1.6 million people,"but they stop counting at 1.6 million, there were over 2 millions", 53 people died, the “security” was the army. The crowd was the horizon. That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow, Tushino airfield. 1,6 million people saw Metallica, AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera. That was a legendary MoR. The entrance was free.
As far as I remember, it was the third or fourth largest concert in the world. Only Rod Stewart, Jean Michel Jarre and Queen have collected more, which does not surprise anyone. According to unofficial data and eyewitness accounts, after a certain point, they simply stopped counting visitors and twice as many official statistics came. So there are about 1.6 million people in the area. The police, soldiers and cadets had to ensure order, but the music conquered everyone. Surprisingly, there is very little data on incidents at this concert. Apparently the atmosphere of music and celebration affected everyone and people helped each other, as it should be in the world.
I LOVED your reaction to this!! To see the excitement in your face, mouthing the lyrics, and enjoying the sheer energy of this production does this old metal head proud! Much love and thanks for the content!!
I always imagine what it must have felt like from the eyes of james hetfield looking into the horizon and all you see are people who appreciate your music. must be the best feeling.
“Creeping Death” from this same concert is even better 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 “Harvester of Sorrow” is another amazing one to react to, it also shows a lot of the soldiers and crowd interactions.
What I love about THIS peformance versus so many others is that it's early after the album's release, and at this point, Lars (drummer) didn't have his habit of going about 10-20bpm faster than he had to. The groove of that main riff is retained, the solo gets its time for the notes to breathe, and the energy of the song is at its best and most powerful. Sure, Metallica had more "thrashier" songs in their day, but Sandman really was lightning in a bottle, and it sent the band into Godhood.
This album sent them high into the "charts" where few metal bands had been and the popularity is unrivaled in the genre. They lost a lot of hardcore thrash fans but easily made it up with the previously untapped mainstream audience. It was awesome to many and disappointing to some. They are hands down the most popular of the big 4 and the thrash genre without doubt. Had the black album been a natural progression of - And Justice - I truly believe they wouldn't have reached the stardom they did and there would have been this base of thrash fans that would continue to love them to this day. Not picking sides, just giving some backstory - it was an awesome time to be a teenager/young guy as a music fan.
Lars the drummer said in a more recent interview that thinking back on this concert,is a real mindf**k of proportions. He remember how the militay choppers kept hovering just above peoples heads,so many unreal impressions to take in,and the 29 000 soldiers that were supposed to be there and keep an eye on the masses, they were drinking and partying themselfs. 😆 Sooo many "you wont see this happening again in a concert" moments.
In 91, I was little, but I heard that there was a rock music festival then, where not only Metallica was. and most of the tickets were free. That's why there are so many people.
Hello. I am a huge Metallica fan and I remembered when Metallica had entered at #1 on the charts in 1991 all of their shows was sold out, but the one show that they did was in Moscow, Russia was and still their biggest live show Metallica has ever played at that time by having 1.6 million people.

However Russia almost, to exxagerate a bit, almost became a third world country when it fell as they knew it from pre Berlin Wall. Russia was not very influenced by Lech Walesa and what happened in Poland (in 82 I believe)

The soviet union was just broken up and Monsters of Rock wanted to play Moscow. They played at an airport, and were supposed to let one million people in. There was a stampede and 1.6 million people showed up.
Such a great reaction to such a great performance, Rachel. There are a few great performances by bands which will go down in history, this is one of them, another which I highly suggest that you react to is, 'Queen - Somebody to Love' live in Montreal 1981. Keep up the good work that you're doing.

My best Metallica memory is working in a restaurant. I worked overnight as headwaiter of a restaurant while I was in highschool (who allows that, I don't' know). Anyway, we were a small restaurant but 24/7 so all the bar patrons came to our joint when bars closed. Every time this song came on the cook would sing as loud as he could "Ass to ASS, enter ASS" even though those aren't' the lyrics. Hi Rayactions, I appreciate your time and reaction to Metallica. Seeing this video, an American thrash metal band, and I've seen only one American flag at this concert in Russia. Props to the individual. I appreciate your long hair, very beautiful, but you need to thrash with that long hair, why not right, especially with Metallica. 🤟 1986, Albuquerque, NM, was the first time I've seen them. My age is now 48, never missed a Metallica concert. Matter of fact, there new album is the shit! 🤟 I've been waiting for a date when Metallica will be coming back to Denver, guess what, 8m spending a 1000$ dollars, plus more, with a partner and friends. You should spend that much money for Metallica! Anyways, you rock! 80's was the hair band's, that's me and thank you! Please, see Metallica, spend the money cuz it's worth it. I love you, goodnight! 🤟💪✌️
First time i saw them was early '83 in SF. Blew my mind how good they were. Cliff and Dave were awesome. Lot less people were there though...I think the club held maybe between 200 and 300 people.
Just in this very moment I noticed that James was 28 years old at this time. imagine being that old and playing in front of this crowd. Edit: 4:50 She having a heart attack right now xD
Great reaction, as usual! This was an iconic concert. I would love you to dive a band called The Warning (3 young Mexican sisters power trio) who were invited by Metallica to do a remake of Enter Sandman for the Metallica Blacklist Album. Here is a link to a great live performance of that remake: ua-cam.com/video/vg9vNE7gm0I/v-deo.html . Although the crowd is much smaller, The Warning packs a punch😁
When I was 8 years old I had to have open heart surgery to fix some stuff that was wrong with my heart to get to the point of the story I had the Black album on cassette tape I got it for Christmas then the next month I had my heart surgery I had a walkman with me and this cassette tape was in it and they allowed me to take it to surgery with me and when we got to the doors of the operating room the nurse told me "Scotty the walkman has to go" but on my way to surgery I was rocking out to Metallica I get inside the operating room and faded out. Before I faded out I took the tape out and told the nurse to play this in the operating room and they had a little jam box with a cassette player and she did it she put the tape in the jam box and hit play and Metallica started playing the surgeon said "what is this?" The nurse said "its Metallica" the surgeon said "MA WHO"? The nurse asked me "what 8 year old knows who Metallica is?" And I said this one.
It was estimated to be 1 million people over the entire musical festival that lasted 3 days. It was estimated to be about 600,000 when Metallica took the stage
This was in Moscow 1991 as you know. It was right after the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of Communisim in Russia. A bunch of other bands were there, AC/DC and Queen, that I know of. Seeing so many people come out and just be free to rock out to music is fucking cool.
So Mylady, Imagine you lived for your entire live and your parents and grands also under strict comunism regime, now you are free to go to a concert and Metallica shows up, this makes for the ppl, now you are Metallica singer or any of them, in the same situation, you probably sing your heart out, that is why this is the best Metallica concert EVER in my oppinion.
Browsed through the vids you've done so far, pretty interesting mix of the vocal reactions "meta" with other interesting bands and tracks sprinkled in. I'm going to assume you've received an absolute ton of requests, but here are a few I commonly see suggested. *Iron Maiden:* Hallowed Be Thy Name (Live) *Beast in Black:* Blind and Frozen *Lorna Shore:* To The Hellfire or Sun//Eater, they're heavier than anything on the channel yet. *Waggaki Band:* Homura or Senbonzakura, they blend traditional Japanese instruments and singing with modern rock. *Sabaton:* Carolus Rex but literally their entire discography is impressive. Less commonly requested but I think you'd enjoy them, *DOLL$BOXX:* Take My Chance. The music video is cute and funny, but good live too.
1. It was a FREE show 2. First in the history of Russia and Soviet Union before it actually collapsed 3. 1.6 million I think is an overstatement, it was much less than that but the crowd was massive 4. Some people got injured (according to some records, 52 died, but hopefully didn't) 5. Over 10 thousand soldiers were guards at this gig, they were pretty violent trying to calm down the crowd with clubs and got glass bottles thrown at them, lots of injuries, that was wild 6. Military choppers hovering above the crowd were used to cool people down (screaming at the crowd, not sure if they were hitting them) 7. Musicians ate already cold big macs 🤣delivered on Chayka car (was considered almost like a limousine at that time) from a McDonalds (and there were quite few back then I believe) Just some of the facts I got from the documentary about this gig (in Russian). Wish I was there... but I was too young) Or maybe it's good I wasn't there. Cuz the gig was WILD!
Don't sell yerself short, you have lovely hair too! Love the touch of purples you've added to your hair. It's a subtle and restrained but well executed and perfect accent!
Two years later I was at the last concert in 1993 in Basel (Switzerland)! The boys really gave it their all again, because all their loved ones and family were there too in Basel, and they knew thats the last show of this tour after 3 years of hundreds of concerts worldwide would be almost day in day out! I'll never forget this, my fourth Metallica concert! Before that, of course, we heard about this mega festival in Moscow where they were too.... Unfortunately, people died there too, Russia of course never officially named the exact number or wanted to confirm it! In the end they left the number at +/- 53 dead...However, relatives and witnesses spoke of a few hundred who died as a result of military violence and those who fell in huge quantities, couldn't get up and from the masses have been crushed under their feet - legs!!! There were 3-4 concerts in the past with even more people, Rod Stewart with over 4 million people was the biggest concert to date, free without entry or tickets in Brazil on the CC Beach!!! Crazy....
In Metallica's VH1 Behind The Music documentary the head roadie said there was something like 200 rapes and 11 deaths in the crowd during this festival. Others claim there were likely even more.

Amazing Amazing Metallica 👍👍👍
Imagine being on stage looking out over the sea of people like that and knowing that all those people are there to see you. That's insane lol
I believe the final tally was 1.6 million attendees at that historical Monsters of Rock. Absolutely Amazing!!
Good times.
I saw this concert on open tv a while later.
They had over 1 million people there. Biggest crowd I have ever scene!
Another popular video from same show. Pantera - domination.. imagine 1.6 million people amped up to 11 with this kind of music.
This was " Monsters of Rock Festival " Metallica , Ac/Dc and more ,not only Metallica ,i Have the VHS ( double )
TW!
I concur!!!
VIVA LA GENERACIÓN 80S Y 90s LO BUENO NUNCA MUERE
Hell yeah
It was estimated to be 1 million people over the entire musical festival that lasted 3 days. It was estimated to be about 600,000 when Metallica took the stage
love your reactions, keep up the ggoo work :)
i love the elderly guy with the suit and suitcase rocking all out in the crowd 😂
Hi super recommend Metallica justice for all live Seattle 89 ... Desde Argentina 🇦🇷 Saludos.
This was in Moscow 1991 as you know. It was right after the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of Communisim in Russia. A bunch of other bands were there, AC/DC and Queen, that I know of. Seeing so many people come out and just be free to rock out to music is fucking cool.
Right before, actually, the ussr collapsed in December of that year
then there was a feeling of fresh wind, expectation of change.
And now again a rotten swamp ...
You have to listen to “The Memory Remains” from the Finland, Helsinki concert in 2018
Amazing crowd participation
I discover you this night... i just love you. Im from Argentina and i Love MetallicA.
1,6 million people btw😎
So Mylady, Imagine you lived for your entire live and your parents and grands also under strict comunism regime, now you are free to go to a concert and Metallica shows up, this makes for the ppl, now you are Metallica singer or any of them, in the same situation, you probably sing your heart out, that is why this is the best Metallica concert EVER in my oppinion.
Metallica - Fade to black live in 2018
Вот так выглядит настоящая музыка, ни на одном поп-концерте никогда не будет такого моря людей!
В 2013 на концерте Раммштайн в России, было около 700 тысяч человек, это второй показатель посещаемости.
Browsed through the vids you've done so far, pretty interesting mix of the vocal reactions "meta" with other interesting bands and tracks sprinkled in. I'm going to assume you've received an absolute ton of requests, but here are a few I commonly see suggested.
*Iron Maiden:* Hallowed Be Thy Name (Live)
*Beast in Black:* Blind and Frozen
*Lorna Shore:* To The Hellfire or Sun//Eater, they're heavier than anything on the channel yet.
Great reaction! There are still people trying to get back to their car from this show! 😁 more Jinjer please and thank you! 🍻🤘
1. It was a FREE show
2. First in the history of Russia and Soviet Union before it actually collapsed
3. 1.6 million I think is an overstatement, it was much less than that but the crowd was massive
4. Some people got injured (according to some records, 52 died, but hopefully didn't)
5. Over 10 thousand soldiers were guards at this gig, they were pretty violent trying to calm down the crowd with clubs and got glass bottles thrown at them, lots of injuries, that was wild
6. Military choppers hovering above the crowd were used to cool people down (screaming at the crowd, not sure if they were hitting them)
7. Musicians ate already cold big macs 🤣delivered on Chayka car (was considered almost like a limousine at that time) from a McDonalds (and there were quite few back then I believe)
Just some of the facts I got from the documentary about this gig (in Russian). Wish I was there... but I was too young) Or maybe it's good I wasn't there. Cuz the gig was WILD!
The most insane live clip I’ve ever seen, bar none.
I was about 15 years old in 91 but I remember
Would love to see your reaction, to Pantera Domination, from this same show in moscow 1991!
Legend says, people are still making their way back to their cars.
I was not there..still..hmm..healing after Rollins band )

Next Dimas Senopati Reaction, he a Voice High Vocal From Indonesian is the best
It was one of their first tastes of freedom after 70 years of communism, they had been totaly repressed. Largest concert in history up until that point. The cold war was very real.
