@rachelleklemunes5493 That’s only part of it. Having lived in the Pittsburgh area during different times in my life I can say there is more to the city and the people than just "a view". I just wanted to note that for people who haven't been to Pittsburgh so they can have a chance to experience the breathtaking view provided when entering the city from the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
@@Pghyinzer Born and raised in Pittsburgh, I have lived here for 63 years. I know it is taboo to put down the 'Steel City,' but I'm too old to sugarcoat. @rachelleklemunes5493 there is much truth to what you say. But that can be said about most any city. The problem is, especially now, that there are very few areas in this country that is tolerant of differences and have a functional infrastructure. I hope you find your Utopia someday.
No, one just needs to know where to go, by thinking of more than 3 blocks at a time. I can leave my house in Squirrel Hill South (overlooking the Mon) and make it to 40th & Butler in 10-15 minutes. I’ll go 376 W to cross the Ft. Duquesne Bridge, then 279 N to Rt 28 N. Cross the 40th Street Bridge and I’m there.

Ive lived here for almost 40 years. This video is spot on. Let me just emphasize traffic/road construction even outside of the tunnels is constant an so annoying. Also, property taxes especially school taxes are high...think $6k/yr on an assessed value of $240k. On the plus side..i feel safe almost anywhere i go in the suburbs.
When I lived in Pittsburgh, I didn't like the feeling that everything was aging - and not in a quaint way - it felt somewhat dreary. The number one thing I REALLY disliked was all the one-ways. It seemed that I rarely could come home the way that I went - anywhere :-) and roads were poorly marked.
My partner is from Pittsburgh and I asked him why does everything look so sad and gray? He said Pittsburgh is big for keeping its history. That wasn’t a good enough reason for me. And the one ways drove me crazy. I absolutely hated driving there.
There aren't any new homes or buildings being built. There is no financial incentive and no money to build new homes or build new structures. That's why it looks sick and dying@@daclass1985
Pittsburgh is old, we were established in the 1700's. Our roads were once carriage paths, so yeah, some are narrow. It's different from, say, Phoenix where the roads were designed with automobiles in mind. I've lived here all my life, it's not a big problem.
i love it here, moved here in 2012, use to live 45 min south of San Francisco, my allergies were worse in Calif., PRO's less expensive, nice people, not crowded, beautiful all year round beautiful hills, creeks, waterfalls, trees, wildlife, deer, owls, hawks, birds, beaver, muskrat, coyote, i saw a badger once, yes a badger on Coraopolis Rd in Coraopolis heading to McKees Rocks you have to drive slow and watch out for deer, i put an electronic deer whistle that chirps it has on/off button, saved me about 8 times from hitting deer, etc... CONS __POTHOLES, TAILGATERS, BAD DRIVERS, summer can be hot and humid, winter can be dreary and cold, light snow here/there, heavy snow once in awhile, but when it warms up and melts, it is a muddy mess. Rains alot which can be cold and damp, can be very foggy in the morning, esp. if you live near a river. Weather in winter is schizophrenic, one day it is 65 and nice, next day snows, or it snows, then 2 days later it is 80 degrees (true story), so you cant put all your summer clothes away or winter, you have to keep a little bit of both out. If you are not use to snow, you will have to buy ALL SEASON TIRES every 2 - 3 yrs, the tires dont last long on the curvery/hilly roads around here, alot of wear and tear. Or put on snow tires every November - April then take them off and put regular tires back on, Winter Proof house after Halloween. ___ If i won the lotto and could live anywhere in the world, i would stay here.
Thanks for the info! FYI That microphone needs the Blue label to be pointed at your mouth, and in cardiod (the heart shape) mode is the most common. It doesn't pick up in all directions evenly.
The worst part about the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse is that that bridge was built in 1970, BY FAR not close to the oldest bridge in town. Many date to the 1920s and 1930s, Hell the Smithfield Street Bridge is from the '80s... The 1880s!
In the old days bridges were made of good old American steel… nowadays it the cheap Chinese sh*t … that’s why they collapse now… not to mention DIE hiring practices not hiring the best qualified person!
The Smithfield Street Bridge is a lovely old bridge built with a lenticular truss, one of a very few surviving. It's been very well taken care of and it's beautiful, painted in Victorian Era colors and nicely lit. Seen from the restaurants in Station Square, it's a point of pride for Pittsburgers. P.S. The bridge has been designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, and a National Historic Landmark.
i will say yes the weather is rainy and gloomy sometimes which can be a good thing depending on how you look at it i know last year a lot of the county did not get rain and was in a drought. and cooler hear to with the sea levels rising a lot of the major Citys like new york and some state will totaly go under water in are life time yes Pittsburgh is not prefect. i like pittsburgh bin living i the outskirts for a long time
One huge thing is that most houses are built over old mine shafts. If you think yours isn't, you'll be surprised by searching the web. Penn State has a great site for searching old maps that overlay Google Earth to see where they are. The mine insurance is very cheap through the state of PA. Good luck 👍
If I told you, I am an Algerian who fell in love with this City because of a movie, yes it was a movie lol. And if you ask me about whether I choose sunny and warm, or cloudy rainy icy place, I'll say grey is the the best color there is. I was expecting something like crimes level, or unfriendly people, thank God, I am still in love with Pittsburgh
Philadelphia transfer tax is 4.278%, so be happy with the 3% transfer tax in Pittsburgh. (Seriously, in my opinion, both transfer taxes are way too high).
Pittsburgh is not always cloudy and raining! And no one is constantly wearing Pittsburgh sports gear! Also there are things to do laut at night places close at 3am
Wow after seeing this video you have convinced me to move away from Pittsburgh. I have lived here my whole life and never realized how bad we are. Thanks to you I'm ready to leave after 76 years. This is not the first video of yours that I have seen and from what I see you are the last person I want to sell my city. It's time to get serious and say that Pittsburgh is a great place to live. I hope I can spend many more years in this city. Pittsburgh has it's issues just like every other city, but overall it's a great place. If someone wants to come here from somewhere else we will welcome you with open arms.
I moved to pittsburgh two years ago and its been fantastic. Only complaint is the squirrel hill tunnel traffic when coming back from road tripping eastward. They gray day count being higher than seattle is real!
@@livinginpittsburghpennsylvania Texas. Cost of living here is not much different than there but here there is snowboarding and affordable homes and that sealed the deal.
Also, no matter what your favorite sports team is, or how bad the Steelers are that particular year, you HAVE to say you are a rabid Steelers fan. Being in Pittsburgh and NOT being a Steelers fan is equivalent to visiting the Vatican and saying that you're an atheist. You CAN talk smack against the Pirates though, cause that's been a Pittsburgh tradition since the mid 80's.
@@DizziNY1 I kind of said it tongue-in-cheek, but in all seriousness, some of the Steelers insanity around here during football season is really crazy. Our former mayor was named Luke Ravenstahl and when the Steelers were playing the Ravens in the playoffs, they actually had a news conference where in a ceremonial presentation, Luke changed his name to Luke Steelerstahl. True story! Look it up :)
Stay out of Allegheny County where Pittsburgh is located in…instead, move to adjoining Beaver County (no Allegheny County high taxes to support the city of Pittsburgh services). Approximately 15 miles north of Pittsburgh. I was born and raised in Beaver County and highly recommend it. We had a beautiful, sunny blue sky summer so I don’t know what she is talking about regarding the weather. Past 3 winters have been mild, spring came early and now we are enjoying a beautiful fall with the colorful foliage. She is a ‘Debbie downer’! I don’t know how she sells any homes 🙄. Move to Beaver County and enjoy life! 🤗
The city is sooo much better compared to the 70s & prior, when smokestacks clogged the air. But now it’s a very beautiful city from the hills around Duquesne & Pitt, & Shadyside. Also you probably love cold & icy weather since you didn’t mention that, lol.
Thank you Rylee Madden. I was in Pittsburgh for the first time from Houston. I thought overall a very good looking city and nice people. I got to my hotel late at night the first day in downtown around 11:30PM and yes it was like a ghost town and somewhat scary. The only ones in the street were homeless. But during the day city looked great and enjoyed my time there. Thanks
Some of these are bit of a personal nit picky opinion. I lived a good chunk of my life in this city but also in New England/North Carolina/Europe and now Washington State. Yeah some of the bridges have issues (it's a state wide issue). Construction is common in damn near every state where winter exists. Freezing weather destroys roads that's just how it is. Pittsburgh is so damn cheap compared to a lot of places. My Rent in Washington state for 750SQ ft could pay most peoples mortgages in pittsburgh with some to spare. The flooding isn't a common thing. Happens every so often when there's heavy heavy rain for an extended period of time. Pittsburgh is pretty livable, friendly and full of history. beats a lot of cities i've visited in my 34 years
I moved to Pittsburgh after living in San Francisco and it was like finding paradise. Loved it. Loved the Carnegie, library and museum, the parks, the friendly people, the ethnic neighborhoods, the universities, and, especially compared to San Francisco where I had almost been murdered, the safety. My wife moved there after living in mainline Philly, Iran, Ceylon, and felt the same as I did.
9. Road construction and detours!! PennDOT isn't happy unless they are making drivers miserable. Those evil bastards have daily meetings to devise new ways to torture our daily commutes. 😠
Hahaha 😂 I thought this was going to be a satirical video along the lines of, if you don't like affordability or strangers being friendly, don't move here. You were very fair in your assessments. I agree with all of them, but I don't care. I'm a transplant to Pittsburgh and I'm madly in love with the city and its diverse neighborhoods. ❤
I've always been amazed to see how many health care workers in uniform go into a Sheetz or 7 Eleven and buy multiple packs of cigarettes. It's hard to break old habits that were handed down from generation to generation. But West Virginia is far worse.
When they made folks smoke outside their office back in the 90's, I guess, it seemed pregnant women were smoking everywhere. I haven't noticed it in the last ten years.
We are moving to our other home on The Big Island in the next 6 to 9 months. It’s funny how everyone complains about the stuff your talking about but just stays. A lot of neighborhoods have a very non transient population….I mean…..we have had many of the same neighbors for the 27 years here in our surprisingly quiet East Pittsburgh Boro. 🤙
Are you east OF Pittsburgh? Or actually East Pittsburgh Boro? I grew up in East Pittsburgh on Bessemer terrace and I wouldn't even drive through there anymore, a good friend of mine still lives there
the reason people stay is because they inherited the house from their family. ssssooooooo they stay. can be a negitive thing in life. i got , i guess you can say pushed out of pittsburgh back in the early 80s for lack of job and no house to inherited from my grandmother. it was the best thing that happened to me. went on with my life in arizona while when i go back to pittsburgh to see family and friends , they are just beat down and living in their parents house.
The OP literally wrote "East Pittsburgh Boro", So, I assume they mean East Pittsburgh Boro. As for Pittsburgh suburbs I'd NEVER drive through, that would be Wilkinsburg. Hell I'd rather drive through BRADDOCK at 3am than Wilkinsburg at 3pm, LOL.
Worse roads and highways in the US. Every year they raise the turnpike fees but never fix the potholes on the highways. Truckers also say PA is the worse state to drive through with the highway ramps that you literally have to slam on the brakes when getting off the highways as most ramps are shorter than anywhere else in the US. Also potholes on the highways. Plan on getting new shocks, tires and alignments every 2 years. On the plus side... You learn that yinz is a legit word and you get to eat perogies. You have the steelers the rebuilding penguins and even the pirates are playing a lot better.
@rpbajb you never had your 2013 vehicle aligned? Well no wonder you and your are use to potholes and crap highways. That car is taking a beaten dude. Your full of crap also. Apparently about your car or safety of other people on the roads. What threw tires twice a month? I guarantee you don't check your also.
@@rpbajb I understand where the turnpike goes dude..I'm referencing pittsburgh because I live around there. I hope I never follow behind you any day as I'll probably need a gas mask for the fumes coming out of your vehicle. Do you get that inspected by joe shmoe down the road who uses duct tape to slap on a fake inspection sticker. You have to work for penndot if you are able to drive that vehicle you have or don't have.
I just moved here from Southern CA and I adore Pittsburgh. CA sun never did me any favors and certainly wasnt worth the insane cost of living, the dirtiness, the homelessness and the congestion out there. PGH is far quieter/cleaner, has seasons (beautiful!) and offers far more bang for you buck. But everybody has different needs so its definitely not for everyone. Two things I miss are good Mexican food and a good selection of liquor! lol These state-owned liquor stores ate pretty sad. Anyone considering a move here should check it out. Also, flood zones and transfer taxes are very easy to avoid here.
It's oddly comforting to walk into an Eat-N-Park on a weekend and see all the staff in Steelers jerseys and t-shirts. Being a Steelers fan is almost like a religion.
Yes and going into the grocery store on Sunday everyone wearing Steelers jerseys… if there is a football game on Sunday at 1pm the grocery stores will be packed and then they are completely empty at 12:30 cause everyone is ready to watch the game lol
As an African American from Connecticut living in Pittsburgh, it's a beautiful city. Here's what you need to know if you're a black working professional: Pennsylvania is ranked 37th in education. They tax heavily, but it doesn't reflect in their education system; it can be racist. Poor education is usually the fuel that causes this, on top of Pittsburgh bordering West Virginia and Ohio. The poverty and poor education spill over into the city. The only time African Americans are celebrated in Pittsburgh is when they're holding a football. The people "with money" in Pittsburgh have inflated egos because most have never lived anywhere else. The median income in Pittsburgh is $29k a year, so making 100k may make you feel more successful than you actually are.
I used to live there and now live in florida. Everything you mentioned has a trade of something that happens in another different state. These are not really reasons to not live in a state.
Pittsburgh flooding; buy a house on top.of a hill where there is no flooding. During heavy rains drive on routes on the top of the hills. Bridges are located over the 3 rivers. In the suburbs, there are few large bridges. Weather, although wr have many cloudy days, the sun will shine in cloud breaks. PITTSBURGH RARELY GETS TORNADOES. About once every 20 years, we get a TORNADO, but it is rare, and the rare tornado bounces off the hill tops. The transfer tax in the City of Pittsburgh is offset by lower home prices in the City. If you are from New York City, we do not have the rat problem. So your Rat Terriors will not have the rat hunting like New York. Pooping in the streets is not tolerated in Pittsburgh, like in New York. Pittsburgh does jail shop lifers. So if you are a New Yorker then Chicago would be better.
I found Pittsburgh to be a really wonderful city! Lots of Young people, and is very clean. Things are kinda close to each other and the weather is not that bad. Really enjoyable city
What kind of sales person are you? Who the H... badmouths their product? Do you live here? We have a vibrant arts community [theater, world class symphony, museums, opera, ballet]. Pollen yes -from trees and flowers. Visitors from other cities can't believe how green the area is [ we aren't The Smokey Old Town any more] But you probably don't know anything of Pittsburgh's history. I wouldn't buy ice water from you if I was in the desert. Sorry to be whinny but I need to defend my home.
For those seeking to move to Pittsburgh please listen up Allegheny County the County seat of Pittsburgh has become a cesspool of crime of street drugs, violence, stabbings, assault and our transit system is deeply getting worse. Our region has some of the Country's best history and Rails to Trails, yet the pure transit options make it impossible to move freely. The Violence is getting deeply worse and our Golden Triangle that's our Downtown or Center City section is filled with crime to where we lost many of our businesses and Restaurants due to the growing crime that's growing here.
The counties of Beaver Butler Lawrence. Any county but Allegheny County. On top of the 6% sales tax Allegheny adds on another 1%. Allegheny also has a 10% drink tax . The public schools are fair at best. However The Pittsburgh Symphony Strip district and various museums along with The Gateway Clipper fleet are excellent. But I wouldn't live in Allegheny County.
If I moved to Pittsburgh it would be to Mt. Lebanon where they have their own Police, Good Schools & community & would come down to Pittsburgh for events & games, I visited Mt. Lebanon once & loved it!
I'm a 3 year transplant from Milwaukee. My top 3: Right wing politics, no opportunities for displaced blue collar workers, way too many SUVs and pickups
Nice town, but too isolated Also, you forgot to mention all the hills. Everything in Pittsburgh is on top of, bottom of or side of a hill. Drives a flatlander crazy.
Pittsburgh is a working class city. Not sure why we got to be like other cities yes business close early probably cause are public transportation does not run 24/7. Just saying
I live 25min out of Pittsburgh in the state of WV you get all the advantages of living in a city while living in a smaller town. Ntm the cost of living is much cheaper than in PA
Anyone who moved to Pittsburgh from somewhere else and talks about how they like it is going to be a sick-minded person who was run out of their hometown and came to a sick place where they can flourish and function
Another thing that sucks about Pittsburgh, and the whole state of Pennsylvania, are your stupid liquor laws. I went to a concert in Pittsburgh about a year ago. The show let out about 10pm and not only was nothing open, but it was impossible to buy some beer. I live in Columbus where most gas stations and small convenience stores sell beer and wine. Hell, we even have bars in laundromats and grocery stores here.
Terrible job market for young people. Unless you work in the medical field, University jobs or trucking. Other than that most jobs don’t pay enough for you to live. Don’t move to this dying town. Anytime I needed a good job, I found one in Columbus Ohio. A new up coming city.
Everyone works in government police, teachers, county workers, municipal workers firefighters the whole place is crawling with government employees who walk around like Saddams political appointees
I grew up in Pittsburgh, but I now live about an hour or so away from the city. Traffic, parking & taxes are terrible, and unfortunately, the city is becoming a ghetto with lots of run-down areas & high crime. That's probably why nothing stays open later.
The microphone belongs closer to your mouth and further away from the camera. I’m not exactly sure why you think that having a large microphone in frame is a better result than having clear audio. Pro tip: fix that for your next video. It’s hard to watch when it’s hard to hear.
@@livinginpittsburghpennsylvania Good to hear . . . no pun intended, but there is nothing wrong with the equipment, physics dictates that the farther away from the source the less signal to noise it will pick up. A far away mic will hear more room reflections, have a higher noise floor. You can post process the audio, but that will remove some quality to eliminate the distractions and is an extra unnecessary step. Scoot that mic closer, and problem solved 😉
People drive through tunnels in PGH like they are driving into a black hole. I miss the mills, where everyone made money; now only a select few make money. Then all of the outsiders suck, all of the woke people suck, and the city has always sucked. been here 79 years, and it always has. It has gotten too expensive. For those not from here, I will explain how people from here think. We like it cheap and unchanged; that's pretty much it. PGH is really not racist due to the areas being self-segregating. Basically, I don't show up in your area, and you don't show up in mine, and everyone gets along. People don't move to Pittsburgh unless they are moving from a place that is total garbage. Ya, the area has turned pretty much into assholes; it is definitely not the Pittsburgh of the past; it has lost a lot of its feel. If it keeps it up it may lose it's name.

I’m 40 years 9 months old and was born in Pittsburgh in October 1983 and moved to Raleigh Durham in June 2000.
Alot of one way streets
Pittsburgh is old, we were established in the 1700's. Our roads were once carriage paths, so yeah, some are narrow. It's different from, say, Phoenix where the roads were designed with automobiles in mind. I've lived here all my life, it's not a big problem.
Your candor is refreshing! Thanks!
Definitely
Too much inaccurate data here. I don't agree with her 'opinion', and I've lived in Pittsburgh all my life.
i love it here, moved here in 2012, use to live 45 min south of San Francisco, my allergies were worse in Calif., PRO's less expensive, nice people, not crowded, beautiful all year round beautiful hills, creeks, waterfalls, trees, wildlife, deer, owls, hawks, birds, beaver, muskrat, coyote, i saw a badger once, yes a badger on Coraopolis Rd in Coraopolis heading to McKees Rocks you have to drive slow and watch out for deer, i put an electronic deer whistle that chirps it has on/off button, saved me about 8 times from hitting deer, etc...
The 1880s!
strange to think that the quality control was BETTER back then! By the time the 1960s rolled around bridges were getting pumped out on the cheap
I was originally born and raised in monroeville, Pennsylvania which is a suburb of Pittsburgh.
i will say yes the weather is rainy and gloomy sometimes which can be a good thing depending on how you look at it i know last year a lot of the county did not get rain and was in a drought. and cooler hear to with the sea levels rising a lot of the major Citys like new york and some state will totaly go under water in are life time yes Pittsburgh is not prefect. i like pittsburgh bin living i the outskirts for a long time
One huge thing is that most houses are built over old mine shafts.
(Seriously, in my opinion, both transfer taxes are way too high).
interesting!
For future reference, your microphone is facing away from you or it's not hooked up. I can barely hear you.

The city is sooo much better compared to the 70s & prior, when smokestacks clogged the air. But now it’s a very beautiful city from the hills around Duquesne & Pitt, & Shadyside. Also you probably love cold & icy weather since you didn’t mention that, lol.
Oh no. I forgot the ice and cold 🥶 that will be on my next one.

Pittsburgh is pretty livable, friendly and full of history.
beats a lot of cities i've visited in my 34 years
Thank you for clearing that up.
Move closer to your microphone had trouble hearing you. But good list. I grew up in Upper St. Clair but live in suburban Philly now.
Extra 3% tax stinks but the city did look super clean when I was there last month. Maybe the rain washed away the trash lol
I love to hear that!
9. Road construction and detours!! PennDOT isn't happy unless they are making drivers miserable. Those evil bastards have daily meetings to devise new ways to torture our daily commutes. 😠
Road construction-and they do all the road construction projects at the same time.
They purposely plan to take down the main road and all reasonable detours all at the same time. It happens all the time and it is beyond frustrating.
Very accurate

You were very fair in your assessments. I agree with all of them, but I don't care. I'm a transplant to Pittsburgh and I'm madly in love with the city and its diverse neighborhoods. ❤
Other issues worth considering:
-Everybody smokes
-Lax vehicle noise enforcement
-City income tax
I've always been amazed to see how many health care workers in uniform go into a Sheetz or 7 Eleven and buy multiple packs of cigarettes. It's hard to break old habits that were handed down from generation to generation. But West Virginia is far worse.

My car is a 2013, and I've never replaced the shocks or had it aligned. Oh, and the turnpike doesn't go through Pittsburgh, it's a state highway.
