    I had not given thought to how I was gonna separate the figure itself, but now that you brought having to paint it before assembling it I'll have to rethink the approach.

    I would recommend mixing flexible resin to normal resin to deal with the brittleness of it. It really depends on the resin brand, but arount 30% of flex resin to 70% normal resin is a good start.

      @@axneon I just looked siriya tech tenacious and ask myself if its really worth it. It cost around 65€ and the anycubic eco resin i usually use cost 35€. Sure, maybe that tenacious resin is really great, but is it so good that its worth to pay almost double the price of my usual resin that isnt even a "cheap" resin itself?

    • @axneon
      @axneon 2 роки тому +8

      @@exceedtio4098 Personally, I think it is worth it! One bottle goes a long way if you ration it out correctly. Durability is important to me though bc of my cats being cats, but if it's not a concern for you then it might not be as worth it

    • @kamui004
      @kamui004 2 роки тому +3

      @@exceedtio4098 You're not using only tenacious and replacing your normal resin. Instead think of it as an additive to your normal brittle resin, you add 10 to 30% of tenacious to your normal one. If you add 10%, one bottle of tenacious will last you for 10 bottles of normal, that's 350 + 65€ for '11 bottles' total which divided ends up roughly 38€/bottle for more durable pieces. @20% it's 5 normal + 1 tenacious which divide by 6 ends up 40€/bottle. @30% it's roughly 3N+1T = 42.5€/bottle.

    Tips I learned from this video:
    Eren is very hard, he must be rubbed thoroughly until smooth, and then pegged gently before being snugged tightly by your putty. Create your own guide for getting down into his pants, if you feel you need to. Eren must then be smoothed again before he is truly primed and ready to get wet with your paint. Make sure you throw some shade at Eren, it'll help keep him realistic. Highlight his black depths so things aren't too dark though. A mask is helpful, but not entirely necessary. Eren can also be dry brushed and penciled to get more details out of him. Everyone loves a good mani/pedi, Eren is no exception. Only after all these steps and a fresh glow up is Eren ready for you...to display... 👌😩
    All jokes aside, great job as always. I was actually wondering about these.

    I don't view your comments directed to the 3d sculptors as a rant, but as a very valid critique. I'm in school for design and working with clients or trying to make things user friendly is something that gets stressed to us _all the time_ . If you want to have a product that people will buy, it has to function in a way that's as easy to understand as possible.

    • @snowpegasi

      Fair point, but most people who make models aren't professionals, and most of them can't buy a 3D printer of their own to make sure everything prints well, they find what works and go with that, and even then people who do have printers sometimes have to make concessions in order for models to print right, as a 3D modeler myself I've come to learn that even when you do everything right you're still at the mercy of the software at the end of the day.

    Our girl has every right to rip into the 3D printing community in this light-hearted and also realistic way.
    That aside, this is a wonderful way to show the pros, cons, set-backs and troubleshooting that may have to go into the long-term use and execution of this particular medium. I really like how this piece came out in the end, and commend the effort you put into this whole thing.

    • @snowpegasi
      @snowpegasi 2 роки тому +5

      It's valid in some cases but it really leaves out the 3D modeler perspective, as someone who actually makes prints I will let you know that most of us try to hide the seam where parts connect, and divide them in easy to paint segments, but that's not always possible mainly due to the fact that STL format can be very finicky the more complex your model is, more pieces means more chances for something to go wrong, and that's not a problem for people who can afford a 3D printer because they can make test prints to iron out all the kinks, but for those of us who don't have one we have to rely on overpriced services just to get test prints, so we mostly rely on cutting models in places where we know there won't be any vertex issues so we don't have to pour a ton of cash into getting multiple test prints, I won't say we all try our best and those who don't are an issue, but most of us do try.

    You are so right when it comes to both community, the 3D resin and the molding groups. But I am so happy that you were able to figure it out because now u have excess to improve, add, change and scale figures u buy or make. I started learning how to 3D sculpt during the pandemic, so me and the program Blender for 3D sculpting have a Love-Hate Relationship. So I really cant wait for the Resin Queen make figure that the people really want. I'm so excited, I can see you making different Sailor Cosmo figures or even making your avatar into a figure

      I'm pretty sure every 3D artist has a love-hate relationship with their program of choice, because even when you do everything right things can still turn out wrong because we're at the mercy of the software at the end of the day.

    I found the same thing in MANY different forums. When I was actively learning various 3d programs or trying to figure out workflows or needing feedback on concepts I mostly heard crickets. The posts with the most amount of feedback were artists who had amazing art and/or professionals. As a newb I was almost completely ignored. I didn't get any serious help until I started meeting teachers IN PERSON and working with them and even then those people might be too busy to offer any help when I needed it.
    I just gave up posting on forums.

    As a 3D character artist myself, I can say for sure that alot of 3D artists (for characters at least) are lazy and just want it to be done faster and leave it to others for prepping the model for printing. I actually worked on a figurine for a game and even with the low level of details, it took like 5 different takes to get a good print =__=. I totally understand your point of view and I'm sorry you had such a nasty experience with that community.. That said, one day I will have (I hope!) the means to buy myself a 3D printer to experiment with this medium as I would really love to make and print my own figurines! Cheers to your beautiful work!

      As a 3d sculptor that works for Patreon companies that release 3d prints every month I can say that learning to sculpt things that will print well is just experience, like learning to sculpt any other way. Unless i'm trying something completely out there, or some big diorama with multiple characters all intertwined, its rare that I have something that fails from something other than bad supports (Generally its not the artists that do supports, though I'm definitely getting less fails from that than I used to). When I first started I had fails all over the place but just like physical sculpting you learn to avoid problems as you go. Printer settings also play in to it, as each resin has different ideal settings, though the community has released lists with all of that after extensive testing so that is less of a problem, but many companies on Patreon release a set of their miniatures with "easy-print" settings, where the supports are done in such a way where there are slightly bigger connections, so if you're printing too fast it will fail less.

    I don't know much about 3d modeling or printing but I have painted and it just makes sense to separate the parts by the joints, hair or clothing so you don't have to take a magnifying glass and a teeny tiny brush to those small overlaps or details. If your a perfectionist like me and gets hand tremors sometimes, this makes it especially difficult and frustrating.
    I love that Leona doesn't just follow the model but makes her own improvements and details.
    That to me makes the difference in her work compared to others. It's the little things like that that make a HUGE difference.

    • @snowpegasi
      @snowpegasi 2 роки тому +1

      Most of us do try to segment the model so it's easy to print and hides the seams, but we have to think in different terms when we make models, we have to split up models along lines of vertices for one thing, we can't just cut a model to perfectly hide the seams unless we think way ahead in advance when placing vertices and that's not always easy because making a 3D model means solving a bunch of problems as they pop up, secondly the STL format can be very finicky and those of us without 3D printers have to rely on overpriced services to get test prints so we tend to play it safe when dividing the model so we don't have to waste a ton of cash on test prints.

I totally agree with these communities being pretty much useless. Unless you are already experienced and are being hit by 3rd companies for fake reviews there is really nothing much for the beginners to get them through without getting so frustrated and just quit. Luckily I've been able to be fairly successful so far. Have printer over 300 models and I am now printing accessories for the high end 12th scale dollshouse miniature community.

    Great video and very true of the online 3D printing community in general, and of less experienced 3D sculptors... I'm 1 of 3 digital file reviewers who volunteer on an STL Collectibles discord group. We have the pleasure of working with new and experienced digital sculptors, making sure they get all their cuts and keys right, parts split appropriately for printing and painting, and basically error-free for when a project is released to its backers. It can be difficult at times getting the needs of printers & painters across to the artists, but it's worth the effort to see the end results.

    I suspect that some of the fit issues may be due to an imperfect cure time for each layer. If the cure time is too long, then the resin will expand slightly beyond the intended print, likely affecting print fit. There are a lot of videos out there about UV resin cure times and how to perfect them! Someone else suggested mixing flexible resin into the brittle resin you’re already using. If you do that, i strongly suggest using some uv cure time test prints in order to dial in the settings for that resin as accurately as possible to prevent issues.

    Thank you for this video! it was so fascinating as I know nothing about the 3d printing world. I've only seen hobby channels use them by designing their own figures and then painting their own designs. It never even occurred to me that people would 3d sculpt and not then at least try painting their own figures, even though it seems obvious now. I hope more advice is shared here in the comments that can help in the future, because I totally understand feeling the freezout when you try to interact with a new hobby.
    Again your work is gorgeous, and I think that might be my favorite face up you've done!? All of them are stunning so it's impossible to pick a favorite LOL

    Ngl when I first watched this last month I did skip over the 3d print thoughts section (because I am a wimp who avoids bluntness, tryna work on that though), but watching it now as ref for a new project, you made some excellent and valuable points!!
    I modeled, printed, and painted up a figure before discovering this channel (I brought it up when joining the fb group but I don't think I posted it directly) and though he does look nice even now, I bet he'd look actually professional if I sectioned him properly and didn't just half ass-edly slice his legs in half. The purpose in that was to print the pieces individually bc my resin printer has a teeny build volume, but this critique has me realizing sectioning the pieces effectively would do the same thing without being ugly/annoying to fix or maneuver around! ✨
    Maybe in the near future I'll revise the model and use my updated skills/supplies and remake the little fella

    As a 3D artist that would like to start printing and painting my models from time to time I thought your point on how people slice their models really interesting, making sure you slice your model at the right seams and in places where it’d make sense for painting is one of the biggest reasons I haven’t printed many models and why I have no intention of selling my models until I get better at that, so learning how lazy some other 3D artists are when it comes to 3D printing kinda came as a huge shock

    Leona, THANK YOU! I bought my first garage kit and a couple of things I noticed that it had that same grey color to it and almost none of the pieces fit! I finally came to the conclusion that it was 3D printed. This video helps so so much thank you. !!

    Great video showing how much work 3D printing and painting are. My clients are shocked when I tell them how much a 1/6 or 1/4 figure print and paint are. They think printing is fast and easy and that the prints are ready to paint straight off the printer. It's not uncommon for a 1/6 print and paint to cost $600 or more and 1/4 usually are $1200 and up. My resin cost on a 1/4 scale piece can be $200 - $400 alone plus file set up, print time, prep time and then 40 - 60 hours to paint. This video just shows how much time is involved, and just for a 1/7 piece. Nice work as usual.

    I am hoping to professionally do 3d sculpting for things like figurines and model kits. I like watching your content and seeing what sorts of things I need to consider when sculpting something for fun versus for print. It was seeing people make figurines and customize them that got me interested in learning 3d sculpting to begin with. I think this figure turned out great! :D though I do admit I will always be partial to the glittery sailor moon projects since ....sparkles XD. Thank you for making fun and entertaining content and especially the advice regarding splitting figures in this video. I'll need to keep that in mind as I practice. I think my favorite part of this project was the faceup. I was amazed that you were able to keep such a steady hand at that small scale o.O. Keep up the good work^^

    Hi Leona. I'm a 3d modeler. You say in the video that the pegs can easily broke when drilled. So...what shape and size is better for pegs? What is the minimum size before they became too fragile? Bigger is better for the pegs? I see in the video that you had to sand all the pegs because too big. Do you think that the 3d modeler should leave more space between pegs and holes in the 3d model? 1mm? 2mm?

    • @leonasworkshop
      @leonasworkshop  2 роки тому +5

      the peg is not the problem, the problem is the brittle resin it's printed on. I drilled with a .8mm drill bit and then open the hole up with a bigger one to avoid breaking the resin peg, I ended up using 1.5mm rods for the large pieces and .5mm for the tiny ones.

I also appreciate how you show when you make mistakes and how you fix them so that we can learn from you, your mistakes and our own mistakes. It helps with knowing how to fix mistakes we make too. I don't read comments on videos often so I don't know if people bother to tell you how enjoyable you editing and commentary is, the little skits, flashbacks, the cuts to a clip or picture for dramatic effect etc etc. I know you know your figure are great and people tell you that. But just in case no one has bothered to compliment your taste in humor and editing skills. I think your extremely funny and your editing is fantastic.😸😸

    Love your work . I have a peopoly phenom resin printer. I've had it for 2 years and I love it it is easy to use with great results every time . I run it on default settings. I use to have a creality cr10 and I couldn't get it to run right no matter what I did. And I tried everything. I sold it and bought the peopoly phenom and been in creative heaven ever since. I know what you are talking about when you can't find good help . When you don't know if it's the machine or slicer settings or file or all 3 and there's no one that can help. Don't give up on resin printing it's better than fdm with less headache. If you are using a anycubic printer it will run better if you use their slicer . Happy creating..........

    Hi! I am coming from the opposite direction. I have been playing around with 3d printing for a while now and recently decided to test my printing skills on some self printed kits. The video is really interesting. I think some techniques from normal kits just don't work/apply. For instance:
    Printing in different materials might not be a good idea, even if it helps with the colors, because they might shrink differently...
    I am still testing if pinning is actually required, but if it is, it might be possible to put holes in the model before printing and then just use them for the pins... Would work only on resin, though...
