@@mikelspotwood for real. For example when someone is into another person they are afraid that the other person will find out. And the other person might like this someone too but they are also afraid. So both dumbasses let each other get away by not doing anything just to regret in the future and wonder what if they actually had asked each other out. It's tragic af. People really should stop acting like this.
Neither of them managed to do that.
Why are people amazed that she likes her own music? Like, how are you going to make music if you don't like what you're doing? If you don't like it, you just change it until you do like it, that's art.
Because they're insecure. They see her enjoying something she'd put her all into, and they're uncomfortable that she gets to be happy while they hate themselves and so they try and tear her down
Very true, I try to make my own music and tend to like it myself. However, at the same time, you are never happy with it and assume others will hate it (even when they say different)
Every single time I've ever recorded with a band, I listen to that shit non stop on repeat for months on end! It's the culmination of all your hard work combined into one moment. When you're performing, you're caught in a flow state of performance and NEVER get to view your music from an observer stand point. The sheer joy of hearing your music played without having to perform it shines a unique light as to what you've made and how it comes across to other people.
Cos life has kicked in most people to living something they can only just tolerate.

@@MarcAbela Great music will have waves of tension and release. It’s what keeps people listening. In this song, however, there are only three chords in the chorus. Everyone is vulnerable to something or someone, lets be real here. My take is that she poured her heart and soul into this song and you can hear it. It seems like that is what Devan Swanepoel is saying. I hear it and feel it.
Maybe vulnerability is not the weakness that you imply, but rather power.
@buggeroff I think you've misunderstood, vulnerability is not limited to someone's safety, in the way that a young woman is 'vulnerable' in going home alone in the dark. The original poster is meaning vulnerability in the sense of the emotional exposure she is risking by having her music listened to and judged and the bravery that can require.
That would be incredibly hard to sit there and listen to the song with someone like that. As the creator you are never completely satisfied with work and you notice all of the little flaws.
@Mr. Chapa Now what makes that the case?
I started writing/recording some rock music a few years ago, and I always feel really awkward when it’s played back in front of people when I’m standing right there. I even have some songs playing on the radio during “local band” hours, and I always want to quick change the channel if there’s people in the car; vulnerabilities are strange.

It's a great track and the lyrics are intense for someone so young. But I think what really made Pharrell take not was the intuitive way she built up the vocal layers from the beat. They're choral and percussive at the same time, without sounding derivative. An intuitive understanding of something complex is a sign of genius and Pharrell knows that.
She's also really into it because she's remembering the effect she was trying to create. If you've evwr been involved in music production you will have had that feeling. It's not preening or showing off. It's being caught up in the flow of remembering making the thing that appealed to you, and the reason it appealed is the emotional response it generated.

How they subtly regard each other is so beautiful in and of itself. This is truly the magic of life's foundation. Thank you both for making music.
well spoken
Shazame
Agreed fully.
Over the years, i've rewatched this moment hundreds of times now. @1:31 is everything.
I like to think that this song *REALLY* played with his synesthesia.
he mentions in the full vid that the colors were wild or something along those lines. They both are synesthetic as well
It plays well with mine!
I have chromesthesia too! This song is gorgeous
I think about light blue and pink with this song
Yes!!!
This was recorded as part of a masterclass at NYU. She was nervous for a reason. This industry is really difficult to get into. They don't know who will be listening to the music, or if they will even be chosen. This was a huge opportunity and moment for her. She had one song and it was chosen for the class. ua-cam.com/video/3Rjch28x448/v-deo.html
He’s blown away to the point he looks like he’s trying not to cry. And that is a huge compliment. Music the moves your soul is everything. She has a lot of attributes that add dimension to her raw sound. I instantly loved her. I am in awe that as young as she is she sounds like an old soul. She writes and composes from her heart and that’s what all the greats brought to their music. I love this. I’m proud of her and would love to tell her so. Well done, well done indeed ❤️! Never stop…
I love the rhythm/beat, the lyrics, and her voice! So dreamy.
I've never seen anyone so subtly yet so clearly display pure, utter, complete "DO YOU SEE THIS S**T RIGHT NOW??" the way Pharrell does while listening to her song.
ICONIC. Look where she is now, her journey is ridiculously unpredictable.
Libby Scott where is she now ? I remember seeing this when it first came out.
@@wilsybhoy well she just finished a tour over here in Australia playing to sold out venues and I think she just did 2 nights at Radio City Music Hall in NYC!! huge.
Libby Scott 👍🏻👍🏻
wilsybhoy nom for grammy
Yeah but she's only critically acclaimed.
I'm obsessed
AMANDA!!!!
I NEED OXYGEN I CANT BELIEVE UR OBSESSED TOO
dad. slay.
YASSS
MilesChronicles God why isn't she known globally? (I don't watch tv or pay attention to celebs, so she might of made it by now. U of Wisconsin milwaukee radio turned me on to her).
Not only did Pharrell love it. But the passion in her face is proof that she loves the song herself. In order to be a successful song writer you absolutely have to enjoy the music you intend to create. Alaska is literally one of the best songs ever recorded
I love the absolute moment when game recognizes game. At the 19 second mark, Pharell's entire demeanor changes. Look at his face, his eyebrows raise. What a moment that must have been for her.
Yeah. He knew right off the bat.
Damn it hurts having to watch someone do that. Even when I make my friends listen to a song that I like, the painful silence is sometimes too much.
I think that silence is called listening
H obviously, but when you dint know what the person person is thinking, it can be awkward.
@@lambchop3916 completely get you the fact she's able to head bop is amazing in itself
that’s why I love it so much when she starts getting into it, its like she lets go of the insecurity and she knows she loves it no matter what the other person thinks. she’s such a role model
When the beat drops ...Pharrell fell off the earth.
What beat? This song litterally sounds like a white noise machine
@@Jon-hb7om you dont listen to much music do you
@@percocetthirty this song is trash
@@Jon-hb7om I generally don't listen to this type of music, but it's well composed and she has a great voice. Would love to hear what you listen to, unless you're just trolling for boredom's sake.
@@Jon-hb7om Dude if you couldn't detect when the bass dropped in that you might want to check if you lost your hearing.
Her vulnerability and nervousness in the beginning was cute, but once Farrell spoke his truth and admiration for her music her surprise was glowing and vibrant 👏👏👏👏
I really live Maggie Rogers and the fact that after seeing things years later I saw her perform with an Eritrean singer in stage and she helped bring awareness to what’s happening in Eritrea..... thanks sister
Wow, I like her even more now! This is my first time hearing of her
Who’s also watched this a million times?!
Can’t get over the reaction. Honestly love this girls music and authenticity.
Maggie is as authentic of a artist as it gets you can see every emotion in her and can tell that she lives for making music as art
So much is being communicated without a single word being said. So glad this was recorded.
Five years later and I still come back to watch this video every few months. It’s so inspiring on so manny levels.
I like the double take and chuckle once she notices him tearing up.
1:32
Love love love his expressions!@@@@
... he didn't tear up?
@@LauraStar127 I don't see it. Someone help me see what they're seeing
his nods and head shakes to the cameras and to the professor in shock and disbelief are the best part of this
Discovered Maggie and her craft through this video back in 2018. It is very special to me as a songwriter, singer/rap artist myself. Her getting a little lost in her own music, the little side glances, then blocking out the whole world and only focusing on what the golden legend sitting next to her has to say about her creation, pupils dilated and all. Everything is so relatable as a creator. It's a safe bet to state that music, both others' and my own, has saved my life and I trace my virtual way back here every now and then to remind myself of that.
Music mattters - 381 🙂
It's hard to put your heart out there, and hope no one rejects it.
When Pharrell Williams compares you in various ways to Wu-Tang Clan and Stevie Wonder, you know you're a talented musician
Can't believe I've never heard this song until now. It's lit!
the finished song and vid are even better check it out
@@FAYMprod what’s her song name? I can’t find it on the comments
Where/what is this clip from? Haven’t seen this before or heard of this chick.
@@BABERZZZ619 it's from this video ua-cam.com/video/G0u7lXy7pDg/v-deo.html
A must-watch every time it's on my homepage. No greater feeling than being seen and acknowledged for your work by someone you look up to. Love everything about this.
The end when she mixes the intro back onto it gives me shivers. It sounds so primal and like the tune in my head when I’m having a great day
His face throughout the whole thing, he’s just amazed at the talent sitting next to him.
Pharrell looked at his crew like "are you hearing what I'm hearing? dude..."
I am so obsessed with this video and how it affects everyone else!!. Everyone can feel the emotions, love, respect. Human beings being in awe of each other. Acknowledging something someone has created and irs transcendental power. Just AWESOME.
