Dude, you've become my favorite prop making channel over night. A lot of channels are really good at showing you how they go from point A to B in a very precise way and it leaves me feeling like I have tunnel vision, like their way is the only way. What is unique about your channel is that you're teaching people to learn. That's such an underrated skill but you do it so well. I'm currently making a full Mandalorian costume, and while most of the suit I know how to make, I still struggle to get the metallic finishes I'm after. But showing off just how much you trial and error things is fantastic because it tells me that no, air brushing is not the only way to achieve what I want, and if I spend enough time with this I'll figure out how to do things the way I'm trying to go about them. So, thank you a ton for posting these videos.

@@FranklyBuilt So, I have a background in 3D modeling, been doing it since 2014, and what I've found is that it's way harder to figure out alternative routes to a similar end goal in prop making... not because it isn't possible, but finances step in the way. In CAD programs I can easily hop in one and without spending a dime try and model a helmet in like 20 different ways. I've actually iterated my character sculpting process I think ten times over the years and just recently found a workflow that's pretty powerful, but that didn't require me going to amazon and waiting a couple days only to find the results weren't satisfactory.
So I get why I find so many youtube videos where people are making the same prop and yet none of them differ at all, and then you go to forums and everyone has like the tried and true method and there's not really incentive to push a boundary because of that.
What really gets me is that I thought for sure I was never going to achieve the quality of paint I wanted with rattle cans, I thought I was doomed to airbrushing (which I'll probably pick up in the future but I have so many other things going on, I really don't have time for it), but after seeing the work you produced I now know it's totally possible and that I just have to keep learning from mistakes.
The whole reason I even found your channel is because I started working on my Mando costume again today and I got so tired of manually sanding all the parts, I knew there had to be a faster way, and boom, your channel showed that you can absolutely use power tools... but with the right control. But then I got roped in watching you go through all the primers, and man your workflow is just so simple compared to everything else I've seen, it's astonishing. Also I'm glad I found that video because it confirmed that the primer I've been using (The grey filler primer) is just way too thick for my needs, so I'm glad I found an alternative that won't kill my sandpaper so quickly.
But yeah thank you for these videos! If I wind up finishing this costume I'll share the final product.
Cuda Core man I totally get that 100%. When I started printing last year everyone said you can’t use power tools and I listened. I wasted so much time and effort on bondo and crappy hand sanding and eventually I just said “dude this sucks”
I hate spoon feeding people; it aggravates me so much because you don’t learn anything. Like asking for printer profiles and what did you learn about settings? Nothing.
Painting is a nightmare of testing and trial and error and no tutorial will ever cover it all; any that claim too are lying or stupid.
So I want to teach people to experiment and go through the trials that ARE required. I have so many more tutorials planned just. Not enough time lol 😂
@@FranklyBuilt I cannot begin to describe how much I detest bondo, when I saw you using wood filler that was also a big eye opener because it just looks so much easier. I'm very happy with how far I got with my mando helmet, but the seams are all still visible, and that has to be fixed. Thankfully I don't have to hand sand the entire thing all over again!

Awesome work bud, as a fellow painter you're absolutely spot on. I'm printing my own MK7 suit now and know it's gonna be difficult and fully expect to spend more time prepping and painting than even printing lol. Keep the vids coming.

I definitely appreciate your philosophy on learning. From my experience I gained so much more when I went beyond tutorials, tried out things myself and used the products I found locally. It's especially relevant when you don't live in US of A and can't find brands like Plasti Dip, Krylon, Barge etc that appear in lot of tutorials (and not just from people living in States). After all, these are just brands and there must be some products out there that match your needs.
I see it a lot on cosplay groups that people expect to be spoonfed with tips, when they really could just do a simple google search, or as you said, do a little trial on error. I mean as long as you're not fiddling with high voltage electronics and you have some common sense, what can go wrong?
That’s my point exactly. I’m glad people are being receptive to it. You CANT have a true painting tutorial. You can’t. Not when it comes to things like this. Airbrushing and professional spraying maybe but even then it’s still all technique and learning. I don’t intend to spoon feed anyone. I refuse.

Hey I'm late to the show and I used your play list to check out the priming and preping video plus the paint video but I couldn't find the clear coat video. Did you do a video for the clear coat of those iron man parts
I'm in the process of painting some models right now. Filled sanded and put my first coat on. Looks quite good already... do you flatten between paint coats. Also do you flatten befor clear coating and inbetween clear coats? Thank u :)
Recommendation for best white paint? Trying to get a gloss finish to match my white vehicle, as I am painting car parts.

90 degrees and 88% humidity makes it hard to paint here! Good info nonetheless, thanks for putting these videos out!
What I do is spray, then bring the part inside to dry. That seems to get me better results in a hot and humid climate.
I need to get into printing and painting my helmet again. I have some equipment I bought online and I have paint I need to use to get the best asthetic as possible!

Just about to buy filament but just wondering if there is any particular reason that you went with pla? I’m looking at eSUN pla+ because it is reasonably priced and available. Do you know of any downsides to the +? Thanks
PLA+ is just a little stronger and sands easier in my experience

Do you need to remove ALL the layer lines so they don't transfer thru to the top coat, or is that too a matter of experimenting with the primer and paint combo? Thanks for sharing!
The more you remove in the sand/prime stage the less will appear. Paint and clearcoat won’t hide them
So I recently painted a mortal komabt mileena mask. It contains purple and metallic silver. I had some minor purple spray paint bleed onto the silver on the areas that were taped off. What do you recommend to fix this? I was thinking of using a good quality micro brush and gently touching up these areas. The key words being micro brush and gently...so I don't get brush strokes. Thoughts?
I've read that when you mask off a color, before using a different color give the piece a dusting of the previous color so that if there is any paint to bleed, it'll be what's under the tape already. You then move on to your next color.
Do you apply a finish once finishing the painting? I've been tempting to use 2K clear coat to give everything good protection.
Yep that’s a great clearcoat to use

what glossy panit u use to make the helmet shiny like that,mine glossy paint cant be that shiny
It’s not just about paint. You need to sand and smooth it properly
@@FranklyBuilt I have sharpened it to smooth, it's also smooth when I paint it, but when I add a layer of gloss, it's not as shiny as your

Google Name I don’t have methods lol I just pull them off. Considering support placement and evaluating how many you’ll need and angles is a tricky thing. I’d they’re too hard to remove you need to work on some settings and temperatures

I mean hydro dipping is just another form of painting. If prepped right it would work fine
If you put a thin coat of shoe polish on the silver rustoleum spray paint, you will be able to clear coat it

i love having my prints being able to see that they are 3d printed, i always sand but make sure i can still see layer lines. in my opinion it looks way cooler
