So the opening "gospel" vocal section that you both reference is actually a song in itself called Our Prayer. Brian wrote it and the Beach Boys originally recorded it. It was to be the opening snippet track of the abandoned SMiLE album in 1967 that Heroes and Villains was also apart of. Heroes and Villains was invisioned by Brian as a old western-styled musical comedy. Thus all of the funny sounding instruments and lyrical play. The original 1967 single release by the Beach Boys is amazing.

To fully appreciate this performance, it's important to understand what transpired over the nearly 40 years that it took to get there. The "SMiLE" album wasn't completed mainly due to Brian's mental issues and the lack of support from the rest of the band. By this time, he hired lyricists (Van Dyke Parks for this particular album) and sessions musicians (later to be known as "The Wrecking Crew"), so the rest of the Beach Boys were mainly just needed for vocals in the recording process. The tracks were laid down and the songs mostly finished when Brian's mental instability caused him to drop the project completely. A few of the tracks would wind up on the album "Smiley Smile", like this one. Over the next few decades, Brian fought his demons (and his "therapist"), but eventually overcame the majority of his issues and began performing again. It was Darian Sahanaja, one of Brian's new band members, who convinced Brian to revisit "SMiLE". Taking copies of the original recordings, Darian helped Brian recreate the album with his new band. I can't describe just how excited I was when I found out that "SMiLE' was finally being finished, as it indicated that Brian was finally finishing possibly his greatest creation, and with the help of a band that was willing to help him see it through.

Brian Wilson is not just "A" Beach Boys member; he is "THE" Beach Boys member. He wrote most of their music. Unfortunately he has suffered from depression for much of his life. Barenaked Ladies actually did a song entitled, "Brian Wilson". The main hook of the chorus says, "I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.....". You should check out that song too.

I’ve always liked this song in its original version. This was too much. It felt like Brian said to himself let’s see if I can make a catchy little tune annoyingly long. If you wanna see some good collection of songs with a bunch of people on stage then check out the Roy Orbison concert Black n White Night. Features a bunch of well known artists and they pretty much stick to the songs in their native recording.

What about Carl, Dennis, Al and Bruce though? They might not have been as significant to the Beach Boys’ music or legacy as a whole, but their contributions to the band’s catalogue (especially from the late 60s to the early 70s) definitely shouldn’t be overlooked when talking about the Beach Boys as a band. Some of my all-time favorite Beach Boys songs include California Saga (written by Al), Forever (written by Dennis), Disney Girls (by Bruce) and Long Promised Road (by Carl).

Brian both composed and produced. And his mental illness is not diagnosed as depression, but rather schizoid affective disorder. Which he is able to treat well with meds and has been highly functional since properly diagnosed and treated.

Brian suffered from an extreme case of schizophrenia. It was much worse than depression. He heard voices while he was onstage saying... "Brian, you suck." Among other things. The rest of the band was called the messengers. They brought the music to the people. All very important. I saw them 39 times. 37 times without Brian. They were great in their prime. Don't tell me that they weren't important. Carl had to carry the load of singing all of the Brian songs... replacing his voice onstage. He also was the singer on God Only Knows and Good Vibrations in the studio. Mike Love was the voice of the early hits and wrote a lot of the lyrics.

I thought this was great and very impressive to get all those different musicians blending together so well live. Brian Wilson is a real genius. I recently re-watched the movie 'Love and mercy' which was a biopic of Brian. I can highly recommend it with the caveat that like all biopics you have to accept that it is dramatised. He suffered from a nervous breakdown after the pressures of relentless touring with the Beach Boys and concentrated more on writing. There is a fantastic scene showing how he put together 'Good vibrations' which was groundbreaking at the time. He had a long struggle with his mental health. Cheers guys, enjoyed your reaction.

I was probably nearly impossible sometimes for him to separate all the different ideas in his head, but somehow when he got into the studio he knew exactly what he wanted to hear. He loved working directly with the musicians because he could ask them for certain things and they often surprised him with more than he asked for, and a lot of the studio musicians he worked with swore that he got more out of them than anyone else ever did. For all his problems it's wonderful that he finally worked it all out and learned to live with himself.

It's important to point out that THIS EXTREMELY EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE would've NEVER HAPPENED if not for Darian Sahanaja (the guy with funny hair playing keyboards that is conductiing the singers at the beginning). HE is the guy that convinced Brian Wilson to come back and finish this masterpiece. He kind of goes under the radar here... but he's responsible for saving the best album ever conceived and making it a reality... everyone should thank him.

BTW: I've seen a lot of commments here dismissing this version over the original. The "original" being referred to was The Beach Boys' version pieced together after this one. It's certainly great and worth the study, but IMO, you got the right one here. This is actually the original arrangment (modified a little) from SMiLE and the parts are all being played as intended by Brian (included with his band is the Stockholm Horns & Strings to help get it right). Brian's band is meticulous and super supportive of fulfilling what he intended in the performance. And Brian's in excellent form. This whole performance is a keeper.

Heroes and Villians is discriptive of those who moved west in the 19th century. They were heroes as explorers and settlers but villians to the native and Mexican peoples in California. "Dance Margarita Dance" is referring barroom girls dancing for the cowboys, etc. Creative people are always tooling their songs. Dylan does this too. You two should read up on the Beach Boys. You're missing alot by not knowing the history.

Saw him in 2004 in Ann Arbor MI, the Michigan Theater...the show was insanely phenomenal. tiny stage... this was aprt of the continuous nonstop Smile Album in 2004, which I saw the entire performance of at that concert aling with some Beach boys hits. real talent, real musicians and incredible vocal harmonies. in the same league as George Gershwin's writing. I know..."George Who?" Better look him up. Wilson is a walking miracle who conquered drug addiction and mental illness, the horrible memories of his father abuse, and came back to writing and the stage.., and makes Mike Love's life story and licensed Beach Boys Band sound like doo doo...Love has treated Brian poorly int he past, , legally hijacked the Beach Boys name for his own gain...if it wasn't for Brian Wilson, Love [his cousin], would have pumped gas at his gas station job for years. Wilson is a musical genius who deserves a Nobel peace prize or something.

  • @JoshHumble

Others here have mentioned the story and depth behind both the stunning Our Prayer and Heroes & Villains, but yeah - the broader picture of SMiLE is absolutely amazing. Brian Wilson is one of the most influencial and complex muscians of our time, and The Beach Boys are among the most prolific as a band. Brian's use of instruments were highly exotic and experimental, often resembling others like John Cage.
The lyrics were written with Brian's collaborator, Van Dyke Parks, very abstract, but they were a part of the bigger SMiLE project, which was an abstract view of Americana and its founding. Lots to do with the journey of settlers and indigenous people. What's also fascinating is the incorporation of the elements througout the album (earth, wind, fire, water).

You can probably hear with most of the Beach Boys songs they were more than likely inspired by doo wop style vocals and harmonies. Not only was Brian one of the main songwriters for the group, but he was a master arranger and composer. One of his big inspirations was Phil Spector, who used the wall of sound . That was a style that used all kinds of arrangements with large groups, sometimes using orchestral instruments to add layers to the songs. Almost like putting pieces of a puzzle together but using sound and instruments. The Beatles and The Beach Boys helped inspire each other musically. Beatles with Revolver inspired the Beach Boys Pet Sounds which would in turn influence the Beatles to work on and record Sgt Pepper. Whats even more amazing was just how fast the music scene was in just the span of a year or two. You can't really compare the music from the 60s and 70s to today.

  • @smffeb58
    @smffeb58 8 місяців тому +1

Brian Wilson is The Beach Boys. He was the genius with all the music in his head. And he was deaf in one ear, from a tyrannical father who was a failed musician punishing him as a kid by pulling on it. When they started in the early 60s getting radio play because “surf” music in CA was so popular, the father Murray became their tyrannical manager. They ultimately fired him. But Brian was the main song writer, accompanied by Mike Love his cousin, to some extent, his brothers Carl and Dennis, along with childhood friend Al Jardine were the masters of harmonies, all the scores were Brian. He suffered a mental breakdown from the stresses of being on tour, having to write the songs, and compete with the Beatles, and every other band in the 60s. Pet Sounds is considered one of the best albums ever. Band, musicians, from all over say the same. In order to compete with that album, the Beatles came out with Sgt. Pepper. Due to the his mental state, he stayed in CA, wrote all the songs while the rest of the band toured, with the likes of Glen Campbell replacing him for a time. Back then 95% of the music recorded was played by LA session musicians. Absolute must for you to watch is a documentary entitled “The Wrecking Crew” , you will really appreciate 60s music, it will answer many questions about The Beach Boys, and how the music industry evolved into what it is today… most of it sad IMO.
This song , the original was a fire, was the next project for the Beach Boys, but Brian’s deteriorating mental state, and his band mates wanting to stick to a certain “Beach Boys” sound, was the demise of what was started. There are great documentaries, and regular movies on the Beach Boys.
This particular project Smile was never finished because of internal band clashes, not understanding what it was about. As far as this particular video, and concert goes, this was the first time it was ever played, from when it was written. You’re looking at 50 years from Brian’s concept to this performance. If you watch more, you’ll see people in the audience who are the biggest stars in music, television, and film. This performance was a very big deal.
Here’s a quiz for you two, find out what Brian Wilson/Beach Boys song is Paul McCartneys favorite song of all time?

So glad you did this one! 😊😊😊 (not his best song, but illustrates the complexity behind his music.) "Love and Mercy" was the closing song in that All Star Tribute and was outstanding with Brian Wilson and the Boys Choir of Harlem performing it. Also...
This was a super cool version of Sloop John B (50th anniversary of Pet Sounds) where you can "see" all the various "sounds" being played by the various instruments: ua-cam.com/video/gx5PVjsRamk/v-deo.html
That whole All-Star Tribute concert was outstanding with people like Paul Simon, Heart, Elton John, Billy Joel, Wilson Phillips, the Go-Go's, Carly Simon, David Crosby, Darius Rucker, etc all performing Brian's songs.
Brian Wilson is widely considered a musical genius and changed the course of music we know today.

Three brothers... a first cousin... and a good high school friend made up the band. Each of them contributed to the sound. Mike Love... the cousin... wrote many of the early hit lyrics. He was hip. Without him... the car and surfin hits wouldn't have happened. That's how they got started. Carl Wilson sang Good Vibrations and God Only Knows in the studio. Pet Sounds is the #1 rated album of all-time by many publications. Rolling Stone has it at #2 behind Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On.' The beatles tried to copy Pet Sounds. Heavy influence. They were competitors. When they decided to not do any more car and surfin hits... Capitol Records stopped promoting them. They were trapped artistically. But the sheer quality of the later music broke through anyway. They weren't writing hits. It was album art. Many beautiful albums of musical gems. The Friends album is unbelievable. The Beach Boys aren't just rock and roll. Their music is symphonic. Historic. It was a challenge to bring those sounds to the stage. They are America's greatest band... easily. God Only Knows is the greatest pop/rock song ever recorded. Paul McCartney agrees. No samples... no digital effects... no digital drums... no synths... no pitch correction... no sex onstage... no dancing... no special effects... no vulgarity... no hatred... just love and music.

Assuming everything went right with the production and release of a hypothetical Smile and Brian got professional help right after, the first thing the boys would do is attend the Monterey Pop Festival as the opening and closing act, as they had planned to do. After this, it's very likely that Brian would relax and follow the coming trend of "back to basics" by having the follow up album be something similar to Wild Honey, but with better production quality and perhaps slightly more ambition and involvement from Brian, possibly featuring a completed version of "Can't Wait Too Long", though I'm not sure if something like Friends would still come out though. After that, it kinda starts to get fuzzy with predictions as 1968 was a time where Brian would start work on a plethora of songs, but never finish them as he started his downward spiral. Assuming an alternate version of 20/20 or an album similar to it still comes out, you could expect things like finished versions of "Ol' Man River" and "Walk On By" for example (and to make things even better, let's say Dennis never meets Manson too.). After that, your guess is as good as mine as to what they would put out in the following decades with a Brian that never lost his ambition. Three things I'd say would happen for sure would be that 1) They definitely would have employed the use of synths on future albums as even in our timeline, Brian was incredibly fascinated when he learned of the new technology. 2) It's very likely that Brian could've started a solo career earlier than our timeline, perhaps around 1975, to put out the music he would want to put out instead of what the band and the public wanted and who knows, maybe he could've done a collaboration with Paul McCartney or other artists? And 3) It's also very likely that Brian could've eventually wanted to diversify his skills later in life by producing film scores or lending his voice or production expertise to other artists. And finally, to make this the perfect timeline, let's say that Carl and Dennis continue to live to this day and all six Beach Boys are still one band. Sorry for the wall of text, the Beach Boys and speculating are two things that I love very much, lmao.

Terrilynn you have the Manson story wrong. It was Dennis who got involved with the Manson crew who lived at his house, hoped to get recognition for a few songs he wrote that weren't promoted but partly used by the Beach Boys with new lyrics which angered Charles Manson. This led to them trashing Dennis' home, stealing Gold Records and threatening Dennis' life. Horrible situation!!!

I had to laugh when you said you didnt know he was a Beach boy as others have mentioned he is the Beach Boys. He writes and produces all the songs. He went of the deep end in the 70s and became a recluse. This is his comeback. By the way the Beach Boys do not play any of the instruments on their later albums its all done by the Wrecking Crew a group of studio musicians who play on almost every big hit of the 60s and 70s The beginnings of the group can be traced to session musicians of the late 1950s including Irv Cottler, Earl Palmer, Howard Roberts, Hal Blaine[23] and a group headed by bassist and guitarist Ray Pohlman, sometimes referred to as the "First Call Gang."[24] Earl Palmer was originally from New Orleans and had recorded with many of the Crescent City's rhythm and blues musicians, such as Fats Domino.[23] He moved to Los Angeles in 1957, and in the 1960s played on hit records by artists such as Ike and Tina Turner, Glen Campbell, Jan and Dean, The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Ronettes, The Everly Brothers, and Sonny & Cher.[23] Pohlman was one of the first session musicians in Los Angeles to use an electric bass in recordings, and by the early 1960s became highly sought after in rock recordings, playing on many records by Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys.[2 If you want to find out more en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(music)#Brass,_woodwinds,_harmonica,_and_backing_vocals

I use to see the beach boys often and during that time Brian was having his mental problems and he would be playing the piano and just get up and wander off and another guy would jump on and never miss a beat. Sometimes he would wander back but not always.

just for grins, on your own listen to H&V from their “Best of the Beach Boys - Sounds of Summer” album. You know I don’t to be critical here to whoever referred you to this version, because for a first time listener this isn’t the version to listen to… sorry. This concert was fantastic and I love it. But first time listener to this specific song it doesn’t do it justice to You’ll see if you listen from their Best album. I love the Beach Boys from day one and have almost all their albums, been to I think at least 8 of their concerts but of all their great songs, which by the way Brian Wilson wrote most of them, this one is my favorite. Happy Holidays

It was from the 60's, not the 70's.
I know you mean well, but you need to get more information concerning Brian.
Once you get into the rabbit hole, you will want to stay there.

You REALLY REALLY REALLY.....REALLY should watch the whole concert...you don't have to do a video reaction to the whole thing... but ...as a human being... you're missing out on the best musical product recorded live...ever... if you don't watch it. I am not a huge Beach Boys fan... I'm a HUGE Frank Zappa fan... and as a fan of Zappa... somoeone whom I feel has done the best concerts live EVER...I say that this beats Zappa... and that's not a small statement. This is REALLY the best you can get.

I loved the original version. loved it so much i bought the entire album just for that one song. This is good but personally speaking the original would have been a much better reaction since in this one mix with other mixes.

"Heroes And Villains" is my favorite Beach Boys song but this live version is not as good as the Beach Boys' studio version. Please listen to the original.

      Each one stands alone.

Please react to the greatest female since she was 15 yrs old, Tina S. Covering "moonlight sonata" or " Through the fire and flames" the last one you won't even be able to follow her fingers. At age 16 she was already a spoke women for Frances largest guitar company. Also " for the love of God "

The word genius gets over used but in Brian Wilson’s case it is applicable. He is brilliant.
From 1975-The Doobie Brothers song I Cheat The Hangman. The song goes in many directions and was as close to a Prog rock song as they ever recorded. Phil and Sam I think you would like it.

@robertkern9911 I know all that but Phil said he wrote it in the 70's and I was just correcting that he wrote it in the 60's with Van Dyke Parks.

Most reactors don't realize that live versions aren't the ones we first heard and fell in love with. A few exceptions would be "Crossroads" by Cream, Joe Cocker @ Woodstock. Nothing wrong with checking out live stuff, but start with studio cuts. I'll be 71 in a week.

To each their own, but this is the more complex side of his artistry and a highly regarded masterpiece; makes a lot of sense to those who click with it. Some love The Beach Boys for the more pop-centric work, some love them for the deeper stuff, some love it all. That's what makes them so great - LOTS of sides to them to please a lot of audiences.
