I suffer from this condition; didn’t realize so many people suffer from eyelid dermatitis. The older I get the linger the flare ups last. This year I had to see a dermatologist. I finally found an eyelid moisturizer that does not cause a reaction. Maelove eyecream but definitely no eye makeup. Thanks for your report. You are a super Dr.
3 years of eyelid eczema/dermatitis. Countless doctors. Diagnosed with ocular rosacea, blepharitis, contact and allergic dermatitis. Finally after 3 years, horrible wrinkles, and weeks when I would not leave the house, I insisted on patch testing which showed a very strong reaction to paraben. I thought my Cerave (and other)products were safe, but my moisturizer had paraben. If you are stuggling with this issue, get patch tested.
What do you apply now?
@@honeydiana9128 Additional patch testing revealed numerous additional allergies. The dermatologist provided a safe product list which includes various brands and specific products that are free of my allergens. Vanicream products are my go-to right now for moisturizer, body and face wash, and shampoo/conditioner.
Paraben is poison to sensitive skin.

I was battling a rash on my chin, on one cheek and on my eyelids. Nowhere did I ever hear anyone suggest it c/b nail varnish but Dr Dray, you were bang on! Once I stopped using the nail lacquer the whole mess cleared right up. Thank you so much for all the information you share in every video. You are life changing (for the better!).
I just got diagnosed with this. I've had it for decades and finally saw a dermatologist to learn what it was. So glad to have found this video. I wish I knew what my triggers are. Thank you.
I started dealing with this recently!! It was so frustrating because I kept cutting things out for a few days to see if it improved, starting with things that came in contact with my eyes directly and then working my way away, and nothing helped! I went on vacation during this, however, and it cleared up within a day which severely reduced the possibilities. Once back home I figured out it was the fragrance in scented candles 😭. Why can’t I have nice things?!?! Boooo hisss.

I bought a wax warmer for christmas and one type of wax with pine and generally heady scents really hit me bad, the second I opened it I was sneezing and my eyes just started itching. Now many therapists are switching to these essential oil burners, and my therapist thought I was crying but it was the "zen" of her oil diffuser. You cant even escape it in whole foods. Regarding avoiding all fragrances: I love haircare and the amazing scented products and the sensations that go with them, so its really tough when it comes to eliminating allergins, I think because scent triggers so many memories. I think once your eyes dont burn though you really realize that whatever you gave up either has or has a dupe which is fragrance free.
@@alexanderleatherman you have to be really careful ... you could end up with acute chemical sensitivity ... and that is no joke , as it has destroyed some people's lives .
My brother has this very bad . Certain fragrances and chemical smells can actually damage the Limbic part of the brain and it is a long road back to being healthy again .

Thank you so much for this video. Everything you share with us is of huge value. I am very thankful for that. I'm a makeup wearer and experience this every winter. As soon as it gets cold outside plus the changes of temperature and humidity through the air and the heaters, my eyes go crazy and begin to water a lot so my eyelids gets very irritated and itchy. I stopped wearing powder eyeshadows, let my eyelids rest and then switched to cream eyeshadows hoping it'd work, and it did! There is probably something in the powder eyeshadows making my eyelids react this way, especially in Winter.

My hair straightening serum was a culprit! Didn't even think about it until you mentioned contact dermatitis. The serum got on my pillow too, and I slept on it. All that blow drying probably didn't help either. Thanks Dr. Dray for helping us become wiser consumers and more aware so we can think more critically about how we care for ourselves! 💖
I’m so glad you posted this video! My eyelids were driving me nuts! I purchased the Vanicream facial cleanser and moisturizing cream and have been using it along with baby shampoo on my eyelids, and it has greatly improved. I love the Vanicream products, very soothing and non irritating. Thank you!

I think dermatitis should be her specialty. This is where her cautious judgment really fits too.👍 There some seriously bad videos out as well with young ladies throwing anything and everything at dermatitis when thus info is what they need.

i developed this problem for the first time last year. very stressful to deal. it took months to find the culprit. once i stopped using the products it went away. so far symptom free. this is very helpful info doc. thank you. you are the best🙏🧡.
Ok, I have no idea if this is what I have been dealing with, but I am going to use the process of elimination with a few "suspects" to see if it helps. I think my problem started shortly after I began using an eye cream (about a year ago), so that'll be the first thing I eliminate. Thanks for everything, you're the best! ❤️
So helpful, I get dematitis (among other things) when I eat dairy so I cut it out of my diet. It really improved my skin but then all of a sudden I started getting dermatitis around my eyes and it has been driving me crazy cause I didn't know why. This video has made me think of a few non-food changes I have made that maybe the cause. Gives me hope I can figure it out.

I experienced this right before and after menopause. Mine was from mica. Can't use it on my eyes or lips. Sad for me because I loved my glittery/ shimmery shadows and glosses.
I played Dr for myself by washing brushes, eliminating old make up and reading ingredients like crazy.
My cheeks can tolerate a bit of shimmer, but like you suggested Dr. Dray, I don't touch my eyes.thanks for this. You're a doll

I just listened to your Q&A on rosacea, and for the first time saw "ocular" rosacea. I have dry eyes and frequent blepharitis and lacrimal gland obstructions and conjunctivitis. I have chronically had swollen eyelids with a yellow rim around the outer eyelid adjacent to my lashes, and next to that a red/purple rim ( also on the outer lid) of tiny vessels. I have been told my eye and eyelid irritations are secondary to seasonal or external "allergies". I have never had information about how mites and the parasites within mites, could be the specific allergen affecting my eyes (as well as my cheeks=rosacea). I am making an appointment with a dermatologist asap. Thank you; your are a service to the public and your dermatology colleagues that benefit from increased appointments, from your fan base.
Lots of great info! Thanks! I have flaky eyelids constantly! I think is my retin a is migrating to my eyelids while I sleep. I don’t place it on my eyelids, but it still gets on them. Also beware of laundry detergents - especially on bed sheets. I have to be super careful with laundry detergents with lots of dyes and perfumes. I use very little detergent in my washing machine and try to buy the “free and clear” kind. The washing machine effectively cleans the items without too much detergent needed anyway.
Yeah the retin-a can migrate to lid area
Used to happen to me too with my Retin A. One tip from Dr Dray that works is to use vaseline on the sensitive areas like eyelids, outer corner of eyes, and nasal folds before using the Retin A.
Hi DrDray, this is a high value content, thank you. I just realized that, in addition to my hands, what could definetly transfer some dust or other allergens to my eyelid could be my bangs!
@1:45 I talked to my Dr. just yesterday about this ongoing problem. I was given Tobradex for it about 2 years but only used it sparingly. Glad to see this video and will try to find out what is causing it.
Hello Dr. Dray. Extremely interesting topic. A close friend suffered from eyelid dermatitis for close to a year. Bottom line the culprit turned out to be formaldehyde. It took well over a month to start clearing up once eliminated.

:) formaldehyde releasing preservatives are increasingly common allergens
@@k.ambriz9789 Unfortunately formaldehyde is an ingredient found in many cosmetic and skin care products also I believe contact lense solutions. It is listed and known by multiple chemical names. Methanal, formanil (sp?) are two that I recall. Hence it is quite difficult to recognize.
Thanks for the info! I’ve always been told that patch testing isn’t very effective for eyelid dermatitis. I’m going to find someone that will give it a try.
Literally woke up yesterday with what I guess is a small blepharitis spot on my lower lash line. I had this happen once before a few years ago. It feels tender but thankfully they go away pretty quickly with gentle qtip cleaning and warm compresses. I figured I need to change my mascara. Alternately this winter I was dealing with some eczema (I suppose) on my eyelids. I *think* when I was putting my moisturizer on after differin that I was moving some of the differin onto my lids. I never considered it could be something like my shampoo. This video was VERY informative and interesting. I rarely think about my eyes in relation to my beauty products if I’m not putting that thing directly onto my eyes. I really appreciate it.

I just started using benzoyl peroxide again after stopping for a while, and my right eye has been so swollen and puffy! I think I might be getting the acne treatment a little too close to my eyes. Thank u doctor dray!!

I went through this three years ago. I was fragrance free with skin products, but not rinse off. It was my shampoo and conditioner, which listed fragrance and linalool in the ingredients. The eczema would come and go, and I was using the shampoo a couple of times a week, so it took me awhile to figure it out. I also have hay fever, and sinus problems with fragrance and pollen. Thankfully pollen hasn’t given me eczema, at least not yet! Thanks so much for the info on this subject, it’s really needed.
yeah linalool is a problem...it oxidizes and can be even more irritating

@@aidal4893 two weeks ago it was kinda starting to get bad again but i've given up on doctors by now so i just went to the pharmacy/drug store idk how u call it and bought aerius, it's an anti histaminic(?), and took it twice everyday until I finished the box and I guess it helped. I've also been hydrating my face twice everyday and applying a specific cream on the eyelids to help soothe the area, even if it's normal at the time. hope this helps somehow and sorry for the messy answer x)
Apparently I have blepharitis on my eyelids and seborrheic dermatitis on my eyebrows, cheeks, nose, chin and scalp. Idk what to do honestly. I suppose I should go to a dermatologist?

This started happening to me last year. All of my eye makeup, no matter what brand is irritating my eyes. I've been laying off of using it as much as possible but there's something else also irritating them, but I haven't figured it out yet.Thanks for this video, it's given some ideas of other products I can try eliminating.

@@swetarawal7136 I think I was referring to my eyeliner and mascara which are still irritating. Also, eyelash glue makes my eyes water and itch. I put concealer on my eyelids to help with the eyeshadow irritation. I use Cerve moisturizes and they don't bother my eyes.

My eyelids are finally healing within 2-3 days of removing all skincare from them and only using vaseline. What a huge relief!
I had just assumed it had to be my tretinoin irritating them, but your video made me question the new cleansers moisturisers and sunscreens I started around the same time as tret. Duhh!
Dr Dray I had such a bad case of eyelid dermatitis also excema on my face and neck.My eyelids were cracked and bled and was very painful. I had it for a year . I had both contact and allergic. Had to go on cellcept terrible side effect along with shots of steroids. I did have a slight fragrance allergy. Threw away all makeup and facewash anything with fragrance. Cerave products saved me after it cleard up along with vanicream.Thanks Dr Dray love all your videos!🤗

I've been suffering with eyelid and under eye dermatitis off and on for years and have yet to find the cause. So frustrating! Thank you for suggesting the patch test, I'm going to ask my dermatologist about that. Each bout leaves me with deeper lines and darker skin under the eyes, which I've become very self conscious of. I'm in my 30s but have the under eyes of someone in their 80s!

@@DrDrayzdaydo you know anything about GrenzCine Eye? My dermatologist suggested trying it since I'm nervous about fillers. It's supposed to help thicken the skin around the eye. It's almost $200 though! But if it works then it's cheaper than fillers with less risk.

Thanks again for your knowledgable info! I do have a spot on one of my eyes that I occasionally deal with. It is probably do to the products that I put on them. It is just so difficult to figure what the exact culprit that is causing it though.

I just recently developed eyelids dermatitis. I thought they were just regular dry patches so I slather on my moisturizer & even squalane oil but nothing worked and they stung the areas really badly. Then I decided to use the Avene tolerance emulsion because it's supposed to be good for eczema and sensitive skin and it work! It's the only cream I am currently using on the affected areas and they're getting much better now.

Dr. Dray - I used a cortisone that was too strong on my eyelid and it caused some thinning of my skin which is noticeable. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Your video was super informative, thank you Dr. Gray! I suspect I have this and I have been finding it difficult to find an appointment with dermatologist anytime soon. I was wondering if this could spread to other places like corners of lips and neck?
I have epithelial basement membrane dystrophy with reoccurring corneal erosions along with dry eyes. It can be a real balacing act trying to keep both eyes and eyelids happy. I have a pretty good routine now to keep everything under control but really can take awhile to figure it all out.
Really great video! I have been struggling with this and am pretty sure it is something in my eye makeup. Been trying to figure it out on my own, but it is so difficult. Will try to find a dermatologist I can see
I had eyelid dermatitis & to this day I have no idea what causes it. My guess it’s an airborne allergen. Went to a dermatologist who prescribed me a $90 cream. So I took matters in my own hands. I found that the Aveeno Eczema Cream was the only thing that would calm & moisturize my irritated and bone dry eyelids. Today, I use whatever products I use for my face that is appropriate for my eyes; products that will strengthen the skin barrier while hydrating & moisturizing my eyes. And I haven’t had it in over a year! It usually pops up when I travel, due to climate changes I guess.
Does it work for sensitive skin

Jennifer Gongora What products did you use? I currently have contact dermatitis and my dermatologist recently prescribed me Desonide and so far it’s been great but I want something that will help get rid of it completely !

I am currently going through a reaction right now from Maybelline Great lash mascara (which I have used regularly in the past) and my eyes didn't become irritated until I washed it off... I was reading about the product and straight away comes up a study/article of shellac being the ingredient in the product that people were having a reactions to... Now I have puffy eyelids that look like they've been stung by bees
Chanelle Vivanco: I just went through skin patch testing this past week and one of the allergens I tested positive for was shellac. I will definitely read the ingredients of any mascara I consider using to make sure they don’t contain shellac.
So glad you did this video! I found out i had eyelid dermatitis over the summer(due to an eyelid primer, and also sometimes is irritated by some eyeshadows)! And then just recently cold induced hives 🤧

And across your video trying to figure out why my eyelid is irritated and won’t go away. Then the 💡 when off!!! Eye drops!!! Went to my optometrist for new glasses, complaining bout my dry eyes and he recommended lubricating eye drops and I just realized my eye started reacting since I have been using them! Thank you!!!
Hello! I'm a little late for this video but I'm so glad I found it 'cause I am dealing (again) with what appears to be dermatitis in my eyelids. Is it possible that tretinoin caused this for me this time around? I used a tiny bit a couple of times in my eyelids and I stopped when I noticed it was irritating my eyelids, and after the irritation "left" I noticed a few days later that a flare-up of this dermatitis was popping up. Can't seem to get rid of it and some tiny spots of the same rash are appearing in other parts of my face.

I got this from a few shades in the James Charles X Morphe eyeshadow pallet. Never occured before in my life until I used a shadow with a different metal than what's in most shimmery shadows. I noticed it went away when I avoided those colors.
THANK YOU for this video. This is exactly what I have that makes me break out into an eye infection if I put mascara on! I will see my dr and tell her I need a patch test and maybe I can someday wear mascara again so I don't have to go out in public with eyes like a bunny! YAY!
I started getting eczema or maybe it was severe dryness/flaking and irritation with some burning in my eyes from putting on them multiple purely fragrance free mineral sunscreens. Once I went with the Colorescience 3 in 1 sunscreen my eyelids got much better! unfortunately it's quite expensive but I heard from you it lasts like almost a year!

Only reason I ask is I’ve noticed that after drinking or consuming any dairy product, I get this reaction 12 hours or so later.

I always loved dying my hair and expensive shampoos and conditioners and no matter switching to CeraVe, some hair lines have caused horrible reccurences of this. I truly think this is caused by the wrong shampoos and conditioners because most conditioners are instructed to be left on during washing the body, so when the conditioner is rinsed off it ruins the effects of the face wash. My final step (the hardest for me) will be switching to a good clean shampoo and conditioner. Can you recommend one Dr. Dray?
is rose salve good for the dry eyelids? I was on Accutane and my eyelids have been getting drier . I finally finished the treatment four weeks ago but my eyelids are very dry and cracked
Wow, I had this on my right eyelid only for the entire winter. It peeled and was painful. It really concerned me because I have had blepharoplasty and I do NOT want that fragile skin damaged again. It was painful and peeling. I ended up using almond oil on that area only, it seemed to help. I’m avoiding eye makeup just now, which I hate doing. This is my feeling only, but I would definitely avoid steroid creams on the eye area. Eyelash curlers can cause this problem? Who knew? I just found this channel, what a font of information!
I’m so glad I found this video. I have eyelid dermatitis starting to flare up. We behind a farm and every time around this year near harvest my skin starts acting up. Once it starts flaring up it takes me months to get it to go away. I started using CeraVe AM & PM and have ditched anything with fragrance in it.

Just made the connection that the Neutrogena acne body wash I used on my face and let set on my face in the shower may have caused my eye issue. Or it may be that I just died my hair. Either way, I hope it goes away soon! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 💙

Wow I have this. And I have allergies too (year round) so my eyes are always feeling irritated. The eye drops I use irritate the skin around my eyes and if I don’t use the eye drops my eyes are soooo itchy. I can never win 😭

Pollen causes me problems with my eyelids.
Eating too much dairy also causes a bad rash on my eyelids. Perhaps you could comment on food allergies?
This happened to me upper n lower lids from using retinol and lactic acid products around the eyes. Used your advice from an earlier video and cerave in the tub healed it in about a week!

Joys of this issue. Just finished 3 day OTC cortisone for my inflamed eyelid and under eye eczema. It went away. Applied 3 times a day. Only use cereve spf 30 and Nivea. Don’t wear make up, no perfume, just my body. Skin issues been my life. Just one more thing. But during winter I do cut down on face washing. Just warm water. It helps until spring.
I tried the eyelash growing serums and applied them too often I think because I developed a shedding and peeling of skin all over the eyelid along with a welting effect so I have stopped using them and finally it’s cleared up. I did use Cerave eye cream which took about two weeks to clear up.
