- The Telecaster is Dan’s favourite guitar of all time ever. What are the rest of us missing?
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! A little while back we did a video on Strats, my favourite guitar (Mick here). You can watch it here: • Let’s Talk About Fende...
After doing that, we received loads of questions asking for a show on Telecasters, Dan’s favourite guitar. So here it is!
A bit like me with Strats, Dan has a fairly narrow aperture of what he wants in a Tele, so don’t be expecting Nashville-three-pickups, four-way switching or anything else that’s too much outside of the vintage formula. That said, we do take in a bunch of guitars across a massive price range that have a variety of timber and pickup differences.
It remains astonishing to us that this thing that debuted in 1950 remains one of the most versatile, expressive and widely used electric guitars across all genres of music - often in largely unchanged form - to this day. Let’s hear it for the Not-So-Humble-Telecaster!
Please enjoy the episode!

I had surgery and ordered a Squier Bullet Telecaster to enjoy in recovery. It was delivered the day I was re-admitted into hospital with an infection. Today is the day I get to go home and see my family and also unbox my new Tele. This is the perfect episode to watch while I wait for my last dose of antibiotica before they let me go.
Ugh. Infection. Glad you are still with us. Maybe I should get a Tele in this lifetime? 🤔
Hope you have a fast and full recovery, Dale!
Enjoy your new tele. I got a Squier contemporary, my first guitar, a couple of weeks back.
Get well soon, Dale!
Thanks for the well wishes, means alot. I have unboxed it, IT'S A TELECASTER! £139 in white with maple neck and black gaurd. It's amazing what you can get for the money these days. Can recommend to anyone who wants a wallet friendly guitar.
No matter what guitar you put it against, RED always sounds 10 out of 10....
Finally someone brings up the topic of tone paint.
Growing up dreaming of a Black Beauty, Red is now basically the reason why I only really want a decent Tele and... That will just about do. Hahahaha
I think it goes up to 11, Red is a monster out this world.
Red guitars are the fastest.
Red is part of Dan by this point.
I firmly believe that having less choices most often leads to more creativity. Too many choices leads to overthinking things and not getting on with it. Hence, the perfection of this instrument, in my book.
I agree, for a while I chased pedals and guitars with as many knobs and features as possible and usually would end up just constantly changing shit around because it all sounded good but I couldn't decide which setting sounded BEST lol so it was paralyzing. Now I'm much happier with an esquire and phasing out the overly complicated pedals and doing more actual playing
As someone once said, “too much knowledge leads to confusion, too many guitar lessons leads to jazz fusion “.
I wholeheartedly agree
Having more choices is okay as long as you understand these choices. A tone stack in a preamp section helps a lot as long as you understand the end sound. I wouldn't call a Telecaster "perfection" because there are obvious things that it cannot do. That said, I have been gravitating towards playing a Telecaster more and more because it's so simple and predictable. You work with the guitar more instead of trying to force the guitar to work for you.
TRUE.
Dan always looks like he's having the time of his life when he's playing Red.
I am 😆👍
Find someone that looks at you the way Dan look at Red :D
I don't blame him
Dan's enthusiasm is contagious. I love this show, and I'm a lifelong Tele player as well. Nothing does what a Tele does.

Love the look of pure joy on Dan's face when he revels playing a Tele..lol
Those pedal steel intro licks by Dan were totally on point. As we'd expect. To segue that immediately into the Tele as a rock tool shows why it's so popular.
Hucking Fell the outro riffage was mighty. Red is truly something else.
Cheers mate, yeah, Red has something unique going on, love that guitar
As much as I love watching you guys sit and talk about the different sounds different specs/pickups/pedals can generate, I must say it was a wonderful treat to hear Dan play so beautifully at the end of the video! I would love to get the chance to see you guys play live someday!
Utterly enjoyed that! Great sounds at the end there Dan, loved it. Also learned a great deal about the different pick-ups.
The acting delivery of Dan's first spoken line here puts Sir Laurence Olivier to shame.
I couldn't understand what he said before "Dan here".
I'm actually Tele shopping right now because of that Isbell model, perfect timing for this video, thanks!
Wow, great show!!
Dan, what an performance at the end there..
I didn’t know what to expect, that felt like I was in the room with you! Really enjoyed that little jam at the end!
Thanks guys, great topic, the strat one was great too!
Mick and Dan... you guys never cease to amaze me. You are both just as entertaining as you are informative. I have been subscribed to your channel for quite some time, but invariably, more times than not I come across one of your episodes while I am searching for something else guitar/amp/pedal related, then I'm off watching and listening for ~45 minutes, all the while with a smile on my face and in my heart. Simply a joy to watch... all the way from Central Indiana. Thank you so much for your continued efforts and passions!
Dan is such a brilliant guitar player. Thanks for this beautiful video.
Oof. That closing little jam on Red was fantastic. I wanna hear the rest of that album!
Cheers matey 🤓🙏
You guys are the best. Thank you for helping me learn more about guitars, pedals and how I want a tele. Love the show as always. Cheers boys!
The inevitable TPS "my guitar" deep-dive sequel, so good! Definitely plain to see you both have bonded with your instrument of choice, I've never watched a TPS episode without learning more than I can come away with. Will need to revisit this when messing with the t-type in my house.
Dan has been putting in some time, eh? Good to see something else positive coming out of these past couple of months/years. The improvement is very noticeable!! And Dan was already a fantastic player! This is another level.
Ah, cheers mate, having a go 🤓🙏
Those bends in the intro jam were intense!
Dan is just KILLING it!
@@ThatPedalShow Dan, you have been bowling me over with your skill for many a year. Hello from the land of oz.
ah!! Yes!!!one of life's small pleasures!! an hour of Tele talk with two of my most favourite guys on a Friday night. I think the backyard patio was most definitely made for nights like this! Can't wait to dig in with a frosty beverage. Thanks starting the weekend off right Gents!!
Oh, thank you so much for the tele variant! What a great show! What a great guitars! What a great music! What a great guys!!!)
Amazing Tele-Tips and Tele-Tones! Great video, so much to learn!
That direct, no hiding sound is definitely what gets me. The Roy Buchanan blowing minds and never really needing to sing bc the guitar’s doing all the talking thing… so good
Not to mention he almost always used just the guitar and amp! Insane versatility just by using attack and a couple of knobs.
I prefer the butterscotch 50's custom shop tele. That one sounds amazing to me.
Its nice to see how you both surprise each others always with sharing your guitars :D
Loved this vid, cheers. I'm expecting a Tele arrival this week. Have been looking for one since discovering this channel and hearing the great sounds Dan gets out of his :-)
Dan, your jam at the end was stunning. I loved everything about this episode. And every episode. Since my divorce 5 years ago, I dove Back into guitar. I am so analytical that I need to know how everything works and why. You and mick have taught me so much over the last few years. I can’t even begin to say thank you enough. You both have gotten me through such hard times and I now look at both of you as my own brothers. Thank you so much. And God bless you both :)
Ah, cheers David, thanks so much 🤓🙏
Right there with you.
Chinese guitar, lol
Watching this waiting for my first tele in the mail tomorrow! Definitely on the lower end lol a bullet but I'm excited all the same
Beautiful show guys
This is so interesting, this episode made me love my Reverend Tele even more ! Beautiful playing at the end Dan, what a feeling.
The jam at the end made me subscribe. Awesome show guys!
"It's a combination of whatever it is that gives this guitar a certian thing". It's for these incisive gems that I keep coming back to this channel x
LOVE this show!! I am the telecaster nutter called TeleCathster! I love teles and my name is Cath aka Catherine. You guys have often commented on my sign on name for when I’ve super chatted so thought I’d finally explain and this was the perfect episode! Thanks for all your expertise on answering my questions on live Q&A! I have 15 teles in all pickup configurations and different woods with some being custom made by local luthier. The best guitar that does everything! Keep safe lads!
Absolutely love my teles. When I can't play. I watch this and I'm in my happy place. Cheers guys. You are awesome.
Lovely playing and I enjoyed your reviews on the guitars. Very positive. Thankyou.
Worth noting that Jack Pearson uses Squire Bullets (teles and strats) as well as high end guitars and he sounds great on either end of the price scale (it’s all in the fingers). Great show as always guys!
That switch to neck pick-at 51:30 was absolutely beautiful tone. Could’ve listened to that the whole time
Dan, you rocked that Tele intro! Nicely done!
Currently building a tele as a birthday present for my dad. This is inspiring me to work that little bit harder! Fascinating insights.
IMO Butters is the best guitar in your collection. The bridge is perfectly bright without being brittle and the neck is dark, woody with lots of depth without being muddy. If I came across that guitar, i would not leave without it. Thank god you guys are across the pond!
Jim Weider said it best when he said “if you don’t have a toothbrush and a telecaster you”re in trouble” great episode
I'm not a huge fan of teles and am definitely more of a strat guy but Dan's enthusiasm and excitement when talking about or playing teles is infectious! This video put a smile on my face and made me want a tele! 😀 Great content as always!
This episode was really really good guys! Thank you! enough said.👍
Been playing a G&L ASAT as my main for about 6 years now. Absolutely love that guitar and the MFD pickups (mine has the small/tele sized ones). Took some time to grow into them, but once I properly started relying on my volume/tone controls… wow they cover so much ground.
I was in a rock band with three guitarists. All telecasters, all different with a distinct sound. A 2000’s American standard which was warm and clear, a 70’s with maple neck which was brash and spanky, and an ASAT custom classic which was smooth and right in the middle. It’s an amazing guitar and perfect for so many situations.
I was stoked to hear you mention Pedal Empire in Brisbane at the end - I just bought my first Tele from them - a beautiful CIJ ash body left handed vintage style with solid one-piece neck/board from about ‘99-‘02. Absolutely gorgeous guitar.
Watching this episode again because i'm just about to purchase a 60's classic vibe (double bound). The edit when Dan is reminiscing on the Tele Plus is gold haha
Pointing out Tim Lurch was an excellent call, such a wonderful player, can listen to him all day.
Very enjoyable as usual. Dan is certainly a Telemaster! His unbridled joy comes through and it’s really great to see. I also liked that you covered a range from obscenely expensive to really very affordable and Dan’s daughter’s Squier proved it is a great framework with just a pickup change. Be well my friends!
Cheers Ross, certainly was a fun one 🤓👍
Thanks for this video. Loved the jam at the ending.
Another great episode hope you guys continue these and do one for LPs
17 minutes in. My favorite part of this video so far is Mick’s enthusiasm in making the guitar exchanges; as though he can’t wait to hear the next one. Cheers from the Big Apple.
Yep! I’m a great guitar exchanger!
@@ThatPedalShow your huge smile through this was just fantastic!
Less than 2 minutes and I'm clicking "thumbs up." Soul piercing intro.
What a couple of outstanding gents! Great videos as always guys!
Cheers JC
50:24 - Some of the finest playing I've heard Dan ever do. Some reminisce of one of my fav Tele players of all time Tim Bricheno from All About Eve 😎😀
"Butters" every day of the week for me! Ted Greene, Tim Lerch, Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Jim Campilongo....
I'm a big fan of the 4-way switch also on my black guard.
I honestly can’t tell them apart… although I love telecasters and love watching countless guitar videos. I’m beginning to realize that most of the time we are just knit picking at sounds, when really there isn’t much difference at all! Just good sounding telecasters
thats not true... red and butter are night and day.
@@keithchang8566they’re not though.
I think a lot of times what ppl attribute to sound is usually more about how it feels to play/how the pickups play. A tele is supposed to sound like a tele so theyre all gonna sound the same more or less
@@keithchang8566they are just different pickups dude
There's a reason why Greg Koch designed his fishman fluence pickups to be voiced "50s" and "60s". "A tele is going to sound like a tele" is valid when you're comparing a tele with other guitars. But in this case, I wasn't.@@ThruThaRoofComedy
Great show, guys! And awesome to hear the Tim Lerch shoutout! I got my first tele this past November, a pine pro-2 in sienna burst, because I wanted something for jazz fingerstyle that would be really versatile. The neck pickup for jazz is just stellar (I usually play it through my 76 champ with an alnico Jensen speaker). Lerch was one of the people who convinced me on that front, and in that video he wasn’t even using the Charlie Christian pickups.
But speaking of versatility: I was astounded by how much I liked bridge pickup - killer for rock and even metal (I’m also a metal guy, and I run my tele through a Kraken 50 head and love it).
jez....... just sat through one hour of this video....... loved every second of it, so informative, could feel the Tele love coming through..... one of the best guitar videos I have ever seen, full stop...... thanks guys.............
First electric guitar I ever played was a Fender Tele a friend of mine's dad had in his house. I went out and bought myself a blue Squier Tele straight away. It was my first guitar. I've had numerous guitars ever since but nothing beats a Tele. 10 years on, it's still the GOAT.
That purple squier tele sounds great. Already sounded great unplugged!
Love this show!
*had to come back and edit! *
So many great guitars here. That Jason Isbell really jumped out from the crowd. Sounded great. That ASAT really sounded great too.
Man, completely agree about the tone control. I'm modding all mine to take the neck pu off the tone pot. Been on my list forever - one of these days!
I love it when guitars from the 50s and 60s are run through modern pedalboards/effects/OD and whatnot, that Leo Fender, Les Paul, etc, never could have imagined. Yesterday, I was watching some dropped-D metal coming out of an old, beat-up 60s SG. Love it! Talk about standing the test of time.
I just added the new j.masics Tele. Really diggin' it a lot. Neck is phenomenal. Only thing that needs immediate attention is that STUPID out-of-phase deal happening with the middle position. Fixing that post haste!
I really hope enough people have the time to watch this in its entirety. It's such a great overview of teles. Also made me want one of those purple bullets lol
I love love love Teles. Throughout my playing life I’ve loved squeezing every sound imaginable out of such a simple guitar.
I'm all in - bought 3 so far this year (if a Joe Duplantier configuration counts... I say, IT DOES!)
--- was hoping you would do one of these, having enjoyed the strat one so much, and enjoying Micks vid about his new Tele very much.
COOL!
- stay cool, safe, and healthy guys.
Dan is right about the particular few components being important in the Tele design. Saddles, Pickup & Bridge plate like he said.. I reckon the thin ashtray vintage ones have an extra charm too. Even though it's been celebrated frequently it begs repeating, that red tele really is something special.. What a gem. The frequency output seems to be balanced in just the right way to produce such a pleasing tone. The other ones demonstrated are quite different aren't they?.. I find that so fascinating. Thanks guys for a great companion piece to the Strat show a while back. You two really manage to illuminate the points you make here and also illustrate things so well which is a testament to the natural skills and pure energy you two possess as people. Always a fun & educational watch, and as jaded as I can be, I always find something humbling to appreciate in these shows. Thanks for the years of service/duty guys. Lots of love :)
These past two episodes have been nothing short of outstanding. Truly wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks Michael 🤓👍
Love me a good Tele! I've got 3. An American Special with Texas Specials, a Noventa with a P90, and a Suhr Alt T with humbuckers. All sound and play great!!
I'm sure I am missing a few, but here are the Telecaster Jazz musicians that jump to mind: Mike Stern, Howard Roberts, Ted Greene, Danny Gatton, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, and believe it or not, lately a bit of John Scofield too. This was a great episode!
Many feel the Tele neck pickup is the perfect marriage for Jazz!
Presently researching what bits and pieces to attach to a lump of ash I made up as a new body to my first guitar - a tele copy.. love the neck. Hope I can do it justice with the rest of the bits! Love these videos moving through general principles and letting us hear the idiosyncrasies, variations and nuances they all have, so thank you :)
I just received my Tele Ultra in arctic white with the S1 switch and it sounds and plays awesome, and the new radius neck is a dreamy thing! Thank you both!
Dan's playing was off the scale good in the play out at the end. Great video guys. I'm a strat guy that owns a Tele thanks to this channel and it's a great guitar so thanks.
Thanks Darren 🤓🙏
Best playing I’ve heard from Dan, and that Bullet Squier really held its own to be fair.
I have the Andertons Danish Pete Squier also: love it! Didn't expect to love it... upgraded to Twisted Tele neck and 51 Nocaster bridge pups, also the electronics and the nut. Loved it even more. Tele's for life! :)
Great video. I will always love my Tele, not only for how it sounds but also for how the body feels.
I love my Schecter PT special. Even with a pickup swap to Fishman Gristletones, it retains a certain mellow, smooth character. A great bang for the buck t shaped object. Ash body, alnico pups stock, contoured neck heel, etc.
Always good to see an ASAT cameo. 👍
that clean sound with the chorus was just amazing!
Questions answered, speculations satiated & thoughts provoked...Bravo Gents!
The passion you demonstrate for your favorite red Tele is by far the greatest audible difference heard in this comparison. A brilliant guitar with a heavy dose of musical spirit. Almost brought a tear to this old mans eye. Thank you both for your dedication to this instrument.
What an intro DAN THE MAN!🤘
Man, they all sounded good or great. I was really impressed with the Jason Isbell and the G&L models but Red, Butters, and the original 65 all sounded amazing. Fantastic playing throughout! Thanks for a really fun video guys.
Soooo enjoyed Dan's outro - had to play it over again. Thanks guys.
Although you can tell the difference between the Squire and Fender, it is amazing how technology has improved cheap guitars.
And if you upgrade the tuners and pickups, you have closed 75% of the gap. Swapping the electronics too, probably closes 90-95% of the gap. Definitely diminishing returns after that!
@@CraigsWorkshop I own two early Squire classic vipes telecasters made in China.
Both very proper produced.
Only changed pu with a bit more bite on one of the guitars, that' s all I had to improve.
Of course you can argue a good Fender custom shop has this little" I can' t tell what it is" extra but it' s not worth enough to pay thousends more quids for it.
That outro is mesmerizing. Still waiting for Dan's lesson on fancy chords, BTW...
Great episode, guys. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Thanks Ricardo, I’m happy to put something together, let me work on it 🤓🙏
@@ThatPedalShow If you find the time, I'm sure everyone would love it. Either way, it's always a delight to watch you guys on here, regardless of the content. Really appeciate it.
Cheers
Great video. It is amazing how the inexpensive guitar(s) held their own. I was shocked. Boy those 2 amps with the Protein pedal….killer !!! Thanks guys. You rock as always.
Great episode! The best tip for a Tele is indeed as you say to set your amp to give you a nice neck pickup tone, but then when you switch to the bridge pickup just roll back the tone control a bit so it takes some off the treble off. That purple Squier sounded really good too, held its own again some really expensive guitars.
Only a few minutes in. Butters knocks politely, Red kicks the door down!!
Love both, but for different reasons.
Dan, Dan, DAN!!! You absolutely killed it on the intro playing, running the gamut from sweet and tasty to sultry and brutal. I am late to the Tele party, but I got my first recently -- just a MIM Special Edition, but it sounds beautiful, and I am totally hooked. I'm sure there will be others to come...
There's no such thing as "just" an MIM. My Mexican tele has some serious growl, even without an amp.
@@benashton3691 Well, yes, absolutely, I wouldn't doubt it. The MIM guitars are fantastic, at least as good as any American (non-custom shop) Telecaster. I guess my intent wasn't clear - the "just" was meant to emphasize how great the guitar is at a comparative price point far lower than its American Counterparts. I love my Tele - best sounding and playing guitar I own (and I have Les Pauls and quite a few other premium guitars). Just picked up a Strat Player Plus MIM, too, and it's amazing.
I love to muck about with telecasters, tweaking and changing everything. It's such a simple guitar, but so nuanced and versatile. Recently I've been messing around with removing tone knobs, so I will definitely try the 'no neck tone' mod you spoke of. Great video guys!
Lovely playing and tones at the end Dan! Cheers guys! Great show!
Cheers bud 🙏
Killer video. Let’s not forget, we can also add a 5-way switch wiring to our beloved teles. Options are endless.
Just wanted to say, Dan’s red tele (and Pete’s purple one….. and Greg K’s red over white one…) gave me so much ‘gas’ 4 years ago…. So I bought a used post modern custom shop from Anderson’s in 2017. I’ve done 90+ gigs with since then. It really does do everything but more importantly it’s the only guitar I own that I truly connect with. It puts out exactly what I put in. Thanks TPS for helping me find me.
Waaaay cool Simon. Glad you’re digging it! Mick here.
@@ThatPedalShow Thanks Mick. I just looked back at some photos and it was early 2017 when I bought it. Where has the time gone!!?
I had the same thing happen with Micks strat blue . I spent a long long time getting one that made me feel like I did watching Mick play his blue
I love the Happy Santa smile Dan has in the begging w Red. Classic. :)
Disconnecting the neck pickup from the tone knob gave me a lot to think about. Makes a lot of sense. Immediately picked up my Baja tele (which I'm convinced is the best guitar ever made) and started messing around with tone and volume. Thanks for an awesome episode!
Please bring back the Pick n' Mix series. Those were so satisfactory to watch.
I'm with you. I would much rather watch a pick 'n mix than a 2-3 hour q&a.
One of my favorite episodes you have ever done. Of course, I’m biased as I own 7 teles….I especially appreciate that you tried affordable teles as well
I like the double cut telly on your avatar👍🏼
Hey Mick and Dan love watching y'all's shows. You two are so humble and truthful to y'all's own style of playing which is cool and don't see that much. I'm reaching out to y'all from Albany KY . A good friend of mine got a hold of a fender tele that was in dire need of some tlc and he knew I did some lutheir work on my own guitars and asked me if I would do some work on the tele that had been left strung and unplayed for untellin how long. The strings were rusty and was starting to corrode and pit the frets and I love guitars and it broke my heart to see such an awesome guitar in that shape so I said yea I'll take it and work on it. Cleaned fret board, adjusted truss rod to get neck flat and re leveled , crowned and polished the frets and etc... About 4 hours of work and plugged it in and played my first tele and loved it. Loved it so much I had to take it to him that same day I got done with it or I would have kept it and not gave it back. LOL 🤣 ... It was sweet . I was hooked. So couple weeks later I decided to build me one. I've always been a strat and lespaul guy till that and now when I play I find myself 97 percent of the time playing the tele and I don't know what it is about the tele but it's a special kind of tone that just rocks in any genre of music. What is it about the tele.
Nice playing Dan! I've just acquired my first Tele ever and tuned in to this maestro noodling which proves that the Telecaster is an AWESOME weapon of choice! I've been playing electrics for 50 years and never even picked up a Tele before, so I'm truly spellbound at the brilliance and sparkle of this instrument. It's a Player series MiM and sounds every.bit as spunky as this episode reveals. Why oh why did I wait so long....
Loved this episode just as much as the Strat episode. I can relate after having been a Strat player for most of my life and suddenly trying out a Tele that literally BLEW MY MIND! My Tele is now my #1 guitar and I play it about 90% of the time. My Strat is now my backup guitar. Teles friggin' ROCK!
Why? I have both and I just find them to be different, hard to see why one is better...
@@pb25193
I agree, I love them both, but I find myself using the Tele about 90% of the time because I am really connected to it.
@@joequintana5546 is it because of any particular song?
@@pb25193 nope.
I usually play every song with the same guitar. It makes no difference if I take a Strat or a Tele. But the Tele inspires me more than the Strat does. It's exciting and super simple.
@@pb25193 I played Strats almost exclusively for more than 25 years.
Dan really ‘Cut the Cake’ this episode (pun intended). As a non-tele player this was fascinating! Great episode and the outro, well no more needs to be said. Spectacular!
Cheers RDB 🤓🙏
@@ThatPedalShowUpdate I’ve now bought a Tele. And it’s AWESOME! It does everything, and it sounds like me and only me. I didn’t get the Tele thing before, but now I get it. I haven’t picked up my Les Paul or Strat since getting it

Both of you gentlemen have got me on this one. I love my strat and my tele. The best of both worlds. 😅rock on, brothers.
