I’ve never had so much gearhead fun.
So, I was watching this weeks live show. I saw most of it live and was finishing off. It rolled to this video and Mick's opening just slew me. You are a beautiful and very expressive human. We all spend so much time thinking about scales, licks and stunts, but the beauty is the the chords, the harmony and the ability to allow beauty to emerge. You are vvery special at that. I don't know where I'd be w/o you too. It'd be good, I guess, but not as good as it is with you these years of TPS. Life changing.
My First thought after the starting this Video: This reminds me of my dad working on his toy train for hours. He even had the same glasses swag as Mick.
I know that this is not the purpose of these videos but I have to say this has completely sold the G3 Atom to me. The User Interface and capabilities seem to be superbly worked out and understandable (I currently use a Boss MS-3 which I can use but this is another level). Thank you. Now I have to work out how to afford it!
Hopefully this inspires more people to use MIDI, people assume that it's complicated when it's really not. I encouraged everyone to at least try it, it's your greatest arsenal waiting to be discovered Happy new year TPS Community.
Hopefully, this does not fool those of you with mental disability into wasting time and money on a product that ultimately will not work for you. If DOS 6.2 Manuals are chronically soporific, it could be a symptom of underlying physical issues, which may preclude adequacy in certain, seemingly mundane skills. YMMV, I recently lernt why I have trouble with some strangely disparate things, and right at the area that the neurological testing indicated, the MRI showed the white matter deficit thing. Since I didn't get this testing done in the Sixties, they are now putting me through additional senility testing crap, but if I am declining from age that is just a bonus. Any way give it a try if you do the pedal board thing. I don't do any switching whatever, but then I hardly do "music" either.
For those afraid of MIDI, the Morningstar products (MC6, MC8, etc.) are eye opening. Their editor makes it so ridiculously easy to program that anybody can do it.
Bought me G2 back at the start of lockdown for something to keep me sane. Such a fun tone trip it's been. I love my GigRig. Thanks Gents & Gal and here's to a better year!
@@MorleyRobertson1975 Also very good point. Reminds me of when they plugged in dumble style pedals into the Two Rock and the Matchless. "Sounds really good" yeah I hope it does!
I agree with Mick almost completely. I have a few pedals that can take midi, but I love to dial in the sounds and see what I am actually playing. I am about to venture into midi because I recently purchased a Bliss Factory and want to use more presets and sync it with my DD-500 for a few songs. like Mick suggested, it would be great if either of these pedals knobs or switches actually moved with the midi switching. The automatone CBA pedals open up the world of presets and tweekability to recreate studio performances for any live venue and make on the spot adjustments. Happy New Year to all!
As usual Gents, wonderful & fundamentally useful show! I have owned a G2 for 6mos now & can say honestly it has changed my sonic approach to playing after 30 years just from how clear & concise everything is. The ease of use & overall functionality is so important for this brain to wrap around. Dan you are a mad Genius & Mick well I also am going to take my midi journey after this episode. Wish me luck! 🤞🏼
Good luck Ross! Mick here. It’s a revelation when you hear it for the first time. I don’t think I can explain and/or people believe it until they hear it. Good luck with Em-one Dee-one. :0)
Back in the day I was so proud to sync my JMP1 to the Quadraverb... Then I sold everything as I literally used only four different sounds... Thanks to you guys I bought a 5 channel switcher two years ago. Now I am using it with 8 pedals and a two channel amp. A complete game changer... In order not to get lost, I programmed the switcher songwise. One bank is one song. The different sounds in a song follow the order of the switches... No more thinking and I really use my rig to its full extend. Like mostly everything in life it is a compromise but an active choice...;-) Thank you guys, I owe you a couple of songs! Love. Klod
A classic example of a show I would probably never have even thought to ask for, but incredibly happy to have the opportunity to watch now you've made it. And a very good job I think you did do. I also had the "Mick realisation" about halfway through that hey wait a minute, how much can these three pedals do? Everything? Hmm maybe this DIMI stuff is worth it after all. What a good job Big Tomato as done with those automatic pedals, starting with the two effects almost everyone uses and is also the most picky about the most of the time. Really good use case for all those features. When I first saw them I thought "yeah they do cool stuff but it comes with so much other stuff I don't need" but honestly looking at them, I think every bit I thought was flashy gubbins is actually more like yeah well if you want to be able to do this well then it's actually mostly necessary, and then they just went the extra part of well since it has to be there, might as well make it as good as possible to. Respect from me.
Oh dear. I have avoided midi for years but have a number of pedals that are midi compliant. I’ve also been reasonably sure I was desirous of a more sophisticated loop switcher than say the excellent Quartermaster family. Now I know that I need a G3 and to invest the time in learning how to make a G3 when I get one control my pedals. First day of 2021 and my bank account is weeping. Happy New Year my friends. Thanks for a very educational episode.
Digital control of pure analog sound tools is actually quite exciting, from the Chase Bliss pedals to Hook amps and beyond. What times we live in. Also a very educational vid as I am a new G3 Atom owner. I am still pondering how to make an expression pedal work as a non-tone sucking volume pedal in a generic way though. Back to the manual :).
Great show guys. “You put a plectrum in like this” I love it. Mick I encourage you to take on MIDI. The learning curve can be somewhat steep at first but once you understand the basic concepts it gets easier. It is incredibly useful in many live and studio applications. Being able to tap one switch on your G3 and have it switch your automatone preamp and delay simultaneously to the presets you want and turn on their loops then with another back to your clean tone is a huge benefit at a gig. If you ever venture into synths or even loopers and drum sequencers, MIDI can control them and sync them to a clock. The list goes on. All very useful. Hope you guys had a nice, restful break. Cheers and Happy New Year.
Great show! I'm patiently awaiting the artival of my G3, it shipped Dec.10 and is hung-up in a very congested and Covid affected US Postal System. This show provided lots of food for thought as I continue to plan the new board build. Great tone and playing guys. Cheers and Happy New Year!
YES!!! You did it! The loop switcher (and MIDI) show that I asked for a bit ago! I definitely understood why it would be a difficult show to do, not for the content (obviously) but because they didn't want it to come off like an advertisement - well BRAVO! it's great, and is another in a long line of excellent educational dives into specific gear, to gain deeper understanding of the functions and potential applications. This also serves as a touchstone to share with people, especially if they have questions, or are misinformed about switchers and MIDI, to help nicely expand their gear arsenal. You knocked this out of the park, too - condensed with some great info, especially for those just diving in. I have had a G2 for a while now, and while it has been a path of discovery, I knew any serious questions, confusion, or conundrums I encountered, would be answered by GigRig's excellent support - but that said, there are things explained in this video, that could a bit more rapidly advance someone's understanding which is great. I know many TPS regulars have been hoping for this show. Great Job, guys!
Thank you Mick and Dan for taking the time to put out this video. Very timely for me, I just sold my Fractal FX8 and am rebuilding my pedalboard and want to use midi controlled presets on a couple of Strymon, Eventide, and Source Audio pedals. I will be using a recently acquired G2 to control my pedals and although the G2 will be different than the G3 my guess is that it will be similar. Cheers to you both and a great 2021! Jim
Happy New Year chaps, Andy here. I went through the MIDI learning stage recently - I made it my Covid goal to rebuild my pedal board, using a MIDI loop switcher. I play in a theatre-level Floyd tribute, so you can imagine the range of pedals involved. All works like a dream - including two MIDI equipped multi effects, and a bunch of gain pedals - with the whole show mapped out on consecutive patches on the loop switcher. Game changer 😁
I stayed away from midi pedals for the same reasons, too many menus and too much tweaking involved. But then I purchased a Source Audio Collider, a Strymon Möbius, and a GigRig G2... Amazing!!! I eliminated 7 pedals on my board and replaced them with 2. (Plus my 6 other non-midi drive pedals, comp, pog, wah....) I have pre-set for every song in every set. It's a game changer. My tone has never been better plus no more tap dancing. The Möbius took a few minutes to learn. The Collider is so easy to use and program. I had some issues with the midi programming in relation to communicating with the G2, but the support team at GigRig was amazing, they set up a FaceTime chat and spent 90 minutes with me tweaking and figuring out the issues I was having. I'm glad I took a leap of faith, I would never go back from having some midi pedals on my board. Cheers : )
Massively helpful video, I’m definitely in the Mick camp when it comes to menu diving, so MIDI has always baffled me. But it genuinely looks like one can dip a toe into the MIDI water, just to recall some pedal presets, without too much hassle. Excellent. Also, when Mick was playing with the simple combo of a couple of drives in a preset and kicked on the reverb as stomp, then changed preset and the reverb went off I had a facepalm moment. Of course it goes off, you’ve kicked on another preset, so I started considering how presets might need versions with/without certain pedals... then Dan introduced sticky stomp, OH YES!!! I’m definitely in the market for a switcher at some point and aside from the many things a G3 can do, that is a beauty of a feature! Great video guys. Happy New Year :-)
Hi guys. I just wanted to congratulate you on presenting a subject, which for many guitarists is completely alien, in a way that may have produced a few light bulb moments for those people. I loved it because it showed the capabilities of G3 in context too.
I haven’t been afraid of midi or switchers, but I hadn’t seen the total benefit for myself until this run through. Sticky stomp box mode sounds perfect for me!! Thanks for all the hard work :)
I found you guys a week ago and thank you for filling a void I did not know existed in my life. Great content!! EDIT- it was Christmas Day I found you and it was the best gift other than my Buttercream Strat I received.
Thanks for reminding me that I have to go through the TPS archives and look for certain gear and re-watch the episodes. Pretty easy stuff to watch, when one has the time. 😸
Thank you, thank you, thank you. That was exactly the right level of information I could absorb about the functionality of the switcher and the MIDI capabilities. Brilliantly paced guys, well done!
I really enjoyed this video. It was really good watching Dan teach Mick the way the G3 works for the benefits of us at home. So many of your videos make so much more sense to me now. Also, the sounds you both get from those pedals is amazing! Keep up the good work guys!
MIDI TIP: Many of you may know this but I learned it by experience recently. If you have MIDI pedals with greater than 128 presets (Like many Strymons) include the MIDI CC Bank 0 command in the G3 MIDI commands even for presets 0-127 (the Bank 0 CC command is not necessarily required for preset 0-127 but read on). The reason is, if another G3 preset's MIDI command changes the pedal to Bank 1 or 2 that pedal (now in Bank 1 or 2 mode) will need the Bank 0 command to get back to where you need it to access the 0-127 presets. If you don't have the Bank 0 CC command in place you get to go back and add it later, like I did, after you add your first Bank 1 or 2 cc command on a seperate G3 preset :-) I hope this makes sense, I'm knew to the MIDI stuff.
Great episode as always chaps! I got the sense that you were both a little lower energy than normal, perhaps even melancholic at points - particularly Dan. I hope you’re both well. Take heart, we’ve made it to 2021!
Happy new year guys, great video as always. With the advent of analog drives/delays and tremolos etc with midi implementation the likes of switchers with midi cut down on the tap dancing big time and eliminate the need for so many pedals on ones board keeping things nice and tidy bit with endless tone options! As was said to me at a gig one night by the key board player in my brothers band , you would literally not have enough time in 4 long lifetimes to get to the end of sound possibility’s with midi control ......!
I hope the response to this is overwhelmingly positive because apparently I can watch Dan mess around with little LCD menus and be completely glued to my screen. This was super informative for me and I'm really glad you guys did it!
So perfectly timed to what I've been researching as the next evolution in my own pedalboard! Always informative, always humorous, and always loved is TPS. Happy New Year, guys!
54:44 “And there was my fuzz.” Reminds me so much of the Welshism: “I opened the door and there was my bike; gone!” Happy New Year everyone. This was a wonderful vid and really makes me lust over tomatoes and atoms, which incidentally should definitely be your prog rock album title.
Happy New Year, fellas. This was fantastic - and I always love these shows and look forward to them. This one was particularly eye (ear) opening and such a fantastic learning experience. I do remember spending hours with MIDI back in the first half of the 90's. And, yes: those were hours of "rocket surgery". As with pedals (but more trouble), there was all the setting up sounds, patches for songs - then, during band practice (I know, such nerds we were), making mental notes of what worked and what needed to be tweaked or abandoned. But, I could run stereo with a dry through. I had one of those ART boards with the 2 expression pedals. All of that to say, it is like prepping to paint or cook: the long end of the project is up front. Then, like the guitar being under your fingers after enough gigging and such, it just becomes what is "normal" for you - as if you have always know. The GigRig genius for me is that none of this has even been so easy to do - and so easy to make it visually logical. Thank you both. We have waited a long time to see this broken down in this way!!! Great teacher and a great student.
Some pedals can be turned on and off through MIDI and are true bypass internally, therefore one can free up a loop if the pedal is in front or the last in the chain anyway.
Right at 1:06:53, I sat up straight, because Mick’s “The Chord That Should Be Played With All Reverb Sounds” sounded like the opening arpeggio of Cocteau Twins’ “Serpentskirt”, from the 1996 album, “Milk & Kisses” (their last album), albeit in a different key. I swooned! Happy New Year, lads!
I love how Dan is just cheesing his pants when the fuzz and good tone kicks in😂 You’re a legend Dan. Great video lads. Never thought Mick would actually sit down and use midi! But hey, we did survive 2020....or did we...? Duh duh duh
I got my BigSky, Timeline, Mobius and TomatoTone all MIDI'd together with the G3 and I'm ready to give this MIDI stuff a try. I'm going to add an expression pedal soon. Time to watch this video again for both tutorial and inspirational benefit. I love when technology supports creativity, so often the two are at odds. Here's to a peaceful melding of my tech and creative brain parts...cheers :-)
Oh, when Dan tells Mick there is a new MIDI standard on its way....😁epic! Thanks guys again for a great show! Happy New Gear, best wishes for the year to come!
First off, can we acknowledge how ridiculously unreal these sounds are? Second, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! If this is any indication of what’s ahead this year, at least I know the next twelve months will sound epic. All my love.
A massive massive thank you to Dan + Mick and the TPS team for my Tshirts/Card for Christmas! My gf Katie ordered some Tshirts and stickers for me and I didn't expect to get a little card from you guys as well! Thank you thank you soooo much! You totally made my day and its the best present I ever got! Thank you so much for the amazing year of content and I hope you had an amazing Christmas and I cant wait to see what you guys can achieve in 2021 :) Thank you so much!
Happy Next Year Dan & Mick. Those tomato-type pedals really are something else - with your switcher infinately versatile. Good old (literally) MIDI - who'd have thought it would take so long to introduce v2 of an industry standard (thats a joke - you have to get a LOT of people to agree - thats hard - keeping some form of compatibility between v1 and v2 even harder so you can mix and match old/new devices). The whole start at 0, stems from how things are represented in a computers memory. You need to introduce a Gig Rig Midi-enabled kettle - that could keep Mick interested...
I do midi with 3 awesome Boss midi pedals. The combination of the RV500, DD 500 and EQ 200 is amazing. Being able to use the 10 band graphic to eq every effect. It is so simple to program and use with my Atom. Because of midi I only need the Atom as I have saved so many pedals.
What a way to start the new year, done well guys! I also love how Dan all the way through is doing his paitent Yoda thing while Mick just gets lost in sounds ^_^
2021 - the year of MIDI Mick ;-). Great show for both demoing the excellent Gigrig loopers and lifting the lid a little of MIDI capability. Happy New Year and I look forward to another year of TPS enlightenment
Very interesting video. Thanks lads. I’m not near the point where I’d need or use this type of gear, but the video did answer several questions I had about switchers/midi
New Year, new skills for Mick !!, this episode shows the incredible flexibility and innovation in the G3 units, such a brilliant piece pf kit, well done to Dan and all at GigRig, I would deffo need to study the manual for ages before I could get my head around how it works if I purchased one !! :)
Happy New Year! 🥳 I don’t gig (even pre-pandemic) and have found switchers to be so great for at home jams, recording, and sound exploration. Then you throw in the fact using banks and presets for live situations and song sets...I’m sold many times over. One more thing to throw in with switchers (which I thought G3 does) is the ability to reorder the loops. For those slapback before overdrive sounds 😊
Great video. So many uses for MIDI. I am currently using a board with my favorite OD/Distortion pedals (yes, plural), my favorite Delay (Timeline), a very unique chorus (GTI!), reverb (not midi yet, that is still coming!), with my HX Effects to bring it all together. I use the HX Effects primarily for compression, EQ and MIDI (per preset!), which controls the Timeline and routing options. I might also thrown in some special before-the-preamp effects like tremolo, octave and even more boost stages. And of course, the HX Effects has all the preset capabilities I could every use. All fits on a Powertrain mid size board, powered by Cioks. I can get a HUGE number of sounds and textures, instantly recallable using a click, and/or be in stomp mode as well. Did I mention it is all in stereo, using a modified four-cable method, as well? MIDI rocks, and I am using it in a fairly simple way. Never going back to a board with 15+ pedals and the associated tap-dance-of-death.
On the theme of tech and automation: I had auto-captions still turned on from another video and they detected Mick’s guitar saying the word “foreign” at around the 0:30 mark.
I'd love to sit down with Dan and my current set up, and pick his brain over these sorts of options, sounds and control using a switcher and MIDI. I had a few moments during this video where my mind was opening up to new ideas within my own rig, and judging by Mick's face at certain points, he was having the same sort of thoughts too! Great video guys, trouble is, my shopping list has just got longer and a lot more expensive! Happy New Year ya pair o' bastards!
This video confirmed what i have long known. That is, i have more chance of becoming Pope than even thinking about midi. Still a good watch though guys. Educational as always.

@@ThatPedalShow I was definitely hearing the Landau. Someone's got the Live 2000 in their car. ;-)
Thank you Dan & Mick I finally understand the difference between the loops presets and banks in G3/G3 atom after watching this again
I bought a Tomatotone thinking I could sell all my other overdrives to pay for it. Yeah, right. It’s just a chance for TPS-inspired “better questions.” Like: what would KOT>TTone in KOT mode>Klon sound like? Now I have a Gladio on order. Damn you TPS for opening the rabbit hole. I’ve never had so much gearhead fun.
So true!
I encouraged everyone to at least try it, it's your greatest arsenal waiting to be discovered
Happy new year TPS Community.
I can tell Mick likes those pedals from the intro. Fantastic.
I can tell I liked those pedals from the intro as well. Immaculate tone. Really special
@@markpfeffer7487 good point actually lol
At $1000-$1300 CAD a pop, he'd better like them.
This is the best sounding pedal board I have ever heard! It's Jan 1, 2021 and the future is here and it's on that pedal board!
Like mostly everything in life it is a compromise but an active choice...;-)
Thank you guys, I owe you a couple of songs!
Love.
Klod
Sweet! Sounds great Klod - thank you for the comments and kind words!
Oh dear Ross, we are sorry! Ha! Happy new year sir!
"I bought a MIDI!"
"Righto then. Put it in the cupboard with the others."
"Yes dear".
A True Story from My Life.
Happy New Year to all.
Between G3 and Chase Bliss I'm just in awe. Really cool stuff and in such a compact package!
THANK you Dan. It’s starting to sink in. This vid will be viewed repeatedly.
Thanks so much Patrick! It’s a massive subject so we just tried to go at a pace that made sense to us anyway. Happy new year!
@@ThatPedalShow Have a relaxing break! Happy New Year!
Mick, you're absolutely super sillyous. It's one of the many reasons we love you.
Thank you! Hahaha!
I see Mick going down a massive rabbit hole in 2021 and emerging in 2022.
Weirdly this one doesn’t feel like a rabbit hole. It’s more like a winding cut through to a supermassive highway. In a 600hp V8. Ha!
@@ThatPedalShow and I can hear some serious Pink Floyd sounds coming out those CBA pedals. Please excuse me while I go and cut up my bank cards.
(Plus my 6 other non-midi drive pedals, comp, pog, wah....)
I have pre-set for every song in every set.
Cheers
: )
Aw Mick. I see your heart sinking with every bit of midi information Dan gives you.
Welcome Sean! My first Strat was that colour I think. A Japanese 70s reissue. Nice! Cheers!
The G3 is a genius piece of kit.
Dan here, thanks 🙏
@@ThatPedalShow I'm ordering one soon. The dream rig I imagine in my head wouldn't work without one. Take care!
I just got a G3 and I would agree that the biggest surprise to me is the tone improvement. First time using any switcher
Midi Mick? As if the world isn't crazy enough at the moment!
Does he get a spandex suit and a cape?
@@Medieval_Arpad_cooks NO CAPES
Next thing you know he’ll be breaking out the Jem!
Maybe this is rather the world firing thrusters to correct itself.
Ha! Awesome! Mick here. We never expected it to be a big show, but it’s an important one. :0)
That rig sounds so clear and incredible.
I hope Chase Bliss holds off on a modulation automotone pedal so you guys can enjoy your new Jam collab for a bit ;)
So perfectly timed to what I've been researching as the next evolution in my own pedalboard! Always informative, always humorous, and always loved is TPS. Happy New Year, guys!
And to you Scott!
Thanks. I have hundreds of hours programming scenes in Line 6 gear, but I have never touched midi. Greatly appreciated.
54:44 “And there was my fuzz.”
Reminds me so much of the Welshism: “I opened the door and there was my bike; gone!”
Happy New Year everyone.
Yep! Example: the Digitech Whammy! (v5 at least)
Bloody ‘ell guys! Well done!! 👌 I’ve watched it twice now and I think I get at least half of it.
Love you, guys! Happy new year!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
If MIDI requires Mick to play while wearing reading glasses, I fear it may not be for me.
Love Mick's liner notes on this one.
So cool to see two mates chilling and enjoying some guitar!
I love how Dan is just cheesing his pants when the fuzz and good tone kicks in😂 You’re a legend Dan.
Great video lads. Never thought Mick would actually sit down and use midi! But hey, we did survive 2020....or did we...?
Duh duh duh
Happy New Year guys from NYC. You both made last year tolerable in lieu of everything bad. Here’s to a better 2021
Very best wishes for the new year, Dan and Mick. Crack on to even greater success!
First off, can we acknowledge how ridiculously unreal these sounds are? Second, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! If this is any indication of what’s ahead this year, at least I know the next twelve months will sound epic. All my love.
Happy new year Aaron! Yeah man!
Nice one Daniel, and thank you Katie! Happy new year to you both!
Wasn’t expecting a video til next week. 2021 is surprisingly pleasant so far.
I got a new pair of AKG headphones for Christmas. Listenig to that intro alone with those was a delight!
Love the star wars style old school flip transitions
Wow the flexibility with midi and the automatone along with G3 is truly awesome.
Mick does midi?! A brave way to start the year, especially after 2020 😁😁😁 very helpful episode! Happy new year guys!
Cheers guys, comprehensible tech overview and swoonsome tones. Bullseye!
I went crosseyed for a minute watching this, but it resolved by the end. I kind of get it now.
Very interesting video. Thanks lads. I’m not near the point where I’d need or use this type of gear, but the video did answer several questions I had about switchers/midi
Well I had a moment when the FF was kicked in at 20:34. Just beautiful.
New Year, new skills for Mick !!, this episode shows the incredible flexibility and innovation in the G3 units, such a brilliant piece pf kit, well done to Dan and all at GigRig, I would deffo need to study the manual for ages before I could get my head around how it works if I purchased one !! :)
HAPPY NEW YEAR, TPS!!! Thank you for years of inspiration, entertainment and terrible GAS!
How do you set the Automatone controls to 2 o’clock?
Two thirds of the way up. :0) not quite the same tho. Ha!
Really interesting guys. G2/G3 has always gone over my head. It’s actually super intuitive!
Jason Clute G2 & G3 allow you to reorder 👍
Congrats Mick! My brain left the building if not earlier then at 47.00 --> All the best and love! :-)
That’s what I always thought. Mick here. Papacy 0 MIDI 1
@@ThatPedalShow maybe when i “make it”. Then I’ll just give lots of brown folding stuff to a tech and say “please make my rig do this” :)
