  • Dr. Phil talks to mothers-in-law feuding with their sons-in-law and the relatives caught in the crossfire of these ongoing feuds. Greg and Amy have only been married for 10 months, but the couple says Amy’s mom, Terry, is ruining their relationship. Greg says his mother-in-law is manipulative and controlling, and she even called Child Protective Services on him for allegedly abusing Amy’s young children. Terry says Greg curses all the time, can’t keep a job and made her 5-year-old grandson wear a diaper to school as punishment for sucking his thumb -- a claim Greg denies. Is Terry a meddling mother-in-law or just a concerned grandmother? Then, Donna, says her son-in-law, Steve, is an abusive parent who hits her grandchildren. Steve refutes this and says his mother-in-law is a “man-hater” trying to ruin his marriage. Donna’s daughters, Rochelle and Shannon, speak up about the family drama, and you’ll be surprised to learn who they think is to blame. Whose side are you on? Tune in and decide! (2209097)

I was babysitting at 13….3 kids. At 16 I was driving my brothers to all their activities along with working and going to school. I was certainly capable of staying alone for a night.

You can't allow someone to be so deeply involved for so long and suddenly expect them to know a different place. As far as they know, their place is where they've been allowed to be.

My parents used to go out for hours at a time and leave me on my own at the age of 7. I was left to walk a mile each way on my own to school when I was 5 over main roads. When I was 21 they still made me go and stay with my grandmother when they went on holiday as they did not trust me to be alone in the house. Thank goodness I got married a year later and moved miles away.

My parents left me home alone and went on weekend trips when I was 16. They didn't "leave me out" of anything. 99.8% of 16 year old's want to be left alone. They don't want a babysitter, nor do they need one. This grandma is overstepping her role.

When I was a kid in the 80’s you could be home alone at 11. I think even that just had to be the oldest kid alone, because we were home alone when the oldest of us was 11. I mean, that was a different time, and maybe you wouldn’t do that today, but if you can’t trust a 16 year old to be home alone then there is something wrong with that 16 year old.

If the marriage falls apart the daughter will come back to her mom. She used her mom when the children’s fathers didn’t want to take responsibility. The daughter helped cause this issue because as she said her mom was the “husband” for a long time. Grandma should just wash her hands of the situation and live her life. Don’t get suckered in if the daughter has issues since she wants the grandmother on the outside. It’s possible the daughter wised up with her relationship or is following the same pattern but with someone who is just a smudge better.

I understand abandonment by your children and this grandmother is having those feelings. She helped raise those children like a parent. This daughter needs to understand the suffering the separation is causing her mother. Yes, they are not her children, but her daughter relied on her for years and now she wants her to butt out? Hope they can all find a compromise. Also, I hope that grandmother makes new friends and goes on cruises and finds people who love and appreciate her.

None of your business lady. I had my granddaughter when she was 3 weeks old and my daughter in law completely ignored her and never came to see her. My son came everyday on his lunch break and after work to be with his daughter. Scroll 18 years in the future and at her graduation her Mom was her hero and taught her everything she knows. I had her reading writing and doing math at 4 years old she graduated as Salutatorian and she gave all the credit to her mom. Now she’s in college and won’t even take the time to come see us. Get over it yes it hurts but move on and enjoy that you still get to see your grandkids
