[TF2] Why Demo is Hated

- Some guy decides to go on a drawn out discussion and debate about the Demo, deliberating and deciding that Demo...is dreadfully dull to duel against.
Ten Thousand Subscribers, wowie zowie.
Thanks to everyone who can stand by for several minutes on the sideline while I complain and talk bad about their favourite classes.
In all seriousness, I do thank you guys, I admittedly never really cared about the views or subs but I take pride in knowing the people think I'm entertaining enough to educate them about some aspects of their favourite game either through items they didn't know about, gamemodes or the lore of it.
Maybe I'll do something special to celebrate the occasion?
Never really planned to get this big so fast, maybe a cliche QnA? or playing with viewers? A Patreon for people who want to be in the video who can't find a monkey?
Feel free to comment whatever
Cheers mates.
On unrelated notes, I couldn't really get into the mojo for writing this video, with other classes like Sniper or Spy or Dustbowl, the issues are so blatantly obvious and clear that it takes me little time to actually get to work, with Demo it's really just spam. Which like I said in the video, is a cop out answer to why people could hate him as a class or his bigger problems in the game.
Spam affects every class and it's always going to be effective and annoying so I really tried to dig deep when thinking about Demo, he's a perfectly fine and one of the more balanced classes with Soldier and is in no way OP or in need of a buff or nerf but there are a few annoyances.
Also Poopy Joe; Very easy to spot this time.
Thanks to Three Cubed for finding him last time... and killing me.
Leave a comment with your loadout and a timestamp telling me where Poopy Joe is to have your loadout in the next video...

From my experience although demo may be easy to spam with, he is much easier to kill than a sniper. Hitting pipes is not easy and pipe gods are rare and demo is really fragile in melee range. Demoknight is a bit tricky to kill but it depends on the player and weapons mostly.
Personally I always see a competent demo who can aim a good portion of their shots. Even if they miss, it's difficult running away from their pipes/stickies in time before being blown up. Also, demoknights are somewhat hard to stop, although this is of course depending on how good the demoknight is.
I just see them as free kills as a main scout
@@yo_tengo_una_boca6764 unless demo gets the first hit, it's usually better to get close rather than run away because they take serious self-damage from their own pipes and shooting stickies is way too awkward + detonation time. that's why scouts (and even pyros) can be such a hard counter to demo
@@attilathepun7983 esp pyros. Airblast is good.

I really like the sfm illustrations of points that you make. The video also ended up being more of a class analysis of Demo which touched on why he's hated. This doesn't really match up with the title but it really is a pleasant surprise, as your analysis was great
As a demo main it's really interesting to see these perspectives, I always feel like most of my fights are fair fights and I get rewarded for my skill, like, a scout rushes me and I double pipe him and he's just like "damn" in chat, since players acknowledge how hard pipes are to hit, although I must say when fighting a demo it can get really overwhelming to keep track of all his explosives, for example, you might be trying to dodge his pipes while there's a sticky trap right behind you and you might inevitably run into it, apart from that I don't think there's really that much to hate about demo (except demoknight, fuck demoknight)
Demoknight should be taken as a less dmg heavy with faster move speed and less range, with the targe you have 400 to 470 effective health for fire, but pyros can airblast meaning the only pyro to totally stop a Demoknight is degreeser panic attack.
As a demo (and medic main) I agree, the most interesting fights happen when I play demo
@@davidshotwell2807 pyro, heavy, and sentries (even minis) shut down demoknights
As a pyro main, pipes and stickies are way too soft to hear and forces a reliance on visual queues when fighting demos. It just feels a bit unfair in that regard, considering upping the firing sound volume would buff reaction speed for reflects by ~200ms, something that I rely on for reflecting rockets. With flame particles covering my screen too, stickies are just harder to see and not fun to fight against.
Up close, the game encourages pyros to wm1 demos because missing a reflect at close range (~10m) means getting hit with two pipes before the pyro can do anything, stuck on cooldown. And if the demoman somehow misses (which is hard to do cuz pipes are somewhat easy to hit up close), airblasting a demo away just means u have to chase him down again while he spams u out with stickies.
So unless I have a panic attack when I'm up close on a demo, the game encourages wm1 while dodging pipes and heavily punishes pyro's for missing their reflects, which imo isn't that fun.
@@Junya01 I mean yeah, you are kinda playing with fire by shooting pills at a pyro as he could reflect you at anytime so stickies are my preferred way to deal with them, but if you manage to get close enough to me to w+m1 me well... You got me there, there's not much I can do except try to hit you with pills which will likely make me kill myself with self damage or pull out my melee in desperation, but I mean it's fair, demo's weakness is supposed to be close quarters combat

the loch n load's damage bonus would be practically useless now that damage spread's gone. gun mettle really didn't do that much to it.
also, the eyelander and skullcutter don't have their downsides negated by the bootlegger. the eyelander's downside is canceled out, and the skullcutter's downside is somewhat compensated for. and they're still major downsides for full demoknights.
and one more thing, the loose cannon's projectiles are actually the slowest out of all the grenade launchers due to its massive projectile size.
also, fun fact, the stickybomb launcher and grenade launcher were originally swapped in the loadout menu, so the stickybomb launcher actually was demo's primary for a while.

How dare you say that demopan is a meme, the pan has a 100 percent crit rate
I main demo and I have to admit it’s never really occurred to me that almost all of his melee unlocks are specifically for demoknight. I wonder if something could be designed that boosts his capabilities with pills and/or stickies.
Just give him a gunboat equivalent
The skullcutter used to be the popular choice but I think the speed reduction got added, I also remember seeing ullapol caber being used when it was first released even in competitive games. Now the stock bottle is fine, I'm not sure what else they could do.
@@TheDuckyDino yeah I could definitely see him with the gunboats, but it would probably be more balanced as a Primary slot item.
@@I_love_Grant_Fisher what if he had Pyro’s Homewrecker? He could two-shot all buildings and one-shot mini sentries - all while close range without having to take self-damage. Iron bomber helps make people more consistent, but it's not going to turn you into a pipe god like people think. You still have to play your range smart and lead shots properly or you're going to miss all the same. The rollers being good or bad depends on the geography of the area you're shooting. If it's more closed in then having a stock roller is more controllable and controls space longer
It does help you hit easier pipes, but it's not a bigger difference than like 3-4 per game, people blow it out of proportion, yes it needs to be fixed but it's not that huge of a problem
Pretty funny to here sensei’s theme in these videos.
One positive of the quickie launcher that I guess it takes from the scottish resistance is that thing where it breaks other stickies, making it really helpful in shutting down sticky traps that you don't want to just blow away instead
This channel, this one right here, a hidden gem.
People get salty about anything that can instakill them even though it really isn't that huge of a deal and there are ways you can often counter the instakills by not putting yourself in the position to be instakilled.
"demomains are fucking annoying and need to die"
>walks into pipes and does no counter strategy at all
"Demomains are op"
*me watching my teammates consistently falling for the same sticky trap and getting mad i won't heal them as they go through said sticky trap*
"not putting yourself in the position to be instakilled"
Badwater first red spawn, upward first red spawn, Borneo first red spawn, Borneo third blu spawn, cp_steel's full health pack room at C point where demos can place stickies above to kill people upstairs, etc etc
None of the places mentioned above are things a player could react to unless someone died first to tell their team. And that first person to die literally can't do anything about it to counter. Spawn camping one-exit spawn rooms/abusing map exploits to get easy instakills feels cheap to die to, which is what most people get mad about I suppose

@@SpaceGuyOnline oh god
I see what you did there with the Base Jumper. Fitting.
Just imagine the person to find poopy Joe is a yeti heavy main and will only make monke sounds.
Demo is, at least IMO, the most balanced class in the game. He is capable of dealing the damage of an atom bomb at mid range, and thrives in chokepoints. Good demomen are capable of doing well even in relatively open areas, but he is very vulnerable to being rushed by scouts and pyros. Due to him taking self-damage, if you get up in his face and have done enough damage to him he'll probably be, if not dead, clinging on for dear life. Good demomen try to prevent this from happening, but once you have him, there's a 99% chance that he's dead. He is also countered by Sniper, due to him not having long range, and Spy, due to the fact that coordinating pipes and stickies to their maximum potential takes a lot of practice and concentration. He's also very hard to play to his full effectiveness. Sure, stickyspamming is easy, but making full use of the stickybomb launcher's area control in combination with the raw damage output of pipes is genuinely difficult and something that most people are absolutely not able to do. Demo also takes a very long time to fully reload his 12 projectiles, meaning that he is vulnerable during this time. A smart player can make use of that and rush him when they've calculated that he's out of ammo. Demo without overheal also isn't as mobile as he can be, so sometimes he can be caught as a sitting duck. Demo is immensely powerful if used correctly, but there are significant weaknesses to his kit that decent players can exploit to consistently kill good demomen.
Now, keep in mind that I am a demoman main, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
In all seriousness, base jumper is amazing for ruining hightower servers. Float above the enemy spawn doors and rain down stickies, racks up very quick killstreaks until they realize there’s a terrorist outside.

What I don't like: Audio mixing isn't balanced for sound effects and misc. voice lines. Background music and your audio was right, just work on the misc. sfx.
The skit at the end of the video was shifting focus and derailing the main idea of the video.

You can’t use Sensi’s theme and expect me to pay attention while jamming out
Sensei's theme right as demo starts parachuting, nice.
sensei's theme for the base jumper and sticky spam, nice choice
Demo isn't really a big problem (However, they should nerf the ease of the sticky launcher's reload to make it harder to spam) - the real problem is old maps. They're extremely cramped and filled with chock points without real flank routes. This makes demo just dominate any server in 99% of the cases. I remember I was just furious because of the class when I was a newbie who played on 2fort, goldrush, and dustbowl. However, the problem instantly disappeared as soon as I realized these maps are outdated s**t, and went to play on the decent ones.
the short circuit is basically for me, it was very overpowered on chokey maps but on open maps it is less of a problem
@@asdasf8817 Exactly. A lot of balance problems are born on the old poorly designed maps so better map rotation is the actual solution to many of them.

The Scottish Resistance is so underrated. You can literally become a sniper without the need for a sightline. Just place traps in good spots, and the moment someone calls them out, ka-boom,dead. One time I was on Upward defense, and I was locking the enemy out by just putting stickies on walls and putting them back up on the walls. The best part about the SR is by far how unpopular it is. In my personal experience, most of the Demoman kills i've gotten, or killed by, always felt like unfair as fuck.
Sticky spamming is one of the most effective, yet annoying things to fight agaisnt, and every demo man acknowledges this, leading to some annoying motherfuckers to deal with, even with a Pocket.
People complain about how Sniper has options to totally nulify his biggest weakness, but despite Demo being suposed to have this same disadvantage, he has FAR more options than Sniper and more reliable ones to live.
Sniper has the Jarate or SMG (if skilled enough) to counter one of the most (Or few) effective ways to take him out.
Demo, on the other hand, has:
The Loose Cannon, as a "Get out of me" or "Sticky Jumper 2"
The Quickiebomb Launcher, as a faster way to spam...
Scotsman Skullcutter, to buff him in what's suposed to be one of his weakness
The Eyelander, to give him even more window of landing his melee hits on targets that are likely to be damaged and get oneshoted, + giving him a speed AND health boost
The Sticky Jumper, as a "Get out of jail free" card
And any of his shields, as basically the same as the Sticky Jumper, but a lot more versatile in my perspective.
Demo counters a lot of shit
Heavies, Engineers, Medics, and Soldiers, but this last one is specific to Chokepoints or really closed areas.
Sniper, on the other hand, while being able to insta-kill anything, the skill needed to pull these consistently, or properly enough to even be considered a threat, is not even near the FUCKING LOW skill ceiling Demoman needs.
If i get killed by a Pipe, I don't feel cheated, I admire the prediction and aim of the Demoman that kills me.
If i get killed by a sticky trap, I feel it was totally my fault for being clueless and not expecting the Demoman of seeing me coming.
However, if I get killed with a brainless amount of stickyspam, any of the Swords with their janky hitboxes (Or with a crit of any melee weapon but that is conversation for another day) when trying to do what i'm suposed to do to counter Demos (...or snipers), I do feel like I didn't even had a chance to do anything, mostly when playing Engineer or Medic.
Demo is less overwhelming than Sniper from my perspective, but he's far more exploitable with a lower skill ceiling required to be more effective than a decent Sniper.
Love to all Demoman mains here that know how to aim their pipes! Mad respect for all of you.
About the Iron Bomber: don't forget that due to a glitch, it has an 800% increased hitbox size, making it literally eight times easier to aim than stock with no downside.
This was a cool vid :) i like that you were very thorough on his roster of death-inducing armaments. Could we get a Scout one sometime too?
3:40 did that crit pipe just bounce off the heavy and hit the spy directly?
I don't understand why you think people using skill, aim and good positioning in return being rewarded with High damage is somehow unfair
No like I seriously don't get how most of this stuff is annoying
(Yes sticky spam is annoying but after the first death ya know he's there)
(Also demoknight? Just go engie... Or pyro...)
Edit:
Ok thinking back maybe I interpreted the point of the video Incorrectly but like I still believe he's making demo seem way more frustrating then he actually is in game.
nobody is saying that its unfair, its just extemely annoying
yes an immediately detonated sticky does like 60 damage?, doesnt kill anyone but its still annoying
but still, i think demo should never be NOT annoying since its kinda the spirit of demoman at this point one of the things that make tf2 tf2
The thing is that he has too many ways to deal insane damage with little effort and little penalty. Even with bad aim and positioning, he can put out insane numbers
@Dark Bowserjust like literally every class in the godamm game demoman can utilize certain "strategies" of which requires little to no skill from the user while being moderately effective. ALSO like every class In the game this is easily countered after the first kill. This isnt a giant issue nor is it really mean demo is not frustrating at all. What I'm saying is that like 90% of what this guy is saying is not even effective and easily countered. But yes sticky spam is frustrating.
No like Im not kidding EVERY class has something like this . this does not make demo so op!plz nerf??!!? and like all the other classes after your first death to them they're very easily countered.
@@achicken410 stickys maybe but please show me how a f2p can do big damage with the grenade launcher. May I add stickys take forever to reload and deal self damage and take time to arm so a bad demo is easily punished if they're caught out of position.
didnt even die by stickies in the beginning actually crying
