Just to clarify, the line up on this recording is Robert Plant (vocals)/ John Bonham (drums)/Chris Brown (piano)/ Kevyn Gammond (guitar) and Paul Lockey (bass) all as per the photo. See also Hey Joe and For What It's Worth. All three are demos from the same session at New Regent Sound studio in London in 1967. The last two tracks are also to be found on Robert's "Sixty Six to Timbuktu" album.
I think this proves to a lot of people Plant and Bonham were more essential to Led Zeppelin than Jimmy Page was, not excluding Page as one of the greatest, most influential guitarists of all time, but you could picture this being a Zeppelin song.
This really sounds very good. Thank you so much for posting this. This is the first time I've heard the original Band Of Joy from the '60s, and it's really exciting to hear, and cool to hear that it was this good. I can see why they knocked Page's socks off when he first heard them.
early Plant had no equal as far as I am concerned . Not even Marriott . Makes my hair stand evrytime . This is a cool song too just has a killer dark vibe
Plant had a great, great voice. Equal parts power, expression, and technical stuff like range and pitch. Good singers are rare and great ones are few and far between. You can count the ones that are in Plant's class on one hand. He was a natural, and it seems like he didn't learn how to belt it without wearing out his voice.
@@soup_is_good_food5743 yes he was a true blues singer , untrained and more concerned with getting the emotion across than anything else. He lost some of his top range after 1972 but he adjusted well and still had a powerful delivery afterwards. I'm almost glad he did , because I personally don't care for the excessive high pitched screaming stuff like Steve Marriott started doing all the time onstage with Humble Pie. Plant sounded best to me on Led Zeppelin's first 4 albums, but when I hear stuff like I'm Gonna Crawl or Fool in the Rain , I definitely am not thinking ' here is a guy who has lost it '
Whoa, WHAT A TRIP! It's as if I've just discovered Led Zeppelin that I never knew about. Clearly, it's not Jimmy Page on guitar, but the voice and power of Robert Plant is there, and it's like a tiny snippet of the mighty Zepp, out of the blue. AWESOME!
Oh lord if I could have any voice it would be Robert Plant's from this time period until 1971. After that year he doesn't sound the same. Imagine if Zeppelin had started in 65 how many more great albums with this voice. I hate he lost it but I read he had surgery on his throat in 1972 due to knots on his vocal chords.
I liked Plant when I was a high schooler but now many years later, I really appreciate how truly different, how astonishing, what a human powerhouse he was. Absolutely he is one of the greatest singers ever. I get the feeling that he was a natural, which was both his treasure and his handicap -- in his technique or lack of it, he blew out his voice after just a few years. But for those years his voice was unmatched brilliance.
Mick Strode doing what he does best! I saw him in 1998 in a club somewhere as part of The Duke La Rue Blues band a while back. Got his and the rest of the band's autographs somewhere on the CD which I bought after the gig :)!!!!!
amazing. plant's blue's chops coming out in this one. love the letter by john hill filling in the led zeppelin gaps, page has said he was recommended a look at robert (and bonham) by terry reid, probably prompting the meeting, wonder if plant was already going to london or if he went there to meet page? no cell phones or texting in those days, trying to run someone down would take some time.
Found this just by chance. Very interesting, never knew the Band of Joy ever recorded. I saw them a few times back in 67/68 around Brum but that was the band with Bonham, Chris Brown etc not the line up on this. Sounds very good!
🌹Oh wow, I'm a⚡️LedZepHead and💪🏻proud to be, my ZepSon Robert's just a wee🐥lad here and I think he sounds just as great today. ⚡️Led Zeppelin's the💪🏻greatest rock group of all time (and space) to me. 👏🏻Thanks for sharing.
Actually Robert Plant wasn’t even his first choice as his singer, Terry Reid, Steve Winwood and Steve Marriott were reportedly considered first but I’d say it worked out pretty well for all of them 🤘🏽
@honeydripperKJ I'm seeing him in Clearwater Fl July 30th. That theater tops out at 2180 seats and not one of them is bad. the acoustics are insane also. Should be a great show.. Ringo is there July 13th also.
Hi Randy, I'm currently venue manager at Mac Arts (The Duncan Mackinnon Music and Arts trust) named after and in memory of Drunken Duncan named in your text. His other claims to fame included throwing the Beatles off stage in Galashiels for being too scruffy and paying performers in half cash and half fruit, veg and eggs. They just don't make them like that anymore! Great track BTW
hiya chap, there may be the odd snap of the last band of joy that someone may have taken on the tour arround the scottish towns that we did for the promoter duncan mc,kinnon. i can send you a photo of myself from this time and maybe you could get in touch with mick strode for the same ( hes still playing too), he might have a shot of the last lineup. it was myself that mentioned bonzo to percy when he was in a band called 'listen; john was one of my best mates all the best john hill
Thanks so much for posting. I had the pleasure of seeing Plant jam with Kevyn Gammon in 2000 with Priory of Brion in Cardiff. And holy shite--that footage of Bonzo is remarkable. Any noises out there about East Coast tour dates?
He was teaching at Kidderminster college 20-odd yrs ago when I was on a music course there. Lovely, crazy-in-a-good-way bloke and never spoke of his association with Mr. Plant.
@Geotubest Bob's catching up: Now he's got a 65 year old soul in a 63 year old body. Luckily he's still got he energy of a 20 year old, along with a much improved version of "Band of Joy",(not counting John, of course, who can't be improved upon)..
@luvthatzeppelin: It doesn't hurt having Jimmy Page producing all of your work. I'm not saying he was an Eddie Kramer, but he always knew what needed to be done to achieve the right sound for that moment of the album. Zep was four outstanding musicians working together as a team instead of squabbling over girlfriends like most bands do. . .
@msmarko The line-up only concerns the members. Another thing, I've been told that they never owned the name New Yardbirds since they were dubbed that by outside sources.
Hi thehellhecould I remember Chris Brown's dad, think they lived in Dagger Lane (the posh part of West Brom!) Chris had a brother whose name I can't remember now. If I recall correctly, Mr Brown sacked RP because he thought he couldn't sing, that's what I was told anyway!
we all used to call chris browns dad 'pop', his brother was steve, who went on to become a booking agent in a london agency. they also had a crazy jack russel dog ,,,,
@Luckyrawk It's not the same thing: Band Of Joy had no commercially released body of work to live up to in the public's perception. The new band doesn't even try to sound like the original. Using the old name's merely an affectionate nod to the past, nothing more.
One of rock's greatest vocalist.
by far the best voice... he brings chills down my spine every time I hear him in his younger years. No one compares...
R.I.P John Hill. Awesome Bonham/Hill rhythm section now reunited.
Jason Richford he was a great bass player, RIP ❤️
I love this voice👍
I love to hear this old Band of Joy stuff. You can really hear why Page was so impressed, cant ya!

Wow that sounds like Page on the guitar..dude was good whoever he was.
B. Grove.!! Kevyn Gammond
That was my immediate thought. I just got chills reading you comment. Look up babe come on home. I think it's plants best.
Page is quite the guitar god but the guitarist on this song is not too shabby, either.
plushlush. Kevyn Gammond!!
I can definately see why Jimmy wanted him for his new group. What soul.
And Bonham too
Jimmy did NOT select plant. He wanted Terry Reid, but Terry refused and HE recommended Plant and Plant said sure but you have to take my drummer also
King R.Plant
I think this proves to a lot of people Plant and Bonham were more essential to Led Zeppelin than Jimmy Page was, not excluding Page as one of the greatest, most influential guitarists of all time, but you could picture this being a Zeppelin song.
If you told me this was an early Zep demo I might actually believe it.
This really sounds very good. Thank you so much for posting this. This is the first time I've heard the original Band Of Joy from the '60s, and it's really exciting to hear, and cool to hear that it was this good. I can see why they knocked Page's socks off when he first heard them.
The tune to this song really makes me feel extremely comfortable and warm on the inside, reminding me of my childhood years when I was very young
early Plant had no equal as far as I am concerned . Not even Marriott . Makes my hair stand evrytime . This is a cool song too just has a killer dark vibe

I'm amazed, I have not heard this music.'s Incredibly beautiful!
Im amazed at some of the stuff I have.... Im very proud of my collection... Glad ya like it... Thanks
And thank you for sharing!
Wish this was remastered. Blinding stuff. Vocals, lead and bass just sublime 👌 💕

IT SEEMS TO BE THAT WAY !
You're right about that...it was the records that made it happen.

if they started in 65 i dont think the audience would still be alive after their shows
Mick Strode doing what he does best! I saw him in 1998 in a club somewhere as part of The Duke La Rue Blues band a while back. Got his and the rest of the band's autographs somewhere on the CD which I bought after the gig :)!!!!!
Robert Plant sings the blues better than the average Anglo/Saxon.
it is the gipsy in him.
Better than Gwen Dibley? Don't go out on a limb.
Brazilian Atlantis who?
Than anybody!
@@thebrazilianatlantis165 yes better
Wow, never heard this before.......man, now we can hear why Page and Grant were impressed.....
Thanks for posting, again!
I like it. sounds as good as Zepplin
+nik knak (drumkraze123) You cannot forget about John Paul Jones
+Ethan Oswald ==Your'e so rightand did'nt john play on some of the yardbird recordings too
Jones definitely did a lot of studio session work prior to Zeppelin. I'm not aware of him playing with the yardbirds, but its very possible.
+Ethan Oswald Jones played on some of the Little Games sessions and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago".
Wow! Thanks for posting this!

that needs to be sold again
This song also sounds very relaxing to me.
Amazing talent in one man wow Amazing 😮 🙃❤🤪😜😛😋😍🙏💯
Mesmerized. I really can't get enough
This voice! It's not possible for anyone to get close to this voice.
🌹Oh wow, I'm a⚡️LedZepHead and💪🏻proud to be, my ZepSon Robert's just a wee🐥lad here and I think he sounds just as great today.

Band of Joy Rocks...then and now...love all of RP's stuff alone or with others...especially JP and Bonham.

This has got to be the song that Page said here is my singer. This presages all that comes in Zeps first album
Actually Robert Plant wasn’t even his first choice as his singer, Terry Reid, Steve Winwood and Steve Marriott were reportedly considered first but I’d say it worked out pretty well for all of them 🤘🏽
WOW this sounds great

I hope that someone can post "For What it's worth" by Band of Joy.
He makes me want to lose my mind too!

A 65 year old soul in a 20 year old body.
Love it. No wonder Page thought him for Zep, Not far away.
James Brandner jimmy page didnt think of him. jimmy page wanted terry reid. and terry reid declined and suggested plant.
Correct you are!
Sounds a Baby Zeppelin.. His voice's so connected w/ the 70's band
thats my baby till the ends
WHERE THE HELL IS KEVYN GAMMOND ? WHAT A GUITAR SOUND !!!

Wonder how the other blokes in this band handled the fact they were that close to two guys who would become So Big?
Plant dedicated the name "Heartbreaker" to them. (Not actually)
А полный альбом можно найти?
that voice is un fucking believable
man.. i wish i could get this version cleared up a bit..
@Tecumseh1812 All I said was that I was seeing them play this month...
Mick is still playing and recording - google mick strode for his website
anyone know where to find a copy of the album(?)/ studio sessions?
Maybe when he screamed is when CBS would change the pitch of his voice.
Probably not though.
any one know where to pick up copies of the album(s?)/ studio sessions?

yep..well said....when the spanish guy owned it...cheers hilly
Awesome playlist...but you're missing my favorite pre-Zeppelin Robert Plant song "Our Song". Maybe you're just focusing on Band of Joy?
