  • Today, it’s the origin story of an unrivaled rock band that was actually “this close” to never happening…Led Zeppelin almost didn’t work. At least not with the legendary lineup we’ve all come to revere. Rising from the ashes of another historic band, the Yardbirds young guitar virtuoso Jimmy Page dreamed of assembling the ultimate rock powerhouse… The only catch was, with a tour already booked, he only had a month to do it. Now he just needed to find three prodigies who could help him alter the rock’s sonic landscape forever... No problem, right? How Jimmy Page recruited John Bonham, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones and recored their 70s classic Good Times, Bad Times to make everyone forget about the Beatles breaking up and it only took 15 hours of rehearsal before they recorded their massive debut record that a critic once called weak… Didn’t matter, they became the heaviest band ever!

I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show we breakdown songs, albums or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long term success. On previous episodes we have covered The Joker by Steve Miller Band, and Bang a Gong (Get it On) by T Rex. Today we are covering the origin story of Led Zeppelin and the song that kicked it all off for the band… Good Times Bad Times.
The story of Led Zeppelin actually begins with an entirely different high-flying band from the 60s... The Yardbirds. Or to be more precise, the quick-fire dissolution of the Yardbirds. So, by the July 1968, the storied five album band was all but done following the departure of vocalist Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty. By August 1968, Jimmy Page was the last man standing with bassist Chris Dreja on the fence. But Page had a plan to assemble a new incarnation of the group called the ‘New Yardbirds’ with the help of manager Peter Grant.
Even before the Yardbirds folded, Page had imagined what his dream band would look like. Said Page, “I knew exactly the style I was after and the sort of musicians I wanted to play with, the sort of powerhouse sound I was really going for.” Page envisioned a trio of instrumental prodigies... a man on guitar, another on bass, and one on drums. Added to that, he wanted a fourth member, a singer whose voice could rise over the roar of the instruments and could command center stage. Page was pretty obsessed with finding this last component. And was convinced that after finding the right voice, everything else would fall into place.
In Page’s mind, Stevie Winwood or Steve Marriott could have each been a good fit. But Winwood had gone from the Spencer Davis Group to Traffic. And Marriott had landed in Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. So, Jimmy reached out to another vocalist... Terry Reid.

The Beatles have never been bettered yet and will probably never be. Their achievements are unequalled. However, every Guitar band since 1957 owes much to one man. At that time many record execs had had The Beatles say inspired them and that is the one and only MR Buddy Holly.

I wouldn't say he lost his voice but he definitely can't hit those really high notes any more. He does the Zeppelin songs in his new band very differently not requiring him to hit high notes. Even when he was younger ( I've seen LZ 5 times) he couldn't hit some notes live and sang around them. Lots of his vocals were sped up on tape to give him that high voice and higher notes. Still think he's great but wanted to inform you of that.

That’s something and it was such an original sound - DLR and Eddie - I mean…. Zep was sensational, massive, has staying power but. And Delp is my fave rock singer ever, but not sure how great a front man? Never saw a Boston show but that voice and range was just bananas talented.

Plant had a great voice but it was the attitude and swagger that came across in his delivery that really set him apart from other rock singers . Sure he had the range to do all the vocal acrobatics which he was known for in the first years of the band but his look coupled with his lyrics and his delivery made a hell of an impression on people . Heartbreaker, Levee Breaks , Rock and Roll and later Wanton Song, Tea for One , In My Time etc . Even when his range decreased after surgery he was still able to sound powerful and on the edge

      @teemcshanney8910 Рік тому +2

I disagree with the "swagger" part. Ozzy Osbourne had swagger. Not culturally explosive.
      Led Zeppelin was.
Bono of U2, great voice and stage presence and swagger but not quite as culturally explosive. Jim Morrison of The Doors had swagger. Yes, culturally explosive, but did they break huge new ground musically? Maybe in some ways, with the variety of music, especially the unusual stuff at the dynamic hit stuff like Riders on the Storm and LA Woman, Of course The End and Break on Through and... but not like the power of Zeppelin.
Maybe third or fourth or 5th after Zeppelin.
Free or Bad Company with Paul Rodgers: Great singer, lots of swagger, good songs, excellent rock -- but not culturally groundbreaking songs.
It was the whole band working together, with the genius of Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, whose role is usually seriously underestimated as the arranger and keyboard / synthesizer player who made incredibly inventive sounds and worked incredibly well with John Bonham, one of the greatest, possibly the best ever, rock drummer.
You can't discount swagger, singers must project stage presence, but there are plenty of singers with much more swagger or attitude on stage. Plant was more of a personality and a presence who drew attention to himself with hand motions, the way he stood, the way he sang but he would have been shite without his incredible voice.

Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band and Jimmy is the greatest guitarist of all time in my book. I was 11 in 1987 the first time I heard stairway to heaven. Every song I ever heard is magical and dynamic. I’ve been playing guitar over 30 years and still haven’t been more inspired.

Army, 1969: you could ride Good Time Bad Times in a Huey all the way to do a deed, and arrive ready for it more awake and alive than you needed to be. The back-chatter was, Our Good Times, HoChi Minh's Bad Times. And of course, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, on the way back I know, I know, history tells a different story than the moment, but as with all history, you had to be there.

"How Many More Times" was the first song I learn when I started taking guitar lessons back in 1980. Jimi Page was the guy that wanted to sound like back then. I had a very bad VHS copy of "The Song Remains The Same" in those days. My friends and I would often end up back at my house for a late night viewing. Led Zeppelin was always on the top of the rock and roll world back then. I remember the dat JB passed. Tickets went on sale that very day in Chicago for that years tour. They were so big that the tickets had to be bought by mail. There was a full page in the "Chicago Tribune" that gave you the info on how to buy tickets. I was getting all of that together to mail off for tickets when we heard the news that Bonzo passed away.

I can't remember the first time I heard Led Zeppelin, owing to my having been born shortly after they put out their first album! Seriously, I was raised on their music and still listen to them today. I can't imagine my teen years without them, as I played their albums constantly throughout high school. When I went to Germany on a student exchange, I took my Zeppelin tapes with me, introducing my host family to their music. Good times, bad times, they've always been there as part of my personal soundtrack.

He had LZ II, Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen (can't remember specifically), and many others in his collection. I listened to LZ II continually. I was hooked from the start. I was 9 or 10 depending on when this introduction occurred. Saw them live in 1975 (first concert) and 1977. Good times!
