Hearing about your foot was like when I heard about Stephen King getting hit by a car before he finished The Dark Tower story. I was so worried we would never get to read the end. He bounced back, and so did you. I'm glad you're creating again. Best of luck to you.
I enjoy that this video eschews trying to have Dean tell us about this neighborhood and instead lets the viewer just experience it themselves via the cinematography and the use of interviews. It's incredibly effective and for a neighborhood like The Strip it feels very on point. I do wish we got the bike test back though!
One of the most deceptively simple neighborhoods in the city. And you nailed it by starting with a recent development/planning meeting for the strip. Nicely done!
@dean bog, I had asked you in April of 2020 if you wanted to do a documentary of the fire and rebuilding of my father-in-law’s store. I had no idea you went there. Thanks!
Dean always hitting it out of the park. Such well done videos. I used to live in Pittsburgh and these videos really make me so nostalgic. I could move tomorrow!
I remember when back in 88, that jobs were few and far between. So, I moved away. But I always come back and still hold the memories of the Pittsburgh I grew up in. And yes there are shadows of when. That " Steel Mills " ran all night long as to light up the sky. The sounds of work being done. To be from Pittsburgh is to know why We who are from Pittsburgh is someplace Special.
My heart is full seeing the Sunseris, the Wholeys and the Stamoolis families still there. When my Dad first took me to the Strip 70-some years ago, was the first time I met them. Our neighborhoods are all about family and tradition. The generation Z folks and the techies are moving to Pittsburgh and are giving new life to the 'burgh while embracing who we are. Thanks, Dean, for the great work that you do.
We love the Strip District! My husband and I lived in Crafton for almost 2 years and went to the Strip as much as possible. Pittsburgh is in our hearts. That said I had to pause the video in shock during the interview with the VP of Wholeys - we have ABSOLUTELY purchased Orange Juice from him while he was working! That was so cool to see as we thought he was just another employee!
I used to live downtown (until 2021). I walked down to the Strip District once or twice a week for food, groceries, etc., and seeing all these shots and people has me all teary-eyed. Hell, my husband even got me a poem from the poet down there.
The Strip District is much different now than when I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 50s and 60s. I would make a priority to visit my there if I ever go back again!
Dean, I hope you know how much these videos are appreciated. Your videos make me So Happy & Homesick! 🥹 To see the Wholeys included in this video brings me so much joy!! They are a core memory of my childhood. But Yeah, SO GLAD TO HAVE YOU AND YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEOS BACK!! Love & Respect from a Pittsburgh native in Alabama 🥹🫶🏽🥂
You are a literal cinematic genius. I was so excited to see you were making videos again. I can't wait to see what else you will come up with. Keep up the great work and God bless. Thank you sir.
I am from Pittsburgh and moved away for work in January 2020. Watching your videos over the past couple years have brought me comfort and make me feel like I am home experiencing the unique communities and culture all over again! Thank you!
6:32 Nice Pickett jersey, mark. Love me the Strip. Used to stop at a Vietnamese food stall every Saturday for chicken on a stick. It was tremendous. LGP.
You are a natural born artist. I feel like I am watching a short documentary done by a group of profficinal people,I enjoy so much every video by you. Thanks for the comeback. I lived in Pittsburgh for 4 years in the early 90's now I am overseas in Saudi. I'll be back one day for sure.
I discovered your channel a couple of days ago. I guess I was missing Pittsburgh. I grew up there. I have not been back since I moved to the west coast in 1965. I've ducked all my High School reunions (Bethel Park HS - class of 63). I'm glad to see so much recognizable turf. I used to take the Streetcar downtown for 35 cents. Too bad about the streetcars. Thank you for your beautiful work!
Your videos shaped my view of Pittsburgh before I moved here, and now continue to reframe the specialness of this city as I live here. Thanks for what you do! Can't wait for you to make a video about the south side slopes (another quirky but soulful neighborhood)
Dean your cinematography is unmatched. I really do miss your narration, though. It pulls the documentary together, making it more cohesive. Consider bringing it back? I miss your voice!
the boom in the strip is insane. when i was kid, it was so different than what it is now. and i'm sure my grandparents have completely different recollections.
this series is so insanely good glad to see its still going after all these years. if you ever run out of areas id love to see it come to philly to see the contrast of the two rival cities. since philly is just as wildly distinct like pitts but the way history and feel is so diffrent
Thanks for this masterpiece. You are a fine story teller. Pittsburgh has its own Ken Burns. If you could get the opportunity , you would do very well on a national stage.
I've been thinking about moving to Pittsburgh for the last couple years now. I need to get out of Florida because it's too hot, flat, and expensive. PGH sounds like a great place to be for a work from home person, like myself.
i’m so happy to see that Dean Bog is back at it again. I can’t wait to return to Pittsburgh and continue experiencing all the goodness it has to offer.
I have two inflatable kayaks, two paddles, and an idea that we should do an Allegheny River video. I'm working on a Colorado trail trip video right now.
I think your best one yet. Your editing, storytelling and use of B-roll seems to get better and better with each video. The production quality is just top notch, well done
Really high quality video! I love the strip district... one of my two favorite places in the city. Pennsylvania Macaroni Co., Lotus, the kimchi from Sambok, the tortillas from Reyna's. Shopping at a place like target crushes my soul, but shopping in the strip district is truly a treat.
When I lived near Pittsburgh, I never really went to the Strip District. Hung out other places. Now that I don't live near Pittsburgh, I visit the Strip every time we're in town. I wish I lived down in that area so I could hang out all the time.
Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities. It's beauty, authenticity and spirit are among the 'burgh's best attributes. I hope it remains as true to it's roots as it possibly can and doesn’t succumb to the blandness of gentrification.
Seeing the planning meeting and the other stores that are trying to keep the old feel of the strip is very interesting. I hope they do not drive out the vendors that make that place so special in favor of building condos and office buildings. I’ve been seeing that a lot lately in big cities and I hope they have the foresight to not wipe away the things that make Pittsburgh special.
DEAN, you came into Salems Market & Grill some years ago and filmed, and interviewed me. I was on the front side serving that day.... Is there any way I can see that footage?
I wish you would explain why it is called “the strip”. People who don’t know or aren’t from the ‘burgh, think it has something to do with naked ladies.
Unlike some of his other PGH neighborhood sketches that have a certain palette of revelation, this is more of a collage. Not for any other reason than he fact that the Strip growth is so transitional. Though many of the heritage businesses can and will survive the transformation, who they cater to has already been turned over from the Yinzers and Babushka Mamas to the Zillennials and New Techies. That is what is happening in much of Pittsburgh, and it is not a bad thing per se -- just inevitable.
Hey Dean, you think you could meet up with the Zambellis and showcase the 4th of July fireworks? Pittsburgh Fireworks are top tier!! In the words of the late great Nate Dogg “Nobody Does It Better”
Dean Bog, We hope you are well. We host a podcast in Pittsburgh at our media studio, and would love to have you as a guest. We sent you a message on your instagram. Hope to hear from you soon!
I’m surprised you didn’t visit Luckys. The Real Luck Cafe is smack up against that Wholeys building that’s being torn down. It’s one of the oldest gay bars in the city.
I work at a hotel and my favorite thing is telling tourists to go down to the Strip. “Yeah, just over the hill, you wanna go down the Strip, it’s great!” “The STRIP?!” “Yeah, the Strip District! It’s real fun.” And that doesn’t clarify anything for them, really, so they have to go check it out themselves. Some people honest to god think it’s our red light district 😂 “The STRIPPING district?” “No, just the Strip.”
Hey all, I’m in Pittsburgh doing reconnaissance for a potential move. Any suggestions for neighborhoods? Looking for walkable, bike-able, affordable, good food options,……We’re in our late sixties, left leaning, healthy active lifestyle,…. I’m a musician,photographer,videographer,…..my wife is a yoga instructor. A bit of a yard would be nice as we have a dog and would like the option for a place to sit outside with a little privacy. I’m staying in Bloomfield and plan on walking all day toward Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, the parks,…..maybe drive around later in the day a bit farther out. I cruised The Mexican War Streets last night and fell in love, but no way can we afford to live there. I’d preesh any suggestions, thanks!
I don't think Dean has covered it yet, but Friendship is a very underrated neighborhood in the city. Pretty quiet itself, but easy walks to neighborhoods like Shadyside and East Liberty, where you can find a decent mix of food, coffee, and libations.
@@andrewmarshall8811 Thanks, yeah my AirBnB was just on the edge Bloomfield next to Friendship. I walked from there all over Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, East Liberty, Frick, Schenley......Plenty to choose from!
I live in the Brookline neighborhood. I would say it's one of the more affordable neighborhoods. Not as cool as Shadyside, Squirrel Hill but still has a lot offer.
Please come back and do more videos. I enjoyed them.
I sense a real stylistic shift with this video. It feels more finely crafted. But, I missed having Dean as our tour guide.
Every time Dean drops a video I feel like moving to Pittsburgh.

Great work, Mr. Bog. FRom a native Pittsburgher, now living in Moscow, Russia. Misssing home!!!
Now that I've left Pittsburgh I enjoy these videos even more - brings back so many memories in every neighborhood you cover.
Os a car needed in Pittsburgh to get around for a week? I don't drive. Are there public transportation options? Thanks in advance
@@Mongoose-ct6us depending where you are in the city, for the most part youll be fine! Theres public buses and the trolley which is super convenient.
