You should consider listening to "The God That Failed" by Metallica off of their self titled album "the Black Album". I love the concept of this song. It's a monster song written in the first person from the perspective of the monster. The monster is the angel of death in exodus. It's like 'The Thing that Should Not Be' but the monster is an angel.
According to James Hetfield, the inspiration for the song was the movie The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston. They were watching the scene where the first born die. Cliff Burton turned and went, "Whoa, Creeping Death"

Yes, it was written inspired by the move, but it actually evolved from a song Kirk Hammett wrote when he was with Exodus (before he was Metallica) that was never released. The song was reworked by Metallica
They are also used on stage when they performed this song back then the imaginary from the movie when death creeping through at houses in form of a green mist!!!
I am so happy you chose this song considering your calling. I'm ordained and found this song to be awesome for its use of a biblical story in metal. As a teen who was told metal was evil and of the devil, I would argue that this was proof that metal in and of itself couldn't be evil.
Keizer No,metal don’t has to by evil. There are many metal bands such as Dragonforce,Sonata Arctica,Blind Guardian,Korpiklaani and many many more, who has possitive and uplifting song.Whole power metal genre is known for uplifting anthem-like songs often with fantasy theme.
To be honest, if someone made a death metal concept album that went through the entire Old Testament, it would be absolutely insane. I'd buy it, even though I'm not religious.
The angel of death is the Destroyer mentioned in the song and in the bible. you know the Dude who killed all the first born but passed over the lamb's blood painted doors
WOW! I’m blown away right now! As a musician, (guitar player), I’ve played this song many times over the years. But, I was always so focused on my guitar parts & studying them to be fluent in my role of the song that, I never really took the time to expand my thoughts as to what the song actually meant! Thank you for presenting this song the way you have & explaining its meaning. I’ve played & heard this song hundreds of times yet, now I will hear it and appreciate it even more than I ever did before! I guess that’s one of the drawbacks of being a musician that has to constantly focus on the music. Sometimes the essence of the song can be lost while focusing on how to play it!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
For context the “Holy Wars” half of the song is about the Troubles in Northern Ireland and an incident that occurred when Megadeth were in Belfast touring their “So Far, So Good, So What” album.
My grandfather was a Baptist minister and I grew up learning about the ten plagues. To hear it told lyrically from the point of view of the angel that carried out God's orders is just amazing. Cliff Burton was such a HUGE part of the writing and creative process when he was alive and in Metallica. Hence why their sound changed immensely AFTER, And Justice For all, I read that Cliff had contributed far more than he was credited for on that record with "To live is to die" being the only song he was credited on. Easy to cut him out when he is passed away I guess. Cliff studied Classical guitar, think about all the melodic guitar harmonies on the first 3 records, that was Cliff all the way! He was a far better guitar player than Kirk or James, I mean the dude could solo on a bass the way guitarists do on a 6 string, CLIFF WAS A GENIUS AND THIS SONG WAS HIS MASTERPIECE! WE MISS YOU AND LOVE YOU CLIFF!
You should really look into the history of the band with Dave Mustain. Metallica was great until they ran out of his material. This is not to take away from Cliff, but to add perspective.
what an uninformed and disrespectful comment. "easy to cut him out when he is passed away" ?? have you ever heard them talk about Cliff since he died? they love him still and mention him in every single interview. especially james. Metallicas sound would've changed any way. Thrash Metal would not have succeeded in the 90s. and because they changed their style, you are still able to hear Master of Puppets being played in front of 80k people, multiple times per (normal) year, up to this day. for all Cliff contributed you should watch an interview on this site between Ian Scott and Kirk Hammett where they talk about the Puppets recording sessions and how Cliff wasn't very involved at all and in fact flew home early (Denmark to California) before the sessions were even over. (he only has 3 credits on the 8 songs, Puppets, Orion and Damage, Inc.) what a strange hill to call them out on.
I still listen to the album probably on average once a month. Stuck in the 80's and 90's lol. I was 5 when Ride the Lightning came out. I didn't really listen to Metallica until the Black Album came out as I was 12 then. But I bought the Black Album and then all their other albums in backwards order. Only to realize I did actually already have the tape Ride the Lightning for many years and just didn't listen to it.
Puppets was my first as well... it was 92 ( I was 7) and I told my aunt I wanted the black album because I heard Sandman and Sad but true.... She said no... lemme show you Real Metallica and bought me Master of Puppets.
I'm 15 and I didn't start out with a particular album but a song (one) and with our modern technology I listened to some of their greatest songs until I decided to listen to their first five albums in order so technically my first full album was KEA. I also went to my first Metallica concert (first concert generally as well) and it was the coolest thing ever, best experience I've had in a long time.

@@odiumsfist1 How come? I don't think there is anything wrong with having to use your talent to entertain. I personally, listen to songs by Metallica whenever I'm depressed and it has been an instant cure. I've watched so many reactions to this song & the live video of their epic historical performance in Moscow 1991...Loved the ones that had never heard the song before & their reactions. Even now in 2021!!!
Ok so what is the truth you are looking for and how is a pastor's take on a Metallica song going to lead you towards any kind of truth? Unless it's the truth about how badass these riffs are.
The "Ten Commandments" is based on the story of the exodus, out of the book of Exudos in the Old Testament. The story of the ten commandments and the law given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai emmedietly proceeded the Passover & the ten plagues.
the funny thing about this is that this comes from the passover (Exodus) and the "die by my hand" riff originally came from a band called "Exodus" that Kirk Hammet (he wrote that riff) was part of before joining Metallica.
This song is about the time anger towards God for their families belief that God will heal you and you don't need modern medicine. James mom died from cancer when he was 13.
@@nate5539 Sounds a LOT like "Judith" by A Perfect Circle. Maynard's mom went through something similar and her church gossiped about her and told her she shouldn't seek treatment. A great thing to do is first listen to Judith and hear Maynard's anger, then listen to Tool's "Wings for Marie" parts 1 and 2 to hear his journey through healing after losing his mother.
Ahhh alli the memories of when Metallica meant business and their material had content and oomph! 💘 Kill Em All, Puppets, and Lightning were/are/will always be their greatest albums imho. But I’m also one of the outliers on the internet who loves almost every Metallica song off of everyone record. St. Anger doesn’t count. Love Load, Reload, Death Magnetic and Hardwired. I’m a Metallica fan down to my bones for life.
That’s awesome that you listen to the music with an open mind. A lot of pastors, when they hear the first few licks, turn the music off and don’t even want anything to do with it. Thanks for the feedback. God Bless. I love this music. Red, August Burns Red, and wolves at the Gate are awesome bands as well.
To see a pastor headbanging to Metallica....Priceless. Serenity in Murder, New Faith, When the Stillness Comes. Stop with the cupcake Metallica lullabies and look at real brutal sh!t. At least they picked the best Metallica song, still soft compared to evil metal.
Never even crossed my mind to look at these lyrics from the "God is evil, he's killing the poor Egyptians" standpoint. Actually, it's the 1st time I've ever heard such a thing, even though I'm a long, long time fan! And I highly doubt Hetfield had that on his mind while he was writing it,also... I can't be 100% sure, but I think so and I like to think so! Cheers, guys!
This song was inspired by 1960s movie The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston. James Hetfield and Cliff Burton were watching it. When it got to the part of the first born dieing, Cliff said it's creeping death. And a legendary song was born.
This is an awesome song, and I remember the first time I actually listened to the lyrics. I was blown away! I mean, it was a Sunday school lesson, but in its most awesome form! In reality, though, one can't begin to imagine the terror the Egyptians must have felt knowing their first born were dying, and the first born of all around them, by some possibly unknown and unstoppable force. I know the movie The Ten Commandments like to show the angel of death as a sickly green cloud, but who really knows what form it may have taken, if any form at all. Truly terrifying, and an apt subject for metal. Keep up the great work, guys! Great reaction and review!
One thing that amazes me about this album is how young they were when they wrote it... early 20's and this was the product...always think of how many great songs were on the first 3 albums and they were all under 25...no wonder they became the world conquerers of metal

my first album way Metallica Master of puppets got when was. 10 I'm now 37 and jammin it
Justin Martin
Same. I’m 36, and first heard Metallica on Beavis & Butthead when I was 10.
Timeless album
Puppets was my first as well... it was 92 ( I was 7) and I told my aunt I wanted the black album because I heard Sandman and Sad but true....
She said no... lemme show you Real Metallica and bought me Master of Puppets.
Master o puppets is Def my Metallica album I got the albumin 94
I'm 15 and I didn't start out with a particular album but a song (one) and with our modern technology I listened to some of their greatest songs until I decided to listen to their first five albums in order so technically my first full album was KEA.
I also went to my first Metallica concert (first concert generally as well) and it was the coolest thing ever, best experience I've had in a long time.
So stoked to see that grin when you recognize Bible verses and references in the lyrics
From 5:47 to 6:30 y'all were supposed to screaming *D I E*
I know I did lol
Who says I didn't? Even did the swearing transition they do live, but I silently mouthed it out of respect. :D
As a 14 yr old metal head, my love for all metal comes from my father, but yet I managed to surpass in metal heaviness, which we both enjoy listening to slipknot, korn, megadeth, metallica, pantera, slayer, mudvayne, etc.
If u havent heard it yet a must for metal reaction is ...
Song is Holy War: The Punisment Due ... from Megadeth !
Paul Mann I respect the talent but just can’t stand Mustane
@@odiumsfist1 How come? As a musician I find Mustaine's voice to be quite terrible in the remastered versions of his music but pretty decent albeit a bit of an acquired taste in the originals, and his guitar work and especially solos to be legendary. As a person (so far as I can understand without knowing the guy) I respect him quite a bit because although in his older days he used to be pretty wild and had some issues, he turned his life around and is transparent about his faith.
This has got to be the Dad’s favorite song that they’ve reacted to. He was cheesing with a big smile the whole time, nodding his head in approval with every lyric, complimenting the sound, loved the solos, got goosebumps, etc... great song for sure
Bass parts I didn't notice.. He still wouldn't notice the Bass line on , and justice for all
Jeff Abbott clown 😂😂
Lmao that’s messed up
Ha. Because there were no bass lines on AJFA.
Lol what bass line
@@smithsrule96 some have a MAGA hat ... we have the AJFA hat
That my friend is kirk on 🎸...this album was wayyyyy ahead of its time..its going on 36 yrs old..whole album was great..and justice for all is probably the best one..
john milner I agree with you. This is my favorite album though because I love the rawness of this sound coupled with such an amazing amount of shred. Keep rockin!
@@NorCalGuy Yeah for me ride the lightning is the best. It's so raw and every song is a masterpiece. Master of puppets and AJFA are next
@Shallex yeah.... rhythm only...he is in no way as talented as kirk..that's just facts..still love em though..probably my all time favorite band..
whoah! James is Metallica. LOL. James openly admits nobody wants to hear him play leads. But there is none better than James at tight and right rhymes.
@@johnmilner6505 James IS Metallica. He is the driving force behind every song. Kirk is a soloist and he can shred, but James is the brains behind the music and so is Lars, even though Lars gets shit on he's still a big part of the whole product.
Honestly being Christian in 2019..
And knowing the whole satanic Panic of the 80s and 90s which was b*******.
Metal lyrics are more Christian meaning think...
I agree 100%
Ironically, the singer for Slayer (Tom Araya) is a Christian. Even though many of his songs are critical of religion, and even God. I'm not religious but I do think that one should hold their beliefs to a high standard, and his anger is understandable when you look at the state of the world compared to how it could be.
Those anti-Christian lyrics are actually written by guitarist Kerry King.@@devo3243
Devo even Megadeth's lead singer and guitarist Dave Mustain became a born again Christian. He was the original Metallica guitarist. Also Alice Cooper has been a lifelong Christian
Yup man a christian myself and these songs are amazing no matter what
I want to thank you both for making this video. During this pandemic that we are living in, this review of this song has brought me a lot of peace. This video has started three conversations with church brothers and sisters, and with my brothers by blood. The song rips!
Iron Maiden- Hallowed Be Thy Name
Motorhead- I Dont Believe A Word
Can I request Megadeth's Holy Wars? please
No, you cannot

Still one of my all time favorites. Started listening at 16. Now I show my kids what the old Metallicas did for music and metal
I would definatly visit this pastors church
I’m not even religious and I would too 😂
Same. I don't think I'd be converted to Christianity, but I doubt I'd be alienated by the message.
me too. i dont attend church due to the fact ive encountered nothing but hypocrisy. once any given church ive tried giving the benefit of the doubt to, knows i can see right thru them, then the shunning & cold weird attitudes start
Ultra lol
One of the greatest songs ever recorded
As an athiest, this was really insightful about this story! Thanks
Same here!
Its atrue story told in 100 languages if you believe or not.
👊
I like how open minded this pastor is! ❤ Playing the electric guitar and having to co-ordinate it with the drums is an extremely difficult thing and is a talent that I believe is God -given. I don't think there is anything wrong with having to use your talent to entertain. I personally, listen to songs by Metallica whenever I'm depressed and it has been an instant cure. Metallica has even inspired me to play guitar too!
Yeah he's open minded if he plays the electric guitar. Not so open minded when people criticize the bible.
Just so you know, James Hetfield is an active christian.
Neat. I knew he was raised Christian, I didn't know he still was. Is there an article or video I can read?
@@puigi You can check out his Wikipedia page. It outlines that Hetfield was raised Christian Scientist, which is a denomination of Christianity.
@@danat2127 Yeah but I though he was an atheist for a little while during the first few albums. Maybe he is still Christian.
An active alcoholic, too.
@@danat2127 Oh yeah in The Unnamed Feeling's music video he has a cross necklace and in Here Comes Revenge he says, "I was Abel he was Cain."
I've watched so many reactions to this song & the live video of their epic historical performance in Moscow 1991...Loved the ones that had never heard the song before & their reactions. THIS reaction/analysis just popped up & I Love that it is the first of all the videos to talk about the meaning of the song. By a Pastor. Great breakdown of the story. Thank You...Loved This!!! Even now in 2021!!!
Respect. Great to see an intelligent conversation about the song with minimal interruptions. Great work guys.
As an Agnostic Seeker, I love your take on these songs. I'm looking for the truth in every story. This one was particularly enlightening. Thank you
👊
Ok so what is the truth you are looking for and how is a pastor's take on a Metallica song going to lead you towards any kind of truth? Unless it's the truth about how badass these riffs are.
Surprised you haven’t done Metallica yet but glad we finally got to them 🤘🏻
I love Theocracy. A little Maiden and metallica mixed in one.
James has stated multiple times this song is specifically based around Charlton Heston's "The Ten Commandments"
The "Ten Commandments" is based on the story of the exodus, out of the book of Exudos in the Old Testament. The story of the ten commandments and the law given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai emmedietly proceeded the Passover & the ten plagues.
Imagine writing such aa song in your early 20's
He was 16*
@@gabrieljosephsson8826 Kirk was 16 when he originally wrote the die die riff
the funny thing about this is that this comes from the passover (Exodus) and the "die by my hand" riff originally came from a band called "Exodus" that Kirk Hammet (he wrote that riff) was part of before joining Metallica.
I highly recommend The God That Failed by Metallica
and please read the lyrics
This song is about the time anger towards God for their families belief that God will heal you and you don't need modern medicine. James mom died from cancer when he was 13.
yes! great!
Nate aichele,you are right
@@nate5539 Sounds a LOT like "Judith" by A Perfect Circle.
Their new stuff musically is cool but I just cant get into it like the older stuff. Even Justice was epic jam album.
Preach! Spot on. 👍👍👍
Justice was their best album imo. Definitely lars' best drumming and vocals by James. They were at the Pinnacle of their career at that time..
Joey Noyes It’s a great album. I can see why it’s a lot of people’s favorite album. Personally I put it #2 as My opinion is Puppets is the greatest metal album ever written. But I’m also one of the outliers on the internet who loves almost every Metallica song off of everyone record. St. Anger doesn’t count. Love Load, Reload, Death Magnetic and Hardwired. I’m a Metallica fan down to my bones for life.
Garotte14 Me to been fan since Jan 84 everything by Metallica is awesome
I think you get more bang for your buck out of garage days re Revisited
That’s awesome that you listen to the music with an open mind. A lot of pastors, when they hear the first few licks, turn the music off and don’t even want anything to do with it. Thanks for the feedback. God Bless. I love this music. Red, August Burns Red, and wolves at the Gate are awesome bands as well.
Creeping Death was written by Cliff Burton (RIP) as he was a big fan of the 10 commandments movie featuring Charleston Heston.
Finally, someone explains the whole Jesus dying for our sins thing in a way I can understand. I literally had a bind blown moment.
To see a pastor headbanging to Metallica....Priceless. As a Christian myself, I have just begun to reunite myself with alot of music from my past...it's actually helping me reconcile with alot of my hurts. Alot of songs you would think would do the opposite....influenced me out of my darkest moments...thank GOD! Thank you for your openess to really hear what many from my generation have experienced musically. May it bless you and help you even more in your ministry to others.
You can thank god, or you can thank the actual music you have evidence for influencing your life in a positive way.
@@whitelikejesus it's both for me. God first, then the beautiful gift of music that he created us to be able to produce. We each are given certain gifts, and s9me are boess3d with the gift of mus8c. Yes, it can be learn3d. But for some, it comes naturally.

i’ve only heard the song 2-3 times and was never able to understand the lyrics until this video and was able to understand what he was saying and it gave me goosebumps

Cliff was the bands biggest influence in the early days.
This is still one of my favourite songs, but I never knew this story. Thank you, I got goosebumps after listening to it back :D
I really enjoyed this, thank you! Keep up the great work!
One thing that amazes me about this album is how young they were when they wrote it... early 20's and this was the product...always think of how many great songs were on the first 3 albums and they were all under 25...no wonder they became the world conquerers of metal
actualy kirk wrote the die die riff at 16
