Chaka Khan: Tiny Desk Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 вер 2024
- This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk is giving the ladies their flowers. We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women artists, from veterans who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music, to those who are carving out their own paths.
Mitra I. Arthur | June 11, 2024
When the “Queen of Funk,” Chaka Khan, began to sing her hit “Sweet Thing” at the Tiny Desk, she seemed surprised at how the audience enthusiastically joined in. It’s just one example of how ingrained her work is in the fabric of music history. Since she emerged in the 1970s with the funk band Rufus, Khan has crafted a legacy that includes 22 albums, 10 Grammys, forays into jazz and theater and collaborations with Prince, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and Quincy Jones. Her 50 years in the music industry recently culminated in a long overdue 2023 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The moment guitarist Rob Bacon opened the set on the talk box, with bassist Melvin Davis and drummer Jay Williams laying down the beat, it was clear we were about to get a lesson in some naaaasty funk with “Tell Me Something Good.” If the way our in-office audience was jamming to “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me,” and “Ain’t Nobody” is any indication, be prepared to watch this show in a location where you can comfortably groove. “Sweet Thing” showcased vocalist Tiffany Smith killing the most iconic (and most vocally difficult) moment in the song, something that has humbled many a singer.
And what better way to close out this Tiny Desk during a month celebrating the contributions of Black women in music than with the anthem that has empowered woman-identified audiences for decades: the Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson penned “I’m Every Woman.”Throughout the set, I’m reminded that Khan’s unfathomably big and powerful voice is a glue that holds intergenerational music together.

50 year career and still sound this good at 71?!!!!!
Was she not supposed to be able to sing at 71? Weird comment. That or you've never seen a black choir before. If anything, the voices get even better with age.

@@ipsiloniaThe 1974 live concert recording with Rufus is incredible. Still getting my ears around Chaka still being able to sing and belt out like this now. It’s untrue. Rufus would be proud of this band of musicians. They were really special.
When you see her effortlessly singing like that, you've just seen a living legend with huge amount of talent
EXACTLY
I'm so glad she is here on this earth. What she said about the beautiful individuals happy to sing TO. Oh❤ her heart bursts and the group around her too; neat such good feelings it feels good to watch the whole collaboration going
I met her once in the Las Vegas airport. I was stunned, she's super short. I was like, OMG you’re Chaka Khan! She said, Hey, Baby, I'm in a rush walk with me! So, I did, we talked and when she got to her gate she gave me a hug and told me to take care! I couldn't believe how nice she was. She's also absolutely gorgeous!
I was stuck in a hotel elevator with her once. The two of us were pushing buttons, laugning and talking our way through it. The whole thing lasted about 20 minutes and Chaka was super cool and nice.
They are human..Good days and bad days just like anyone else...Glad you caught her on a good day..❤
@@tahseti1113 so awesome!
I wonder if she and her band got paid for this?
how does it feel to be God's favorite?
The way Chaka and Patti have been able to sustain their voices for so long NEEDS to be studied. I'm being so serious
And look good. They have taken care of their instruments and temple
Don't forget Gladys Knight. She still sounds amazing
Don't forget the Duchess of Dance. Miss Thelma Houston she's eighty one and she sounds amazing and looks amazing❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
@@kawandajohnson6297 Chaka hasn't always taken care of her temple. (look up her history) However, this is a testament to our ancestors and a direct gift from God that even they can't take away.
Yes indeed cause I was a young teen trying to sing like Chaka😄 and I'm 60 now👏👏👏🥰
The audio engineer for this needs a Nobel Peace Prize.
Right? She was barely near that MIC. But it also means her voice is that powerful. It’s insane. 😭
we've said this a million times. Tiny Desk has the best audio engineers.
HANNAH GULVA WE PRAISE HER FOR THIS SET!!!!!

well there's nothing wrong with autotune . i hate how y'all make those who use autotune look like they can't sing
@@loudesange499 I mean, some type of vocal tuning is on 99% of all professional music today, it can be refreshing to just hear a person sing like you're in the room with them without any tuning plugins.
Wow! Chaka in the raw - no reverb - no effects - and she is still FIRE 🔥 at 70!!!!
They don't want us to get any work done this month. At all. Chaka's gonna sing Through the Fire and flip the tiny desk with her throat.

Chaka up here singing like it’s 1973! She sounds so fresh! Aaaamazing.
Yesss!!! Looking and sounding great!!
That's exactly what I was thinking!
All we are missing is the hip hugger stove pipe jeans and halter top!
She was sober for this performance.
Most artists her age are pitching their songs down a key or two to sing them, but not Chaka!
She’s not called the QUEEN OF FUNK for no reason
She's definitely the TRUTH. The page has 9.7Mil subscribers. It's only been 6 days, and a tenth of that has liked this Tiny Desk.

I'm blown away. I saw a video of Jane Fonda tonight, she is 86 and still beautiful, in shape, and sharp as a tack!!! I'm falling apart at 61!
She doesn't have to try that hard. Chaka was asked in an interview. What's missing with today's music. Chaka said one word. TALENT!

I don't agree, there's a lot of talent today especially from unexpected regions, maybe its the discipline and training that is missing.

@unpredictable
Yes. Rufus, made some Fantastic, all time great music stretching Chaka and her voice; range; intonations, etc., in so many places.
Respect to drummers who keep it simple and funky, keeping a tight pocket, leaving all the space for the vocals and serving the song is harder than playing super loud and fills every 8 bars.
Queen Chaka Khan is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Aging like the finest wine 🍷🤌🏾👑
YES SHE IS!
glad you said the finest wine. she aged so well. she always was beautiful. but father time been good to her

I was the first Airmen to greet Chaka Khan when she arrived at Kadena Air Base Okinawa Japan 1987 or 1988. She stepped off of a C-141 on Baker Ramp and yours truly was there to help her down the steps. She was all of that. Tore up the NCO club. Those were the days.

Literally sitting here trying to wrap my head around how timeless she is! When I looked to see how old this video was, I questioned my senses! How can she still look and sound like that?!?
Nobody can howl, growl, and scream like Chaka. Always on key and never over done. And her magic was never in the runs, it was always her pitch, tone, interpretation, and delivery. That takes REAL talent.
Martha and Izora can get to growlin and screamin too....they all came up in that era.

Yes! Deangelo would be perfect! With a remake of Sweet Thing from a man’s perspective!! Like the way he redid the SOS Band’s Tell Me If You Still Care!..
Bout time too, comes around once a decade, hope he returns soon

You can tell she ain't trippin and allows their freedom of musical creativity
One of the All Time Greats for sure!

No she isn’t she is one of them. We still have Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, and more but I see what you’re saying.

Chaka Khan is a true legend and always a huge blessing, born and raised in my hometown, Chicago. Now tiny desk promoter, you're on a huge roll. Go get legendary, Ronald Isley and his brother Ernie!!!!!!
