A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ UA-cam. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of UA-cam I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on UA-cam won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This UA-cam channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different
This is a reaction video used to educated and give my feedback on the song and artist

What you heard was the genius of Brian Wilson.
I believe Brian considered this his masterpiece
Brian was well beyond a genius. He was widely sort out by all the biggest musicians in the world to help them make music.
Now you're going to have to watch the Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello beach movies to really understand.
@@mikekelly5491 dick dale ! link wray !

"Why am I boppin' my head this early?"
Welcome to 60's music
Just enjoy the ride
I'm not a 60's girl, I was born in 84 but thank God my parents didn't ever let me control the radio, because of them I know all music from around the 50s on! Today's music doesn't compare!
@@Sg4809 I agree! I don't really listen to modern music. For me it's 50s - 70s (maybe some 80s) and country (pre-00s mostly).
I'm not sure if the Beach Boys created the surfing music or the surfing "era" created them but it is certain that The Beach Boys brought the popular music of that era, late 60s to mid-70s, to a new and higher level and they opened the industry to synthesized sounds and music. You may have noticed they were all great vocalists who harmonized magnificently. Their contributions to the industry are difficult to fully account.
Why? Three words. Brian Douglas Wilson.
You need to have the context. This was the most expensively produced record of its time. Brian Wilson made his own genre of music and always experimenting. Nothing today can even touch this genius.
Recorded in 1966 just for context. Amazing recording.
He was kinda competing with the Beatles and I think Pet Sounds was ahead of its time moreso than anything the Beatles had yet done. Then you got Revolver and Sgt Peppers while Brian Wilson was having a mental breakdown. Beach Boys are the most overlooked band of the 60s in terms of how influential they were
My Mom called them "Americas Band" (in other words, the US alternative to the Beatles)
@@ptkelly80 yeah and Brian Wilson made Pet Sounds to compete with Rubber Soul
@@ptkelly80 He said that God Only Knows is the best song ever written.
"God Only Knows" is another excellent follow-up.
And now you have context for a '90s tangent: "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies, which is about the Beach Boys' front man's tangle with bad depression. (Wilson was a very good sport about this and covered the song himself.)
I'm lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did.
@@SPAMDAGGER22 I can understand...
"God Only Knows is an excellent choice. It's funny that so few know it. (Hint: folks, If you cried in the last couple of minutes of Love Actually, this song is the reason. Otherwise it would just be random people hugging.)
@@vapoet "God Only Knows" is a great one!" .....like "In My Room!!!"
Hell yeah your so right as is California Girls or Heroes And Villains from Smile.
The Beach Boys had Wouldn't it be nice, Surfin USA, Fun fun fun, and I get around.
Some of those but everyone's reacted to wouldn't it be nice the others need some attention.
And then once he's heard 'Surfings USA' he should listen to 'Sweet Little Sixteen' by Chuck Berry, like to hear his thoughts on the 'did they steal that from him or was it an honest mistake' debate.
Votes for "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice"
Help me Rhonda.
Let's stop with the goofy beach songs and go for the big ones. God Only Knows is a masterpiece and brought even Paul McCartney to tears. He considers it the greatest pop song ever made. If he could, I'd say do the entire "Pet Sounds" album.
Beach Boys - Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame 1988. Sold over 100 million records. Good Vibrations = its a vibe :)
The Beach Boys and the Beatles were pushing the envelope of what a pop song could be between 1964-1968.
Yess i think the most important music culture wise was made between 64 to 70 with the war, summer of love, flower power and all that. Music has never ever been more important or experimental
@@jimmykarlsson2567 also look into how big an influence Bob Dylan was at that time Especially
The Beatles were just upstairs !!! But I love so many bands of that décade. Brilliant musicians, composers, and those vocals and harmonies. The Beach boys are so good !!!
These were some of the smoothest harmonies on the air waves in the 60s. LOVE the Beach Boys and the whole surfin' music scene, still!
Your reaction to this makes me smile. Music brings us all together. A young black man from Louisiana and an OLD white guy from Texas coming together over a great song.
Barbara ann and California girls are classics as well as surfin USA, plus no one else has really done those be one of the first for those beach boy songs.
A groundbreaking song from a groundbreaking group that even influenced the Beatles in the late 1960s.
True that. Paul McCartney has stated the God Only Knows is perfect and shows the genius of Brian Wilson.
Hey, Para...that would be the EARLY sixties! LOL. I was there listening to them when they first came out.
Pet Sounds was a wake up call to the Beatles.
Nah, the Beatles have been playing much longer than the beach boys.
@@gulagfingerprint3696
Being a child, you don’t know what your talking about. Google “Beach Boys influences Beatles”, and you will read the influence they had on the Beatles’ late 1960s career. Paul himself discussed it and says the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” is the greatest pop song ever written.
And The Beatles broke up in 1970. The Beach Boys are technically still formed and touring.
Sheesh… these know-it-all kids.
Several things come to my mind when I hear reaction videos. One is bringing a younger generation to the music that was older guys grew up with. The other thing is, that music knows no boundaries. When I watch African americans, white americans, liking different genres of music, it shows me that we are all one. It's good to be an American with a diverse community enjoying each other.
The Beach Boys are "surf rock". Not every song of theirs is centered around surfing or even the beach, but it's more centered around the cruising lifestyle of Southern California in the '60s. A lot of romance, a lot of partying, and a lot of cars. Check out Sloop John B, Help Me Rhonda, California Girls, I Get Around, Surfin' USA, Kokomo, Barbara Ann, Wouldn't It Be Nice, and God Only Knows (really bittersweet for me and I'm probably not the only one) to really get started on them. This is one of those bands where you have to dive pretty deep into their albums to find a bad song.
Sloop John B. I was in Elementary school late 60's-70's. The school's Music Teacher was also the organist for the local church, and thought of herself as an opera singer. EVERY music class for 8 years we had to listen to her SCREACH opera!! However, I remember one year, 5th grade, 6th grade?) the songbook had Sloop John B in it. We students requested that song every music class!
honestly, i’m a huge beach boys fanatic and their early stuff is surf rock, and because of that their later stuff doesn’t get as much attention. i consider them as a genuine rock band. pet sounds, sunflower, surfs up, 20/20, wild honey are all perfect examples of them expanding their musical abilities and songwriting without including any surf rock at all. you should check those albums out, they’re really good. same with the smile sessions, though that albums never came out because of the many different problems brian wilson was facing at the time.
@@billsager5634 🤣
Sloop John B is a masterpiece.
@@angeles_faith I absolutely adore post pet sounds beach boys....but I bloody hate their surfin' years.
Beach Boys - Sloop John B
Sloop John B is my favorite BB song!!
Kokomo, Barbara Ann, Surfin' safari, California girls are some other good Beach boys songs trust me there's plenty more
Don't forget 409. A song about a fast car is a timeless genre.
A lot of people don't realize "Barbara Ann" is a cover.
The Regents originally did it in 1961.

And of course "Sloop John B." has been around since the 1800's
Votes for Kokomo, Surfing Safari, and California Girls please
Surfer girl, Help Me Rhonda, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, In My Room, Little Duce Coupe, God Only Knows are also all good songs by The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys best song is God Only Knows.
The Beach Boys were one of The Beatles, favorite groups. Paul's favorite album was "Pet Sounds".
And vice-versa
Rubber Soul begat Pet Sounds begat Sgt Pepper
Pet Sounds was pure genius.
I know you had to have heard "California Girls" before.

Their album “Pet Sounds” was voted the best rock album of all time. I think by Rolling Stone Magazine.
@Sub if you ain't gay Not according to John Lennon................. 🤣
@Sub if you ain't gay should be number one. No Sgt pepper without pet sounds
@Sub if you ain't gay eh but rubber soul was evolutionary whereas pet sounds was revolutionary in my opinion
As well it should
Man, respect for stepping this far into the weeds.
This was ground breaking back in the mid 1960's, bringing on the Psychedelic era in music.
This song is a taste what the 1960s were like. Another really strong taste of the '60s for you would be The Fifth Dimension singing "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In."
Fifth Dimension rocks it but then check out the funk version from the musical "Hair"
@@davidhasegawa5477 Agreed; the 5D version just reflects a wider audience. Both versions of 'Sunshine' are centered around a truly bodacious bass riff, though.
5th Dimension was the bomb
My second favorite band. 👏🏽 check out their song “don’t worry baby” one of their best, rarely gets mentioned
There's a very talented group called, Foxes and Fossils that cover a lot of songs. You can find them on U tube. They do an excellent rendition of, Don't worry baby. Check it out, I think you'll thoroughly enjoy it.
Same era, different band the Surfari's -Wipeout. One line one time then all instrumental. Definitely up there with Beach Boys.
Yeah these dudes pretty much invented the sound of the beach :-)
Never liked the Beach Boys or "surfer music" till this song because I was into blues and hard rock. Liked it so much had to go to their concert in 1969
olo lol John Milner in American Graffitti, "Nah, i don't like that surfer shit!"
Rock and rolled been going downhill ever since Buddy Holly died.
This is one of Brian Wilson’s pocket symphonies. The layering of sounds so brilliant. Another example would be “God only knows”
Their type of music is called "Surfer Rock" characterized by the easy vibe and great vocal harmonies. Try their song "Kokomo". You might also like another artist called Dick Dale, who was famous for his surf guitar style.
Raymond Gilbert he seemed to copy Armenian Lute music. That was a theremin at the end.
Another instrumental rock band, which influenced Dale, was The Ventures. Their tune "Walk, Don't Run" is a classic. ua-cam.com/video/owq7hgzna3E/v-deo.html
Actually this and Pet Sounds are definitely not surf rock
Kokomo was my moms shit when I was young... i’m 40 now... Also I’m a Chef and one place I worked we used to sing “Lechuga(lettuce in Spanish), Lechaga, come on pretty mama🤦🏾♀️ I can’t sing the original anymore🤣🤣🤣
Surfer Rock? I don't know, I think this is just general pop music. To have a genre, I think you need more than 5 or 6 groups
THANK YOU FOR THE VARIETY OF REACTIONS IT KEEPS ME INTERESTED.
For a different sound based around the beach (Surf Guitar): Dick Dale 'Misirlou'
Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From Your Friends
LIVE AT WOODSTOCK
The version with Mad Dogs and Englishmen is much better.
You'll need this translator for the Woodstock version -> ua-cam.com/video/ZY86YpsfOPc/v-deo.html
It’s the best version!
My favorite is sloop john B. Really was part of the sound track of the 60's and 70's.
"God Only Knows", "I Get Around" ..............Also check out "Jan & Dean" - very similar sound.
I'll second this on every mention of God Only Knows. I want to see tears in his eyes.
@@vapoet _" I want to see tears in his eyes."_
Good luck with that... Not quite sure that's possible! He barely understood that Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" was supposed to be a sad song! I don't think he listened to the lyrics much at all. Made him think of cowboy movies, ffs! lol
@@robertcartier5088 To think The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a cowboy song. Wow! It would be tough enough for young people to understand it is a true story, but not understanding that it was about a ship?
I Can Hear Music - Beach Boys
Oh man, Carl's voice 💗 on that song. Absolutely beautiful. One of my all time favorite BB songs
One of my other favorites 💟
Yes, they are beach music. They were a HUGE group for many, many years.
They were in constant competition with the Beatles inspiring each other. They created the “ surf music “ sound. My favorite by them - “ Wouldn’t It Be Nice?”
Surfer Girl, In My Room, California Girls, Help Me Rhonda,Little GTO, Don’t Worry Baby.

Beach Boys are great. Such a huge catalog you can choose from. Some suggestions:
God Only Knows, Wouldn't it Be Nice, I Get Around, Fun Fun Fun.
Would also love to see a two-fer reaction:
Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16" vs Beach Boys' "Surfin USA"
The Beach Boys got in a bit of copyright trouble on that one...
I agree with these song choices!
I would add Little Deuce Coupe.
You should listen to Frankie Vali and the four seasons, "can't take my eyes off you", great song...
"Rag Doll" is much better.
Their album Pet Sounds got the Beatles to do Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club album. Pushing each other for more, better and a different sound.
One of the most influential band of all time, ranked alongside the Beatles for their intravasations
Surfin USA-help me Rhonda-Kokomo - I know there’s more
Every time I hear Help Me Rhonda I think of the movie Short Circuit (possibly Short Circuit 2, it's been a while).
Another vote for Surfing Safari
Love Kokomo and the video
Try the more mature stuff. Look up the album "Pet Sounds." It is considered to be one of the greatest albums ever made. God Only Knows will have you in tears.
"Wouldn't it be nice" "kokomo" "California girls" "help me Rhonda" "in my room" "surfing usa" "surfer girl" wait scratch "surfer girl" I don't think it would be up your alley. Great song though. I just don't think you'd be into it and I don't want to hear anything bad being said about it as it's one of my favorite by the beach boys.
Votes for KOKOMO and California Girls" and Surfing Safari
Everyone of your picks are great 👍
I would “borrow” my older sisters Beach Boys albums and sing and dance around my room. I wanted nothing more then to grow up and be a Surfer Girl. I grew up and still live in Southern California, but I’m a horrible swimmer. 😄
"Fun, Fun, Fun" is a great Beach Boys song. I've seen them in person three times, and even though they are old guys, they are still amazing!!!
That high pitched sound you hear throughout the song is from a Theremin. It's an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the musician. Very cool.
For context, the Doctor Who theme is played on theremin.
I might be wrong but I think this one wasn't a theremin, but a type of early slide synth which makes a similar sound
“Do it Again”, “Sloop John B”
"ELECTRIC AVENUE" BY EDDY GRANT!!!!!!!
"...and then we'll take higher!" ;-]
I loved watching your reaction to the Beach Boys music I have to say. As if you just discovered something new. The Beach Boys songs are masterfully produced by Brian Wilson who was a magical genius and had a falcetto voice, a beautiful voice to go with it. His brother, Carl had a beautiful, sweet and strong voice and their brother Dennis was full of life and fun to watch because he exuded so much energy into his playing of the drums. God certainly blessed these brothers. When I listen to their music it always made me happy, gave me chills, made me cry. made me happy again. So many emotions run through their music. Beach Boys is like no other band alive then and now. Beach Boys is California, not just the beach. The sounds of California and sunshine. It's 2022, New Year and wish the constant repeat of Covid news would stop because like a bad flu it will not be eraticated, stop the mandates and let's get back to life.
This is California surfer music…and the Beach boys created their own genre, add in Brian Wilson’s genius and voila…Pet Sounds!
Beatles and Beach Boys had a friendly competition going on. They were always trying to one up each other. Up shot- we got some great music.
Cake "Short Skirt Long Jacket.
Beck "Girl"
Nathaniel Rateliff "I Need Never Get Old"
ALL have some great head boppin' body dancing vibes!
@fakeaorta - Cake gets my vote everyone (my daughter loves that track too)
Love all three songs
What I love about watching reaction videos is that we all know what's coming next, and you don't...so seeing your reaction when something unexpected happens just makes this Grandma smile. You give my generation hope that the world will be ok.
Brian Wilson is one of the brothers and founders of the group and is considered a musical genius. There album Pet Sounds is considered one of the best albums of all times. I was listening to a radio program where the Beatles were listening to Pet Sounds and it inspired them with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I recommend the movie Love and Mercy, which is about Brian Wilson.
Rolling Stone just named Pet Sounds the second greatest album of all time (after Marvin Gaye 'What's going on')

Beach Boys - Sloop John B
I suggest you actually do a full on Sloop John B video, and take it back to The Kingston Trio after that, and then all the way back to the Bahamas and the folk song!
Ah, Kingston Trio was my first ever concert. Probably was 8 or 9. Loved it!
This song was literally classic road trip music going down to Florida, it was so good
I can’t help but see Danny Tanner (Full House) singing this in my head when I hear this song🤣🤣🤣
I get uncle Jessie playing the drums
Oh Lord, I remember that bit.
Different kind of feel. Falko - rock me amadeus
The Beach Boys defined this sound and the reason you feel this is the type of music to listen to going to the beach. They were also the first to use the Electro-Theremin in popular music.
My favorite Beach Boys song is "Sloop John B"
Surf music.......when Hendrix came on the scene he said "You'll never hear Surf music again" on his first album.....
I think maybe he was talking about Dick Dale who was ill at the time.
Some of my other favorite Beach Boys songs are "Surfin' USA" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice"
surfin USA is a good one, but everyone reacts to wouldn't it be nice, some of the others need some attention.
“Catch a wave”
NOBODY comes close to sounding like them. They were before my time but my goodness man I love them!
The Beachboys music was about the beach, summer, fun, youth. You completely got them.
"God Only Knows" When John Lennon heard it, he proclaimed it the most perfect song he'd ever heard.
Try listening to "I Can Hear Music".
Brian Wilson is still a genius. A year ago tonight I heard his band on the Cayamo music cruise, and then later that week again on the ship. In between, I was fortunate to talk to him and many in his enormous band, which was sometimes 13 people. As good as it gets. His songs, production, and arrangements all reach for the heavens.
Their brand or genre is 60's California beach music. All the songs are fun.
Kickstart my heart by motley crue I think you'll enjoy it
try wipeout from the 60's
I'm 68. I think I was about 16 the first time I heard it...."In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." Tennyson got it right. I always have thought this was a particularly beautiful and haunting love song.
And, you're not the only person to think the Beach Boys personify the beach, especially in California!
The Beach Boys have great harmonies and are the core of the California beach sound. Good time music for driving with the top down and their music blaring as you cruise.
INXS- "Don't Change" The official video.
"Kokomo" by the Beach Boys is a must react to. You will know that tune.
Beach Boys are known for conjuring up images of summer fun, sand and surf, and their excellent multi-part harmonies. The best example of their harmonies that will blow you away is "Catch a Wave".
The Beach Boys started out as a Surf band that had great harmonies. Most Surf music was guitar-based instrumentals, but The Beach Boys added lyrics that reflected the Southern California youth lifestyle: Sun, Surf, Cars, Girls, Parties, Fun. The band consisted of three brothers, their cousin and a childhood friend, so they'd literally been singing together all their lives.
Brian Wilson, the group's leader, was more ambitious. He wanted to make more mature music; he wasn't a teenager anymore, so the simple fun was giving way to more adult concerns. "Good Vibrations" was his insane masterpiece. This song took close to eight months to record, at a time when most bands would record an entire album in a week or two.

Is that in the studio with the Wreaking Crew? Hal Blaine is drumming. Mike Love is wearing his "Love Gloves."
I agree with Jill, "God only Knows" is another great song!
This song threw down the gauntlet to all of the other groups releasing music in the late 60's to push their game to the next level. The particular things in this song that are "Beach Boys Trademarks" are the so-called "Wall of Sound" recording technique and the intricate harmonies.
Kokomo is another great songs of theirs.
