    I’m an optometrist and I’ve been waiting for someone with a large platform to make this video! All of these points I try to get across to my patients with lash extensions, particularly those who already suffer from dry eyes (but of course goes nowhere). It may sound like it’s no big deal, just use some lubricating eye drops and you’ll be fine, right up until you live every day feeling like your eyes are on fire and blinking feels like spreading gravel across your eye balls. Stay informed and safe!

      Thanks Doc! Most of Dr Drays ‘family’ listens to others as well as her, and most of us consult our drs when a claim is made. If SHES saying this then YOU are backing it up, that’s a double win of proper medical advice! I was thinking about false lashes, ease of use as I’m 65. Now? Nope! No way, au natural works! Feel free to join the family, highly informative, thorough, upbeat, truth and facts and challenging the norm, whatever that is lol❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

      I suffer from dry eyes...if ebbs and flows...sometimes in the morning I can't focus for 1/2 hr. Sometimes they are so 'goopy' (not a medical term) that it is actually gross. I've been wanting eyelash extensions and have been putting them off for this very reason so thank you for confirming this. I've always had dry eyes and I've also had Lasik (which didn't make the dry eyes worse thankfully) and I maintain the dry eye with eye drops (I use the systane balance lipid drops that are white) but I do notice my eyes feel extra sandpapery when I wear mascara. I thought maybe getting lash extensions and not wearing mascara would be better. Probably a bad idea by the sounds of it. I'm also terrified of extensions causing corneal abrasions like what Dr Dray mentioned. Ever since Lasik I've been super protective of my corneas!!!

    • @k-isfor-kristina
      @k-isfor-kristina 4 роки тому

      Tina Stout I totally get what you mean by goopy. Do you use lubricating drops first thing in the morning? I find that helps. I use 2 kinds of lubricating drop 1 after the other in the morning (one contains lipids) and I find that sets me for the whole day.

    I had eyelash extensions for five years and I had a done professionally by an artist not just someone who learned it from a book she is skillful in her tedious job. Making sure they stay clean is another thing. I had the suds up my hands real well and use that to wash my eyes. I couldn't let the shower beat down in them. I could swim in them believe it or not. When I no longer could afford it and they cost me for fill ins $75 each time . I let them just fall out naturally. I had a full healthy set of eyelashes underneaththat's how skilled she was at her job she knew exactly where to place them. I do not recommend this to anyone who cannot follow what I did to care for them they are too fragile to mess around with.

    I loved them but I got periorbital cellulitis the last time I had them. It was horrible. The doctors couldn't tell me if it was because of them or if maybe a sty caused it but said the lashes were the most likely cause. The tech was coughing and spluttering over me while doing them as well. My vision is worse in the eye that was infected, I was lucky that the other eye didn't get infected. The doctors advised me if I didn't come into hospital when I did I could've lost my vision. People don't realise the serious complications you can have from these aesthetic choices

    Hi Dr. Dray, I’m a certified eyelash extension specialist! I love that you’re informative on the serious complications that could result from eyelash extensions; however, in the 2 years of my experience and training I have never had clients who experienced these complications. It’s important for those who want to try this service is to do their research. I’ve trained with highly accredited trainers and we are all educated on how to make sure our clients do not experience these adverse reactions.
    From what I’ve learned in my training is to educate clients on aftercare. You mentioned that you cannot get your extensions wet which can lead to eye infections such as blepharitis which is although correct, but in reality it is extremely important for our clients to clean their lashes everyday to avoid serious infections like this.
    As for the ingredient cyanoacrylate is the main component of lash adhesives, it is the reason why lash extensions can last 2-3 weeks. Touching back on the topic of avoiding the extensions getting wet, we only advise this in the first 24-48 hour window after application. However, technology has changed and now we are using nano misters to seal in extensions so that clients can avoid getting them wet as short as 6 hours. After this period, it’s extremely important for cleansing of the extensions as daily as washing your face.
    You mentioned as the glue breaks down over time the extension tends to “droop” this case happens because your natural lash is growing out while the extension is still attached. Thus, removals are important during the refill process to prevent damage. However, this only happens if the technician is applying lash extensions that are not the correct diameter fit for the client’s natural lashes.
    As far as allergic reactions, it is hard to avoid adverse reactions such as eye redness, discomfort, and tearing due to cyanoacrylate which is why most technicians have adhesives made specially for sensitive clients or we encourage a patch test to ensure the safety of our clients. Most of the time when these situations occur is when the client is opening their eyes in the middle of a session or wearing contacts.
    I am really happy to see this video because everything you have mentioned is true. I am not here to hate on Dr. Dray but I am only commenting to fill in the missing information. It is everyone’s choice to decide whether they are candidates for lash extensions.
    Do not be afraid of a beauty service such as lash extensions but before getting them always do your research. Always ask where they have trained, be transparent on products, read reviews, and look for quality work.
    Lash extensions have gotten a bad rep lately due to poorly trained technicians and cheap products since this industry is growing and becoming heavily saturated.
    Have a blessed day. ❤️

    • @CarrieBiggerstaff
      @CarrieBiggerstaff 2 роки тому +10

      It has nothing to do with poorly trained technicians. It has everything to do with the simple fact that the extensions put you at risk period! What you filled in was what you do to reduce the risk but that doesn’t mean that your not at risk.

    • @erinyamada5304
      @erinyamada5304 2 роки тому +12

      @@CarrieBiggerstaff It has a lot to do with poorly trained technicians. A decent chunk of what is covered in the video can be avoided through correct procedures such as maintaining good hygiene post-procedure and also gathering suitable ingredients and materials for the customer etc. *I definitely agree that this is a risky procedure regardless* but with the proper care, this procedure isn't as harmful and dangerous as the video portrays it to be.

I think Stephanie's additional input is equally as important.

    • @CarrieBiggerstaff
      @CarrieBiggerstaff Рік тому +2

      @@erinyamada5304 didn’t you just say the same thing as I did but said it differently? I just said that you can reduce the risk but that doesn’t mean that you are not at risk. You can have a really good technician that does everything right. That doesn’t mean that you can’t be at risk for an infection. Or get an infection at all! If I get lashes…. I do them myself. I use them for a few hours and throw them in the trash. I don’t continue to wear them for several days. I can wash my face properly every day without worrying about those lashes falling off my face. Don’t say that it’s because of poorly trained professionals. It’s misleading & it just not entirely honest. It puts you at risk & especially for people who have auto-immune deficiencies? They need to know it’s a risk & something like this would probably put them at a higher risk. There’s no perfect technician that can prevent that infection for a client like that. In this video… I can’t remember if she mentioned that you should change your eye makeup every 6 months when you use these lashes but who would get the blame there if the client doesn’t do that either & gets an infection?

    • @CarrieBiggerstaff
      @CarrieBiggerstaff Рік тому +1

      @@jadesizemore3056 I totally agree with you but I guess my concern would be.. Are the technicians educating the clients about this? If you get a client that has an auto-immune deficiency. Do they educate the clients or do they just take their money?

    I had eyelash extensions for over 2 years consistently. After a few months I started to develop redness and irritation after having them applied. I liked them so much I kept getting them regardless. But after over a year I started to swell and the inflammation became so bad it looked like I was stung by a bee. I’ve done patch tests with glue that came out negative; I have no idea to this day what exactly I was allergic to (gel pads, lashes themselves, bonding), but I’m hella allergic to them now. It also took me almost five years to get their health back to pre-lash state. I’d never get them again. I’m much happier supporting my lashes naturally and opting for mascara.

    I love this video as it is informative and it's nice being able to read other people's experience for additional awareness. I've been getting lash extensions for 5 years and have had zero problems (so far). If you do get lashes done for whatever reason it may be, find a technician who knows what they're doing as Dr. Dray mentioned. Every time I take a lash extension break, my natural lashes look exactly the same as it did the first time I ever saw my technician. I wear a natural/appropriate length, keep them clean, and never wear makeup around them. Also, just because someone wears lash extensions doesn't make them vain or more vain than the person who wears make up or got a breast augmentation. Let's appreciate the information Dr. Dray offers us and be nice to one another.

      Certified lash artist here. Just an FYI, you absolutely can get your lids/ lashes wet, it is only recommended not to right after your lash appointment so your lashes have time to set. There are cleaners made to wash the lashes themselves really well with a spoolie. As for your lids, your facial wash should be fine to wash them with unless it’s super oily, then I’d recommend something without oil. Please do not fear water on your lashes! Just brush them through with a lash cleanser and pat dry if you do get them wet after the shower or washing your face :)

      You’re suppose to brush your lash extensions daily, that’s why they probably looked mangled. Usually salons will give you a little brush to take home with you so brush them.
      Don’t get things done if you’re not willing to take care of them because it end up with something like that. Lol

    I love the little bit of curl to your hair. It looks very natural! My hair gets all kind of "bendy" when it's been in an updo / bun. I love wearing my buns. I wear them when I'm up, and my hair loose at night (microfiber pillow case). I have over the booty aka "classic length" wavy/curly hair and love it. I have to say that curl to your hair really suits you! :D Personally I have never even *ever* considered lash extensions! Glue? That close to my eye? No way!

    I've tried lash extensions and I don't like them. They make my eyelashes feel heavy, itchy and uncomfortable. And my natural lashes would fall out faster and of course, take the extensions with them leaving unsightly gaps in my lashes. But I have used Latisse for years and swear by the stuff. Latisse makes my lashes grow noticeably longer and fuller. And Latisse is cheaper than the cost of constant lash extension touch-ups. But patience is required- it takes a few months to see the full results because your lashes need time to grow. But once they are all grown in they will be beautiful. If you're considering lash extensions or you have them and want to take a break I recommend Latisse. It is a "prescription" medication but many plastic surgeons sell it in their office to non-patients.

    I had lash extensions for many months but decided to not refill them anymore. I ended up with almost no natural lashes as a result of getting these extensions and I had a lot of long, healthy lashes when I got my 1st set of extensions done! Yes, even when I had them done by a "good" lash artist and filled them in regularly. I took months for my natural lashes to recover. For me, I only like the look of lash extensions the first 3 days or so after getting them done. But as soon as they started growing/falling out, I would look just weird. LOL

    The first (& last!) time I had eyelash extensions done, my eyes were burning the whole 3 weeks I had them on. Nothing helped. I tried fanning them, using eyedrops, even saw the eye doctor (who told me lash extensions were terrible for the eyes). I wanted to rip them out so badly, but didn't want to take my eyelashes with them. Unfortunately, I did lose a good amount of lashes anyway, and told myself I'd never spend that much money again for something so ridiculous and torturous lol.

    Methyl-2- cyanoacrylate?? So the lashes are basically superglued on? 🙈 No wonder people get allergies - the fumes from it causes allergy in about 5% of people, however, eyelid reactions are more common and much more severe... I was always sceptical about lash extensions, as common sense tells me a foreign object anywhere near somewhere like your eye isn’t going to end well. I had mine done for my wedding, and the same day/evening I got them done I ended up scratching them all out! Never again... my skin is really sensitive. My friend who has an eye lash business says she’s getting an influx of clients who complain about their dry eyes! I loved my lash extensions despite some discomfort I experienced. My eyes were pretty dry and photosensitive but I didn’t connect it to the eyelash extensions. Then quarantine came and I had to get them removed. After a couple of weeks my eyes felt so much better and my symptoms cleared. Now I can’t imagine going back to them at all. I rather use a nice pair of strip lashes once in a while. Demi permanent lash extensions are just constantly stressing out your eyes. I’m definitely cured from this harmful beauty trend 🙏🏻

    I’m glad I follow you, great information. I almost always to my homework before doing something like eyelash extensions. However this time I didn’t. The first time I did extensions had a little bit of irritation on one of my eyes but it went away. I really like how it opens up my eyes, wake up in the mornings and have one less thing to do. So here I am listen to your great advice because I think I am developing an allergy to the glue or the lashes themselves maybe because I’ve been doing it for about two months now. I’ve been seriously considering stopping the extensions, not getting them anymore. After watching your video I’m definitely not doing the extensions anymore. Too risky, my eyes are too precious. And the itchiness has gotten worse, the redness has gotten worse.

    Dr Dray made some excelent points in this video! She's so right, lash extensions can be very damaging to your lashes and eye ball when in the wrong hands. These are YOUR EYES we're talking about here. However, NOT ALL LASH EXTENSION SERVICES ARE BAD FOR YOUR EYE AND LASH HEALTH. This depends where you go and the level of knowledge and skill of your lash technician. I have a very in-depth video about lash extensions on my page and why they cause damage and what doesn't cause damage. YES - there is such a thing as damage-free lash application.
    I have been doing eyelash extensions for 5 years now and I encourage all my clients visit their optometrist at least yearly not only to maintain their eye health but also to check their lashes. All of my clients, including clients I've been lashing for the whole 5 years WITHOUT A BREAK told me their optometrist said their lashes and eye health were in PERFECT condition. I think it is great Dr Dray posted this video, as people need to become more aware of the risks and why its so important to do your research when choosing a lash tech.
    Much love, Emily - Bayside Lashes

    I’ve been a lash stylist for 5 years and most of my clients have not experienced adverse effects from wearing the extensions. Their natural lashes are still healthy. The only clients that have issues are those who do not adequately cleanse the lashes daily, as that contributes to buildup along the lash line and can sometimes lead to infection.
    Lash extensions are not inherently bad. Just make sure the stylist is knowledgeable and adequately trained in proper application. I’ve seen all the things that Dr. Dray is referring to in the video, and this is usually due to “bad work.”
    Take care

    I use to want them at some point but did proper research and didn’t go through with it because it just is expensive to maintain and didnt want to mess with my lashes because they are already long and found out how easy it is to get some eye issues if you don’t properly clean them even if you do clean them properly you might have an allergic reaction to the glue that they use and I didn’t wanna risk it. I’m so glad I never went through with it. I have seen so many girls loose all of their lashes due to lash extensions or have bad allergic reactions to them.

    A very good friend of mine had the eyelash extensions on for a little over a year and was going and getting them “filled”.
    She started having issues, but vanity kept her going on with the extensions, I guess. It finally took her ophthalmologist to talk some sense into her… She was actually damaging her eyes! Thankfully she chose vision over the extensions.
    Unfortunately, the extensions being on that long seriously damaged her natural lashes… Even though the girl who was doing them for her swore up and down that they would not damage her natural lashes.
    She’s had them off now for close to two years and her natural lashes have come back as much as they are going to, but not as nice as they were before (she had normal lashes... not particularly long, but not especially short either). She wishes now that she had left well enough alone.
