    An in depth review and demo of the Boss Re202 Space Echo Pedal. This is an emulation of the classic Re-201 Space Echo tape delay, which brings back that gritty sound in a small affordable unit.
    Here I walkthrough all the main functions and demo the delays and feedback settings as well as the reverb, saturation and of course .. the wow and flutter!

    I've been waiting for someone with a synth to demo the RE202, lots of strung planks being used thus far. A truly boss demo in the scouse sense. It sounds great in your hands and as an SH-101 owner to know that it sounds superb with that kit too is tremendous news. Many thanks our Starsky.

    Great to see one going through a synth.. Most reviews are with guitars.
    I owned an RE201 from 2006 to around 2018. Complete bastard to keep running, glad to have got rid. I bought the RE20 when it came out, side by side with the original, they are very different but this new offering is very close indeed, mine arrived 3 weeks ago. It's great.

    Great demo sir! Very tempted to get this at some point. Yeah it can be done in software (at least close enough when part of a fully mixed track), but I think there's just something about having the dedicated knobs and also the retro look of the hardware that makes this inspiring to use.

      I have the Fantom 8. If you don't care about the vst in a box thing and you want the juno layout its probably for you. I personally just like the warmth of older analog gear. You can make italodisco and Chicago house with the new stuff but it doesn't sound the same to my ears. Most digital effects just color it with a cold feel that doesnt sit well with me. A professional with the proper processing could probably make it so that I couldn't notice in a mix but I don't care to go through all that trouble and become that guy myself.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 роки тому +1

      An interesting question… I love the zen delay it’s a superb live tool and the filters allow you to really play with an infinite delay. This is a more a recreation of the original. The zen is easier to control perhaps with its larger knobs (the phasing is a pain sometimes though! - I think it’s a minor latency causing it). This has the various head modes which are missing on the zen. For live tweaking I’d go Zen for more accurate Re201 I’d go with this. Happy with either tbh.

    Zen delay or RE-202 as my first delay pedal for studio use?

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  Рік тому +1

      It very much depends on what you’re planning on using it for. The Zen is fabulous for tweaking and holding the feedback in place then playing with the filter.. great for drops and builds and background textures. The Re202 is better for those classic tones - it’s much more like having a space echo with extras - so if there’s a particular head setting you like for example you’ll get it from the 202 but may not on the Zen. Zen has different styles of delay but not a range of tape echo settings. Something else to be aware of is the Zen makes a very very faint high pitch noise that can’t be heard in a mix but may be noticed in a studio setting (I never heard it until someone asked me to check it out - it doesn’t bother me as I generally don’t have stuff turned up to ear blistering levels but you may notice in a silent studio). In summary for fun, filters and experimentation the Zen for classic Space Delay accuracy the 202 - you can still have fun and experiment on the space delay obvs - but it’s always in the realms of a space delay.

  • @silvertongues2
    @silvertongues2 2 роки тому

    Isn’t the tap tempo doing what it’s supposed to ie it’s setting the delay time to a division of the tempo. But you just can’t set what those divisions are (eg 8th, 16th’s etc). I think my re20 is the same.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah but it’s a bit odd that the ‘base’ timing is head 1 which isn’t the beat but a subdivision. So you’re tapping a subdivision rather than the beat. Its make more sense to me to tap the 4/4 beat and it divided it. Not a biggie but something they could add the option maybe.

    • @silvertongues2
      @silvertongues2 2 роки тому

      It sounds like an 8th note division. Your tapping is just telling it the tempo, and then, from that it calculates how long in time an 8th note would be, and then from then onwards whenever you play a note, you’ll hear it again delayed by an 8th note amount of time later….. the relationship between head 1 to 4 is the same as a tape echo, in that playback head 4 is further away from head 1 (and the record head) so the delay time is longer. So setting the time for head 1 and everything following makes sense when trying to match the behaviour of a physical tape echo.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 роки тому +1

      @@silvertongues2 I know how it works, but tapping the tempo at the speed of head 1 is tapping incredibly quickly it would make more sense to tap the tempo, then the unit does the division for you. It’s literally impossible to tap especially with your foot at the speed of head 1 in most cases. It doesn’t matter if it follows head 1 like the original as that didn’t have tap tempo and head 1 doesn’t represent a single beat.

    • @silvertongues2
      @silvertongues2 2 роки тому +1

      @@StarskyCarr it is doing the division for you, it's the same as any other tap tempo delay, same as the older RE20. You have an OB6? It's the same as the OB6, except you can see the calculated BPM in a display, and you can set the division (which you can't on the RE202). The tap tempo is setting the Repeat Rate which is the equivalent of Tape Speed, the heads don't have the notion of a speed. It's all just a matter of controlling how long it takes for the recorded sound on tape to travel from the record head, to the playback head, by controlling the tape speed / repeat rate.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  2 роки тому

      @@silvertongues2 you’re not telling me anything new there 😂😂 no offence intended here - just the fact that in eg the OB6 when you tap the tempo you’re tapping the beat not 16ths or 32ths .. not quite sure what’s so hard to understand. Get one tap the tempo and see what I mean. Get another and tap the tempo and it’ll become clear. The major difference is with this you’re not tapping the beat but tapping head 1 which is generally used to play much faster rates than the beat. Normally you tap the beat and the Fx splits it down w to 8ths 16th etc with this you’re tapping the 16ths. Dead simple concept, but not sure I think it works well in practise. Great unit though. Sounds ace - and I’m no longer looking for a vintage tape unit which is exactly the market I suspect Roland were tapping (get it?) into 😀

    The signal it's giving off sounds a tad too 'clean' and I'm not hearing that tape saturation you get when putting something through one of the originals.
    I'm not saying this doesn't have its place, but part of the charm of the originals is that saturation and degradation you get by putting the signal onto tape. Quite frankly I've heard better plugin emulations than this.

      £305 at Rimmers in the U.K. so depends on if you think that’s affordable. Compared to £2k it’s a lot more affordable. 😀

    There was the Boss RE-20 that did come before this, which is also pretty good, although not offering quite as many features as this one. BTW, why isn't the head selector knob notched? It seems to make it very susceptible to being accidentally moved! Also, the power-off-power-on-whilst-holding-tap to select the type of reverb is really dumb. Reverbs that are frankly horrible sounding (and probably an afterthought hence the weird way to access them?). $540 CAD for that? No thanks. I'd prefer a Strymon Volante for $40 less. Anyway, thanks for sharing. (small quibble if I may, hearing the same notes being played over and over for 15 minutes was getting a bit tiresome in the end?)

      I have to apologise for the notes they drove me to the edge of sanity while editing. I was hoping that it would make comparisons between sections easier to hear. An experiment I won’t be repeating 🤦‍♂️😂

      I have a Volante but I'm still very tempted to get one of these. On paper they make look very similar, but the character and sound seem really quite different. I hope someone does a head-to-head comparison video.
      The Volante's built-in reverb sounds fantastic though, definitely better than the default reverb on this unit, and arguably better than the alternative reverbs this offers as well.

      @@StarskyCarr Never mind! I really appreciate your work and big thanks for that video.
      I am sure it is a really difficult task to demo effects. Playing the same notes with the same sound while changing all the settings may really give us the best idea what the unit is capable of. Kind of a deep dive, maybe.
      But on the other hand, I personally would have liked to get an idea of what it can do in different musical contexts with different kinds of typical keyboard sounds, such as pads, EPs, clavs, String Machines, etc...

      @@torstenp6392 I know.. I had to make the decision between demoing the different modes and demoing different instruments ... guitarists can just play a guitar! so I concentrated on the different modes here.. maybe I'll make another with different sounds - but its too much for a single video if you want to dig into the functions and understand the impact on the result. What I should have done was just make minor changes. You live and learn!

    SH 101, my fav ever synth. Roland, the Lancia of synths, how to be 5 times in a row world rallye champion and then disappear with awful actual digital products. This digital pedal is simply an awful plug sold at gold price. I hope Roland and Behringer get bankrupted asap. The best tape delay was the Korg Stage Echo, far better than Roland ones. Mine was stolen by instrument seller. Got a real 201 but is inferior.

    The first version of this pedal, the RE-20, as with most of the emulation pedals Boss came out with around that time, was absolute total rubbish -- a harsh lo-fi effect that sounded only vaguely like a space echo.

      I've used the RE-20 for more than 10 years and I'm pretty happy with it. Harsh lo-fi? Don't think so. The sound is actually pretty similar to this one, only without presets

      @@lagunagfx Disappointing if the new one hasn't drastically improved the sound. I've also had an RE-20 for 10 years. It sounds nothing like a Roland. Sounds digital in all the worst ways -- linear and grating.

      @@Thoracius i own various tape delays plus some digital emularions. I do like the sound of the RE20 and don’t hear much difference between it and this new edition. That’s my impression, at least. Usually it’s good to not overdrive its input and as a note, I must say I always use it as a send fx, and never liked it’s reverb specially (even from the original Roland). The MIDI capabilites are interesting, though nothing unique in that price range.
      As a producer I usually add external eq and some flanger to the send chain. Using external feedback on a send instead of the internal “repeats” give some interesting results.
      I sold my Roland RE-201 because it was a nightmare to maintain. Expensive and not much reliable, plus the constant decay of tapes. Vintage gear could be ugly sometimes. I find the Wem/Watkins Copycat is the perfect balance because of its simpler mechanisms. Anyway, to each their own, I guess it’s a matter of personal preference.
      Use whatever fits your taste, mate. I’m happy not dealing with stuck capstans and preamp failures. Hope this pedal feels your needs.

      I've owned a RE-20 for about a year, and it isn't harsh sounding at all. Sounded pretty similar to this one actually. I sold it because there weren't any presets on it and because the spring reverb emulation was poor (much like this one also). This RE-202 simply looks and sounds like a revamped RE-20 for a lot more $.
