He'd been fine that morning (no, he hadn't had the vaccine!), looking forward to seeing his twin grandsons turn eight the next week, but not looking forward to going to hospital for a hernia operation. It's tricky... Is this a mental or physical reality? If physical, then we are what we eat and the food dictates how we manage the information. If mental, then we are what we learn, and the information dictates what we eat. Or can causation work in both directions? Is reality mental and physical?

Diet matters a great deal, but fasting can undo much of this damage. The biggest problem from poor diet today is liver fat, but when you fast the first place you lose fat is the liver because it is the liver that is responsible for producing glucose for the blood supply and it does so first from glycogen stores, and then it turns any internal liver fat into blood glucose. It also reverses scarring in the liver over time, and these are the main issues causing t2 diabetes. The many benefits of occasional extended fasting and lowering dietary carbs:
Your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies in a 72h fast, rejuvenating your entire immune system. This helps with autoimmune disease, cancers and cytokine storm.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion growths pathogens and plaques by macrophages and other immune cells. This will remove spikes quicker, whether natural or unnatural in origin!
Clots and plaques are removed over time due to accelerated phagocytosis.
Fasting reduces cortisol over time and improves your circadian rhythm.
Fibrosis aka scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart, lungs and clots.
When insulin is high, vit D stays locked in the blood cells but fasting quickly lowers it. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy.
Fasting restores NAD+ and increases nitric oxide release to open blood vessels.
Reflexes and short term memory are increased.
Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release!.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, reducing inflammation and allowing the immune bodies to move freely through the body.
T cells and T reg cells are vital in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infections. With age, the thymus stops making as many of them but fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. It also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus itself!
Fasting increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors and increases average telomere length in stem cell pools.
Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast but most teas and herbs are OK. Supplements and meds often break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building.
Fasting activates autophagy (literally self eating), which causes cells to recycle damaged proteins and foreign matter such as viruses.
Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body.
Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue!
The obese will lose loose skin while fasting, but the frail will have increased growth hormone release, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness.
Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility for some women.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitochondrial DNA. Good mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention!
24h of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function.
Over time fasting normalizes stomach acid levels and during the fast acid levels go down to allow for the healing of ulcers.
Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, just like the effect of CBD oil
Your brain prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal measure to glucose. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids.
Fasting increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood. This stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, which can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with.
Fasting stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting!
Glycine and trimethylglycine can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors that excrete insulin or certain rare forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all or only with doctor supervision. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis and done under doctor supervision. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast with a low carb meal.

If I had eaten the way the thing was then, with large and constant servings, I'd have been obese! Last year I went to my PCP as I was having muscle tension and aches and pains which were not normal for me. I was told by her that I was just getting old and to go home and take Tylenol or she could prescribe muscle relaxers for me. Mind you, no diagnosis was made. Ive been an athlete all my life and know my body well and did not accept this. I pushed her and eventually had blood work done where the results came back positive for inflammation for my ANA result.I asked her 2 years ago about seeing a health consultant or nutritionist and was told that was a waste of money. Again, not acceptable. After seeing a health consultant for 2 months I felt like a 30 year old man again. Diet and the right supplements along with detoxing metals from your body does wonders. I also found out I have something called Allergic Rhinitis caused by allergies here in Florida which also causes Body aches and inflammation. It is scary to even see a Doctor these days and even as my Doctor now says I am my own best Doctor and she is absolutely correct. Educate yourself people because Doctors are trained to treat your symptoms and not to cure you...The scariest place to be is in a hospital......

Not only are the fine folks at the NEJM not addressing the tsunami of ultra-processed food (i.e. artificial crap), but in the first paragraph they say that HIGH salt, LOW whole grain and LOW fruit are part of a "suboptimal" diet. First of all, restricting salt in the diet actually stimulates HYPERTENSION via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone sysytem. Secondly, are these nutrition "experts" really suggesting we eat lots of whole grains and fruits (i.e. lots of CARBOHYDRATES) when 85% of American adults are already INSULIN RESISTANT. As a nursing student, I was "privileged" to use the medical library and have read the NEJM. It was one of the easiest ones to read, whereas other journals were full of technical terms. As easy to read as any popular magazine in the check-out lane of your favorite grocery store. Unfortunately, as you have pointed out, the information is not useful for people seeking to become healthier. More of the poor advice regarding diet that has plagued our society for generations. I remember as a child in school eating Cheerios for breakfast (I didn't like the chocolate flavored or super-sugary cereals). Surprisingly, it tastes just the same! (I am 78 years old.) I also had Campbell's soup for lunch and would probably still be eating it, but for some stupid reason, they started adding MSG to all of their soups! Ruined the flavor, for one thing. We all need to take charge of our own health, starting with our diets.

My thoughts is simple and realistic.
You'll not be able to get all sugars off the market,
but you can work on getting the worst one off the market, that being; high fructose corn syrup.
Go for the low hanging fruit.
Suggest people avoid drinks with high fructose corn syrup in them to see if make a difference in how they feel.
There is something about the corn syrup that does a number on your system that a person can actually feel.
I had this experience several years ago.
When I would drink coke, I would start feeling poorly. I just didn't feel right. After looking at the ingredients and seeing; high fructose corn syrup, I elected to stop drinking coke and started drinking Arizona green tea because it had cane sugar in it.
That yucky feeling I was having from drinking coke went away.
After some time I went to drinking straight water for about a year or so. Then, during COVID lock down, I decided to start drinking the Arizona green tea again. Not a problem in the beginning, then one day as I was drinking a can, I started having that yucky feeling. The same one I was having when I drank coke.
I initially ignored it and after having that feeling a couple times I looked at the ingredients of Arizona green tea and read; high fructose corn syrup. I was puzzled because I was certain that Arizona green tea did not have high fructose corn syrup in it. Then I remembered that I had a couple of old cans I had set aside to one day make a sterling engine out of. I went and grabbed one of the cans and read the ingredients.
The ingredients on the old can had cane sugar, and not high fructose corn syrup.
Start with the low hanging fruit. Ultimately, changes come gradually and incrementally. Eventually, sugar can be banned from recipes that have no business having sugar in them like; Oh, I don't know, corn beef for example.
In some cases the sugar is added as a preservative, not to necessarily sweeten the product.

Health care is too expensive. The government is realizing that we need more cost effective solutions to deal with government funded health care costs. You can't beat good old fashioned nutrition to help bring those escalating costs down. 💪👊

I think that one of the reasons for the thorough corruption in our country is the weakening of mind caused by poor diet.

Thank you! I have never had a doctor ask me what I eat which is amazing since it is so closely linked to health. I’m glad they are going to require doctors to have more training in this area.😊

💯 correct! Here in Australia, not once have I ever been asked about my diet. My late father Only once he became diabetic 😢.
The GP' seem ore interested in 'fobbing you off' to Specialist ' mates' who charge a fortune grrr. I have done my own research...and most of the 'advice ' my father was given was inadequate. It's a money game...not about health.

It's very simple: remove all sugar, all grains, and all seed oils (the SAD diet contains these) and you'll be great!

I don't think we need to wait. Ultraprocessed food ('Beyond Meat', GMO fruits and vegetables), sprinkled with lab-developed sugar altenatives, is the future they have mapped out for us.
We, as consumers, need to do our part. And I admit I failed just the other day. I picked up a couple dozen 'omega 3' eggs. It wasn't for the omega 3 hype, it was the very low price of $2.99/dozen (Canada). But I failed to read the small print on the inside of the carton. Along with hyping the vanishingly small omega 3 benefits, they boasted about removing tallow and all other meat byproducts from chicken diets and replacing them with polyunsaturated seed oils. Lesson learned -- never, ever give them the benefit of doubt.

People are more aware that what we real need his good doctors doctors need to stand side by side with their patients. Industry regulations is needed specialy in their scandal profits over suffering. If doctors dont stand by the side of what is right patients will run away this is the very true. No high amount of unprocessed grains washed and soaked over night dont cause any issue. We need to do more fasting like ekadashi and we need to learn from years and years of experience of yogis and buddhists living by the rules of nature. ❤❤❤

It's hard to be optimistic given the newest trend advocating reducing or even eliminating meat consumption. Just to spite them, I'm switching to a carnivore diet.
