Melbourne Rider ive got a '15 wr450 and in 9000km the valves havent moved. (Bought brand new in 2016) You can leave them and simply check them when you begin to have hard starting issues
09 wr450f and my inlet valves got very tight at 7500km. Became very hard to start and backfired a lot. Fuel mileage also got terrible. Now i changed the oil every 350km and air filter. valves checked once a year. Then one day they just go bad so dont believe they will be fine forever as i did. Some people say they got 20 000km without checking them. Not worth the risk so check those valves.
Valve check and oil filter every 1000km and oil change every 500km for my SMR-511. It's at about 20,000. I bought it at 14,000. I've needed two adjustments since buying it.
Take your air filter out and see how long your valves last. The reason a clean and oiled air filter is so important is it stops small dirt and dust particles "sand blasting" the valve train. The normal hardened coating on valves (or simply being made out of hard light materials like titanium) is what protects them from wear due to the valve guide and seating area. Yes, engine speed makes a huge difference, but it is vastly smaller than improper airfilter maintenance. Remember, even at a cruising speed you'll be at 5-6000 rpm and you idle at around 2000 rpm.
Making me miss the WR450 brahhh :( great bike I did over 130 hours on mine just change oil every now and then she'll be right. I never checked valves but guy that bought it did, was still in spec. 👊 Also get the tuner and try out the "Aussie map" it's great! Agree with you regarding needing fresh knobbies bad, as soon as they're worn a bit wheel spins so bad Oh and on hot days don't let it idle without airflow for too long, the water gets hot fast will hit 100c (trailtech) in no time but you probably already know about that !
ive had a 06 WRF450, and now a 2017 450. Love all WRs. tyre condition and pressures matter. yes they are bomb proof for aussie trails. Valve s every 5000kms, Cam Chain at 30000, And oil every 1-2000. give it some! They love sideways!
Ur registration is outrageous I hope your streets are absolutely perfect maybe if we paid more all our streets and highways wouldn't be absolutely destroyed potholes every where here in California it's shit
im tossing up between a wr450f and a wr250r because of the maintenance issues i think i'll still go the wr450f fuel injected. Last bike was a drz400 got stolen havnt replaced it yet. Had a bad stack on that bike from something this day i still dont actually know what caused it i think a rock flicked up, i ended up with the throttle pinned and the bike shot off into the bush in different direction and i went over the bars and I bounced off 3 decent sized trees. Bent the frame on the drz, had that replaced. Had no broken bones just bruises everywhere, peg went through my shin had about 5 stitches. I actually didnt ride for about 3 months after that, had over a dozen bikes at this point. Was my first propper serious crash after maybe owning maybe 11 bikes, so i go boots armour and the whole lot now. This was on a real rocky section, pin it to win it didnt quite play out the way it did the other 50 times i did it lol. good video. Happened so fast i genuinely thought i was dead but didnt even have time to think about it, just got up looked for bones poking out of my skin bit of blood, all good pretty much. Got a few funny looks limping into mcdonalds for lunch with blood running down my leg.
Moflyboy Blanquito it’s a hard choice mate I test rode one new and seemed to go ok but I understand with a different efi map / tune it’s a totally different bike. There wasn’t much between the drz400 and the wr250r.
Wes T paintninjagc I have not ridden a 450f but I’m not too sure I’m up to the power yet off road that is. That power can get you in trouble pretty fast. And my wr250r is plenty fast. And I suspect way better on the road it’s very fun on the street. Which I think maybe the additional weight but idk. Unless you are in California or somewhere the traffic cruise at 70 you be fine. I could go on I think you will be satisfied with either.
Moflyboy Blanquito hehe I think you need to have a go on a 450f mate. Make the hairs on your neck stand up. just the maintenance but I don’t think it has to be maintained quite as much as people let on about.
That's some crazy expensive reg's. Here in Pennsylvania my bike reg is $24 and car reg is $42. I believe the AUD and the USD are pretty close too. Why are they so expensive there?
Yeah, insurance is included with your rego. In the states, that's a separate bill. At the end of the day, it works out to be pretty similar. But in Queensland and other places they have they ridiculous roadworthy inspections. Any sort of oil leak or anything wrong with the car, they'll write you up. I lost so much money when I left OZ because I had an older car and he wrote me up for anything that could break in the next six months, which is so stupid.
australia is the biggest sellers of yamaha, but we have almost the most expensive bikes. It's bs basically can get a 300cc road bike for half the price of 300c dirt bike/enduro. Pretty sure the enduros are just expensive because they made for both road & offroad And i'm talking about used bikes too, new bikes are un-affordable
I was looking at WR's for sale and started watching this video and noticed I'd just seen it on bikesales. That's weird. The way the number plate is held on was the give away.
Hey tom great videos mate...... just wondering if you have had any major problems with your 450 I've got a 2012 as well and I have drowned it in a very big mud puddle. ....yeah I know I should have looked before I leaped, but I think I have gotten mud into the oil galleries going to the top end. ....do you have any ideas how I could fix it without having to spend 2 grand or more for a rebuild? Any help would be greatly appreciated and keep up the good work with the videos man 😃
Tom if the bike still has the original tyres on them no wonder why you have no grip. Them tyres are old as, same deal with car tyres, they go off in a sense.
@Tom don't you want to buy an ADV bike? I got a KTM 1090 Adventure R with only 300 KM on it for sale for just $17,700. They are awesome bike but not suits my kind of riding.
They do................ I changed my yz450f title into a motorcycle title and put an led bar on it and a baja kit. bought some wr450f wide rims and put some street tires on them.
upshift93 you must not understand how it works then. Find someone , like me... send me your dirt bike title notarized, I’ll transfer it, retitle it, then send it back to you for a $100 , bang! You now have a street legal dirt bike in California. People do this all the time with side by sides with people who live in North Dakota and other states , it’s like a business, you send your title for a small fee and get it back as a on road vehicle just like a car.
MAIL MOTO thank you for doubling up on what I just said People don’t understand how easy it is to really do. They just say it’s impossible because they have never done it.
Honestly it's a waste of time to check valve clearences on those wr450f's. They are very reliable even ask old mate jake he's had his since brand new (2012 I think) and he's riden it a shit tone and only had to adjust it once.
Oil changes are fine.. it’s valve checks/adjustments which is the pain point

The biggest factor is airfilter maintenance. Should be cleaning and oiling the filter after every dirt ride

I had the 450f (licensed) and changed to the wr250r, love the little beast and less tool time.. nice ride btw..
I have both and looks like wr250r I about to sell. I don't have any seat time on either, besides riding through the neighborhood
Because it's the best trail/dirt bike
Check your tyres pressures should be about 10-15psi for enduro, will help with grip and washing out
Awesome vid Tom and luv the sound of that 450!...All your vids are hugely entertaining...Can't wait to see the new sportsbike reveal
Careful with the 450 in twisties tom, trees may come faster than you think
just got one as my first bike feels so natural already ripping it and i only have maybe 4 hours of experience
I have a reck rego on my 250 exc, I love how cheap it is compared to normal road rego
Cheaper to have than a wr450 ?
Hey Tom where abouts are you riding in this video? looks like a great track for mountain biking, and grabbing a wr450 soon too for this kinda stuff
Ur registration is outrageous I hope your streets are absolutely perfect maybe if we paid more all our streets and highways wouldn't be absolutely destroyed potholes every where here in California it's shit
good buy tom how does the power delivery stack up to the old 690 ktm?

I agree, go with the wr450f if you’re in the states, it’s easy to get it street legal and run dual sport tires rated by the DOT
I’m fine with the 250r it’s pretty damn good.
Moflyboy Blanquito it’s a hard choice mate I test rode one new and seemed to go ok but I understand with a different efi map / tune it’s a totally different bike. There wasn’t much between the drz400 and the wr250r.

Love the wrs
That's some crazy expensive reg's. Here in Pennsylvania my bike reg is $24 and car reg is $42. I believe the AUD and the USD are pretty close too. Why are they so expensive there?
Quagmire88 politicians need to find their early retirement

Sam Waters only in some states. In VIC you don't have to have insurance.

Sam Waters sorry I worded that wrong. Full comp isn't compulsory. You're silly if you don't have it but you don't have to.
I was looking at WR's for sale and started watching this video and noticed I'd just seen it on bikesales. That's weird. The way the number plate is held on was the give away.
The 5th bike better be a Vespa .. Or a Honda Motocompo :D Small bikes are so much fun
Would you recommend this bike for a newbie?
Tom if the bike still has the original tyres on them no wonder why you have no grip. Them tyres are old as, same deal with car tyres, they go off in a sense.

@Tom don't you want to buy an ADV bike? I got a KTM 1090 Adventure R with only 300 KM on it for sale for just $17,700.
They are awesome bike but not suits my kind of riding.
Thinking about getting a yamaha wr250f, I've never had an bike before, do you guys recommend it for beginners?, and is it reliable?
MrNz96 yes and yes, through if you want to go onroad its the wr250r you want.
Dude your tyres are bald. Keep fresh tyres on the 450 and you will be safe and more competent.
From 1 litre, how far can it run??
Hey mate your not taking it past 4 grand, oil changes would be a lot less frequent for you my man. :)
Nice mate.
Oil changes take 20mins dont be a baby ;)
What state park is that?
Would like to say a new R6 but you already have the Daytona.
5 bikes Wow!!😮
Why can I only watch this in 480p Tom explain!!
Umm .. because you were sick to death of rebuilding the 690s engine?
I’m saving for a WR450f brand new
Any progress on the new bike?
i wish they would let us street title these in states.
They do................ I changed my yz450f title into a motorcycle title and put an led bar on it and a baja kit. bought some wr450f wide rims and put some street tires on them.

Chris Yeager it's easier in some states than others, good luck doing so in California
