I think that part of the beauty of catan is that it is self balancing. If people know you are a strong player, they target you and balance the game out. It's built into the game and is a really important part of it imo
14:49 Seems like a perfect time to play the YoP to get 2 Wood, then road settle on the Wheat Port. Then, you'd still have 1 Brick, 3 Wheat, and 3 Ore left in your hand, enough to ALSO upgrade the 5-10 to a city on the same turn. Not only would this get you 2 additional points and bring you to 9, but it'd also allow you to trade in Wheat 2:1 when you have a city on a 9 AND 10 of Wheat, offering tons of flexibility. Not only that, but getting the city on the 5-10 boosts your Brick production for the Brick Port and boosts your Sheep to match your Ore and Wheat production, allowing you to buy more Devs and pull for a VP while protecting Largest Army. Buying the Dev could've waited because I think getting the settlement on the Wheat Port ASAP was a higher priority to free up your hand even more.
Couldn't one make an argument for taking the 3 wood, 10 brick and then plow red immediately since you start with a road in hand? Great video as always!
listen in at 3:15 he says he could do that, but thinks it would be to slow. i guess you sit on only 5 pips at that spot for too long and you have to wait even longer to profit from the brick port. since you now need 2 sheep which you dont produce and additional wood which you only produce on a 3 and on top you are missing out on the brick production on the 8, which you also need, in order to trade with the board. also the rest of the board has plenty of time realize how strong that position would become if they were to allow it to happen in a reasonably short amount of time
14:49 probably Yop for 2 wood, road settle. Now we have 3 wheat 3 ore and 1 brick in hand, can use wheat port to pop still. Or even just city to 9 with brick and wheat left in hand. I understand being scared of white taking army, but not all down Ds are knights, us poping doesn't guarantee knights either. With either play adding wheat port, any roll gives you a chance to at least pull for the win next turn, if not city up for guaranteed win and even white has two knights, us wins army long term with strong production and ports. Strictly better scenarios than played
yeah I agree with that play. Dylan needed to play bit slower in that spot and consider all his options cuz he has brick port and yop. like there's a lot of plays he could do.
I really think you should have used the Yop to settle on wheat port.. you always taught us to use it for hard tasks… and you could have citied it to win at the end
I thought of that, but he really needed to defend army in that situation, because there were lots of fresh devs on the table. so he had to pop. Then his hand was not enough to settle at that point without the sheep
12:15 really surprising you didn't go for the road to prevent yourself from getting plowed + get to the wheat port + get another settlement spot... how is that not a mistake?
On the turn where you used the yop, I might've considered settle, citying and saving the yop for a rainy day. All the yop did for you was produce a wood to build a road, and a sheep that sits in your hand. It's just not a very effective yop. Drew demonstrated in a recent vid, that if you're patient with the yop to use it when it's most effective, it can pay off. I recognize you wanted to secure the settle spot which is valid. Another play which a lot have mentioned was using the yop to settle wheat port, then you can pop a dev with your newfound wheat port. I think that's also a valid idea. The play you made was also pretty good, I just don't think it was the best.
@@DyLightedCatan in theory though even if it is slow doesn’t it block all of reds upper progress and secure the brick port even if it’s a little later? (While also obtaining wood)?

Why not the 3 10 as second settlement to then go directly to the 8 10 first turn with the free road and then going to the port later. It secures 3 safe spots. It might take longer for you to reach the port tho.
I'd choose 10-3 (a road) as 2nd and take advantage of being the first to play to cut red and build road towards 8-10 brick. It'd be a very aggressive move but and probably makes u a target for blocking, but u can defense later with knights right?
Hey I was interested in the discord links but they've expired. Given that you only just posted the video, I wonder if you could change the duration of the links' validity? Cheers.
Downside of your setup is the high variance nature. Unfortunate that your rolls just disappeared. After that big turn where you used the yop, you didn't get any cards for like 20 rolls. You did roll the 10 initially, but it was all mono'd/stolen from you. You had it in the bag otherwise
I was joyriding with one of my friends when I drove over some road debris and obliterated my tire which kinda ruined my night, hope this video makes it better!
I think the one who missed his opportunity here was red. first he spared you by settling on 3-10 instead of plowing you by settling on 5-10, and then he bought devs when he should have simply stored ore to build a city and keep building. It was clear that no one was going to contest road to him, while he would have never got army so most of the dev deck was junk in his position. Indeed the road building was terrible for him.. He could have traded his brick for ore with both white and black early on but he never did.
