My doctor is constantly trying to push drugs on me that I don't need..they take my blood pressure in the office and it's always elevated because they walk me through a long hallway to the room and immediately take my blood pressure while talking to me and asking questions. While taking my blood pressure at home it is almost always in the "normal ranges" I refuse to take blood pressure medicine or any medicines I'll trust my own body, and take my health into my own hands. I don't need unnecessary man made medicines lining the pockets of the Dr's and big pharma.

I took it like a good boy but this crap made me lazy and tired. I asked the pharmacist how long I have to take these and he said forever. No way, I stopped taking it,changed my diet and lost weight. I’m 50, my blood pressure was averaging 180s/100s so my doctor put me on a couple of medications to bring it down. I refused to take them and become yet another lifelong customer of big pharma and took charge of my own health. I changed my diet began to exercise and got on a regiment of a spoonful of a paste made from garlic, ginger, lemon, turmeric, and black pepper. Within a month my blood pressure was averaging 110/68 and resting heart rate of 45.
I believe most of my problem was sugar and diet. I cut out all sugar and about 80% of my carbs, started eating whole unprocessed foods.
I have more energy and I’m more fit than I was in my 20s.
The American diet will kill you. Cut your sugar, carbs, processed meats, and seed oils and most people can can regulate their own blood sugar and blood pressure. And a host of other ailments.

Reasons older folks have high blood pressure are the junks left in the blood. One is excessive fibrins, another is high platelets (average is 200,000) and constricted blood vessels (from depodited fats, calcium, etc.)
Proteolytic enzymes such as Nattokinase or Serrapeptase can dissolve these protein junks and excess platelets, bringing down BP by 20-30 m.m.Hg.
      High-dose vitamin F3, say 10,000 i.u. daily can bring down another 10 m.m. Hg

I was a paramedic for many years. We saw countless patients with med lists that covered an entire sheet of 8.5x11 paper. That’s medical malpractice.

Grandmother was 84 years old. This was in the 90s. Never been to a doctor in her life. No health issues. She was still walking around strong doing everything she did in her younger years. Two of her daughters convinced her she needed to have a routine medical check up. Doctor said she had high blood pressure. Put her on medicine. Two weeks later she got dizzy and fell. Broke her hip. A couple weeks in the hospital and she passed away from “natural” causes. Here it is 30 years later and I’ve known two older people placed on blood pressure meds for high blood pressure. They fell and got injured due to low blood pressure. Had to have their meds adjusted. To this day I wonder if my grandmother got dizzy due to the blood pressure meds and would have lived well into her 90s like her mother (who never saw a doctor in her life) if she had never gotten that routine check up…….

An average of 140/70 at age 73 is NOT a concern for me and since the medical profession has been dropping their numbers to start treating earlier and earlier, I became very sure this was about pharmaceutical promotion,NOT healthy advice for me. My experiences with doctors have been less than great & generally I avoid both them & meds, but all my life when I did see them one thing they were always happy with was my BP, which usually ranged between 110/70-120/80. I was told it was low BP but not worrisome & advised not to get up suddenly & be careful bending over. Now I'm in my 60s & I've noticed if I do see a Dr & say to them I have a history of slightly low BP they'll ask for my numbers then kind of laugh & shake their heads. I've been really confused over the total change in attitude toward the same info & it hadn't occurred to me they had changed the goalposts. Just one more reason to see doctors as little as possible.

My brother's insurance required him to be examined by a cardiologist and have a heart stress test when he reached 65. Test was absolutely normal, BP was below average as usual. Cardiologist insisted he "must" start taking BP medicine; when asked WHY, Dr. stated that everybody over 65 should be taking meds to lower their BP!
I also had a stress test "because of your age"; also perfectly normal, cardiologist told my PCP I needed to be seen regularly at the cardiology office going forward due to "risk factors". When I asked what risk factors, the PCP went over the list and none applied to me. My mom visited a nursing home for a week. When I went to visit they asked to take her vitals. I agreed… he wanted
To do it with her standing 😮… I said to let’s get to her room. Then he took it over her shirt, it was 168over 89. I had them retake it on her bare are… number changed ALOT 126 over 78.
Great way to convince someone they have a problem when they don’t.

Interpretation: We found that there was no significant difference
in blood pressure recorded over a sleeve or on a bare
arm. For practical purposes, the decision to measure blood
pressure on a bare arm or over a sleeved arm should be left
to the judgment of the health care professional taking the
      blood pressure.

Bravo for telling the truth! A mere change of diet and I was off the pressure meds in less than a month.
One warning that should be included: According to recommended and globally accepted protocols for taking blood pressure, for ambulatory patients, it should be taken after a 5-minute seated rest. If a health care provider takes your BP immediately upon coming into the examination room or intake area, call them down for it and insist that they adopt proper protocol! Your BP immediately upon being seated will always be higher than it will be a few minutes later.
Countless BP med prescriptions are written because health care practitioners do not follow proper protocol when taking a patient's blood pressure.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I am a registered nurse in the U.S. and yes, you are right, all the doctors here want everybody to get blood pressure medication for anything over 120/80. I have argued with so many medical people about this. We have an epidemic of frail, weak, falling down senior citizens. They want me on it and my BPs at home are fine. Also, nobody follows the guidelines for TAKING a reading in the office. 😡

Re: the guidelines for taking a reading in the office, I wondered about this too. I'm not a practitioner, but I've read instructions on at-home monitors which say to sit quietly for 10 minutes or so before taking a reading, among other things. But every time I've been to a doctor, I am whisked in, with a bunch of various people yakkity-yakking a bunch of small talk at the same time I'm trying to weed out their discussion for instructions on where to turn in the hallway, where to get on a scale, trying to remember all the things I want to ask, etc... I am overwhelmed at that point, and have barely sat down when they whip out the cuff, slap it on, and I end up with a reading of 130 or 140 over 90. I take no BP meds and I'm 64 years old. So, is my blood pressure high? Or is it situational? There was ONE time when I made it into the exam room under much less jangly circumstances. Then the staff was busy and I sat there, alone, quietly, for about 20 minutes. I concentrated on sitting still, being calm. My BP measured 117/78. I think they purposely herd us in there, quickly, with a lot of overwhelm, and slap the cuff on in a hurry just so they DO get higher measurements because then they can throw drugs at it. Maddening.

@@iamdebmillerI'm 63, I've had the same problem. My bp when measured at the DRs over the last few years Is always around 130/80, but at home when I follow the guidelines it's below 120/70.
If I sit quietly and read for a while, then press the button it will be even lower at around 105/65.
My monitor is a good one because I have ADHD and take an amphetamine-based medication daily. It was checked not long ago against an official NHS model when my mum had a home visit and her Dr kindly took my bp using both. It is accurate.
After an unusually high (141/85) new young GP wanted me straight on meds, which I refused. He didn't seem to believe me when I told him the at-home level.
I got him to look at my older records which showed, I've had a low bp my whole life, I had hypotensive syncope starting at age 9 that carried on until I was in my 30s.
He hadn't looked so had no idea. I also pointed out that I was actually consulting him about my mental health. At the time, I was in an extremely stressful situation and very anxious. To add to that, they were running late and it was near closing time, so I was stressed by the wait. To top it off, the nurse had the cuff on my arm the instant I sat down and did not do a second test.
So for now I'm not on meds and before my next visit will take some photos as evidence.

The 4th time, I was in a big hurry, had to go tinkle, had ran from the parking lot to get there on it, and my BP was done over my sweater sleeve in a cold room . The reading was 135/85. The nurse declared I had Hypertension, ordered me to go to the ER to avoid a stroke, and refused to clear my ear. I showed her the 3 previous readings, as well as years-long normal readings recorded on my Red Cross blood donor app. She would not listen. I went on my day, and never went back there.

Thank you Dr Dhand for having the courage to speak out on this topic. I have been a hospital nurse for over 40 years and during that time I’ve seen the growing trend to prescribe blood pressure medications to any older patient who has a slightly higher than “normal” blood pressure. The result - a frightening rise in the amount of older people being admitted to hospital after a fall. Needlessly lowering an older person’s blood pressure often causes them to feel dizzy and fall. Falling as an older person is very dangerous and often results in broken bones. We are doing a great disservice to our older population. You are spot on.

If they're too serious, they prescribe another med to take care of that symptom...and the spiral goes on and on. I drew a line at the 4 that are very important to my health right now. I'm male, 66yo, 5'10" and 230lbs. No health issues except at an annual checkup, my primary care doctor told me that my BP was a bit high when measured in his office and he put me on a weight loss plan and 50mg of Losartan per day. I have one of the automatic BP machines you can buy at the pharmacy and was checking it multiple times a day for awhile. I noticed some things. 1. BP is dynamic which makes sense. If I was outside working and then measure it immediately, it will be well above the 120/80, maybe 150/100 with a pulse in the 90s. This apparently is to be expected when exercising because the heart needs to pump more to meet the oxygen demand. If I sit quietly, relax and breathe deeply for a few minutes, I can get it down to maybe 128/85. I have noticed that being nervous or stressed mentally, results in a higher reading. Also if I've just had lunch and then on a full stomach, take a reading, it tends to be higher. Drinking coffee or coke (with caffeine) gives a higher reading. Losing weight, just a few pounds, also makes a big difference in the readings. So Dr. Dhand's comments align with what I've observed personally. BP is dynamic and interpreting the measured value must take into consideration several factors. Having the patient measure at home and record readings over several days and/or weeks seems like a good idea.

Blood pressure varies throughout the day and according to activities. A power lifter’s BP goes sky high during a lift. When people are nervous BP goes up. When people have to wait 30 minutes in a waiting room and have urine to evacuate it will cause higher blood pressure readings. When people are in pain for example a toothache, blood pressure goes up. Best to get a good cuff BP monitor and check upon waking and perhaps before bed and once another time.

I was caught off guard, have white coat, had coffee that day, and walked fast to not lose work time. My bp was 145/82 and they freaked out. Which caused me to freak out. They wanted to increase my meds. I had a smaller dose at home so I took one for a day to see (which would have been half what they wanted to increase me to) and I got light headed and dizzy. When I used a watch that read BP I was consistently 119/76. As a Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine I ask people just to be more aware of how they “feel”.
I have one client, complains of dizziness and headaches. I said “are you drinking enough water” every day? Did you eat pizza last night?
