I loved everything you had to say. I was so happy that I'm not alone in what I thought was my dirty little secret concerning books & that is I'm not a romance book reader. People think there's something wrong with me. I've never been able to explain exactly why but you did a very job with it & I thank you. I'm relatively diversified but you can leave the romance out!

I saw a movie (subtitled) of A Man Called Ove. It started out portraying him as a grumpy old man but later on he is transformed by those around him. Very good story!

Wonderful video! My favorite book in high school was Jane Eyre and it hooked me on English literature. I also like historical period novels and forensic thrillers. One of my reads was "Mary Called Magdalene" by Margaret George. The series books as an adult that I enjoyed the most is the "Scarpetta" series by Patricia Cornwell. Thanks for sharing both your knitting and ancillary videos,

Audible 👍 - I am also a long time member (2001). A historical novel? Memoirs of a Geisha. When I recommended it to a friend, I was shocked to find out it is a novel written by a guy? I still can’t believe that...

I just can't even......... I absolutely LOVED this video. I'm an avid reader and love to hear about what other people are reading. I will definitely check out some of the books that you mentioned. I'm kind of a johnny one note. My very favorite books are spy, detective and mystery books. I read every Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys novels when growing up. My very favorite reread is The Unlikely Spy by Daniel Silva. It takes place in WWII London and is about, what is now MI6, and how they dealt with the months leading up to the D-Day invasion. An excellent read. Please do more of these!!

As a new knitter (long-time crocheter), I find your videos fascinating and fun. Thanks for taking the time to create them. One of my favorite book series is "Maisie Dobbs" by Jacqueline Winspear. First set in WWI England, they move forward with a realistic narrative of time and place. I, too, listen to audiobooks, but I download them from my library.

I’m with you, I prefer wholesome over tawdry! I enjoyed Debbie Macomber’s Blossom Street series, Rose Harbor Series, and Cedor Cove series. I have read all of Nicholas Sparks’ books. I also like the Prairie Trilogy by Willa Cather and The Kopp Sisters series by Amy Stewart. I read a lot of non-fiction such as autobiographies, Christian growth, how-to’s, and even enjoy reading things like the history of coffee and tea. I’m not a fan of Sci-Fi. I tried audio books, but unfortunately my mind wanders too much and after a while I will have no idea of what happened in the previous chapter! So, I have to set my eyes to page in order to absorb it, I guess.

Love, love, love your hair! It is so casual and youthful! Yes do the review, you and I have similar taste in historical fiction and I’m always looking for new reads. Thank you for your honesty, it’s so refreshing. Yes on Dracula. I’m afraid I’m a bit darker in my taste, I was transfixed by The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr. It’s graphic and gruesome but the writing is perfection. I also was equally as engrossed with Devil in the White City. The skill of the author (whom I cannot recall right at this moment), telling 2 stories that coincided in history and blending them in your minds eye as you read was genius. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, though older is calling me to reread it as well. Also yes on the reviews for your favorites in each category. I would love to expand my horizons on what I consider reading. Thank you Dr. Kelly I love every episode.

I remember those reading machines in school, I loved them too! I don't know how old I was when I first came to love reading, but it must have been young like you. My mom would take me to the library and back then you could check out 10 books at a time. So I would load up on Nancy Drew, Beverly Cleary novels and whatever caught my fancy and the librarians were always surprised when my Mom would tell them I would have them all read and back within the 2 week check out, LOL. Then as a young adult I worked in a book store and read all kinds of genre including Romance which is pretty predictable and rather boring so I avoid it at all costs now. I listen to Audible books and have for the last 15 years. My favorite genre is Science Fantasy and Science Fiction, but I also like Historical Fiction, Self Help, Motivational, Suspense and the occasional Horror novel by Stephen King, Dean Koontz. And anything written by Stephen King is horrible as a movie, it does not play well. I have always preferred to read my books rather than watch television, even after we got the color tv when I was 10. Ha!

Thank you for your reviews! I’m going to have to read The Sweet Potato Queen because I totally agreed with your other choices for favorites. I can understand why you gave up on Ove. I teach psych of aging and was afraid it was just another stereotypic grumpy old man, but it was our book club selection so I powered through. It does get much better.
A series I like is by Laurie R. King and begins with The Beekeeper’s Apprentice.

I heard you. You did not like the Harry Potter book series. But hear me out. If you should be knitting or sewing and you want to listen to a recording of a book but you don't want it to be a new book because you need to pay attention to your project you might want to give the Harry Potter audio books a try. They were read by a British actor named Jim Dale who you may remember as Dr. Terminus in the first Pete's Dragon movie. He has been nominated for 5 Tony Awards winning one for the musical Barnum. He was the unseen narrator on the ABC show Pushing Daisies. He received 7 nominations for Grammys for his recordings of the Harry Potter series and won 2. He has won 10 Audie Awards for his recordings of Harry Potter and other children's books. He really does an amazing job of giving each character a different voice.

Thank you for all of these book suggestions. I’ve enjoyed reading many of the books you have reviewed. I would love to hear your research on Dracula in October. I really enjoyed the Oxford Medieval Mysteries, because it is read by one of my favorite narrators. My daughter also enjoyed reading Rhys Bowen's The Royal Spyness Mysteries. I began to love reading because of my sister. She would ignored wile reading and since she wouldn't talk or play with me I decided that I should start reading too. My favourite genre is romance lol. I agree though with why you don't read the genre. Its really hard to find genuine love stories and not just lust stories. Te book that recently made me cry was "Where the heart is" by Billie Letts. I cried so hard and wish I could unread some parts but it was I good book. The book I've reread most would have to be "Kimi wa petto" by Yayoi Ogawa.
I would be interested in more book reviews. I really enjoy your videos and hope you will continue as long as you can.

Superb video! My long-time favorite book, Captains and The Kings by Taylor Caldwell, is available for Kindle/$1.99. I read it over again about once every year or two...it always pulls me in. There's also an oldie by Frank Yerby entitled, The Goat Song...set in ancient Greece, that's quite the literary experience! I realize both of these fictional works are a bit unusual, but they are captivating, educational, historical page-turners! Goat Song may even be long out-of-print...I found a copy on-line and quickly added it to my library.

I watch all your podcasts, as I find them all interesting. My dad taught me to read (he was a reporter/newspaper editor) when I was three and I always feel that he gave me the greatest gift that keeps on giving. I read romances when I was 13...and have moved on. I listen to books on CD, especially whilst knitting or quilting, but I love holding an actual book, smelling the pages, enjoying the time immersed in someone else's world. Nancy Pearl, who wrote the 'Book Lust' series, said to read 50 pages or subtract your age from 100 if you are over 50, and try to read that many pages of a book to determine if you like it....I find the older I get, the fewer pages I have to worry about. I used to think I had to read every book faithfully until I realized how short life is and how many books are out there that I really want to read. I've never been able to get into the 'Game of Thrones' books or the TV series. I am listening to 'The Invention of Wings', by Sue Monk Kidd...about Sarah Grimke, the Abolitionist. Thanks for another great episode. Enjoy your week.

I really do like the soft wavy new hairstyle. I have to say that since I’ve really gotten into knitting my reading has been mostly audiobooks and therefore I’m probably reading less than half of what I used to. The year I turned 50 my reading goal was 50 books and I’m pretty proud to say I did it! I really like a variety of book genres as well however I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older I tend to read less of the murder mysteries/ thrillers/ true crime than I used to and more historical fiction / fantasy/ biographies. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Dooer was very good ( I’m a sucker for WW2 historical fiction) . I loved both the books and the movies of The Girl on the Train , Unbroken and GoneGirl. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was a really neat book that has a movie that is coming soon. I’ll read pretty much anything Stephen King writes because he has such a way with dialogue and creating real flawed characters. I love the Outlander books! Such a bummer they weren’t your cup a tea!

I love your book reviews and have read many of the titles you have reviewed. I live about 30 minutes from town and for as long as I can remember we have listened to audio books. I have a love for the Harry Potter series, he has been my comfort food of books. He has seen me through many hard times and given me a space to escape. The only book I ever started reading and put down within the first chapter was 50 Shades of Gray. Every year in November I reread Laura Ingalls Wilder's book The Long Hard Winter, it reminds me to be thankful for all that I have. My favorite series is Sue Grafton's alphabet series about Kinsey Millhone. Judy Kaye narrates the series and is fantastic. I tend to find a topic that inspires me to read everything I can find about it. I read A Walk in the Woods and then devoured everything I could find about the Appalachian Trail. The Panama Canal was a big topic for me last year and I read David McCullough's A Path Between the Seas. It inspired my husband and I to cruise through the Panama Canal. The book that made me cry was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. My favorite genre is historical fiction. I am also a huge fan of kids literature. I have read so many books to my children and listened to even more. It is a genre that I will always love because of the memories connected to reading/listening. My least favorite book to tv adaption was Netflix' attempt to bring Anne of Green Gables to television. My favorite book/movie adaptation was Little Women with Susan Sarandon and Winona Ryder. Books are wonderful. I loved listening to you and please continue sharing what you are reading. Thanks! HOlly

I just finished 2 historical novels by Mary Doria Russell. The first is “ Doc “. The 2nd is “ Epitaph”. They go together & I absolutely loved them both. She did a lot of research & I am so glad to feel like I now have a better understanding of Doc & the Earp bros. & how their lives actually probably were vs all the different movies that have been made about them. “ Epitaph” has the whole Ok Corral incident & then goes on to tell about the years after for the Earps & Doc. My favorite genre for books and movies is also historical fiction. I found listening to The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure to be especially memorable. I've also read a lot of Britian historical fiction as I find British history to be enthralling. Thanks for the tips on books, I am interested in reading We The Living as I find Russia's history to be very interesting as well. Nice video! and Love the hair!! Yes!!

I love your hair Kristine! It looks very natural and pretty. I enjoyed this podcast extremely!! I always enjoy your podcasts and find them very interesting. I loved reading when I was younger but since I had children I never seemed to have time and now that I am almost an empty nester....almost....I would love to get into reading but don’t want it to take time from my knitting so I LOVE audible. But I am like you and don’t like a lot of the books that are out there with tons of swearing and sex and just bad storylines. I have started listening to The Thirteenth Tale based on your recommendation and so far I cannot stop listening so THANK YOU! But I would love very much to hear what historical fictions you enjoyed. I am going to listen to Before we were yours after I finish this one. I did not like Ova either....I read it right to the end and found it very depressing. But I know a lot of people loved it. Thank you so much for your podcasts and I would love to see more book ones in addition to your yarn ones!!

Ready Player One is a good for all the reasons you gave, including the reading performed by Wil Wheaton. Hesitated to see the film because it would be difficult to capture the various levels. Was careful to read reviews and noted that they were unable to use many of the book references due to licensing concerns. A friend - who had not read the book - wanted to see the film. So I went knowing it would not match the book; therefore instead of disliking the film I could give it an OK.
In contrast, the film The Martian did a reasonable adaptation of the novel and the changes made it more accessible for those not into science.
P.S. The book The Night Circus is underrated and sadly not well known.

Hi Kristine. My all-time favorite book is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I have read it twice and loved it both times. It is in Historic England at the time when the cathedrals were being built. There are sequels, but didn't love them as much as the first title. Have you read it? What did you think of it?

I received an email a couple days ago from Quince and Co. about a yarn kit dyed to match the cover of this book: www.amazon.com/Immortalists-Chloe-Benjamin/dp/0735213186/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526255636&sr=8-1&keywords=the+immortalists and saw that several knitters recommended it, so I ordered it. Going to begin reading tonight. Have you read it Kristine?

Definitely interested in hearing about that audio book and Dracula. I may have to put it on my Kindle.
Wow, I'm so surprised that you didn't like the Outlander series. It's a good thing we're all different isn't it? I also loved the Harry Potter books. I love that you're doing these episodes, I'd love to see this be a regular thing since I love to read.
I didn't go to see the movie A Wrinkle in Time because I was so upset at the way they changed it so it would be PC. I loved the books and was excited to hear that Disney was making a movie, but as soon as I saw the trailer I was turned off. I will watch it for free eventually, but I wasn't about to pay to see it.
I have loved to read my whole life. I spent a lot of time doing it while I was growing up, and I do as much reading as I can now. Right now real life is the pits, so I'm doing a whole bunch of light reading. I read all of the Maggie Sefton knitting mysteries, and now I'm reading Sally Goldenbaum's Seaside Knitting Mysteries. I loved Maggie Sefton's books right away, but I had more trouble getting into Sally Goldenbaum's books. By book 3 I was hooked though.
Have you ever read the knitting series by Terri DuLong? That was a series I really enjoyed too. She also wrote Lost Souls of the Witches Castle and Daughters of the Mill (Lost Souls Book 2) that I think you would enjoy. The knitting books I read were the Cedar Key series. She has another knitting series that I haven't read yet.
A long time ago I read a historical fiction book based on the story of Marie Antoinette by Victoria Holt and Philippa Carr called The Queen's Confession. I loved her/their (I think those are 2 pen names for the same author) perspective of that era and her life. I think you can get it on Amazon if you're interested.

    Hi Dr. Kelly,
I enjoyed this new format and am looking forward to future ones. I would really like to hear your review on Dracula based on your research. It was the book that got me hooked on reading when I was young. When I was in college, I read Atlas Shrugged with a group of other students during a Summer internship. Yet again, I got hooked and read We the Living, The Fountainhead and several other Ayn Rand works. My favorite book is Atlas Shrugged, and I suspect that reading it with a group made a difference. Ironically, part III of the film adaptation of Atlas Shrugged was my least favorite book to film movie and part I was my favorite. Thank you for making the time to do these videos.

I'm an avid reader myself. I prefer hardcopies, but I listen to audiobooks every now and then. I also have a few hardcover jewels, that I treasure.
My favorite topic is fantasy in general and anything about dragons is great! I read and collected all the novels about Discworld by Terry Pratchett.
I obliterated the paperback 'Good Omens' by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman by reading it so many times, it fell apart; I have to keep it in a bag.
I like to mix it up with Caroline Myss, to Henry David Thoreau, to Eckhart Tolle, to Prentice Mulford, to Carlos Castaneda, to Bradley Trevor Greive, to Manly P. Hall, to name a a few.
Right now I'm reading Chris d'Lacey's 'The Last Dragon Chronicles' series: The Fire Ascending ... 🐲

I’m not an avid reader at all, but when I do read for pleasure it’s usually medical mysteries or some kind of who-done-it. Gorky Park had the biggest influence on me cuz I never thought I’d get through so many pages (this was in my 20’s). I realized then that I do enjoy reading for pleasure. The Harry Potter books are my all-time favorite. Because of the level on which they are written, they were a fast read and made me feel like a kid again (Book 1 and 7 are my favorite).

Oh darn I have the book A Man Called Ove on my bookshelf. Hmm! I really enjoy the Number 1 Ladies Detective series. I was introduced to the books after watching the series on Sundance television channel. I never go to a movie theatre and romance novels are never on my purchase list. Tony Hillerman was always been a favorite of mine as well as Rosemunde Pilcher and Elizabeth Peters. Current books are cozy mysteries which are light and quick reads no brainers.

I read chic lits, when I'm poorly as they are really easy to read with no thought needed. Not sure I could read Dracula as I'm a scardy cat, but I might try after your recommendation. Give the teacher an A+ for the new hair style. Yes, the change is a great idea for the summer.
A movie that is totally better than the book is “African Queen.” Do NOT read the book. You won’t like either main character and it does not have the same great ending that the movie had. Liked the movie ending much better.
I loved Jane Austen’s “Emma” the book and the series staring Johnny Lee Mills (or Miller. Can never remember his last name.) That version was very close to the book. No complaints.

Hi Kristine - I, too, am an Audible fan and always have at least 3 audio books stored in an iPod I keep in the car. And, I have at least 3-4 books on my Kindle which I read in bed before I go to bed. I do love historical fiction as well and I really like some detective series such as the series written by Louise Perry featuring Inspector Gamache. Every story takes place in the Quebec area and each case is fascinating and not gory. And, there is always an underlying personal story about recurring characters. Check out books by William Boyd - not historical fiction, but he is a great story teller. Thanks for doing this - I really enjoyed this video.
