    Kellogg was a great villain.
    Mainly because he wasn't evil for the sake of it. He was a jaded merc and all the horrible things he did were impersonal. He had a rough life and from that, a pessimistic view on the world around him. Even with all that he had some sort of moral code or atleast an understanding of one as he obviously regretted killing off one of the parents. Probably because he had a family of his own at one point and understands the pain of losing them.

    You know, something interesting about FO4 is that it ties all the games together, largely thanks to Kellog.
    The formation of the NCR & working for the Shi, which ties the originals and NV in, the BOS and Android quest from FO3 was heavily involved in FO4, etc..
    Also Kellogg has probably the best voice actor I’ve heard in any Bethesda game.

    Perhaps the best bit about how Kellogg was introduced to us (the players) is that we only got to know him better AFTER we killed him. We didn't get to choose our course of action after learning about someone, letting us ponder our actions after they were done. Which... is nothing short of what real life is.

      Kellog is the best FO character ever because he's real, he shows the consequence of horrible parenting and life decisions, the way they did it, as you said was very clever in that, we retroactively get to hear about why he was such a PoS, and it wasn't all his fault.
      We get the sense of "this world sucks and raises monsters" we reflect on our actions and the thought comes to mind that no, he wasn't just some mindless monster... he was a consequence of the wastelands brutality. Almost a victim, in a sense, in his own right.
      Then we meet Cait... and instead of her becoming Kellog, she travels the path less traveled, and she is redeemed. This is significant and ties the feelings together in a surprisingly clever and complex way with many variables of when or if we even meet her and follow her story as well.

You focus on the petty bullshit, or the next job, or whatever. It's only looking back by comparison with what comes after that you really understand, that's what happiness felt like." man thats the best line in this whole game.

    As I've joined the military and gone through the standard mental changes, I've started looking at Kellogg differently. His mother gave him his pistol, and said "the only thing that will protect you is that gun in your hand." He was raised in a home filled with toxicity. When he was with his wife and daughter he brought the "only I can protect myself and my family" logic with him as he gestures with his 44 saying "this is whats going to keep us safe" he had optimism, he truly cared for his family, and then he stepped on a snake. His family was killed and he took revenge, he's like the sole survivor in a way, avenging his family. After that he took whatever merc job needed done if the caps were good enough, he looked back on his life and thought he never deserved the happiness he had, a while later he finds the institute and proves himself worthy of their employment, he does their wetwork eventually taking Shaun and shooting the Sole Survivor's spouse, after the synth program his gen 3 and then the child synth testing, he was assigned to take down Virgil, that's when we take his life. Many players follow much the same path as Kellogg in fallout 4, doing whatever is necessary within their faction, killing non humans in the brotherhood, freeing synths and becoming a saboteur for the railroad, or becoming the director of the institute, and taking the wasteland for testing. We do all of this and yet we are somehow the "good guy" Kellogg did the same as us, even showing remorse, he admitted as much in his memories, but to most he's still the monster, the one to be hunted by Zammiel, the sinner to be punished by the seraph's fury known as the Sole Survivor. We are the same as Kellogg, we just had more of a choice in how we redeemed ourself in the dlc with saving the synths and the harbormen, and in nuka world when we have the opportunity to take the raiders out, letting the merchants turn nuka world into a place of trade. If you as the player took the raider's side in NW, you're just like Kellogg, if you let the harbormen die, you're like Kellogg, if you took revenge on Kellogg for any reason other than getting closer to Shaun, you're like Kellogg. 2 sides of the same coin, he is the beast within, and we are the docile dog without.

    Personally, I feel like he's far more tragic than you think. The way he phrases things and structures them, I don't feel like he's excusing himself but rather explaining himself. The whole way through, he sounded regretful to me. Saying the girl he loved deserved better than someone like him, I don't think he was saying that's just how he is but rather that that's who he made himself, and that the fact he chose to be that is what he's berating. Not so much an "oh well" as a kind of deep regret for who he is. I don't think he was making excuses so much as deprecating himself for the choices he made and the person he became. He came off like a decent person who'd allowed himself to become something awful, and hated himself for it. I don't believe he's a coward, but rather a depressed, broken man who's lost his chance at happiness and is resigned to whatever the hell life is going to toss his way next. I'd also like to mention he seemed genuinely regretful of what he did to the sole survivor, and I could swear there was an edge of spite and sarcasm to his comments on having his orders. He tried to let your spouse live, but they struggled too much. He came off like he really didn't want to do it. And he was audibly uncomfortable with the callous behavior of the institute, correcting the scientist when he called shawn "genetic material." I got the impression that his fight with you was a man who was tired of doing evil handing revenge to the person he viewed as his equal as a means of penance and escape. He'd locked himself into a path he no longer viewed as the right decision, and it was the only way he could think of to stop the gears he'd set in motion himself, viewing his own life as a pittance to throw a wrench in the Institute's plans. He stopped valuing himself long ago, so I imagine he wouldn't have cared much about dying, and probably welcomed it.

    • @shadowthenutjob
      @shadowthenutjob 6 років тому +47

      I cared more about voicing my interpretation, honestly. I don't really care if he's "interested" in what I have to say. Hell, I don't expect he'll even read it. But thank you for the response/word of warning. I personally find his philosophical bias a bit ridiculous, partly because his beliefs strongly mirror my own, but filtered through a black and white lens I can't help but view as slightly childish or simple. I guess he hits a moral uncanny valley for me, but nonetheless I still respect his views and it's honestly just fun to discuss different perspectives.

Got to agree with Alex here, you're running way too far with the very little humanity Kellogg showed. I'm re-playing Fallout 4, so I know this is all quite dated now, but I had a theory that I wanted to bounce off of you(if you are even still reading comments on these old videos). I think that Kellogg being assigned to move in with SynthShaun in Diamond City was a calculated psychological attack on Kellogg by Father. Father was reminding Kellogg what it was like to have a family by having him take care of a copy of the child whom he essentially orphaned. He knows the wrath he had for those that killed his family and he had to know that this same vengeance was coming for him, that he had become one of the monsters he slaughtered, and that he deserved to face the justice that he had given to his family's killers. If Kellogg were to ambush the SoleSurvivor using the stealthboy that he has especially when the SoleSurvivor was distracted by turrets and/or G1 Synths, it would be very difficult to survive. But, just as he feared, letting someone in made him soft; soft enough to try to talk with the SoleSurvivor several times instead of taking him out in a brutally efficient professional manner. That's my 2 cents anyways.

With all the parts I have in me, he's probably more human than I am. Well, lets face it, I stopped being a human long before those eggheads started swapping out my parts. I've done monstrous things like orphan this kid, well, not this copy, but the real one. Now look at him, a zealot for those soulless Institute types that had him abducted.

    Kellog feels like such a wasted character. His backstory is so interesting and his character was so compelling. It feels like such a waste that this well-voiced bad guy gets capped so quickly before the story even gets rolling. Disappointing the only way you can resolve the mission is scattering his brain matter.

Sure, Kellogg was a psycho and serial murderer, but he didn't toy with the lives of his victims and their families, torture and enslave artificially intelligent lifeforms, and he doesn't run the biggest asshole faction in the Fallout universe, even worse than Maxson's brotherhood when it comes to anti-ghoul, anti-synth behaviors. The Institute reminds me a lot of the Enclave, and would most likely create a counter-FEV that kills everyone not born in a vault or before the war and not ghoulified, if given the chance.

    I agree with all of your morals Ox. You're a great guy. But I've been a victim of the world around me myself. At 13 I was abandoned by my mother's family during a crisis time. My mother was in prison and the state had custody of me. At any point any of them could have come and gotten me. They're response? "You're mother needs to learn her lesson. You'd be better off." My dad (the hero of my life) drove from Houston Texas to St. George Utah to rescue me. I hated my family and disowned them. It made me bitter. I drank like a fish and found other comforts to ease my trauma. It wasn't until my wife was with child that I turned myself around, and it wasn't until we lost that child that I learned true self control.

    I dont think he really victimized himself. I think that after he lost everything he cared for he just stopped caring... about everything. I dont think he was trying to run away from his loss either, I doubt he even realised that it was what he was doing until long after. He just focused on earning caps and surviving another day.
    First time I played I longed for revenge, to kill Kellogg, but since I walked through his memories I dont have the same drive to kill him. I can't help but to see him as some wounded animal. I only do it now (except for quest reasons) to put him out of his misery. My quest for revenge has permanently turned into a quest for mercy

    Kellogg in my opinion is easily the best, most fleshed out character in the entire game, and it breaks my heart that there was only one way to resolve that ending. By the time you went through the entire process of learning about Kellogg, it felt hollow to kill him, there was no vengeance in it. It was just, hollow and bleak.

    • @skyhop
      @skyhop 7 років тому +47

      That's the point, revenge is always hollow and bleak, there's no satisfaction in it. It's brilliant storytelling to direct it as such. I feel as though that they didn't do a good enough job making you want to kill him before meeting him though, as it would have made us connect better to the sole survivor, and make that plot point work a little better.

    • @Canadiannerf
      @Canadiannerf 7 років тому +28

    • @KeyWiteWolf
      @KeyWiteWolf 7 років тому +18

      I know its not gonna be a popular opinion, but I'm glad we didn't get a "mercy" option. Because in the context of this situation, it would not have made sense. Consider, not just the sole survivor's feelings in that moment, but Kellogg's. He *wants* you to end him. He knows what he's done, the path he's lead. He actually respects you for making it this far, and when you were spared in the beginning he knew deep down, that one day you would come for him. He was waiting for it, I think. It fits with the twisted sense of the world he has, its a sort of justice for all he's done. Things coming full circle and all that. I really think, if there was a dialog option to "spare" him, that he would have called you a fool or coward and then shot himself. Seriously, that outcome would have been in keeping with the character we see. He is not going to accept mercy. And he certainly won't allow himself to be "rehabilitated".
      Don't get me wrong, I wish there were more peaceful options sometimes, and I prefer that approach in my own life. But in this game we are playing the role of the sole survivor, and some of that story and attitude is set from the beginning. I don't hate it as much as some people, since I have played RPGs for years and am used to sometimes playing the role I am handed. And in this story, this really was the only way it could end. Its a shame this is the last of Kellogg, but again, he was done I think. He'd had a decent run, much longer then he ever planned. And he hated his life and the world that made him the way he was. Your revenge for your family, and learning about the institute from him before his death, are the closest he gets to a redemption.
      And the sole survivor isn't likely going to spare him, even if they are a morally good character, since they know without a doubt he will keep killing people. Its literally all he knows. Sometimes in life there are situations like this, a sort of no-win scenario. But I do think this encounter was handled well. I do think it was in character. Because like I said, no matter how much you the player might have wanted him as a companion or wanted to "redeem" him, it would have not fit the person we have seen. He would never have accepted it. And I applaud Bethesda for making such a fleshed out character, and for letting him have the end he both wanted and deserved. Its nice to have choices in an RPG, but its not truly a *story* unless some things you can't control. That's what makes the choices you do get all the more powerful.

    The best villains don't start as villains but are turned into one. Kellogg's a perfect example. Son of a raider and an idiot who had the gall to give a child a Magnum Revolver. That much disfunction has away to create social misfits. Then his wife and duaghter are killed by someone he apparently "fucked with". And since he couldn't do anything else other than killing, his mind eventually became twisted. But he isn't... evil. He's a puppet.

    I have to disagree, Oxhorn. Kellogg isn't scared of the sole survivor at Fort Hagen. The man is a contracted mercenary that has been killing for almost 90 years at this point. He has little to be scared of after all he has likely seen and experienced by this point in his life. Fear is probably something he has conquered long since. I believe he has some pity for the sole survivor, given his reaction to living with the child synth and perhaps it is his memories of this and losing one family that never really was one and then losing one that he truly loved is why he was willing to talk the sole survivor instead of just out and out attacking them in Fort Hagen. He was a man who had very little emotion left and resigned himself to the position of of cog in a machine or a pawn on the chessboard. He probably didn't even care if he really lived or died at this point.

    One thing that *really* bothered me throughout this entire video is how you state that "Kellogg excused himself for being evil because the world is evil" or something along those lines with the same meaning. He never excuses himself, heck he even says he is a bad person that doesn't deserve to be happy. He is clearly suffering from more than a few mental issues. That being said, he is outright honest with you. However, he does claim that the world is evil and the he himself is evil. That is his view of the world after everything that has happened with him and the dude has lived a long life, he'll probably have a more extensive view of the world than anyone.
    Especially when you consider the fact that he has been involved with a lot of groups of people. He's seen a lot of people, people who think differently and act differently. He has without a doubt met beings of pure evil, and beings of pure good. He knows the difference, and he knows that he is incapable of being "good". He believes that his natural place in the world is that of evil. He blames himself constantly, not the world for how things turned out. He used to blame the world, but in his later years, he blames himself.

      Aaron Brown I wouldn't go that far at all.. 75% of the world's population wouldn't last a week in a Shit Hit The Fan scenario like a nuclear apocalypse.
      In the Fallout universe, anyone with an extended age seems to take a very polarized view of the world. On one hand, you have Carol from The Underworld who remembers the day the bombs fell, and she's just about the sweetest and most caring person in the game. On the other hand, you have people like Kellogg and Cabot, who see absolutely no value in human life beside their own. You can draw any conclusion you want to about what goes on in the minds of someone with an extended lifespan, but the main point is people weren't meant to live that long. Anyone who maintains a long life span, while still being conscious, will probably have numerous disorders and serious mental flaws. Killing Kellogg was a mercy killing. No different that putting down a dangerous animal. Maybe years ago, he couldn't been rehabilitated, but in the fallout universe there's no such thing as a second chance. He rolled the dice, and he pays the tab that all men owe eventually. Just another story from a sad and broken world...
      (Edit: changed 'Carol from Underwear' to 'Carol from Underworld' despite comedic value.

      @mrblack5145 6 років тому

      TrueFinalBoss OfEverything I can respect the agree to disagree part. And you are right, in the case of Cabot. Perhaps he's not the best example of longevity. But 200 years of conscience is enough to develop a lot of mental issues. It isn't natural, which is why those that have lived that along have been tainted by radiation or FEV. That being said, I think it would be hard to differentiate between mental health factors brought on by only age, untouched by any other factors; there's no control group, so to speak, of a perfectly healthy human who has lived that long, that we can use to mark as a control.

    I really got to fundamentally disagree with your conclusions about Kellogg. He is not a victim who believes that others are justified to being victimized by being weak. I can see why you would make such a point, but I personally believe that he simply doesn't give a fuck. He suffered so much and went through so much that he simply does not care anymore. He got beaten, punished and such and in the end, he simply went "fuck it"; it is something I can understand. To me, Kellogg is one of the best characters and it is real shame that we can't keep him alive. It is good to stand against horrible things that happened to you and stay good but how many bad guys like that we have for one good person who managed to "remain good"? Kellogg is kinda the character who I feel gets Sole Survivor the most. Wish we could keep him alive and maybe help him feel better.
    Also, here is another thought: if fools learn only based on their own mistakes, then everyone is a fool.
    EDIT: Also, kinda disagree at the last bit. The reason why Kellogg gets "scared" is because he knows that your character went through the same thing he did; so he knows that you are dangerous. Not because you have Piper or Nick or BoS but because you hurt. It really sucks how game almost forces you to be rude to him in the moment instead of being like, "Yeah, let's fight it out and see who is better." At the end, his last words, I think, are meant to show that he admits that Sole Survivor is strong.

Everything he gave a fuck about was long gone and getting revenge for his family was the last thing he really gave a shit about. So after that he was just like "Now what?". He never really found anything to care about after that so he just soldiered on... simply tried to exist and survive. Probably wishing someone would smoke him but his survivor's instinct prevented him from committing suicide and his excellent combat prowess kept others from doing it for him for a really, really long time. If he got the chance to spread the pain around here and there along the way, it was just a sick perk of the job.

    Kellogg's mom is awful, but she does have a point with the gun. Especially in the Capital Wasteland, there is nobody near you to protect you if something happens, so you need a gun. It's something I think about in America as well. A *LOT* can happen in the 5-30 minutes it takes for a police officer to finally show up on scene, and you usually only ever get a few seconds to protect yourself IRL. So I think people that go around, expecting the police to always have their backs and protect their families are just absurd.

      There would of have had to of been. Kellogg refers to someone as "Old man". The entire time. Even when retrieving the real baby Shaun. Father IS Shaun after 60 years pass after your son is kidnapped. So who was he referencing to as "Old man" if baby Shaun wasn't old yet?

    I agree with you Oxhorn! Part of Kellogg's problem is the way he was raised. If he had a better childhood, he wouldn't have had so much hatred and anger. At the same time, Kellogg also had himself to blame for making such poor decisions. So a mixture of both bad parents and bad choices led him to being such a villain of the storyline. I have a mixture of sadness over his childhood and anger over his personal decisions afterwards

    I agree wholeheartedly with almost everything said here, (well done sir) but I would like to give my two cents on your saying of "A wise man learns from the wisdom of others, while the fool learns by experience."
    I would say rather that the fortunate and the clever learn from the experiences of others, while the reckless and the unfortunate learn through experience. By the end, though, I would say that either one of those paths can lead to wisdom.
    The fool, though, the fool is someone who never learns at all. And Kellogg? Even after knowing first hand what it was to suffer, even having all the skill and knowledge to fight and survive in the wasteland, to simply press on hurting others and killing for no greater reason than because that was the life he knew...?
    Yes. Kellogg was, indeed, a fool.

      The Vaas comparison is actually really, really apt - Both Vaas and Kellog are characters who:
      - kill and take family/ friends from you at the start of both games.
      - Are dark mirrors of the morality of the locations that both games take place in.
      - Are potential dark mirror images of the protagonist and their own journey.
      - Both get killed off relatively early in both games, which is odd considering the development both of them received.
      - Both of them are also nihilistic to the extreme and are uncooperative with the protagonist's goals/ aims due to their very different life views.
      - Both of them also act as "gateways" to the main threat or antagonists of both games (Hoyt, for Far Cry 3, and the Institute/ Brotherhood for F4)

    I don't know, Ox. You seem to be overly condescending towards Kellogg. I mean, you talk of good men in the broken world: alright, it can be possible. But the Sole Survivor can be as cruel, or even crueler than Kellogg, depending on the player. Whilst I'm not trying to rationalize murder, I'm saying that the wound that make a man broken are hard to mend. You often repeat yourself, calling him weak. I wouldn't really call the man weak, simply broken, driven by his basic and animal instincts. Kellogg doesn't see right or wrong: not for most of his life.
    So I love your videos, I really enjoy them and I'm gonna continue to watch the crap outta them. But you asked for an opinion. My opinion is that your moral fiber is vastly different from Kellogg's. Be it by the world he lives in, by his uprising, by his mistakes. The point is that I prefer when you analyze characters, I enjoy that greatly. But there is a thin line between analyzing and comparing.
    That world is broken. Can it be changed? Yes. But it ain't easy. Especially for the folk who prefer to live.

    • @anthonylongoria2638
      @anthonylongoria2638 6 років тому +1

      Even by the Fallout universes morality Kellogg is far from good, Nick makes that pretty clear. Kellogg grew up in NCR territory, we've met characters who had worse lives than him and still came out with some sense or right and wrong such as Cait who was abused for 18 years only to be sold to slavers. But I do get what your saying, the only issue is there's not much to Kellogg, only a few bits here and there, a couple of paragraphs at best.

And I don’t mind him stating his opinion about Kellogg ONCE but he droned on and on about it and what he thought about Kellogg/morality. In a game about making decisions, moral and otherwise, for ourselves we don’t need someone to do it for us, or at least forcing theirs on us.
