I got a 450 as a novice. Learning was hard but love it. In the tight places I am still slow but on the soft, difficult and bad stuff I fly past the 250's. Just love it
Not surprised a top rider can go slightly faster on the 450. But I think most mortals will have a better and safer time ringing the neck of the 250. Also I think this video makes a good point as to why 350's are so popular now.
Couldn’t agree more I went from a 450 back too, unless you’re riding a lot a 450 destroys you. Better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow, same with road bikes
Rough at your age maybe, but you still know how to rock a bike. And you track has everything but a swamp, and I never did like swamps, so your test made much sense to me. Keep on keeping on, and I'm glad to see you looking healthy.
Very interesting! I did not expect this result at the end. I rode the 450 EXC a lot in the past. Now I am on an 350 EXC, which is really the best from both sides and just perfect for me right now. I added an HGS Slip-On Silencer, which had the effect of a bit more Power in almost every RPM, and bit of less wheight. The sound was not a factor for me. But it isn't bad though. Greetings from Germany. I watch every single video and really enjoy it every time once again. Keep it up that way. 🙂✌🏻
That 450 bites off big chunks and eats every crumb! It’s a serious machine with very few flaws. I will soon pick up my 2025 wr450 and it will be my dedicated woods/everything else bike of my dreams.

But pushing a 450 hard with a skilled rider will give you wins ! Most blokes can’t ride the 450 to it’s full potential and will get hosed by a WR250F.
I'm racing the WR250F in our state Enduro at the moment and I've managed a few top-ten test times over a field full of 350's and 450's. If you can keep the 250F moving, it's very competitive

I jumped on my buddies 250 last weekend and it would be great for the riding we do but it made me appreciate my 450. The 250 does good but my 450 is pissed off. I love the adrenaline shot the 450 gives me.
You looked faster and more importantly comfortable on the 450 in my opinion mate the 250 seemed to struggle off the bottom a fair bit and unless you're a pro level rider it's harder to keep it in the power. I have a my19 WR450F it has the GYTR exhaust FMF muffler etc I actually went back to the OEM muffler and left the GYTR header pipe great combination it slightly detuned the bike even changed the intake sound probably due to more back pressure. not making it bark straight off the bottom made it heaps more fun to ride I found map 2 slightly detuned it a bit more and use it for extremely snotty hills I took the insert out of the muffler and now find it hard to falt. I was comparing the 2 myself and thought about downsizing to the 250 for deep bush riding or with the 250 and 450 being so similar maybe re sleeving it to a 350 now I'm waffling on 😅 great video thanks for sharing mate cheers Happy Trails oh I really like your riding style wish I could rail berms like you do 👌💣
Love my 450 she’s all geared up high speed desert racing and just change map and plug up one air intake and she’s good for single track. One of the best bikes going around at the moment
had 3 x 500exc now the ec 350f feels like the perfect balance of power to weight ,suits me better at 65kg - 52 years old not getting any younger ,at end of the day less fatiguing to ride
Thanks for the video, I'm not as fast as I used to be, I love my mates YZ450fx, but it's to much for me, lol (except in the sand) I cheat now on single track with a FE501 !! Tamer than a race 450 and more grunt than a 250, although I'm shocked how fast the 250s are. A FE450 would suit me as well. I just sold a KTM 350 exc, good bike too, but I missed the grunt of a 500. I sure enjoyed the extra range of the 350 though. I sure wished I had a garage full of bikes, they all ROCK!
I know a 250 is faster in my type of tight bush riding. BUT I love the tractor of a 450 and you dont need to rev it to go places. A 450 you can still be low rpm and smash out a corner. A 250 needs a clutch blip or a downshift. My next ride will be a 350.
Yea I can agree with you when I was a teen and my rider weight was lower I would take a 250 because it was lighter and easier to maneuver! Now at 34 yrs old 6feet1inch and 226 lbs I don't have that option to hold my own! Lol that's alot of beef to ride around on a 250 IMO
@@MRR-qv3bw - That’s what I weigh and I can hang with anyone on my 250fx. I’ve climbed hills that multiple good riders on 250 and 300 2 strokes are struggling with. I bought the bike for my kids, but it’s much more capable than I ever would have imagined. 3rd gear and up I prefer it over my 250xcw.
I have a 300cc 6 gear and i prefer the quick down shifting and upshifting in corners cause once you get used to it You actually use all the power the bike offers Just makes you a overall better rider

I will say it looked like either you or the 450 was making it look effortless in everything but the logs. Where as the 250 seemed to be the opposite, floating over the logs and scraping for everything in the corners and straights.
Nice one Adam 👍. I think it definitely comes down to experience, strength and fitness. You're a strong, pretty fit bloke so a 450 suits you well and you can milk it. A newby, scrawny or out of shape rider will probably do better on the small bore
Great video I have a 2020 yz250fx Yamaha and a older 2014 wr450 . The 450 is more of a open desert bike and the 250fx is fun and light everywhere and doesn't wear me out as quickly but on long fire roads it tops out quickly . Great video..
Another great video 👌 Thanks for sharing. Would be great to run a range like Sherco around the track on the same day and see how they go too. With the 250, 300, 450 and 500 all very similar in the frames, it would be interesting 👍
Good comparison, and I would have guessed the 250 on that loop. I have a slightly tweaked 250 and love it. I found the 450 a bit of a handful when trying to go fast, but that is a rider issue.
As a 215lbs athletic guy and 6ft I enjoy the blunt force trauma of the 450. If I feel I need fast and sexy quick I can muscle the 250 much better. I have one of each and I probably ride 450 2 to 1 over the 250. But when it comes time for me and buddies at the track it’s 250 all day because I want to beat their asses. Great video
I have two KTMs, identical year and chassis. 250 2 stroke and 450 4 stroke. Riding conditions like this on the 450 I feel like I'm riding sloppy, making mistakes, riding slow - and then the stop watch surprises me every time. I'm slower on the 450 but not by much at all. I think the 450 just makes up time out of every corner even if you feel like you're riding like crap. I find myself sitting a lot more on the 450 even if I try to avoid it - I noticed you did this too (rock garden). I stand 99% of the time on the 250. Ok, so the bikes feel different but have similar lap times. BUT the 450 is a work out to ride. My knees get chaffed from holding on which doesn't happen on the 250. It would be interesting for you to do a 2 hour harescramble on that loop on each bike and see which you find more enjoyable after doing that (a week or so apart of course!) I also think that the newer the rider, the tougher time they will have with a big bore. A new rider will learn better on a smaller bike and that will bring more speed for them.
I have a 2018 yz450f now i know it is NOT a woods bike, its a complete animal to wrestle in the woods. I could have sworn you would have been faster on the 250 just because of the weight difference and being more controllable. Good job though nice to see someone not shit on the big boy for once. Hell of a job Sir!
I noticed the boot ruts as well, awesome flog session for the boys in blue. Great real world comparo/ content. Setting the testing standard for dirt bikes on this clip, stop watch does not lie. Did miss ye old CR, probably would of put a dent in that 450 shine.
I cut that loop in with the CR and the first time I did with it was a 7-minute flat. Not sure I'd be quicker on the two-stroke but it could be worth a try ...
I know where the stopwatch came out, but you looked so much more comfortable on the 250. Maybe you were tired when you got to the 450, but there is a big difference in your riding behavior on when approaching obstacles between the two bikes. On the 250, you were riding it, and one many occasions on the 450, it was leading you. Maybe your answer is that Yami needs to build a 350. :)
I just test rode a WR450F today. It has HILARIOUS POWER. As in HOOLIGAN amounts of power. Absolutely ridiculous fun. Gets very hot quickly though, even with a fan installed. In addition, I also rode a WR250F, back-to-back. The 250 felt like it could the same things and more than the 450, although albeit with much less power, but still very fun also. I'm torn between the 2 as they're both the same price. Hilarious, hooliganish fun at the expense of fine control in the tight, stuff? Or sure-fire all-around weapon, at the expense of high-speeds on the road (and fast trails)?
As primarily a desert rider, the size of the logs on your course just look impossible. Got a 500 partly because of you and your videos, but have recently made the decision to give a 2022 KTM 300 XCW TPI a go. Love my 500, and will miss it.
@@joshsmith9058 For sure there will be places where the 500 is the better choice, but I'm pretty sure sand isn't one of them. I've ridden a few 2-strokes in the sand and they feel better to me, especially when turning. My entire ride group rides 250's and 300's, some moved away from 4-strokes and seem very happy overall. The 500 gets me a lot of praise, especially after cleaning technical sections, but it also comes at the expense of all the extra weight and fatigue.
@@chrisbonham7816 Yep, got the 300 and while there are moments I miss the 500, they are rare. It was a great bike, but for the kind of riding I'm doing now not the best choice.
Just wondering, why compare WR's on a wooded single track where you're in 2nd gear the whole time? Wide Ratio, you gotta get them out in the open to see the difference. You should do a time trial on open terrain with some technical stuff mixed in, maybe with some hills to climb 👍
Do any of you folks know if the Aussie WR's are the same WR's that we get in the US? What we get in the US are fairly choked-up, i.e... throttle stop, filter snorkel, milder ECU settings, etc.. I realize all this can be addressed with GYTR or other aftermarket companies, i'm just curious. @ARieman1, awesome dirt/terrain on your property mate. What a killer place to ride!
Can you do a comparison between the WR450f and a TE300i? I realise they’re completely different bikes but it would be cool to see your thoughts comparing the two and who each would be good for in the bush. Also include your thoughts on the commute to and from the trail, on the road for those that have a trail close to their house or even the commute to work like me. I only live 5 mins away from home and when the car is out of action i would take the bike.
WR are awesome Bikes, for the Novice or seasoned rider. Here in the States we have to uncork them to get their full potential. Still wish they had an ECU Map system for the Stateside Bikes.
Great video and awesome riding skills. The test should be done on uncorked bikes. From the factory, these bikes are tuned waaay down. Unplug the intake and exhaust and see what happens.
Faster has so many factors, rider, track condition and guts😁 It all depends. Screw small engine and go bigger. 450 all the way. Subscribing. I think I found a good channel by Recommendation from UA-cam.
Its a shame this bikes cant be street legal here in Portugal anymore...i was just close to get one 250...hope the Yamaha can do something about that...great vídeo 👌
I knew figured the 450 has ton capable of and it is a lottt of motor for intermediate rider for trail and can get wear out quickly when not too familar with the power compare to the TTR bike. So thankfully I'm end up getting a WR250f which to be suitable and proper choice. The 450 goes after mastered the 250/300cc with bunch of hours in it. Just bringing the realistic for the beginner/intermediate rider who's looking for move up to the big boys bike.
Both are great 250 s seem very friendly to all users but still fast when you are experienced but just want to know if there is a big difference in reliability
For trail riding, I think is no difference, but on steep and longer hillclimb the 250 may be too weak? I have a 300 2 stroke and pulls like tractor, when my fiend with exc-f 250 struggle to climb with downshifting to first gear I can gain speed with 3rd. For the higher torque at lower rpm, I would love to buy some day this wr450 model.
You might wanna go research the weight difference, there isnt one, you`re saying so cause idiots have said so, so you believe it. A few kilos is no difference. The old bikes have a big weight difference & by old i mean bikes built in the 70`s.
Owned both and the 450's are way faster but when on a track or trail it's a bit different because the 450 throws you around more and the 250 well is just easier to ride on tracks and trail's which could result in a faster track or trail time with the 250. In saying that I've also owned the YZ 125 two stroke and can honestly say it's lighter and faster on tracks and about the same on trails and I'm nearly 40yrs old and ridden my whole life and owned just about every dirt bike amaginable and honestly had more fun on the 250 four stroke and 125 two stroke. It's really all in how you ride.
When your boots have their own ruts I’d say you’ve ridden it once or twice
Out of all the UA-cam channels out there, by far you are my favorite. Keep up the great content.
I might recommend Fortnine for more high quality motorcycle related content to you.

Good comment & exactly what I thought right at the beginning.
Personally I also prefer a lighter bike, even if it means less power.

It would be interesting for you to do a 2 hour harescramble on that loop on each bike and see which you find more enjoyable after doing that (a week or so apart of course!)
I also think that the newer the rider, the tougher time they will have with a big bore.
Hell of a job Sir!
great vid, well shot too !
Yes finally someone who does not poop on the 450 well done !!! braaap
You really flogged those, and great skill.
i got the 250 and i love it. but i miss this track near my home 😀
Hey I didn't know were WA Enduro champ. Respect. Epic chat with Jase BTW.... Now I'm off to get the MotoNomads. 🤙🤙
Depends on the track, if it’s bigger and open the 450 all day
Would love to see this comparison with the 2022 WR250F with the new frame etc
In the sand I think you won't be happy with the 300 after the 500
@@joshsmith9058 For sure there will be places where the 500 is the better choice, but I'm pretty sure sand isn't one of them.
@@armourbl what was the outcome mate, did you make the right choice?
@@chrisbonham7816 Yep, got the 300 and while there are moments I miss the 500, they are rare. It was a great bike, but for the kind of riding I'm doing now not the best choice.
@@armourbl cheers mate
Our WR's also come heavily restricted and have indicators, mirrors horn etc but all that can easily be removed for off-road use
Wow, just a few seconds in it!
My 500exc forever 250 /350 never. I think you pretty much nailed it. The 500 does all the work. When I ride my 350 I do most of the work
WR are awesome Bikes, for the Novice or seasoned rider. Here in the States we have to uncork them to get their full potential. Still wish they had an ECU Map system for the Stateside Bikes.
80 percent the rider 20 percent the bike.
I enjoy the construction of your experiment
Great video and awesome riding skills. The test should be done on uncorked bikes. From the factory, these bikes are tuned waaay down. Unplug the intake and exhaust and see what happens.
Nice track, also nice video man
My first thought before watching was, whichever goes last will win.
You created a better run to ride in.... and that's how it ended up.
Awsome video man thank you
Hey Adam, great comparison on the WRs. What about the same format for KTM 450 vs 350?
Great channel. Thanks for the blood, sweat and tears you invest!
It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. No seriously, I do love creating moto content...
Awesome track you've got there!
Good one, eh !!
When are you getting back to India... Loved you and your Dad doing the Himalayas
Nice Video! What about rear Tire Size? Are they exactly the same? If not I think that might also have a minute factor...
Faster has so many factors, rider, track condition and guts😁 It all depends. Screw small engine and go bigger. 450 all the way.
Subscribing. I think I found a good channel by Recommendation from UA-cam.
Its a shame this bikes cant be street legal here in Portugal anymore...i was just close to get one 250...hope the Yamaha can do something about that...great vídeo 👌
id love to see you compare the yz250x to the wr450. at least for the same track time comparison.
450’s are so smooth and rideable now, while still being very fast.
Dude is ripping it hard. 🔥
Awesome comparison. Have you done this track on your T7? It would be super interesting to know your time on that bike? Or on the WarHorse! :)
Great video !!
Can I ask what map did you choose on either bike?
The MX power feeling map would be great on the 250.
great vid could you do same test again with full race exhausts on, be good to see any difference in times etc.
Nice work👍👍
Amazing Work
Spot on mate
Where did you get that license plate bracket,,on the Wr250f I need that
Great video! What would be interesting to hear is how much heavier the 450 felt and if you were more tired then on the 250?
You might wanna go research the weight difference, there isnt one, you`re saying so cause idiots have said so, so you believe it. A few kilos is no difference. The old bikes have a big weight difference & by old i mean bikes built in the 70`s.
@Rodney Jones it's about the center of mass. Putting down 45hp is easier than putting down 63hp tho.
