaine said that he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale and was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising activities for "The Cause" (i.e. the Provisional Irish Republican Army).Dave who was high on heroin at the time went on stage at the Antrim forum and dedicated a sing to the cause and shouted keep ireland for the Irish which caused a riot in the crowd because there were people from both sides of the conflict at it..Megadeth were then escorted out of Northern Ireland under a heavy British military convoy
Ecc 8:8Just as no human being has control over the wind to restrain it, so also no human being has control over the day of his death. Just as no one is discharged during war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
The most impressive thing in my opinion is how the hell he can play that and sing at the same time. It's a fairly complex riff, and while I can play it without problem, I could never sing while I'm doing it.
I can play and sing most of the song, the last few lines are hard when he says fill the cracks in. I'm not a good singer but it feels cool to play the riff and sing 😎👍🏻
Rust in Peace was Megadeth's first album done totally clean. Holy Wars was inspired by the war in the Occupied Six Counties in the North of Ireland. I've been a Megadeth for over 40 years and this was, by far, their best album. FREE IRELAND 🇮🇪✊🏼
@@perfectq7206 fyi: The story behind Megadeth's song "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" is that Dave Mustaine was inspired to write it while in Northern Ireland:
The first half of the song is about the never ending middle east conflicts. The second half is about the Punisher comic book. It's basically two different songs mashed together. But it works.
i love the band and their talents (i can play most of the guitar parts but have no idea how Mustaine plays while singing these intricate riffs). Nonetheless, people don't kill each other over religion, it is over land, wealth, and resources, and it is usually a powerful imperialist/empire seeking to extract resources (oil, uranium, diamonds) at low prices using coercion. "Religion" "Terror" "Democracy" may be used as a pretext, but the reality of modern statecraft. That being said, I highly recommend this album and respect the humanitarian analysis the youtuber gave on the myriad topics brought out by Mustaine's lyrics.
Dave Mustaine claimed he’s not a singer but no one fills the vocals void and his vocals just complement the music. Also To sing while playing the riffs he plays is so complicated not many can do that
In 1988, while Megadeth was touring Europe they played in Dublin Ireland. They didn't know about the war/conflict with UK and Ireland about religion. Hence, don't look now to Isreal. It might be your homeland. Holy wars happen everywhere
i love the message you’re spreading. and the lyrics of the song is very correct as well. if they found out youre part juu they bring you to israel and fuel their war agains the true native who have the real genetics to live there without skin cancer lol
Holy Wars was based upon the religious conflicts in Ireland that were happening around that time of the late 80s/early 90s. The Punishment Due... well it's based upon Marvel Comic's The Punisher.
Not religious conflicts in the slightest I'm Irish from Belfast, grew up during the troubles. Outsiders get confused because it's often referred to as Catholic Vs protestant but most people werent religious. Catholic represents the Irish who were oppressed under British rule and the troubles came about as a result of Irish attempts to gain equal rights and status and be allowed to keep Irish culture and tradition and language. Which we did thankfully through non violence (unlike Hamas) after years of ira ceasfire we signed the good Friday agreement and now today over 50% of the population considers themselves Irish and can be Irish citizens and practice our culture (and religion)
Two different songs merged into one. The second song starts when he sings "Wage the war on organized crime..." Which is about The Punisher from Marvel comics
I think most of us understand what you mean when you say something is “grungy”, but you have to keep in mind that Grunge is a whole ass genre of music. Saying that a part in a thrash metal song is “grungy” makes you sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about, and I know that isn’t the case.
This song is 34 years old, and still 100% accurate to what this world is now
it was accurate 3000 years ago too
That's because war and religion will always go hand in hand. Both are senseless.

Yet, all the imagery is from the Middle East.
@@perfectq7206 I realize all the footage is from the Middle East but do your research before you spout off like you know something.
@@perfectq7206 fyi:
The story behind Megadeth's song "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" is that Dave Mustaine was inspired to write it while in Northern Ireland:
@@donculotta1551 I said all the imagery is from the Middle East.
@@perfectq7206 and I said the song's origin is from the North of Ireland.
Btw, Dave (lead vocalist) used to be lead guitarist for Metallica
The first half of the song is about the never ending middle east conflicts. The second half is about the Punisher comic book. It's basically two different songs mashed together. But it works.
Well said about War
This song 10/10..
Perfect
"killing for religion, something I don't understand" = Oct 7
Yup.
Screaming god's name when you're massacring innocent people isn't gonna give you heaven
Lead Vocalist, Dave Mustaine is an original member of Metallica
Right at the end he actually says cowards no killings
i love the band and their talents (i can play most of the guitar parts but have no idea how Mustaine plays while singing these intricate riffs).
This is in regards to the first gulf war which was only a religious war in that it was carried out for the ambitions of Israel.
Listening to this makes me feel young. Also old lol
Dave Mustaine claimed he’s not a singer but no one fills the vocals void and his vocals just complement the music. Also To sing while playing the riffs he plays is so complicated not many can do that
this song is a masterpiece
In 1988, while Megadeth was touring Europe they played in Dublin Ireland. They didn't know about the war/conflict with UK and Ireland about religion. Hence, don't look now to Isreal. It might be your homeland. Holy wars happen everywhere
Bangin!
He said "Kill for religion"
Damn, you read that like 30 SECOND BEFORE.
i love the message you’re spreading. and the lyrics of the song is very correct as well. if they found out youre part juu they bring you to israel and fuel their war agains the true native who have the real genetics to live there without skin cancer lol
@@WookieWarriorz I appreciate the clarification
@@WookieWarriorz So it WAS Catholic vs Protestant. That is what you just wrote. England (protestant) Irish (Catholic) that's what it comes down too.
Non violence....sure buddy.
@@WookieWarriorz Non violence? Don't make me laugh lol
Two different songs merged into one. The second song starts when he sings "Wage the war on organized crime..." Which is about The Punisher from Marvel comics
Dave’s masterpiece 🤟🏻🤟🏻
I think most of us understand what you mean when you say something is “grungy”, but you have to keep in mind that Grunge is a whole ass genre of music. Saying that a part in a thrash metal song is “grungy” makes you sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about, and I know that isn’t the case.
