    Thank you Dr. Kelly for another informative fun video. My condolences on the loss of your father and your dog, my prayers go out to you and your family. I lost my dad at the beginning of the year, so I can relate, it’s never easy. I always learn interesting facts from your videos, the merino characteristic chart was so informative, thank you for taking the time to research and compile the information.👏🏽👏🏽❤️ Also, seeing your approach to online teaching, made me wish I was in your class.😁😁. Those backgrounds and information are exciting to learn about. So glad you plan to continue podcasting, I always look forward to it. Have a wonderful weekend 😊

    I have fibromyalgia and neuropathy. I have formed the habit of wearing wool socks (hand-knitted of course) to bed every night. I have noticed that the coarser wool does prickle but that calms down in a little while. My feet definitely feel better with this habit and it lets me sleep as well. Some nights are two-sock nights (one over the other) which seems to amplify the effect. I am glad to know that there is scientific basis for wearing the wool. Maybe now I'll get up the nerve to tell my doctor.

    Very good video! Unfortunatelly , I always have pilling issues with merino, very frustrating.I have also read that the merino sheep spoils the soil because they take the roots off from the plants they eat.

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! I know, merino is so prone to pilling. Interesting about the merino's grazing -- I can't find any studies on that. Sheep don't have any upper front teeth, so it seems like it would be hard for them to pull plants out at the roots. Let me know where you saw that info and I will check it out. 💖

    Hello Kristine hi from South Africa. I was so mesmerised by your talk and learned so much about Merino yarn. I have forwarded your podcast to all my yarnie friends - wow you have opened up such an interest for me now in all the various wools around the world. I am proud to say that South Africa apparently the biggest exporter of Mohair wool internationally and also a lot of Merino and now I know how is all started - thanks to you. I am new to the yarn world since I have gone into semi retirement ..... wow it is so much more interesting that I ever thought. Please do not stop educating us out there on these subjects - you are a blessing ..... regards from a freezing South Africa!!!

    Kristine, really interesting. I have eczema in one of my ears, and it's spread to just above the ear under my hair. I thought, of course, what a great excuse to make a fine merino knit cap for the winter if it's also going to help eczema. The other thing I thought was interesting is that there is a moment in one in the Outlander books where the main character Claire is thinking about the flock of merino sheep that her sister-in-law Jenny has in the 1760s. But, unless Jenny's husband Ian and the famous Jamie Fraser (Claire's husband) stole some Merino sheep and managed to smuggle them back to Scotland in the 1730s when they were young men fighting in Europe, Jenny couldn't have had that flock. She must have been raising a different breed for knitting and weaving yarn. Either that or Diana Gabaldon needs to write a novella about Ian and Jamie managing to get a breeding pair of Merinos back to Scotland. Anyhow, love these details!!!

    Love your videos I learn so much. I'm one who says I'm sensitive to some wool as my skin is sensitive that if my own hair gets between me and my clothing, it drives me crazy. The scratchy short hairs produces bumps on my skin so I was amazed the study saying it helped eczema. My allergy tests show I am allergic to goats and when mohair sweaters were all the rage growing up I couldn't walk into or be next to it without sneezing and having ichy watery eyes. Seems like mohair is again being incorporated into sweaters today. I may have to find some superfine wool clothing to try. Thanks again for such an informative video.

    Dr. Kelly - Thanks for the informative video with all the extensive research! I always enjoy listening/watching your videos. As a dermatologist, I find this particularly interesting and informative and will definitely make wool-based clothing/compression stockings my main go-to recommendation. Apparently wool compression stockings are difficult to produce so most of what I've seen out there are still a blend (smartwool compression stockings, Sockwell compression stockings). Do you know of any other ones?
    Thinking of you and your family in these difficult times.

    • @EweUniversity

      Thank you -- so nice to hear from you. I found some merino blend compression stockings on Amazon and got a few pairs; really like them. Here is the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VQKK51B They come in a wide variety of sizes, which I think is great. I know they are a little pricey, but I guess it is reasonable considering how much some compression stockings cost. I've seen them for over $50 a pair. I did look for the stockings they used in that study I talked about, but I think they were an Australian brand. I remember that they zipped up the back, and I have not been able to find anything like that here in the US. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment.

    Great informative video Dr. Kelly, thanks! I would love to learn more about wool and dust mites. I've tried to research it but never have been able to find much info. As someone who is allergic to dust mites I wash bedding and clothing more than most people, but hesitate to over-wash hand knits, and cannot expose them to heat from the dryer or chemicals that would affect the allergens from the mites. I've heard that wool is dust mite resistant, but have never been able to find much proof either way. I would love to learn more if the topic ever takes your fancy!

The only merino wool that does not itch me is Malabrigo Merino Worsted Wool Yarn. Their sock yarn itches me with nylon and their superwash itches me as well. That's hilarious about those male rats and their wool or polyester pants, lolol. Reminded me of another experiment that had male frogs wearing little silk pants 😂 (way back when people were still trying to figure out how fertilization worked). On another note - my one concern with Merino is the use of mulesing as a preventative measure against flystrike, which apparently the breed are particularly susceptible to - it's very controversial, to the extent that wool providers or yarn companies have started making it a point to say when their merino comes from sheep that are *not* subjected to mulesing; and so i wondered if you would have mentioned something about that.

    As I rewatched this fascinating video, I wonder if the super fine Merino descriptor means Merino is super fine in comparison to other wool, or are you referring to a sub-category that is even finer than the average Merino fiber? I ask because, I did read a book that spoke of a breeder who had developed a herd whose merino’s produced a fiber that was finer than typical merino.
    I have also heard (disturbingly) that the industry is using the term “merino” to denote a fiber diameter category, not wool just produced by the merino breed.

      Hi Robin -- haha, well, I looked and found these on Amazon: shorturl.at/mMNS5 I've seen some other ones, too, but they have gotten bad ratings for sliding up and being uncomfortable. Not sure about these as they only have two ratings so far. 😊💖

    Unless one is allergic to lanolin.....found in wool of sheep but not in the wool of alpacas . I am hoping the superwash merino can be worn by some of my family members and friends. Frequently those allergic to latex are also allergic(reactions range from severe hiving to respiratory difficulty to requiring Epi use) to lanolin.......I personally know a half dozen people with lanolin allergies and there are many more than that in my latex allergy group. I know 2 people allergic to alpaca wool, People can be allergic to pretty much anything and it is a shame when medical personal ignore that fact. I had to give up my career due to latex allergies and the cross reactive list is getting absurdly long.

    Hi professor! I really love to watch your videos! I’m an older lady stuck in my house because of the pandemic and I have learned so much from you! I made you something so I would like to know if you are still at the same P.O. Box!
