I don't understand all the bias reviews and comparisons against VW. This car looks so much better externally and internally than any Golf. I know the review was going to be poor the second you put up the picture of a cat doing a dump, very tasteless and I don't understand the comparison. Mazda gave you a car to test and in return you tell them it looks like a cat taking a shit? The tech of the car alone rivals all its competitors including VW. The reverse camera is crystal clear (something you have often moaned about on other cars). It has a built in windscreen heads up display something that your typical run of the mil hatchback hasn't got and something you happily skipped over. The interior overall is beautiful but yet you didn't wanna go into too much detail about it all. It really seemed like you didn't want to say anything great about it? Yeah you advised people to shortlist it but you never sold it that way, it appeared you always tried to highlight the bad points which I think you struggled to do. I don't own or work for Mazda, i'm just tired of all the bias reviews towards VW. I also change down into 3rd not 4th if I want speed up like everyone else does.
I have the previous shape Mazda 3 2018 reg and it's great. It blew VW out of the water on price and overall quality. If the new Mazda 3 is even better - which it looks like it definitely is and the Skyactiv-X engine is a big improvement (which it seems it's going to be) I cannot think of another car for the price that will even come close in feel and quality other than the saloon version! Every car I drive now I end up comparing the gear shift to the Mazda's as well because they are just so slick and direct.

@@chrissayer9049 Blew out of water? Hardly. My Android auto never works with the info console on 2018 Mazda 3. Plus the noise level of 2018 Mazda 3 is crazy. It's a fun car to drive but I would not want to do a road trip in it.
I own a 2020 Mazda 3 Skyactive X which replaced my 2017 BMW 116D. I admit I used to be a badge snob but this car has changed my mind. It is incredibly good value for money. Whilst I sometimes miss the turbo-charged engine on my old BMW this car is actually pretty good fun to drive. When it comes to equipment... well this car came with pretty much every gadget and safety feature you could possibly ask for. If you want all those features on a BMW be prepared to spend a fortune.
I like still having CD player. My car you can rip your CD's and use jukebox to listen. Great job for road trips. The CD player is in glovebox. Love this feature.

I own a 16 Mazda 3 with the Bose audio and let me tell you the CDs sound tremendous! Maybe cause im a purist when it comes to music (i grew up in the 80s/90s) but i find myself playing CDs all the time in my 3! 🤘🔥

@@DBSTH0R No, they are absolutely not. The current engine options are the biggest selling point of the new Mazda 3. I'm not a huge fan of digital drivers' displays. The bare minimum for me is a physical speedo, tacho. Sending a real needle swinging round a dial adds to the drama of driving, rather than some pixels in a slab of liquid crystal. And do what you want with a central display but there should be a coolant/oil temperature readout. The other stuff like Sat-nav can be relegated to a HUD. Props to Mazda for sticking to (mostly) real dials

Bought a 2021 Mazda 3 HB with 6 sp manual recently (only comes in Premium trim - I didn't complain). I test drove other compact cars with 6 sp manual and they didn't hold a candle to the quality and gorgeous design in this car. I've driven Toyota my whole life, but this car was so beautiful inside and out, plenty of power, smooth as silk clutch and shifting, tight on the corners, quiet, getting 39 mpg on highway so far and this car isn't even broken in yet. I suppose if you were using it for racing it would need more power, but it accelerates in 6th gear up the steepest hills we have in our area including the mountain passes. The infotainment beats touch screen by a mile (hate touch screen - fingerprints, takes too much focus, doesn't always respond to touch, no different than messing with your cell phone while driving IMO). With no touch required, Mazda was able to set the screen back farther into the dash so your eyes aren't looking down at all - only over, and it's angled toward the driver. Ya, it took a bit (couple days) to memorize what buttons do and the few patterns I use most often, but after only a week I can do most everything without even looking at the screen. All of this coupled with voice control and it's eyes free control. And a favorites button brings up anything you mark as a favorite so you don't have to search for your favorite siriusxm or radio channels or destinations. Most anything can be put in favorites. I'm so glad I rediscovered the Mazda brand.

I didn’t have CarPlay or A auto and that really bugged me, glad to see they finally sorted that. He doesn’t mention it, but engine really comes alive over 3k rpm, that acceleration test is not how someone who lives with car would do it, you learn pretty quickly, drop down an extra gear - you bought a sporty hatch not a mommy mobile - in for a penny, in for a pound so drive its like it was designed for!

@@dystopia2386 I've driven 2 cars that had minor problems with gear changes - my almost new (at the time) Opel/Vauxhal Astra H had trouble with going into 1st and 3rd gear, and my mom's brand new citroen C3 had an issue with 1st gear and reverse. Nothing major - if you depressed the clutch, and engage the same gear again, it would go right in. My Opel had the issue once every 2 weeks, then like once a month, once every 3 months, and it eventually disappeared completely at ~60k km. Citroen's trouble with 1st gear disappeared after a while as well (currently at 17k km, i think), though the reverse is still finicky. It's entirely possible my parents were using too much force to push the reverse in, though, since they're old, and they've used janky, old, cars most of their life. So judging by my experience i figure sometimes gearboxes need a little time to adjust in new cars, and my mechanic told me gears not going in every now and then are a common thing, anyway. I look forward to checking how it all works in my new mazda 3 saloon, when it finally arrives at the dealership, at the end of December. Here's hoping it'll be reliable.

Mazda are what the German premium brands want us to think they are - an engineering led company making superbly engineered cars with a lot of innovative tech, fantastic interiors and great to drive. You also get a lot more for your money and they will probably be more reliable.
CD players are for audiophile and real people who appreciate quality sound. Most Japanese cars still have it as an alternative to compressed music which is dull. It's a matter of appreciation rather than an afterthought.
Currently driving a 2nd gen Mazda 3 2.2d and absolutely love and actually prefer the look of it to the 3rd gen and looks more sporty. Such a fun car to drive and takes twists and bends no problems. Though it can be a bit noisy on motorways but all in it's a fantastic car still to this day 😁
@@brian_mwaura Well I wouldn't say gimmicky, they have their use, but I think Mazda did the right thing here, while I prefer the dials of a leon, golf etc. I think on non autonomous/self driving cars it only adds to distraction as more people keep looking down. So I get it it's stylish but has no real use in a car you drive daily. Most people configure them once and never change them anyway. The only thing I wished for in the Mazda was a tad more configurability in terms of dials and HUD, other than that probably the best non digital looking... digital dials out there

No word on the head up display available across the range. Maybe we should all just drive the same again, dull Golf that he loves to promote. It's a combination of spark ignition and combustion that enables X technology.
Agree, really liked the review but some portions of the video feel quite uniformed (eg. higher trims come with led lights, not true all trims come with led lights, only exception is that entry level trims have a halogen daytime running light) about the car and are rather used to nitpick about things no one cares about
Simply THE BEST car in it's class. I love the design! Naturally aspirated engines and Automatic transmission is the way to go for me. Not a big fan of CVT tranny's and turbocharged engines. It feels more engaging to drives than it's competitors and more premium of a car for with better use of materials. TOP safety ratings too. Most of them are MADE IN JAPAN, which is a huge factor for me. Awesome package all around. Great Job Mazda!
This seems a bit of an odd review for Mat, one of the most critical I can remember of his from pretty much every area - of what seems to be a very good car. Even criticising rear space whilst seeming to have plenty of it and things like that... Many of the things he doesn't like are worse on other cars where he hasn't mentioned it.
In what possible way? Overall I think he gave an excellent review of it. Did you expect him to keep quiet about the lack of practicality? Having tested both the 3 and the Focus myself, I can tell you his review is absolutely spot on. The 3 is excellent, but it is less practical, slightly less sharp to drive and a little bit less comfortable than the Focus. And I agree with him that it looks a bit odd.

Mazda employees:
Just took a test drive in one and loved it. The quality of the interior is exceptional, and closer to the prestige interiors of the Audi A3’s...etc. The petrol engine skyactive g is smooth and better on motorways as a cruiser than 1.0 litre rivals in this class. Mazda really seem to want the driver to be connected with the car and to enjoy the experience. The looks, although these days are often subjective, are quite stunning from all angles. It is a handsome car both inside and out. I couldn’t find much wrong with this car, saving perhaps the slightly smaller rear seating compartment. I liked it so much I bought one!
My god this is the best looking new car in a while. I’m in love

I think this new Mazda3 looks really nice both internally and externally!
Bacho Pacho I think it’s a really weird car
I am with you on this one
I have the previous shape Mazda 3 2018 reg and it's great. It blew VW out of the water on price and overall quality.
If the new Mazda 3 is even better - which it looks like it definitely is and the Skyactiv-X engine is a big improvement (which it seems it's going to be) I cannot think of another car for the price that will even come close in feel and quality other than the saloon version!
Every car I drive now I end up comparing the gear shift to the Mazda's as well because they are just so slick and direct.
dka774 the VW comparisions its because its his direct competitor. the bias i dont know but just to know: matt doesnt like VW that much. Hes more of a BMW kinda guy.

Nah, he completely skipped that part. The current engine options are the biggest downside of the new Mazda 3 2019.
@@DBSTH0R No, they are absolutely not. The current engine options are the biggest selling point of the new Mazda 3. They are vastly superior in terms of reliability, durability and economy to any little turbo shit that VW or Ford puts out. Moreover, they also provide great real life performance, as they are underrated.
@@weedmastersr They are tuned down on purpose, this engine, depending on tune, can have between 120 and 163 bhp, I think it can easily be tuned to the factory 163bhp. But Mazda is soon releasing the Sxkyactiv X, which will have around 176bhp and 223NM of torque, I guess they want that to be their fun engine (as well as frugal), I can't wait to see the reviews!
@@weedmastersr Have you driven one? The performance took a major hit compared to the last gen M3 G120 engine. 0-100s is slower about 2s since the weight went up some 150kg due to added sound insulation. Not only that, but the torsion beam (new for this gen, gone is the multi link form last gen) in the rear that is supposed to give more room - yet, the boot space is 10 liters smaller than last generation. This car features some major improvements over the last gen, sadly some things took a step backwards.

I don't get why people complain about the backseat. I love it. The rear passenger window is small and gives you a feeling of privacy and security.

Matt, I never though I would say this but for the first time I felt your review was biased against the Mazda 3
@@torod213 i think he was taking about the thing with the cat
It's more reliable than a Focus and Golf, that's why it's much better
nicedude100 shares the same platform as the focus doesn’t it?
Jack Andrews no it doesn’t anymore, it hasn’t for the past 10 years
Mazda is now all japanese. This thing is A LOT more reliable than most of it's competition. They didn't f*** up their reliable engines over the years. They improved them. I hope that 2.0 Skyactive-X destroys the competition.
@@jackandrews1318 nope. No relation with Ford. OLD info
@@jackandrews1318 not anymore, their partnership ended in 2015 I believe. They still look a bit similar from certain angles though, less than in the past but it's still there. Definitely a product of said partnership.
i bought one basic model its amazing its hallz ass so comfortable and roomy and i love the look and feel of it feels like a 2 door car rather then 4 but amazing ride
Matt, as usual; I love each and every single one of your car reviews. Thank You Thank You for sharing your intellect with us. You most certainly have great taste in cars and it really shows.
The plus points. Bose sound system is good, info screen is large and well positioned. Gearbox is sweet, steering is sharp and car feels planted, brakes are good and feel is nice. Seat is comfortable. Clocks are easy to read clutch is nice. Plenty of space in the boot with rear seats down. Smooth running. Heating equipment is excellent, outside cameras are good
Bad bits. Door mirrors are in the way and can restrict view entering roundabouts- c pillars quite large too , wind noise, windows don't self clear when lowered, auto handbrake... Makes pulling away a bit of a gamble - sometimes fine others, it wants to stall so it needs a rev (maybe because I've got the awd version).
It's no slouch when it wants to go and it's very comfortable and quite practical. Once you get used to the fact it tries to drive FOR you, and get it to do as its told, it's a good fun car. Worth the money, unless you're a badge snob.
