    Carol Kaye, who played bass, like most of the session musicians that played on this (and thousands of other songs), never really got a sense of the complete recording until she heard it on the radio. She said she was stunned at how Brian Wilson put it all together.

      Barbara Ann was Dean Torrence singing and Brian didn't even write it, and Surfin Safari is really simplistic. You want to show Brian's early genius? "Salt Lake City," "When I Grow Up to Be a Man," and "I Get Around," as you mentioned, not to mention "California Girls," "The Little Girl I Once Knew," and so many others.

    The Beach Boys were HUGE! Brian Wilson was sooo creative! This song took hours and hours of work. Their harmonies are amazing. Sometimes even 5 part harmonies. The fact that they’ve been popular for decades proves their talent and creativity. There is a video on UA-cam of Paul McCartney talking about The Beach Boys song “God only knows” and saying that it’s his favorite Beach Boys song and it always brings a tear to his eyes when he hears it. Someone else said that The Beach Boys album “Pet sounds” inspired the Beatles to write the Sargent Pepper album. Great talent knows talent when they hear it! Thanks guys! 😀

    • @Zosohobo
      @Zosohobo 2 роки тому +3

      @@frankiebowie6174 That's a really good comparison. Those songs, for both bands, were creative masterpieces of this period. And despite what people may think about "old" 60s music, both songs were radical in their structure/arrangement for their time and even today compared to most popular music.

    • @oregonchick76
      @oregonchick76 2 роки тому +1

      You're so right: the album Pet Sounds is Brian Wilson's greatest achievement. After hearing Pet Sounds, the Beatles were so creatively inspired that they started working on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band immediately.
      The layering of tracks on Pet Sounds (what producers came to call The Wall of Sound, something initially pioneered by Phil Spector) was revolutionary. You can really hear it best on "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and even more on "God Only Knows." They double up instruments and vocals, so they're singing the same part on multiple tracks that get compressed together, making the sound richer and more complex. They might also have an electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and string section all play the same part on different tracks, so by the time it's actually done, you can't really distinguish the different instruments -- it's just amazing and intense music.

    Hippies would say "I'm picking up good vibes" (or vibrations) if everything was groovy and far out...or "bad vibes", if things weren't cool.
    The Must-Hear Beach Boys songs, imho, are "God Only Knows", "Surfer Girl", Heroes & Villlains", "Sloop John B", "Don't Worry Baby", "California Girls", "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Surfin' USA", and maybe "Little Deuce Coupe", which is about a car. Surfing and cars were big in the 1950s and early 1960s. Magic carpets were the preferred mode of transport thereafter.

    The Beach Boys came from the next town from where I grew up. It is the South Bay in Southern Calif. They were a few years older than I, but what they sang about was exactly what my teenage years were about. The beach, cursing the boulevard, parties, boys for me. dreaming about the future. It was a great time and place. And it still is.

    There is two basses on the track. A Fender P-Bass Electric Bass and an upright acoustic double bass. The chugging sound in the chorus is a bunch of Cellos too. Brian Wilson the main songwriter and producer of the band used two basses a lot from 1965-1967.

    At the time this song, Good Vibrations came out in the late 60's, it was the most expensive single to have ever been produced at that time. The production cost was around $50,000 dollars, which was more money than most recording artists spent to produce an entire album during that era! Lucky for the Beach Boys that it was a huge #1 hit in the USA and actually made a profit!

Other great songs which I love from The Beach Boys are I Get Around, God Only Knows, Wild Honey, Sloop John B, Fun Fun Fun, Darlin', Surfin' USA, - all these songs evoke wonderful memories of the 1960s. The very first live music concert I ever went to was the Beach Boys in Glasgow. I was in my early teens. Blown away. At that time concerts were in theatres and the groups expected the audience to sit down and listen. Not in Glasgow! The Beach Boys were surprised and even shocked that everyone was on their feet, dancing in the aisles and joining in. After the fist couple of songs, they started getting the hang of it and really started enjoying themselves. It was fantastic.

    1st time I heard this song was late Sept 1966 over an AM car radio with a weak signal because it was not a local station. As I was pulling up to my house and the recording was so different and because I was struggling to hear it I pulled away and kept driving to try to improve the signal. I was a big Beach Boy fan and I'm thinking 'Is this them"? Can't be it's so different yet it has to be them, those vocals! What a feeling, so exiting. To see your responses reminds of that day back in 66' and puts a big smile on my face. The song is as fresh and groundbreaking today as it was then!.....Got cello's going along multiple bass guitar parts!

    The synthesiser type sound is made by an Electro-theremin, Brian wanted to used a real Theremin as used a lot in 1950's Sci-Fi movies but struggled to find either an instrument or anyone who could play it, but someone introduced him to the Electro-theremin which is a an electronic signal generator with a slider to modulate the sound of the signal, hence the similar earie sound of the Theremin without having to master a difficult instrument.

    Additional musicians and production staff
    Hal Blaine - drums,[151] timpani,[126] other percussion[126]

    Hal Blaine's drumming on this is so original. Who else would think of that snare beat in the quieter sections? The Wrecking Crew and Brian Wilson were all geniuses.
    When this was released in 1966, that same year, on the same radio station, people could hear this song, alongside several other new songs that same year, like Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles, or Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett, or Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones, or Eight Miles High by The Byrds, or Hey Joe by Hendrix. And a year later there's stuff like Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum, or Soul Man by Sam and Dave, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane or Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. None of these songs sounded like the others, and yet they could all play back-to-back back then. I once heard some musicologist-mathematician say in an interview that, using 200+ variables identified by composers and players as being 'meaningful,' the music created during the 60's, through to the 80's, was the most diverse and/or complex in popular music history.

    I believe that there is another Beach Boys song that some people feel is every bit as good as -- or perhaps even better than -- Good Vibrations. And that song is called God Only Knows. The list of musicians, songwriters, and critics who name it as the best song ever written or at least very high on the list is impressive. It was made at about the same time as Good Vibrations, and is included on the album Pet Sounds which has achieved a similarly impressive list of accolades as one of the best albums ever produced.

    KJ below is right, this song was a HUGE hit on the radio. Back when radio was fun. I'd suggest checking out the songs Feel Flows and Surf's Up, two incredibly beautiful and moving songs.

    Album was called Pet Sounds recorded in 1966, The Beatles said this album was the impetus to them recording Sargent Peppers lonely hearts club band album.

    Back in the day when radio was king, I remember going to the beach and hearing transistor radios tuned in to the same station playing this song. There were so many of them it was almost like hearing it in stereo.

    I love the Beach Boys, especially Brian Wilson. ❤️ PLEASE react to the movie "Love and Mercy" starring John Cusack. It's the true story of Brian and the Beach Boys. It's excellent! It'll show you secrets on how they made that really cool sound you both mentioned (sounds like a helicopter), and other unique sounds, within the movie. Too cool.

    If you guys like harmonies, then you really, REALLY need to listen to America. Best songs: "Ventura Highway", "Tin Man", "A Horse With No Name", "Sister Golden Hair" and Lonely People.
    There are others but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.

    Great reaction. They've made so many great songs, but a particular favourite, which I'm not sure is mentioned too often, is a song called "Darlin'". Great harmonies, as usual. Take care guys.

    It’s really cool watching you guys evolve into really good music critics... to see you progress and develop a level of music awareness and appreciation. You have developed a deeper appreciation of music and it’s been fun to see the progression. It would be cool to watch your very first music reaction for comparison. You’ve come a long way!
    Patrick, you’re right, seeing isn’t everything, but, for me, watching a live performance of a great song engages not only my ears, but my eyes, too. It enhances the overall experience 10 fold for me. Like listening to Dire Straits song, Sultans of Swing, and then watching the live performance . From really good, to spectacular. For me, I’ll take a live performance any day. The emotion from the singers and the band can’t be caught on audio alone.

    "They are different" sums up Brian Wilson and his "Boys" perfectly. Brian is probably the only true American musical GENIUS we have had in the past 60 years. Nobody thinks music the way he does. See the movie "Love and Mercy" - a brilliant biopic about Brian. There are so many fabulous songs by the Beach Boys and Brian solo that are just from another planet -- in terms of chord changes, instrumentation, song structure, harmonies, on and on. Try "Add Some Music to Your day" from 1970. "From There to Back Again" from 2012 (I think), "The Little Girl I Once Knew" from 1965, and solo Brian "South American" and "Sail Away." Endless magical sounds from the singular creative mind that nobody else can be compared to. Brian was John, Paul, and George Martin all rolled into one. And you must listen to the whole "Brian Wilson Presents Smile" album from 2004. Had he pieced this together in 1967, it would have been the greatest album of all-time. As it is, and even with his older voice, it might still be the greatest album of all-time. Sergeant Pepper is child's play compared to SMILE.

    Thanks guys for reacting to The Beach Boys again. I have four favorite bands/musicians whose music has improved my life immeasurably. Brian Wilson is my number one. I'm happy when music lovers much younger than myself appreciate what was accomplished back in the day by Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, Mike, Bruce, & The Wrecking Crew (& David in the early days). IMO, this song is one that exemplifies Brian's desire to become more than the surfing & car tunes they were previously known for. Those signature Brian Wilson harmonies woven throughout the tapestry of instruments set their sound apart then & now.
    This is just my opinion, but before you react to live, I would suggest watching one of the documentaries on The Beach Boys or Brian Wilson so you know their story, because it's a long one. Usually the documentaries just use short clips of songs, so I don't think hearing song snippets would ruin any future reactions for you, but that's up to you of course. Most of the movies with actors playing The Beach Boys irritate me, but if you decide to watch a movie, Love & Mercy was at least made with Brian's consent.
    As for live performances, IMO sometimes the concert clips don't always do the songs or the Beach Boys justice. There are many reasons for this (some of which you will understand after hearing their history), but none of them have to do with a lack of talent on anyone's part. I have many Beach Boys concerts on DVD & I enjoy them for what they are, but the quality of the DVDs are often lacking in terms of sound. I love them live & in the studio, but in my mind they are two different things.
    All that to say thank you, lol! Keep goin'!
