I just got a job offer in Pittsburgh. I’m from Michigan and have never lived in a city of this size. I was nervous about taking it. Still am.
This video series, however, has made me excited about the city. Not just for the job opportunities. Not just for the education opportunities. For the vibe, aesthetic, and culture you’re able to shine a light on.
    I’m taking the job.

Dean, I am from Pittsburgh and have lived in Berlin for the past 34 years. I stumbled on this video quite by accident. I know Jörg from Berlin and was BLOWN AWAY to see him in this vid. He has talked for several years about the Mt. Oliver "Echt" project. Can't wait to hit Pittsburgh in July and see the church. Love the Neighborhood videos. Keep up the good work !

Good video! I've lived in Mt. Oliver my entire life... I wish I was in it! I think Mt Oliver is trying very hard to improve right now. They've had nice events going on on brownsville rd.
    Some problems with the video....
There are 2 parks! There's one on Church Ave. I see more ppl there than transverse. There's 3 if you count the park on bausman.
Not looking for trouble you're not going to find it? Not true. Its very possible to get jumped here. My mom had been jumped and my brother chased. Also he was on break from work when rite aid had its windows shot out. Luckily he wasn't there, but nearby and ran all the way home.
You hear gunshots around 3am at least once a week. I literally heard at least 10 shots tonight around 4am.
Addiction is a HUGE problem. At least in my experience, because I lived with an addict I know how many there are.
Since I've been living here all my life I don't mind pointing out that its far from perfect and we should definitely not undermine the struggle of living here. Anyone who says otherwise isn't paying attention. But I think with the right leadership and group effort it can be improved. But please don't pretend its great!

My Grandparents had a shop on Brownsville Road from that late 1930's to through the 70's. While it is sad to see how depressed the neighborhood is, it was nice to see folks tat are trying to bring business and reclaiming abandoned properties to make living spaces.

David O I remember a fur company, but not the name of it. I remember a sign that stated use us for storage of your fine furs...something of that effect. I remember when they built the new post office. The Windmill deli, Mike’s Lunch, Brown & Green men’s store, 5&10, Enlowe’s shoes, Kuhlman’s bakery, korbles meats, Kramer’s pharmacy. Triangle Cafe. Even Carrick and Brentwood are bad areas these days.

Mark Rebholz when my grandfather bought the building he dug out the cold storage room underground. It seemed huge to me as a young kid and was always very cool. There was a painted ad on side of the building that talked about scientific storage or something like that.

Do a Carrick one, if you already did I can't find it. Good job on the videos brotha. There's a lot of history in Carrick, there is a very small grave yard in the middle of Carrick at the top of Copperfield St. Where the 2nd mayor of the city is buried. And all the tombstones are ancient. Check it out.

My mother in law grew up in Mt Oliver, born there in 1924. I’ve heard a Lostetter relative painted the ceiling of a church there, but no idea which one. She was deeply ashamed of being from the wrong side of the tracks. Her husband was from Brentwood. His athletic records stood unbeaten for decades. At her 50th Brentwood high school class reunion, the Brentwood kid’s apologized for snubbing the Mt Oliver kids. It meant a lot to her.

Brookline in the future? It's an interesting place (I moved here from Shadyside). The forgotten city limit neighborhood that lost the Trolley and now only has 1 bus and no Connectcard - Port Authority Kiosk (but has Pitaland and Las Palmas #1, Fiori's, bakeries, cafes, and other treasures!). I enjoyed your episode on our neighbor, Dormont!

Grew up in Mt. Oliver on Penn Ave. in the early 60s when it was a thriving neighborhood. You could find everything you wanted on Brownsville Rd. Now it's rusted out and boarded up with little to no hope of ever coming back. Drove through a few years ago and couldn't believe the decay and hopelessness I saw.

Another great video. You bring out the best in people, they open up to you. I love the woman at the laundromat. So wise. I grew up in Pittsburgh, left at age 18 in 1981. As I near retirement age I’m considering returning. These videos help with that decision. Also, growing up there as a child, all the different neighborhoods were a bit confusing how they all connect. I grew up near MO 70’s 80’ s . It was a vibrant area . Resteraunts several grocery stores , record stores if you count gc Murphy. Coury furnture was great. Too many to mention the sidewalks would be packed on Saturday afternoon. The hard working families either moved or parents passed on. They turned to rentals. Eventually rundown. This is the result. Yes this is a dangerous place! It needs a major enama, start with the dope slingers.

The car-tracking drone shot made me chuckle! Reminded me of the taxi scene from Zodiac that the Nerdwriter mentioned in his video about David Fincher (I'm guessing you've seen it 😛)
This is another great video with some awesome interviews, shots, cuts, music! I think I'd like to see a bit more breadth or "general" info about the neighborhood, but I understand the breadth/depth choice you made, and the detail you go into gives the stories purpose and significance vs surface general info. Keep it up man... these vids make me feel proud of my city.
And though I'd love thinking that the many neighborhoods that have "dangerous" stereotypes are being misrepresented, I think the existence of higher than average crime in a given neighborhood should be acknowledged and investigated for some causes and solutions (I know that's ultra complex and hard to do in the 3 min you might have to devote to that). It's nice to be optimistic, but I think it approaches a disservice to the neighborhood and viewers to not call attention to neighborhoods that need change/help. (I don't have any personal experience with crime in any of the neighborhoods you've covered, but over-optimism can sometimes be a problematic lens to view things). Just my thoughts!

Mt Oliver is about 1 mile by 1 mile.
That said the number of homicides that happens here places it on the per capita list of worst places some years.
Google "Mt Oliver shooting" and then know it's a square mile and then you'll understand just how bad this area is.....

Once again thank you for your video I think you show the best perspective on Pittsburgh hands down! I wish I could donate to your cause but I just don't have the money just like everyone else were struggling at the moment

.....As a N Y'er I never found this place scary.....I used to drive from where I lived in Brookline to visit my fiance's cousins there.....I kinda reminded me of Mt. Vernon in Westchester co. (Above NYC)

You are one crazy ass person and I like it. Haha
The lady from Uganda speaks volumes of truth. Her perception of American youth is spot on.

This is my neighborhood. It has a bad reputation for sure but its mostly undeserved. After living here for a few years I've finally started to get out more and it's a really nice community. There's tons of great people, With new people and businesses moving in so get ready for the rebound.

Met the coolest people and saw the nearest places when I lived in East Liberty- it’d be wild to see you do a video there!

Mt Olive is NOT part of South Side but is a member of South Pittsburgh or the Hill Top Communities
