in a way i think the west struggles with kawaii due to the punk and goth and emo and scene movements of the last 4 decades or so. the west can do dark and edgy very well, and the pastels and cuteness has been left over for the kids, who don’t need much really. there’s definitely more to it than this but i personally think this contributes to it a lot.
Imo its less that its "easier" for the west to do edgy stuff (although I agree with your point about it being seen as "for kids") its more that thats not whats popular right now. Celebrities play a BIG part in fashion trends here and you dont see a lot of kawaii clothing on celebs. The reason I think emo and scene got as big as they did is because of artists like Avril Lavigne and My Chemical Romance having as much main stream attention as they got.
100 percent! we're definitely getting better here (started getting into j-fashion in 2011 and there was absolutely n o t h i n g apart from possibly claires which is mostly aimed at kiddos) but we have a long way to go imo
at least we're getting a resurgence of brighter western aesthetics with Coquette and Dollette with some 90s combacks, though I guess Jfashion is inspiring a lot of people to get into feminine styles
I feel like cuteness in US is more bright colors and sharper lines, in German and Italian there is stuff that has similar Kawaii aesthetic but it's more expensive artisan goods. Cheap euro store items are worse than things that are cute in the US. But also a lot of what Kawaii comes from is more vintage Western goods-- so 70s and 80s pastel themes just with modern Japanese graphic design.
I second what another person said- Its E-girl and E-boy fashion in the US that the closest counterpart to this. Usually it is sharper lines, but not necessarily bright colour. In the US, it's more about colour contrast. The colours stand out from one another instead of blending nicely like pastels.
I didn't even know that the aesthetic I've been trying to work towards in my art has been yumekawa this entire time until I stumbled upon this video that taught me what yume kawa is omg. 😭♥♥♥ Thank you!
when you talked about characters, i was waiting for pareo to appear, i guess she have this type of style, aspecially her happiness shot outfit, with this unicorns decorated dress and her pastel hair. Its just so nice to have one my special interest is being in another one
Oh my gosh she is definitely yumekawa for sure! Her outfit is so cute!! Honestly I wonder if it could be considered fairy kei too with the silhouette of the tulle skirt! 💖
I love seeing and hearing about different styles and subcultures. I love dressing in a mixture of them too, I refer friends to some when they ask for help with their style.
this is so perfect timing for me because i've been very interested in yumekawaii for sometime now and have been collecting ang making pastel clothing. i love that yumekawaii is more of a feeling rather than specifics and would def be leaning towards this subculture more
I love this series so much and I love that you're exploring more specific terms like yumekawa. You choose the BEST guests!! I wonder if the creator of fairy-tips would be interested in participating 💖
This is the first video by you that I’m watching!! I love this style of dressing, though I was wondering if you could make a video disproving misconceptions that plus size people can’t wear j-fashion? I’m plus size and it makes me so upset when I find something adorable that doesn’t fit
Welcome! Also that is a very important topic and issue, I think it'd be a great idea to interview two plus size j-fashion enthusiasts on their experiences and advice for others one day
I guess yume kawaii is really like a dreamy pastel galaxy cottoncandy vibe, and since its so broad in terms of what can be yume kawa (from fashion to music and food) it really is about the vibe and feeling
I literally watched this video about 5 times! It's just so good. I wear fairy kei and I adore yumekawaii. But about the character segment tho I wanted to mention two more Pareo from Bandori and Hotaru Yura from Magia Record. I haven't played either game but both girls defiantly give off yumekawa vibes. This series is so good keep up the good work😊💖.
Yessss I only recently learned of this aesthetic and your video came with perfect timing because I probably came across something else about it a month and a half ago so it was barely on my radar when this video came out, but I'm very excited to start incorporating this into my life more and learning more about it 🌙✨️☁️
I only recently accepted that yume kawaii is totally my desired aesthetic, because my style journey has been a long, difficult one. 😅 My wardrobe has a bunch of stuff I have no desire to wear anymore because it was never what I was actually interested in, I just didn't have the nerve to dress how I wanted to. Now I've fully embraced that I want to be a cutesy pastel Lolita girl. Wardrobe's still a work in progress since that stuff's expensive and I have negative money right now. But even after I decided that, I doubted that Yume Kawaii was my thing because of the associations. It seemed heavy on themes of sleep and dreaming and I convinced myself that despite being an avid daydreamer and suseptible to naps and getting tired easily, that didn't apply to me. 😂
I loved this video! I learned a lot :) If you ever are looking for another style to do a video on, I’m interested in morute, though I’m not really sure what it is
always so thankful for the diversity in your guests! it means so much to me as a queer and trans person! yume kawaii is definitely my style, and makes me so excited! 💞🦄⭐☁
After watching this video, it seems like I'm yume-kawaii. Not just as a fashion, but as they said - a way of life. It's nice to have a name for it, after all these years. ^^
I think life would be easier if we weren't pressured to find definitive terms for everything 😌 When I get dressed, I just go by a vibe ✨ Like, there was one time, I wore all the orange clothes and accessories in my wardrobe. When people asked about my outfit, I'll just said: "I felt like wearing orange."
Cuteness in US is sooooo not cute to me…. Like when people try to do cuteness it’s messy and not cohesive sometimes… like when US artists try to make cute charms or resin items, they’re messy and just have generic cute things thrown on them… not even stuff that has to do with the design, just “cute” stuff on there because they’re small and “cute”
I feel bad for Gess they keep getting cut off and talked over and you can see they keep trying to speak but are being cut off/afraid to interrupt 🥺🥺 my anxious heart is sad
i love yume kawaii (& fairy kei fashion omg :33)!! its the sweetest and i love love love feeling cute and hopeful and sweet, i want to be cute in every way T^T it makes me so happy!! i just want to be the cutest person alive >.< eat those cute foods, collect cute items and have a cute room and have cute mannerisms and everything... like a real life magical girl :D i'm glad yume kawaii is becoming more popular, bc it is my faaaaaavoriteeee!! little twin stars are cute, but i love pompompurin the most hehe :33 THE STICKERS BTW WERE SOOOOOO CUTE!!! "its EXTREMELY yumekawa!!" is what i want people to think when they see me T^T i know its silly but i wish i could go to japan so i could get & see cute stuff easier!! most 'kawaii' stuff in US it feels almost too polished,,, or restrictive /(>_
CY8ER is now Neo Tokyo, Neo Nakano and ODOKe KAIWAI ❗ ;u; They just separated to create new groups with new music and revive BPM15Q ;w; Also, there was groups before CY8ER ❕❕ Like *DOPING BERRY* and *Strawberry Syndrome* (ストロベリー症候群) ✨ being full 100% *Yume-Kawa* 🌸 but sadly they didn't last long ;u;
For me the best way to describe yume kawa is babyish. For me, it's how pastel it is. It's more pastel than other kawaii fashions yume kawa uses more specific pastel shades. For me, the feeling I get from it is very like, childlike and safety like you said it's very much little star twins. My personal kawaii style is very my melody and kuromi
I would say Yume Kawaii is a subculture of fairy kei. The difference is that fairy Kei is based off 80s and 90s cartoons and yume is more fairy tale based...I would appreciate if u could include more POC voices in ur next series....I'd love to ne included..im knowledgeable on lots of Jfashion styles
I love these videos they make my heart sparkle! ✨✨ I would love there to be a video about Mahou-kei! For people who are totally obsessed with magical girls! You could totally go interview @dreamiedolly 🌸💕💖 she is amazing!!! ⭐️⭐️🌈

Its quite sucky for me as i am a part of the punk subculture but i absolutely love yume kawaii fashion T_T

U.S it’s called Egirl, it’s not very defined either

What German examples do you have? I'd love to discover cute things here
I love this style, I need it to be more popular I really love the whole pastel aesthetic and cute clothes 💖🐑
I didn't even know that the aesthetic I've been trying to work towards in my art has been yumekawa this entire time until I stumbled upon this video that taught me what yume kawa is omg. 😭♥♥♥ Thank you!

What a weird coincidence! I want to implement the yumekawa aesthetic into my style, and then this is recommended to me😭
Thank you for teaching me what YumeKawaii issss ahhh, this has to be my favorite aesthetic
I love seeing and hearing about different styles and subcultures. I love dressing in a mixture of them too, I refer friends to some when they ask for help with their style.

I just clicked on your video and for some reason i just feel instantly better, maybe its the bright colours and the cut accesories

I'm glad you made this video!!! Hopefully we get to see Yami Kawaii as a topic of discussion soon
ah ive missed this series, been so busy with life. cant wait to binge haahahsb cant wait for more from you 🥹💕

I was lured in by the Yui Yumeka and stayed for the analysis.

Love your hair!!!
Good video. Continue on your road on getting the silver play button
I have to say, Bluey is leaning into the pastels pretty hard. I think the tides may be changing these days in the West.
Ive been into the yume kawaii lifestyle since 2018
I think Japan’s merchandise being cuter than the US stuff is because people might cringe at others for owning those things here in the US….
@AyuJochuuthanks for the reply, i am sorry for the late reply!!! I’m gonna check out that article you mentioned. Thanks again!!!!
Lolita girl here 🧁🍭🍬 love your pod casts
LOVE these vids, so educational. Can you please talk about yami kawaii?
I always thought yumekawa was like, sleepy cute? Like pajamas, pillows and sleepy themes,, is there a 'sleepy cute' jfashion sub style? ❤
KIRARA AND YUI YASSSS
Can you check out the Kogal fashion?
I have done some gyaru interviews in the past and I have more planned in the future! Perhaps we could talk about kogal then ❤️

Some people do but some people don't, it's all personal preference ❤
yayyyy
Unicorns=weakness??? Ask that to the Brony fandom XD
And i agree to some of the opinions, "fear of femininity" its real.
Yayy itz mai fav aesthetic!!!
Hi I used to follow u on tt but I don’t have it anymore lol but could u do decora or kidcore finds on Amazon?

Can i get hi💙❤🧡💛💚💜🌈
I know this isn't a fairy kei video, but I do just want to say you really dont have to wear accessories for fairy!
I would say Yume Kawaii is a subculture of fairy kei. The difference is that fairy Kei is based off 80s and 90s cartoons and yume is more fairy tale based...I would appreciate if u could include more POC voices in ur next series....I'd love to ne included..im knowledgeable on lots of Jfashion styles
sick
I love these videos they make my heart sparkle! ✨✨ I would love there to be a video about Mahou-kei! For people who are totally obsessed with magical girls! You could totally go interview @dreamiedolly 🌸💕💖 she is amazing!!! ⭐️⭐️🌈
