  • March 6, 2019 | Robin Hilton -- Meg Myers put out one of 2018's most intense and cathartic albums. Take Me to the Disco raged and threw sonic punches at anyone who'd ever attempted to use or abuse her, from former record executives to past lovers. Dressed in a sparkling blue leotard, Myers re-creates that fire and ferocity behind the Tiny Desk, replacing her album's roaring electric guitars and electronics with a pulsing string quartet, piano and brushed drums.
But the most intense part of the performance is Myers herself. The distant, piercing looks she gives during the set's opening cut, "Jealous Sea," are unforgettable and unforgiving as she sings about a rat's nest of feelings - anger, fear, jealousy, desire - over an ex. "Everything's right, everything's wrong / When you call my name," she sings while half-hugging herself. "And I don't think I can stop the jealousy / When it comes, it comes like waves and I can't breathe."
Myers follows with a searing version of what she calls "a very lovely, uplifting song" from Take Me to the Disco called "Tear Me to Pieces," a frenzied takedown of liars, buried secrets and "wicked temptations." She then dials back the fury and indignation to close with a surprising version of "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush. Myers is a longtime fan, and often gets compared to the British singer. But Myers tells the audience she fell in love with the song for its meaning. "It's about men and women and the differences between them, and learning to have empathy for each other."
At the end of it all, standing behind the desk, Myers seems to finally exhale and let go of the fury as she paws playfully at her band, grateful to have gotten through it together.
    Set List
    "Jealous Sea"
    "Tear Me to Pieces"
    "Running Up That Hill"

One of the most honest and real female artist I've ever heard. It really hurts inside listening to Meg, but I appreciate her honesty and pouring out her emotions in her yelps, screams and voice changes. I saw her in a small club and she was so emotional and was fighting so many demons, but it was a very beautiful and gut wrenching evening. I applaud Meg for her uniqueness.

If you understand astrological symbolism and that Meg has Libra Sun with Scorpio Moon conjunct Scorpio Venus, and then earlier Scorpio Pluto conjunct Scorpio Mercury...well, I'd say you encapsulated that combo pretty well. An interesting mix of vulnerability, raw emotion, sensitivity, and some edgy anger/resentment.

I hear a amazing singer who knows her vocal tonalities and how to switch it up… I see her thinking and concentrating on how navigate her vocals. I don’t see any emotions behind her eyes while singing, it’s like a robot talking and singing, but a robot that knows how to sound emotion, but lacks it true pure emotion. Emotion is in the eyes and she is devoid of it. It’s odd. It’s compelling because of it.

However, great music isn't necessarily instant gratification and nor should it be. If you listen to her music you will hopefully "get it" and get where she is singing from. I just discovered this treasure going on 3 weeks ago now and became an instant huge fan! Her cover of running up that hill popped up in my YT feed, and I love that song so I gave it a listen, and Meg floored me! The best cover of that song I ever heard! And that voice!! So naturally I checked out her channel and I loved everything she had done and I went to iTunes and bought it all! And found that her voice is super addictive! I have been playing her music on a loop for hours everyday while I’m driving (I’m a truck driver) even if I only plan on listening to one song, I just get pulled back in and next thing I know all the songs have played through and the loop is restarting! I’m 51, and have enjoyed 100’s of artists, 1000’s of songs and of course have had lots of absolute favourite singers, and dear little Meg has destroyed them all! As I read in another comment here, she has a multi facetted voice like she has more than one working in harmony! I just got to this video so its the first I have heard doing a live stripped down show, and just fell deeper in love with voice! She literally gave me goosebumps!
