  • Happy New Year! I hope you're having a fabulous 2022. In today's video I talk about some innovative, quirky, and not so well-known applications of sheep's wool. Some of these industrial uses of wool might surprise you but also warm your heart. Wool's versatility and eco-friendly characteristics make it perfect for saving the Earth and its people.

    I put my wool, and hair bits (from brushes, etc) in to my worm bin. It disappears after a bit. i haven't done scientific studies, but I'm impressed that you can't find all my holey socks ;-)

    This is brilliant! I have a shepherdess in Switzerland who said there are no wool mills there as the wool was historically used for uniforms for the army, and so now the wool is used to insulate homes. I really liked the wool mats for weed control. Overall, I found this fascinating and wonder how long it will take to implement! You look wonderful. I am happy to see you back! Good luck in the semester!

      I am also trying to reduce my use of acrylic, but it is cheap and many people are intolerant of all animal fibers. At least think they are: how do you tell if it is the chemicals in dyes that caused a reaction, and after that it is psychosomatic rash.

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому

      Yes -- pros and cons to both natural and synthetic fibers...

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому

      Yes, if people are truly allergic to wool or dyes, then they will have a "real" allergic reaction with histamine release. I did a video about this a while back, and the research indicates that true wool allergy is extremely rare. Lanolin allergy is a little more common but still pretty rare. Plus wool and human hair are basically the same chemical composition, so someone allergic to wool would be allergic to their own hair.

    That is fascinating! I didn't know many of those things. Did you know wool actually PRODUCES heat? No other fibre does that! Which explains why wool is warm even when damp. What a wonderful fibre!!

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому

      I did know that! And it's probably at least partly why wool makes such a great insulator. 😃

    Love this! I'll definitely be buying wool-based ground cover for my garden! One problem I can see specifically with building insulation, though, is that there are insects that eat wool that would see that as a tasty snack. Wouldn't want to see all my insulation disappear! My guess re: formaldehyde is that it actually reacts with the lysine residues in wool proteins so it becomes chemically bonded to the wool in way that prevents later release, unlike synthetic fibers. Great way to cut down on indoor air pollution!

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, like everything in life there are pros and cons to using wool. I do wonder if they put insecticide in wool insulation...

    I wonder how the air quality is in our craft rooms with all the stash. Does wearing wool outside improve the air quality around us? I think I will put my yarn scraps in the compost but have to consider since the dyes used may negate my attempt to grow an organic garden.

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому

      I like your thinking! Someone needs to do a study of craft room air quality, haha! Yes, I'm intrigued about the issue with dyes and will have to look into that.

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому

      Yes, that's an interesting question about the dyes. All the applications I was talking about used undyed wool. I'll have to look into the dye issue and maybe will do another video about that. 😊

    I have a lot of wool in my house because I have been knitting for a very long time and we live in Wisconsin and wear woven wool garments too. Is there a way to use old worn blankets and garments in our home gardens and yards? Can you use wool fabric in some way or do you have to use a mulch generated by undyed industrial wool waste?

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  2 роки тому

      Hi Sandy -- great questions. I believe all the studies I talked about used some kind of prepared wool in the different applications. You could try wool fabric. I don't see how it would hurt anything.

  • @paulagrnsy
