      Summer has actually become pretty easy. Me and a friend decided to test cave basing in the lunar grotto. Stone fruit drops during cave ins, mole bats for monster meat, and plentiful mushrooms for filler in crockpots. Plus it being guaranteed connected to the blue mushroom forest meant we could keep away gestalts and heal, or let the gestalts boost your sanity with their aura when you want to leave. Easy sanity control, easy healing sources, and tons of food literally raining from the sky. Not to mention free living logs, thulecite, and close access to the ruins.

      Same. Only recently i've learned how to tank Deerclops and felt confident to try it. I always runned away from my base and waited for the night. But she would always got stuck doing something else, so i had to get her attention and run to the fire, but that could sometimes get me in trouble cuz my sanity would be empty by the time i killed her. I've died more than once to shadow creatures after the Deerclops fight. But then again, i'm not the best player there is.

    Would love to see an intermediate guide as a followup to this covering more farms and other things to sustain a long term playthrough. That's the part of the game I get stuck on because I don't know what to do next, and a lot of your guides assume a high level of knowledge beyond this beginners guide that I don't have or start with the assumption that I'm much farther in my playthrough (and there's not a lot of guidance on how to get from here to there). I'm not sure how to get from this point to being able to confidently and sustainably tackle big bosses, the lunar island, etc.

    • @josephdantes1605
      @josephdantes1605 3 роки тому +4

      Intermediate gameplay is a bit complicated because there are a variety of objectives and you'll have the resources and knowledge to carry out any of those plans. (ex. ruins rush, find lunar island, build a cave base, boats, magic items, base development, etc.).

    Tips:
    If you dont have any winter insulating clothing and you're not Wilson, don't worry! A 100% thermal stone is enough for you to travel decent distances, and once it turns yellow you can just burn a tree to recharge it pretty quickly. Since I didn't find beefalo yet on my Warly world I just had to use a thermal stone, and I could travel across half the map while only needing to burn a tree twice.
    Another excellent source of food is a volt goat pen! Kill all the volt goats except one, then once its sleeping cage it up with stone walls and a gate. It'll spawn another volt goat every two days, which can be killed for two big meats and sometimes a volt goat horn.
    Also, if you're a Warly like me, don't pick cactus for sanity and don't make a shit ton of pierogi. You can't eat cactus and pierogi will have the repeat dish penalty. For healing, instead make a tent at your base for when you want to passively regain health, and only eat three pierogi or two trail mix in each sitting so it doesnt become worthless for the extra repeats.

In my experience, one koala is more than a match for Mac, Mac Jr and the hounds they spawn with... though it's not guaranteed to work 100% of the time. Once the carnage is over, pop the fence open and reap the rewards!

      @JazzysGames  3 роки тому +2

      I'm actually not sure that it does, although I may have said that in a previous video. From what I can tell, the thermal stone has an innate insulation that is not affected by other clothing worn.

    • @m3gusta17
      @m3gusta17 3 роки тому +2

      Jazzy is correct, insulating clothing does NOT help Thermal Stones stay hot AT ALL.
      I dearly wish that they did, but they don't. And that's the reason I've stopped wearing insulating clothing along with Thermals; it keeps your body temperature up, sure, but since I hate losing Thermal Stone durability, I'm always reheating my Thermal when it's been yellow for too long anyways (or, if you use Combined Status, when body temperature drops below 30 while using a Thermal and zero insulating clothing -- that's a good benchmark for when to go reheat the Thermal)

    I would recommend to cook meaty stew whenever one can for hunger, since it basically doubles hunger value of meat used in the recipe and ice can be used as 4th ingredient, that way one won't need as much ice compared to meatballs and spend time to mine it, even for Wilson (despite bacon and eggs being favourite food, 150 is better than 90 hunger, just cook 2 for next 4 days and leave ingredients for next dishes in ice box) and Wigfrid (despite 120 maximum hunger, she is still profitting around 45 additional hunger, or +60% hunger value on average), and even if one lets meaty stew go stale it still gives 100 hunger, which is still better than fresh bacon and eggs/meatballs.
    As for sources of large meat - pigs, volt goats (one should leave 1 alive from each herd) and koalephants are providing more than enough large meat, and farming them gives useful additional products, such as pig skin, volt goat horns (and milk for ice cream once one horn has dropped and morning star was crafted), koalephant trunk (additional hunger + healing, winter one is good for winter insulation clothing).
    Also this guide assumes that one plays solo if I understand correctly, but players on public servers can't count on beefalo hat for everyone (usually attempts to farm beefalo horns lead to beefalo extinction), as well as on eyebrella for spring. Good alternative to that are puffy vest (same insulation as beefalo hat, + 2 sanity per minute, takes body slot, but has higher durability) for protection from freezing, and the best thing is koalephants can't go extinct completely, there will always be an option for hunt. For rain + lightning protection rain coat (body slot, protects as good as eyebrella, has higher durability) is good if there happen to be 2 tentacle spots in the swamp from all the fighting (and if not, I recommend to lead deerclops here - this way one can get rid of deerclops, not spend resources on armor and healing, make swamp less dangerous place, farm tentacle spots and tentacle spikes, weapon which doen't spoil, has decent damage and isn't locked behind shadow manipulator, doesn't drain sanity, damage doesn't depend on weather), rain hat (70% protection, but combined with standing under tree is good enough to start drying off) or umbrella + almost any helmet (although this combo doesn't protect from lightning). One shouldn't be afraid of giving up backpack slot, just plan next resource gathering trip ahead; also this opens an option for head light + cane/weapon/tool combo in harsh seasons, which is superior to lantern in vast majority of cases because one can use cane/weapon/tool and have light source on them moving with them, and light radius of miner hat doesn't become visually smaller the less fuel is left in it. If one manages to get moggles, they are good to use when one is close to be insane because of insanity filter.
    Also it shoud be noted that burning trees (2 in a row) or using magma pools allows to heat thermal stones to maximum temperature, and maximum level fire pit doesn't give as much heat (which means one has less time before thermals go cold and will need recharge), so to save resorces, it's better to drop thermal stone under the tree and lit it on fire, or base relatively close to dragonfly set piece and have multiple thermal stones heated up near magma pool.
    As for light, tip for beginners or not: have chest of lanterns/miner hats/moggles to reduce frequency of needing to go to the caves for fuel. Keep in mind that 1 full lantern/miner hat/moggles lasts 8 minutes (16 clock segments) and plan accordingly when to return to base/go to caves again.
    And one more thing people are often not aware off: its generally better to keep meats raw and cook over fire when they are spoiled, but monster meat is exception: it's better to cook it as soon as possible since raw mm spoils in 6 days, and cooked in 15 (has more than double durability of raw product). Unless one has enough drying racks for all the meat (btw, amazing structure), then it's better to keep meat raw as long as possible and then dry it to prolong it's lifetime.
    Edit: apparently I missed that it's guide for solo playthrough (sorry for that), but each of my points including body slot clothing still stands, since solo player can profit from head light just as well as team player (beefalo hat + lantern are good, don't get me wrong, but the more decent options mentioned, the better, no?). I also mentioned spring preparation because it's better to prepare to next season during the previous one, so spring strategy technically can be a part of winter guide.

      none of these are bad tips; however some of them are beyond the reach of beginners; btw, Jazzy also advises learning Meaty Stew in his "top foods for beginners" video, which he briefly references in this video.
      very few beginners are even gutsy enough to begin exploring the Caves beyond the vicinity of the sinkhole/stairs, let alone dare to fight a Depths Worm, so Moggles are out of the question for 95+% of newbies.

    • @alinashirokaya3954
      @alinashirokaya3954 3 роки тому

      @@m3gusta17 , regardless meaty stew I specifically mentioned it for Wilson and Wigfrid cases, which wasn't covered in "top foods for beginners";
      "very few beginners are even gutsy enough to begin exploring the Caves beyond the vicinity of the sinkhole/stairs" - and that they should change about their approach, since caves have a lot of valuable resources, such as reliable living logs, bunnymen (not as food, but more as fighters), early gems, lightbulb fields (enough to refuel full chest of lanterns/miner hats), fossils (good for ovens and blocking mobs in general), glow berries/lesser glow berries, etc. And since debth worms come in periodic attacks, beginner needs to know how to deal with them and how to utilize resources they drop, just like being beginner do not justify lack of knowledge of dealing with hounds.

      @@alinashirokaya3954 Thanks for the reply. There are so many good approaches to the early-game and making this series was one of the most challenging exercises in info consolidation I've ever undertaken. So I appreciate that there were plenty of good tips that I missed and that we can pick up some of the slack in these comments.
      As Megusta mentioned, I do cover the benefits of meaty stew in my guide to beginner CP recipes. Because I really had to pick and choose for this guide and keep it short enough I went with meatballs/pierogi, the simplest and IMO most important recipes. Winter is actually one of the few times where meatballs can be more efficient, since ice is very easy to acquire you can generate more hunger from three meatballs than you can from three pieces of meat. This is not the case with different filler. I would even argue that acquiring tons of ice is simpler and less dangerous for a beginner than large meat, but I do cover those other meat sources in early videos.
      If you watch the other videos in the series you might see a few of the other points addressed, but yeah it was going to become too long if I went into too many character-specific strategies or the multiplayer aspect. Regardless, you are correct that they are important points and I appreciate that you include them here. Thanks for the thoughts!

    • @alinashirokaya3954
      @alinashirokaya3954 3 роки тому

      @@JazzysGames , thank you for the guide, it's a good one, and I understand that it's hard to maintain balance between too much and too little information, especially since surviving season includes a lot of aspects, not only food, but temperature measurement, light, fighting (weapons and armor, common enemies behaviour), preparation for the next challenges (e.i. getting winter-specific resources and other particular resources), etc, and in each aspect there are a lot of details. But there is a problem I saw once I started playing on the pubs: beginners often know some piece of information, do ok things in terms of usefulness to survivial, but they don't pay attention to circumstances, and when the only ok method they know about stops to work/works less efficient, they are lost and don't know what to do, often die. That's why I wrote that comment, for potential beginners to have plan B in mind in case beefalos didn't drop horn, or if one doesn't have enough filler but has meat/way to get that meat (it might be actually faster to hunt koala and cook 4 meaty stew than mine ice for 9-10 meatballs). Speaking of efficiency: not only raw dish stats should be compared, but time and resources spend to get ingredients, as well as time to cook/eat all of that.
      As for ice mining, there are other useful things that can be done with it, so I try to preserve it, but I agree that it would be silly to die from starvation with all ingredients for meatballs available, even if it's meat and ice. What I'd like to add to this guide is to never run over open fire with ice in inventory (for example while burning entity to heat up thermal stone), because it looses a lot of freshness even if world temperature is still below 0. Another thing is to prototype golden pickaxe for all ice mining, or use multiple regular pickaxes until 3% durability is left and then craft thermal stones with them.
      I have a suggestion for future guide: comparison of pros and cons of different insulation strategies, weapons, armors, light sources, their combinations - like a table with stats and examples when this item/combo can be better than others, and when it's better to look for other option. If you consider that too much work, it's totally understandable though.
      Edit: about meaty stew, maybe I was just traumatized after playing on public server, when Wigfrid yelled at me "cook me only turkey dinner, it's my favourite food", even though I had ingredients for meatballs and meaty stew (I was Warly), and we were right next to bee biome (so potentially I could cook honey nuggets/ham).

But I still do have one major question that you would be able to answer better than most. How can I stay motivated in this game? Multiplayer is currently not an option for me; nobody I know is interested in the game. I just don't know how to motivate myself with a lot of parts of the game. So I was wondering: what kinds of things can I do to make the game more fun? I want to play as Warly or Wigfrid, but I've never practiced their strats, so I'm stuck starving after I run out of meat on Wigfrid, or when I forget how to make recipe #304 so I can no longer eat as Warly. I suppose trying that is a start, but what else can I do?

      I'm not Jazzy, so I'll let him answer your character-specific questions (but feel free to let me know if you want my take as well) -- but as far as your statement about nobody you know being interested in the game... I would recommend joining Jazzy's discord! He hosts a dedicated Endless server that his community plays on, and the vast majority of the players there are extremely friendly and helpful.
      I'd encourage you to give the discord a shot if you'd like to play with others! :)

      I've learned from experience that rot for bait can give you trouble. Rot stacks off screen with other rot, so it could combine with some outside of the pen and then your werepigs will go smash.

    Is the beefalo hat better than the football helmet?

    • @DragoSmash
      @DragoSmash 3 роки тому +2

      both items serve a different purpose, so they are not comparable
      Beefalo Hat helps you slow freezing, while the Football Helmet gives you damage reduction, during winter you carry both
      you put on the Beefalo Hat when you are walking around the map, and put on the Football Helmet when you are going to fight

      Ingredients in a crock pot that are not required of the recipe. For example, meaty stew needs 3 meat, but the fourth ingredient can be a filler such as egg, veggie, ice, etc.
