This Album is a Masterpiece. Not one bad song on the whole album. Thanks guys, really enjoy the videos.
Opeth has never ever made a bad song in their entire discography, if that's how you base your choice of the best album, then it can go from Heritage to Blackwater Park.
Overall my favorite Opeth album, with MAYH a close second.
I love them too much to disagree. Probably the only band I love unconditionally.
Correct
Still Life and Blackwater Park are their best two albums.
Perfect blend of the soft parts and the harsh bits, the playfulness and straight hard rockin'.
A Fair Judgement must be next. A MASTERPIECE 🖤
+1 along with isolation years
There's something "old" about the sound, in an emotional sense more than an aesthetic one. I've heard people use all kinds of different words to describe the feeling some Opeth songs give, like "classical" or "medieval". It's an interesting thing that we all pick up on that nebulous idea.
I was into the band for a few years, then got sober after a very low bottom, and got this album about 90 days later. It was the soundtrack to the best year of my life, 10 years ago.
❤
(Loving your love reaction)@@floridabelle

Great vid! You should defenitely listen to Harlequin Forest.
I second this notion
Lets get this to the top
When I heard this song I knew this was gonna be a special band. "The Moor" is a fantastic song from that album. I'll never forget playing that creepy intro while walking through the fog by a lake with a couple of my friends, with the streetlights shining scattered rays through the snowy boughs and the fog - that's like one of those images/memories I wish I could just send to someone for them to experience in the moment.
"The Moor" would be a great one to react to. It was my first Opeth song and I wish I could have that "first time" listening experience again.
You learnt the word "boughs" from Harlequin Forest didn't you? ;)
@@2510LuL haha actually no, but I really cannot remember the last time I used it.
My favorite Opeth album. This is the PERFECT driving long trip album. It's so incredibly dynamic almost never gets old.
Moonlapse Vertigo is the song to do from this album. It has hard hitting soft/loud dynamics and raunchy riffs. Cheers boiz
And a great bassliine, love me some Martin Mendez action
Moonlapse Vertigo is still my favorite Opeth song and my favorite Opeth song to play on guitar - just so fun all the way through.
Katatonia next please
Fun fact - Mikael named his daughter after the character of Melinda. Must be a little awkward when she finds out he calls her a 'harlot' though
It's fine. Most names are based on insults and stupid ideas anyway.
Fair Judgement would be a good pick for a Opeth reaction.
Yes to more Opeth! Once they get under your skin, they can become all consuming so be warned. Fantastic song and Akerfeldt is truly unique in the way he puts songs together. Definitely leans towards classical compositions, even at their heaviest, as opposed to being riff based, but his influences are so wide ranging that he's carved a niche all his own. In interviews he's said he used to buy records based on the album cover, so a lot of weird 70s prog, folk and jazz, and that to be in the band you have to be able to not only play melt your face heavy, but also jazz and classical.
My recommendation for the next tune of theirs is Grand Conjuration, purely because it is a bit more riffy but also has lots of space to it. It's also the song that made me accept that there's a place in the world for death metal vocals. I'm not saying it's my favourite tune, but it's still a banger and a good representation of their overall style (at least before they went full prog and cut out the growls all together).
As ever, loving your work guys!
I’ll make that one the next Opeth tune that we do. As our resident Opeth expert, I’ll trust you to continue to guide us along the way. 🤘
In hindsight, Grand Conjuration should've been the first song Judson heard as opposed to Blackwater Park. Was like introducing him to spicy food by giving him a Ghost Pepper.
@@bumblefluff79 😂 Luckily, he was open to trying more spicy food. Slowly but surely, we’ll work him all the way up to Pepper X.
@@Greatmeasures I think another mandatory Opeth moment would be a reaction to the songs Coil/Heir Apparent. They are the two opening songs to the Watershed album, which in my opinion, is peak Opeth. The two songs also really showcase Opeth's range musically and vocally.
@@KoarTCN I came to say the same thing. Coil/Heir Apparent are iconic, the latter part might be the heaviest thing ever written in standard tuning and the proggy parts latter on might just tickle Judson's brain just right as there's some lovely keyboard/organ work.
I seen the title of this video and clicked on it right away. Opeth is probably one of my favourite prog metal bands. Off this album Still Life this song and Benighted are my favourites. Really hoping we get a new album from them this year since their last release was back in 2019.
Do the entire album. Its just a brilliant record start to finish.
right. plus other albums lol. but ya..starting off with the moor..that aspect in the song, intro and that bridge thing are jus so diffffffferent
Hessian Peel should be next. It has everything that is great about Opeth.
Came here to suggest this one.
That outtro rif is still one of my favorite most memorable Opeth riffs I reckon.
I'd love to see him react to Hessian Peel or Drapery Falls from Opeth.
Hessian Peel is intense and angry AF. Doubt he would be into it lol.
Great song from my favourite Opeth album. It would be great to see a reaction to one of Opeth's influences like Camel. Nimrodel is a great song.
Camel is good, definitely a journey in music whenever I listen to them.
Camel is great. Look up A Song For All Seasons by Renaissance.
It's basically a 70's version of the prog being made these days.
U.K is another good band (basically a chill version of Yes), Caravan is another good band from back then if you like this kind of Opeth sound.
Been waiting for this
yes Baying of the hounds would be perfect fit.
Glad to see that you are doing more opeth.! Can't go wrong with anything off Blackwater Park or ghost reveries really. The funeral portrait and the baying of the hounds are some of the best for me, some amazing riffs in those
Why don't guys check out the whole album?
To Bid you Fatewell from Opeth's Morningrise would also be a good followup, also mellow and has a nice build up.
And of course the masterpiece "Black Rose Immortal" (the track before).
So much to check out. Blackwater Park is the overall Masterpiece album beneath Ghost Reveries.
'Face of Melinda' and 'To Bid You Farewell' is probably the two most beautiful Opeth tracks in their whole discography, as far as I'm concerned.. 🤗
@@cbn6635 I would add the Damnation record to that list oc
@@Dth666Mtl0 Good call.. 👍
Love this song, great reacetion. I think that Judson may also like Porcupine Tree and Riverside.
The name "Opeth" is fictional, it originates from a book called The Sunbird written by Wilbur Smith, where Opeth is the name of a city.
According to wikipedia: "The band name came from the word Opet, which was the name of a ruined ancient city in the Wilbur Smith novel Sunbird and is translated as City of the Moon. Opeth."
R.I.P Wilbur Smith.
Go for Hours of Wealth. It's a song that Judson will enjoy and is a nice segway from this one.
yeeeesssss ;)
Nice, definitely one of my favorites from Opeth.
Oh yeah! More Opeth, you could do them forever, love them.
Holy shit ! My favorite album all time
if Judson is into concept albums i forsee Edge of Sanity's Crimson and Crimson II in the far future, i doubt he's ready for it yet tho, maybe start him off with something lighter like Echolyn - Mei, Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime or some Ayreon stuff like Human Equation
An amazing song and a great reaction
Actually one of best Opeth songs ever.
Love this band!!!
Yes! Glad to see you guys got around to this one
The Album is PERFECT! Serenity Painted Death is my favorite song of the band
All this album is a highlight, a masterpiece.
This full album is phenomenal. They are also phenomenal live.
Love your content. Longtime listener, first-time poster. Still Life is a masterpiece. Please do some more from this album. Serenity Painted Death, The Moor, Godhead's Lament, really any of the tracks. Appreciate the good stuff
Yes do the entire album!!!
Just a great band period
The Moor please!
Great Measures! If you're doing another video on Opeth, i recommend Closure from their album Damnation. This is the first "full clean voice" album they do, it's was the turn of an era. And this song is one of the most interesting ones from that album
That whole album is excellent! My favorites are Windowpane, Hope Leaves, and the instrumental Ending Credits
They’re still playing and I’m going to attend them this August 😎
You guys have to do Serenity Painted Death next by far one of my favorite opeth tracks off the same album.
Opeth - Faith In Others
It would be great choice for Great Measures. ;)
Great song, one of the few songs in music that get me emotional.
No joy would flicker in her eyes…obviously she never heard this song.
Maybe later, when it was done. :)
Brilliant song
Candlemass- bewitched
here's some opeth recs
more approachable (less death metal):
windowpane
eternal rains will come
to bid you farewell
more spicy ( 😈😈):
when
serenity painted death
deliverance
woo lets go
Got introduced to Opeth with this song. Still slaps hard. I think Harvest is a good place to go next for Opeth. Really focusing on the acoustic guitar, very airy and mesmerizing. Arguably not their best song, or their most popular, but its very recognizable once you heard it. Also, no growls.
Richard, proceed.
The name Opeth comes from the novel Sunbird. The fictional city Opet, which translates to City of the Moon
Show him something from My Arms Your Hearse either When, April Ethereal or Demon of the Fall. 'When' was the first song I ever heard of Opeth on a compilation album in 1998 and I fell in love with them from there.
The band name was taken from the Wilbur Smith novel The Sunbird, in which Opet is the name of a fictional city.
Hessian Peel or Baying of the Hounds would be my next choice for Opeth. Baying of the Hounds is also Mike Portnoys favorite Opeth track.
Fingers crossed there is a new opeth album coming out later this year.
Moon above sun below or the river from their 2014 pale communion album are well worth a listen.
I hope so. That English/Swedish one they put out last time (by accident) was hot garbage.
Steven Wilson - Drive Home
I'm sure Judson would enjoy this one. Interesting melodies, storytelling, and Guthrie Govan
Raven refusted to sing is a great album, as is Hand Cannot Erase. I'm also particularly fond of his new album Harmony Codex!
that album is beautiful
This song and Demon of the Fall are the Opeth tracks that initially made me dive deep into their catalogue and become a huge fan of their music. In some ways very different songs that really describe the spectrum of sound and music they create, but also in some ways very similar in their intentionality and story telling.
Very underated, thanks for exposing this masterpiece from Opeth..
\m/😈\m/
Still Life is easily one of the greatest albums from any genre ever recorded.
The tragic story told in the lyrics combined with the roller coaster of music makes the entire album start to finish as incredible journey of emotion.
I hope y'all react to a song by Wilderun soon! The Unimaginable Zero Summer would be a great introduction. They have some Opeth vibes but with more folk and symphonic elements.
Also, have y'all ever considered doing full album reactions ? Would love to see that, especially since Judson mentioned that he likes concept albums :) keep it up guys, one of the best reaction channels on UA-cam for sure!
Someone get this man "Silhouette" STAT!
one of my favourite songs of one of my favourite albums, hope you keep checking out Opeth! 🤘
OPETH.
The name comes from the Wilbur Smith novel The Sunbird. Opet is the name of a fictitious city.
more opeth!!!!!!! i suggest the song dirge for november from blackwater park..... I think hes gonna like it
This makes me want to see Judson's reaction to some My Dying Bride...especially my favorite track by them, Le Figlie Della Tempesta...
Gojira also great to explore lyrics and structure
Another Melinda Song is "Come away Melinda" from Uriah Heep, which is also nice with impressive Lyrics
Would love to see some Behemoth reactions :)
This is why Opeth is my favorite band, they can be Progressive, Folk, Psychedelic, Death Metal or even with Black Metal approach if you listen some songs in their first albums.
Åkerfeldt is a monster, his melodic voice is astonishing, when he's more into Rock he can be aggressive and soulful at the same time, and a beast if he unleash the guttural demonic side. Wonderful composer and an incredible guitar player.
I'm from Uruguay, so I'm very proud for Martín López and Martín Méndez too, two marvelous musicians, a very important part of Opeth, another example of the talent of López is his work with Soen, another flawless band.
They are also truly amazing live. They are just locked in, and their live sound is amazing.
The 2 "Martin's" of Uruguay by way of Sweden :p
They were part of a GREAT line-up with Peter Lindgren (and then Per Wiberg on keyboards).
Heir Apparent would be a great song to review.
Great one - Sorceress could be right up your alley too - Opeth is always a great Band for classical trained musicians to get into Metal :)
that's their weakest album IMO
@@adampopeens2728 Then that is your opinion - some might agree - others might not - have a nice day :)
This channel is awesome. I'm so glad I discovered a reaction channel with genuine reactions and criticisms. So now I shall post continuously on each video until you get him to react to Katatonia - Old Hearts Fall.
Each time you make an Opeth song, I'm begging for another, because it's one of my favorite band.
Still prefer the live perfomance of this song on Roundhouse Tapes. It's a little more up tempo. The album version drags a little IMO.
'Sörskogen - Mordet i Grottan' | This, not so known, song later transformed into an Opeth song; 'To Rid the Disease', and has some folk style lyrics to go along. If not that one, then 'Death Whispered a Lullaby', which was also featured on the TV show, Criminal Minds. :)
Opeth's still touring currently writing new material, playing some festivals over the summer
Listen to Still Life all the way through. Opeth is the name of a city on the moon in some novel that I can't name off my head.
There are so many good opeth ones...
a fair judgement by opeth can be a good song for him. i think he will like it with nice piano touches, great solos, and a mental breakdown.
I delivered 100s of pizzas to this album on a CD in my old car...
Sweet Waltzing Malissnas.
Next Opeth Suggestion: To bid you farewell
If you like dissonance you will love this álbum, is the most dissonant yet charming thing you'll ever hear
Hey guys, another Opeth, one of my favorite bands. I like Still Life but I got into them on the Deliverance / Damnation period. Deliverance would be a cool song to react to or maybe Coil - Heir Apparent or Harlequin Forest for sure as well. Lots to pick from...
It was Sweet Melissa by Allman Brothers btw
other concept albums: Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite, kamelot - epica and kamelot - The Black Halo
Would be cool to see him react to one of Opeth's more recent songs. Maybe Heart in Hand?
The doubly chromatic mediant at 12:43 was nice :D
Ghost of peridition if you havent already done that is great
hit this guy with some Spawn of Possession
Opeth came from a destroyed city called Opet in book, something like moon city?
Opeth are still together (with a new drummer) and have been touring for the past few years. Hopefully, he’s about ready to work on a new album.
I believe that the word OPETH is Phoenician referencing the MOON?!?
Mikael’s musical genius shows no bounds and has no peers, his compositions are in a league of their own, for my ear(.)
This is one of their slower, simpler tunes while still being dark & lush & heavy. This whole album is kind of where I think they found their legs & voice, and it all came together for them on this masterpiece!
I’m not sure what all you have covered of theirs, but “Watershed” (everything on it from start to finish) is an album that speaks to me. It covers so much ground and is easily one my favorite “Prog Metal” albums!
Thanks, guys! 🤘🏼
Thank you! 🤘
Watershed is fantastic!
@@Greatmeasures You’re quite welcome and keep it going……
@@chriscoote2690 I concur, emphatically! Just queue it up, sit back, and let it rip……
*From Beauty to Brvtality!*
The beginning of the _Still Life_ album is the perfect representation of what I called "Opeth Weather"; the music can start off like the idea of Fall with a mist coming through trees or a swampy bog . . . and then a heavier intro leading you in like Sirens, and then THE BRUTALITY! Their music on a whole "lures you in". Always Gothic tinged (not "Goth"), classical flurries and top tier musicianship, if its complex, rhythmic, melodic, beautiful and/or brutal. Still Life edges out Blackwater Park as my fave album of theirs.
I had known of Opeth's debut "Orchid" in 1995, only by reading about them in a trade-magazine and they were very intriguing to read about how "Progressive" they were for a Death Metal band. I wouldn't hear them till 3 albums later on "Still Life" just a couple of months before "Blackwater Park" was released, and then that did it, I was a fan for life (and went backwards into their catalogue; "My Arms, Your Hearse" is pretty awesome too). Seen them since The Blackwater Park Tour all the way to "Sorceress" (2016). Which the last 4 albums are not Death Metal, but more of a Progressive Rock/Metal like Rainbow/Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull-like. With some "Jazz/Fusion" for good measure.
They are working on their latest album with a new Drummer from the Gothic Metal band "Paradise Lost", which you also should checkout.
I guess many of us would have plenty of "Concept Albums" to suggest, from Metal to Progressive Rock and Prog Metal, but I wonder if _Richard_ would be into the more _Proggy_ stuff? But hey, you enjoy Billy Joel too!
- That was cool guys \m/.
Amazing song from an Amazing band.
You guys shoul listen to a Norwegian Avantguarde Band called ARCTURUS. Song: AD ASTRA.
That whole 'La Masquerade Infernale' album is a masterpiece! My favorite track is probably 'The Chaos Path', with the sublime, psychotic vocals of Simen Hestnæs. 👌👌
A great concept album imo is Feathers and Flesh from Avatar. They are not like Opeth but definitely have some good stuff.
Been waiting for you guys to get into them as they are really good, and I think that album is a great intro to Avatar.
Truth is.. Opeth has Great Measures
😂
FWIW If you're looking for Opeth suggestions, I generally prefer his clean voice. For sure check out the Damnation album. I also like some songs off of Heritage, namely the song Folklore, Nepenthe, Face in the snow, and Marrow of the Earth. Also like Harvest, and Benighted from earlier albums. For growling, Harlequin Forest, Lotus Eater, and Deliverance are all good!
I'd be interested to see what Judson thinks about post (prog) rock/metal. I think he might enjoy that sort of stuff.
Windowpane from the damnation album would be the best option for opeth's next reaction
