Your ability to control the flow of conversation and keep people off of you until you were strong enough to survive multiple robs is quite impressive!
Winning with no wheat or ore is just remarkable. Generally I find it possible to play without one of them, but not both
Idk how you consistently convince the table that you aren't clearly winning, it's some kind of jedi mind trick. And then you react with genuine frustration when anyone rationally starts blocking you
Blocking is not a problem. My push is to encourage dealmaking and open lines of discussion before just silently solo blocking me. There were many deals for blue to get into the game if they negotiated with the robber. I would rather see someone extract strategic value out of me that way than passively playing. From the stand point of using voice chat, it’s unfortunate when one player is not participating in the discussion, which can be challenging in terms of balancing.
@@dandydrew Yes, on paper blue should have been more competitive in this game. I'll just leave it at.. you did a good job of convincing the middle 2 contenders to target your only other real competitor

@@dandydrew That was a very roundabout way of saying that they completely missed the fact that you were heavily in the lead lmao. Like the fact there was even a discussion at 37:00 instead of a 100% certain block was crazy lmao.
Even at maybe the 16:00 mark I would have been starting to consider stopping dealing with you (although that may just be hindsight speaking)
some videos are hard to watch bc. they just trade you the barn. Like does no one understand that if you trade the road player everything else he needs including 4/5 of a city that he will crush you with this setup? I honestly feel either you are so damn good at psychology or also the Catan community are too constructive nice people. When I play online like this no one trades me sh*t and then you're screwed ^ ^
think a lot of the time, players wont think for themselves when they have a better player than them in the lobby, especially over voice chat where they can get mindgamed. Of course, you always want to underrepresent your strength and overrepresent your opponents, but in general, players should be able to think for themselves as well. Catan is really not that complex a game where, at high levels, you need someone else to tell you who is winning and what you should do unless a deal is being made.

"[green] has to take a risk" but their risk should have been letting black have a chance, not Drew. Maybe it's just hindsight and knowing your hand, but they all misread your hand and were only saved by the 7. By that point though you were so far ahead and would have gotten road settle for the win either way before black or blue can do anything to compete. Bravo amazing table talk again!
Iconic and underrated! I love an oreless wheatless wood port setup on a high ore board. So much power to hustle for those city trades. And the 2 wheat is icing on the cake lol

This one was hard to watch. Need to play against some tougher competition. Unreal how you were not blocked on several occasions in the second half of the game. Also - no one should be trading with you during this time either. You were obviously the biggest threat most of this game. Blue had a great set-up that never materialized. Most of this game you were so far ahead. Green needs to make progress without ending the game - doesn't matter if he is able to advance his game if it helps the leader win.

Green is a great player and guy… I do think he was put into a bad situation with placements and had to make really tough decisions. I think the table as a whole could have done better coordinating road away from me.
I was thinking all-in on the wood port from the 8-3-4 and going 9-5-10
Convincing green to drop roads to 11-4 over 5-4-11 was masterful.

Ok, judging from the title, I'd guess your starting configuration is the 4-9-6 left and 3-8-11 to grab the materials for a road to either the wood port or the sheep port.

Ngl I look at this board and three good options 694, 5910 and 834.
Reasons 694 good sheep either sheep port one road away. Same with 834, less production for wood but still the 5910 covers that. 5910 hands down best road production across the board and if have wood port, easily best by trading in. Also wide diversity of numbers allows for harder robbing opportunities later on. Can wait to see how this goes

Should your 2nd city have have gone on 9-10-11 @29:07? 9 and 8 wood will be where you most likely still get blocked, and at that point you already have 2 cities so your most likely win condition is 3 more roads and a settle. To do that youd need 4 total brick so doubling up your brick spots should get you there in just 2 brick rolls. Doubling up the 2 wheat doesnt really help because you only need 1 for the settle, and doubling the 5 wood just doesnt seem like it helps that much considering the rest of your wood production.
On first blush, I think 469 left to sheep port, 9-10-11 left to build to 5 wheat.
I am very new to Catan (only played AI so far), bit I really like the ports. I would go 3 8 10 for sure. I would like 5 9 10, but afraid someone would steal the port, so likely 4 8 to secure the wood port. (5 9 10 second pick for mats ofc)

Drew was manipulative as hell in this game. Green was terrible and fell for it. As soon as you hit 7, they should have embargoed.
Also something to note is that in real tournaments, it's against the rules to non-block. non-steal. or promise future trades. Fine for Colonist or unsanctioned tourneys, just not official ones like qualifiers, regionals, nats, etc.

Not against the rules, just not enforceable. So I was told at a nationals qualifier last year. It's all on the honor system.
@@KameronFranklin No, it's actually against the rules. Specifically in the Catan championship rulebook, it's rule 3.0.2. Again, for regular Catan games or Colonist, it's fine. But for qualifiers and nationals, it's a no-go.
3.0.2 Resolve Die Roll: Once the dice are rolled, the dice roll must be
resolved (resources must be distributed, or the robber must be placed, and a
card stolen) before any other actions may be taken.
This prohibits bargaining that includes discussion about any type of
resource exchange, which is only allowed in the trading and building phase.
If a player attempts to negotiate a trade before completing the robber action,
the robber will be placed in the desert and the player receives no cards as in
rule 3.0.16(b).
@@zachcarmichael699 That rule only prohibits discussion before resolving the die roll, which was not what you said in your original comment. Granted, a lot of these Colonist videos have the players bargaining before they place the robber, but if you watch Catan Championship videos, the players "extort" regularly during the build/trade phases.
Does the rule even get enforced? Like, do arbiters come around and tell people no one is allowed to talk once a 7 is rolled? @@KameronFranklin

I almost got it right, my prediction was "384, 9510 for starting road and rush to wood port?". I'm not even your student nor an experienced player lol.
Of course a few were close but there is a difference in taking the 91011 because you almost double your brick output while getting access to the 592. Nice call on the wood port!

@@dandydrewthey could've also tried to block you with 692 but it does make more sense for them to secure the double sheep spot and have 1 city to double them both

I saw this idea but 692 is overly defensive and a tad slower for blue. Better to have the 4 sheep and road settle to snag the 3 brick. I always have the backup 510, so I’m not too fussed either way. Also it’s a very subtle thing but 91011 gives me a road network that can’t be broken by a settle spot. This is huge as a road player and worth experimenting in your road games!
Honestly 6/3 sheep port much better for black. Because a) better sheep b) same brick d) expansion on the 6/2 much better.

Love all the hate that I got for this game lol. (Green by the way) I was screwed after plow to wheat port and drew wouldn’t trade me the roads to go to the 4/5/11 so had to go 11/4. Didn’t hit drew on last knight because with right steal I get pop with the two wheat from Drew to take army next turn. Just have to hope drew misses his rolls but I was basically out from the start. Not saying I played a great game but don’t judge me off a single game. I did make final table in this tournament 🤷🏼♂️

I think you can't give the already winning player at the table more ammunition, and especially not ore when that's the one resource he's hunting for in this position. I would've taken my chances and tried to fight for the 5-4-11. No port hurts, but it's still a potential to win the game with 4 city army or even 3 city army vp pulls, plus the potential of a sneaky road win too (connecting your two initial settlements together.
When no one else at the table is trading you it makes it tough. Again, I only went 11/4 because Drew was willing to help me get there and not 11/5/4. Gives me an extra settle spot and am hoping for a 3 or RB for the 11/5/4. Not saying I played a great game, some of the criticism is definitely deserved. All I’m saying is don’t judge me off of a single game when I performed well overall in the tournament.
@@treversturdy7747The problem was black, he traded Drew the first city all so he could plow the wheat port when it wasn't even that good for him. He should have just citied up the 5810 himself, settled on the 3:1 port and then used his road builder to backplow to the 4511. Even giving himself the chance to sneak road.
He was way too focused on screwing you.
Didn't drew owe you a brick from the start of the game nonsteal deal? I feel like that brick could have taken you out of a sticky situation earlier on and gotten you the port
